Seeking life on Mars

Buttoned up as they were, Victorians believed that there was life on Mars. Giovanni Schiaparelli, an Italian astronomer, claimed that he had seen artificial waterways on Mars through his telescope. Apparently, these canals were evidence that extraterrestrial beings on the red planet were attempting either travel or commerce. These ideas were generally quite popular and taken seriously by the public, and surprisingly, people would leave money in their wills dedicated to attempts to make contract with extraterrestrial life.

HARRIET TUBMAN’S LIFE & WORK IN CAPE MAY Harriet Tubman lived in Cape May in the early 1850s, working to help fund her missions to guide enslaved people to freedom. After her initial journeys conducting freedom seekers to Canada, she returned to the states and earned money working in hotels and for private families as a cook. From Cape May, in the fall of 1852, she went back once more to Maryland, and brought away nine more fugitives. The New Jersey Historical Commission says she spent two other summers in Cape May. Cape May played a pivotal role in the fight to end slavery. Several historic figures critical to the fight against slavery spent their summers in Cape May. The Harriet Tubman Museum building is located on a block that anti-slavery activists called home in Cape May. Lafayette Street and Franklin Street became a center of abolitionist activity centered around three important buildings developed in 1846. 38

Cape May MAC’s

LESSONS OF HISTORY 10th Annual Distinguished Lecture Series Sunday, Oct. 9, 2022: 5PM

Cape May Convention Hall, 714 Beach Ave.

IS WAR WITH CHINA INEVITABLE? Presented by Dr. Steven David Dr. Steven David, Ph.D., professor at Johns Hopkins, an authority on international relations and three-time winner of the university’s “Outstanding Teacher Award,” presents “Is War with China Inevitable?” in this year’s annual Distinguished Lecture Series. David will speak on the critical issue of whether the rise of China makes a Sino-American war inevitable. Many scholars have argued that war is virtually certain when a rising power confronts the existing world leader. David’s lecture will examine both sides of this debate, and offer his own views as to who is right. He looks forward to a spirited discussion with the audience on what might be the most important issue confronting America and the world in the 21st century.

Cape May Presbyterian Church You are welcome to worship with us any Sunday, in person, on Facebook Live, or on Youtube at your leisure.

Our summer worship includes an 8:30am service, with traditional music, at the Decatur St. beach. Park in the church lot and walk the block and a half to the ocean and you will find us! Please bring your own seating. Those who prefer jazz, a later hour, and air conditioning are invited to join us at 11am for Celebration Worship in our beautiful sanctuary. On July 17 at 3 pm join us in our beautiful, air-conditioned, and acoustically amazing sanctuary, for an hour of jazz led by keyboardist Jason Long. For only a $10 donation you can support our church’s mission and the local music scene, as part of our monthly Jazz Vespers series. Our sanctuary is now open for prayer or quiet time from 9-11am on Mondays and Wednesdays. A deacon will be available if you have questions, but will not intrude if you want your solitude in our sacred space. We are accepting applications for vendors for our Fall Festival, Nov. 5. Our site fees are low and we have the perfect location for a pre-holiday event. Email our office for more information and an application form. You can find us on any time on our website, Facebook, Instagram, and Youtube, or by sending us an email or giving us a call. Our beach service is livestreamed on Facebook and available afterwards on YouTube.

As always, we are praying for you, and wishing you a wonderful summer!

HOUSE Museum

A hidden treasure in the heart of Cape May City Located next to Cape May City Hall, the Colonial House (c 1730) was originally a tavern and the family home of Revolutionary War Patriot Memucan Hughes. The front room features a tavern room. Other rooms open to the public in this unsung survivor from Cape Island’s very beginning depict a colonial era cooking/eating room. A fine example of vernacular architecture and one of only a few remaining colonial homes open to the public in Cape May County.

Open Season: June 15th through September 15th Wednesday through Saturday 1-4pm Saturdays: “The Historian is In” Free - Open to the Public Donations are most welcome for the preservation of the Colonial House

CAPE MAY’S

Stormy Past Every year, multiple nor’easters approach the Cape May area. While some have caused havoc and extensive damage, most have done little more than bring rougher than normal seas and extra precipitation. Virtually every time Cape May receives more than a few inches of snow, it’s caused by a nor’easter. Cape May has seen thousands of nor’easters over the years, but if you bring up the subject with residents and longtime visitors, there’s one particular storm that stands out among the rest. While it was never officially named,

it’s been called the “Five High Storm,” the “Great March Storm of 1962,” and it’s most commonly known as the “Ash Wednesday Storm of 1962.” Nor’easters are classified by an intensity range similar to the one used for hurricanes, known as the Dolan-Davis scale. The 1962 nor’easter was a Category 5. As you will soon see, the storm earned every bit of its dreadful reputation. Few storms are remembered by Cape May residents as vividly as the one that began on Ash Wednesday, March 5th, 1962. What had been predicted as

People searched through everything that was deposited on Beach Avenue in the wake of the 1962 nor’easter, looking for anything of value. State Troopers were called in during the storm after many of the local hotels and motels were hit by looting. -- Photo courtesy Reverend C. Wilbert Sterner

a minor nor’easter that would have little impact proved to be the exact opposite. Instead, Cape May was hammered for three straight days, with severe flooding and thunderous winds, accompanied by both snow and rain. The storm unexpectedly stalled over the Cape May area, lasting for a total of five high tides before it moved from the region. Making the situation even worse was the fact that it occurred around the time of the Spring Equinox, when the tides were already at their highest. The beachfront was torn apart, with buildings turned to rubble, the boardwalk smashed apart, Beach Avenue shattered into chunks of asphalt, and the sands eroded so badly that, in many areas, subsequent high tides brought the ocean right up to the road. To compound matters, the summer season was just two and a half months away. -- Story by Ben Miller

“I remember the storm of 1962 vividly! We lived on Idaho Avenue and watched the ocean waves come up Philadelphia Avenue. The water stopped at the beginning of our backyard. That went on for three days each time the tide came in! At the end of the storm, we walked down to Beach Drive. It was unbelievable how the street was lifted up and moved in large chunks. The ocean water was still below the street when we were walking on it. The beachfront houses looked like they had been hit by bombs. Splintered wood was everywhere!” -- Betty Ann Sherretta

There used to be a home around this fireplace, with a yard and a street out front. In front once stood the borough of South Cape May, now just a memory after the Great Atlantic Hurricane in September 1944. -- Photo courtesy Cape May Point State Park
