DISTINGUISHED LECTURE SERIES
MAC
OUR NATION’S SECURITY: How Intelligence History Affects the Future
How Intelligence History Affects the Future SUNDAY, OCT. 9: 4PM
Cape May Convention Hall, 714 Beach Ave., Cape May The history of the Cold War is the history of U.S. intelligence in the modern age. The U.S. Government’s insatiable need for information drove development of American space and advanced technology programs. The dismantling of that intelligence system in the 1990s had equally dramatic, as well as unforeseen, implications for global stability. America’s ambivalence about a strong central intelligence system continues as a challenge for both national and global security.
Presented by the Honorable Joan Dempsey Joan’s more than 45 years of intelligence and policy experience give her the ultimate insider’s perspective on the history of modern U.S. Intelligence. Tickets: $30 lecture only, $50 lecture & reception at The Queen Victoria B&B with wine and tapas

It’s just a story….
11:45am
11:45am
It was the Victorian period that gave us such great works of terror as Dracula, and the Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. Even the Americans got in on the act with Edgar Allen Poe producing some of the greatest Gothic literature of the time. The Victorians knew how to frighten people and they knew how to do it in grand style. These works still form the basis of much modern horror and their power to thrill has not dwindled in the least. 16

Say cheese
In the Victorian era, photography was young and extremely costly. When a loved one died, their relatives would sometimes have a photograph taken of the corpse in a pose – oftentimes with other members of the family. For the vast majority of Victorians, this was the only time they would be photographed. In these post-mortem photographs, the effect of life was sometimes enhanced by either propping the subject’s eyes open or painting pupils onto the photographic print, and many early images have a rosy tint added to the cheeks of the corpse. Adults were more commonly posed in chairs or even braced on specially-designed frames. 32

Withstanding the wind
The Cape May Lighthouse actually has two separate walls. The outside wall is cone-shaped, and is 3 feet 10 inches thick at the bottom, and 1 foot 6 inches thick at the top. The inside wall is a cylinder with 8.5-inch thick walls which support the spiral staircase. The walls were designed to withstand winds several times above hurricane force. 34

Until late in the century in 1887 a married woman could own no property. Then in 1887 the Married Woman’s Property Act gave women rights to own her own property. Previously her property, frequently inherited from her family, belonged to her husband on marriage. She became the chattel of the man. During this era if a wife separated from her husband she had no rights of access to see her children. A divorced woman had no chance of acceptance in society again. 46

Still turned on
The Cape May Lighthouse is still a working beacon. The Coast Guard continues to operate the light as an active aid to navigation. The light is visible 24 miles out at sea and flashes every 15 seconds. A lighthouse’s flash pattern is called its “characteristic;” every lighthouse has its own light characteristic and exterior paint scheme (called a daymark) so that ship captains can tell them apart.

Some facts for Sherlock fans! • The only fictional character portrayed in more films than Sherlock Holmes is Dracula.
• Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, creator of Sherlock Holmes, was also a ship’s surgeon, a boxer, Deputy Lieutenant of Surrey and a first-class cricketer. He was also responsible for popularizing skiing in Switzerland. • Conan Doyle chose the name Sherlock in honor of Nottingham cricketers Sherwin and Shacklock. Originally it was Sherringford Holmes. • Holmes often said “elementary” and “My dear Watson” but never “Elementary, my dear Watson.” • The Sherlock Holmes Museum, officially at 221b Baker Street, London, is actually at number 239. • Sherlock Holmes didn’t always wear a deerstalker. The famous image of Holmes wearing a deerstalker hat is a product of Sidney Paget, who drew the illustrations, and drew Holmes wearing a deerstalker when the detective went into the country to investigate mysteries at country houses and in small rural villages, but most people think of the detective as always donning the hat when off to investigate a case.

CRAIG McMANUS
on the ghosts of Cape May
“Our existence and a ghost’s existence can be much more entwined than we think—and we may never even realize it. The living and the dead move within the same space, but seldom collide. When I work as a Medium, I have to move my consciousness into the ghost realm, the plane where ghosts exist, in order to read their thoughts.”

The origins of trick or treat
In this country, trick-or-treating has been a Halloween tradition since the late 1920s. In Britain and Ireland, the tradition of going house-to-house collecting food at Halloween goes back at least as far as the 16th century, as had the tradition of people wearing costumes at Halloween. In 19th century Britain and Ireland, there are many accounts of people going house-to-house in costume at Halloween, reciting verses in exchange for food, and sometimes warning of misfortune if they were not welcomed. While going house-to house in costume has remained popular among Scots and Irish, the custom of saying “trick or treat” has only recently become common.

What’s for dinner? Victorians valued good cooking and food. However, there were great differences between what the rich and poorer people ate. The unemployed, and others with little money, survived on little more than potato parings, rotten vegetable refuse and scraps. Those on a slightly higher wage could occasionally purchase some bacon, cheese or sausage and workers in betterpaid jobs had more choice and more wholesome food. Meal time provided the opportunity for the rich to display their wealth. This was done through rich foods, use of fine cutlery, china and servants. At the start of the period, French cuisine was in fashion, with as many as 20 dishes served at the same time in two great courses.

Theater in Victorian times
By the middle of the 19th century, Victorian London had become the heart of the theater world, which now also ceased to be an only upper-middle class luxury and interest. During the 18th century, the urban poor, who rarely attended shows at all, were forced to view from the upper galleries of the patent theaters and watch a drama largely aimed at the tastes and concerns of their betters. Starting in the 19th century, however, for the first time in British theater history, playhouses and scripts targeted the working, lower-middle class, mainly focusing on the themes of daily urban life in London, and what was called the “entertainment industry of an urban industrial society.” During a period of rapidly increasing urban population and modes of transportation, as well as the rise of successful competitors to the previously limited ‘legitimate’ stages, theater was now becoming a central ex-
pression of popular culture. Attending these new theaters by the masses, the physical and moral simplicities were often illiterate and did not appreciate the refined tragedy/comedy of the past century. Instead, they wanted the color, action, excitement, illusion, poetic justice, and moral satisfaction that constituted an escape from the dreary monotony and daily discomfort of lives spent mostly in the business of survival. Managers and writers of the dramas effectively produced modified modes of theater, which entertained millions of spectators for the rest of the 19th century, and attracted the attention of intellectuals such as Charles Dickens. With new developments in lighting, acting, costumes, and set design, and the rowdy lower-middle class audience in expansive playhouses, many argue that it is little wonder that this century produced so much delightful theater.
