Each year, our tour of the Physick House Museum highlights a particular aspect of Victorian life and culture. Our tour this year focuses on the Physick House staff. Like many upper-class families of the era, Dr. Physick hired numerous local people to work at his estate. Learn about the staff, their duties, and their importance to the Physick family and the community.

The state park offers a Hawk Watch platform and nature trails, as well as a museum with live reptiles and nature displays, and there are covered pavilions and access to the beach (swimming is not allowed). You can also see the World War II bunker on the beach. Rest rooms are available in the park and there is ample free parking.

Working in the coal mines

Working children were common in the Victorian era in England, largely because poor families didn’t earn enough for food without it. One job that had high demand for children was work in the coal mines. Children made excellent coal miners because they could maneuver in tight spaces, and they required far less pay than adult workers. The children would work for 12 to 18 hours in air saturated with coal dust, and there was constant danger. Other jobs included chimney sweeping (where children could start working as young as 3) and working in factories or textile mills. In 1891, the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children was formed, offering some protection to child laborers. 29

UNDERGROUND RAILROAD TROLLEY TOUR & THE HARRIET TUBMAN MUSEUM Tuesdays: 9:30am

Visit the renowned Harriet Tubman Museum of New Jersey that tells the story of this hero of the Underground Railroad and combine it with the Underground Railroad Trolley Tour that is part of the National Park Service’s Network to Freedom. The Harriet Tubman Museum officially opened in 2021 to national accolades. Cape May was part of the Underground Railroad and this 2.5 hour combination tour tells the story of those dangerous days. Hear how legendary anti-slavery fighter, Harriet Tubman, walked these streets, as did prominent railroad businessman and former slave, Stephen Smith, whose railroad cars carried hundreds to freedom. The tour begins at the Washington Street Mall Information Booth and travels through parts of Cape May and West Cape May, with stops along the way, including the Mt. Zion Cemetery, and ends with a tour at the Harriet Tubman Museum of New Jersey.

HARRIET TUBMAN’S LIFE & WORK IN CAPE MAY Harriet Tubman lived in Cape May in the early 1850s, working to help fund her missions to guide enslaved people to freedom. After her initial journeys conducting freedom seekers to Canada, she returned to the states and earned money working in hotels and for private families as a cook. From Cape May, in the fall of 1852, she went back once more to Maryland, and brought away nine more fugitives. The New Jersey Historical Commission says she spent two other summers in Cape May. Cape May played a pivotal role in the fight to end slavery. Several historic figures critical to the fight against slavery spent their summers in Cape May. The Harriet Tubman Museum building is located on a block that anti-slavery activists called home in Cape May. Lafayette Street and Franklin Street became a center of abolitionist activity centered around three important buildings developed in 1846. 38

Man of the house The architecture of the Emlen Physick house, Cape May’s only Victorian house museum, is known as Stick Style. This style is characterized by an emphasis on horizontal, vertical and diagonal timbers that suggest the structural framework of the house. In reality, these “timbers” were not part of the framework, but were instead decorative pieces of lumber that were applied to the exterior. Often these pieces of applied timber were painted in a contrasting color to the main body of the house. Steep, irregular roof lines and an overall boxy and angular appearance are also trademarks of the Stick Style. The fact that the Physick family chose

The Stick Style is characterized by wood construction with boxy projections, such as bays, wings and towers; asymetrical forms and roof lines; a grid work of raised boards, called “stick work,” overlaying the clapboarded walls; and simple decorative elements, often geometric in design

Architect Frank Furness 1839-1912 to build their home in the Stick Style says something about their personality. The Stick Style was seen as somewhat avant garde and eccentric. When most people were building their homes in the Italianate, Queen Anne, or Gothic Revival Styles, the Physicks instead chose the Stick Style. The Physick House was designed by Philadelphia architect Frank Furness, who is now recognized as one of the country’s greatest Victorian architects. Furness designed numerous buildings in Philadelphia and had a summer house in Cape May. It seems likely that the Physicks might have met Furness during one of his stays in Cape May. Furness’ trademark features included greatly oversized corbelled (upside down) chimneys, jerkinhead dormers, and “dog bone” porch brackets. All three of these elements appear on the Physick House. Every scene produces more choices for the audience...who will the detective question next? The victim’s wife, or his therapist? Was the motive jealousy or a soured business deal? You build the case while the actors try to solve it. With 10,000 different possibilities, the same show will never be performed twice! This hilarious, fast paced romp turns improvisational theater on its ear by putting the audience completely in the driver seat, asking the question: Whose Crime Is It, Anyway?

A hidden treasure in the heart of Cape May City Located next to Cape May City Hall, the Colonial House (c 1730) was originally a tavern and the family home of Revolutionary War Patriot Memucan Hughes. The front room features a tavern room. Other rooms open to the public in this unsung survivor from Cape Island’s very beginning depict a colonial era cooking/eating room. A fine example of vernacular architecture and one of only a few remaining colonial homes open to the public in Cape May County.

Our summer worship includes an 8:30am service, with traditional music, at the Decatur St. beach. Park in the church lot and walk the block and a half to the ocean and you will find us! Please bring your own seating. Those who prefer jazz, a later hour, and air conditioning are invited to join us at 11am for Celebration Worship in our beautiful sanctuary. On July 17 at 3 pm join us in our beautiful, air-conditioned, and acoustically amazing sanctuary, for an hour of jazz led by keyboardist Jason Long. For only a $10 donation you can support our church’s mission and the local music scene, as part of our monthly Jazz Vespers series. Our sanctuary is now open for prayer or quiet time from 9-11am on Mondays and Wednesdays. A deacon will be available if you have questions, but will not intrude if you want your solitude in our sacred space. We are accepting applications for vendors for our Fall Festival, Nov. 5. IN VICTORIAN CAPE MAY Cape May is reputedly one of America’s most haunted towns, and nowhere else is this reputation so well-earned as at the 1879 Emlen Physick Estate, Cape May’s original haunted house. For years, MAC’s staffers had felt they were not alone in the house, but it was not until psychic medium Craig McManus began his investigations into the town’s paranormal activities that those who were not regular members of the MAC staff were identified. McManus, who has written several books about Cape May’s hauntings and has documented spirit activity at dozens of the town’s quaint B&B inns and hotel properties, has spent a great deal of time at the Physick house and has identified several of its residents. Most prominent among them is Dr. Physick’s Aunt Emilie, who has great energy and a vibrant smile, according to McManus. “This is a ghost who knows everything that is going on in her home,” McManus wrote. He also explained that, after her death, Emilie had stayed on to watch over the house, which had fallen into disrepair before its restoration began in 1970. Dr. Physick’s mother, Frances Ralston, is no longer in the house, according to McManus, but the strong presence she exerted in her lifetime is still felt as “residual energy,” especially in her bedroom on the second floor, the paranormal hot spot of the home. Another resident is Isabelle, or Bella, Mrs. Ralston’s invalid younger sister who died in 1883, shortly after the family

moved into the mansion. Among the unique spirits that McManus has reported are several of Dr. Physick’s dogs. He encountered several in the house on his first visit, and one romping through the gardens on a later visit. Apparently, there is some disturbance when the dogs are about, because they were never allowed in the house by Mrs. Ralston. Aunt Emilie, however, had a softer spot for Dr. Physick’s canine companions, and prepared their dinners in the estate’s kitchen, and would let them in the house when Mrs. Ralston was absent. The estate’s Carriage House also has its resident spirit, which has been heard by several of the MAC staff whose offices are on the building’s second floor. McManus said this could be one of the servants, possibly a groomsman or driver. One of MAC’s most popular ghost tours is Seance at the Physick Estate, where McManus leads a group of 25 people through the house to commune with its spirit residents. “Cape May’s original haunted house never disappoints,” McManus wrote about a recent tour. “It was one of the best haunting experiences I have had in my career! “There are very few real haunted mansions of this caliber that are open to the public,” he wrote in his book. “If you love the paranormal, this is a must visit!”
