Creepy Victorian food

12:30pm

Victorians ate virtually every part of an animal, supping on delicacies likes brains and hearts. Another famous dish from the Victorian era was turtle soup. The turtle was prized above all for its green jelly-like fat which was used to flavor the soup made from the long-boiled stringy flesh of the animal. 26

The Widow of Windsor

When Queen Victoria lost her husband Albert in 1861, the Queen went into immediate mourning, and wore black for the next 40 years until her death. During this extended mourning period, she generally lived in seclusion and didn’t attend public events, earning herself the nickname the “Widow of Windsor.” Ironically, Victoria disliked black at funerals, and ensured that the streets of London were decorated in purple and white when she died. 27

Bottling tears

1:30pm

It wasn’t just Queen Victoria mourning her husband—mourning was a serious business in the Victorian Era. Beautiful, elaborate mourning jewelry would be created for women in mourning, which would incorporate onyx or jet (both black stones) and braided hair from the deceased. Tears cried for the deceased would be collected in bottles, and if you were a bachelor who didn’t leave a widow behind, you could always hire a local blonde woman to wail at your grave and make it seem like you were adored. 28

Stay healthy

3:30pm

In a time when one in four patients died after surgery, you were very lucky in Victorian times to have a good doctor with a clean operating theatre. There was no anesthesia, no painkillers for after, and no electric equipment to reduce the duration of an operation. Victorian surgery wasn’t just creepy, it was outright horrific. 30

Stay healthy

In a time when one in four patients died after surgery, you were very lucky in Victorian times to have a good doctor with a clean operating theatre. There was no anesthesia, no painkillers for after, and no electric equipment to reduce the duration of an operation. Victorian surgery wasn’t just creepy, it was outright horrific. 32

Working in the coal mines

Working children were common in the Victorian era in England, largely because poor families didn’t earn enough for food without it. One job that had high demand for children was work in the coal mines. Children made excellent coal miners because they could maneuver in tight spaces, and they required far less pay than adult workers. The children would work for 12 to 18 hours in air saturated with coal dust, and there was constant danger. Other jobs included chimney sweeping (where children could start working as young as 3) and working in factories or textile mills. In 1891, the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children was formed, offering some protection to child laborers. 33

Busy hands

So many women’s activities of the mid and late 19th century served to show that they were middle class. Making artificial flowers was one of these. Both time-consuming and useless, making artificial flowers proved that your husband’s income made it possible for you to do no housework. Along with disabling clothing and countless crafts, flower-making was a visible sign of middle-class-ness. The conventions of the time made women almost literally prisoners in their parlors. 39

GREATER CAPE MAY HISTORICAL SOCIETY

COLONIAL

HOUSE Museum

A hidden treasure in the heart of Cape May City Located next to Cape May City Hall, the Colonial House (c 1730) was originally a tavern and the family home of Revolutionary War Patriot Memucan Hughes. The front room features a tavern room. Other rooms open to the public in this unsung survivor from Cape Island’s very beginning depict a colonial era cooking/eating room. A fine example of vernacular architecture and one of only a few remaining colonial homes open to the public in Cape May County.

Open Season: June 15th through September 15th Wednesday through Saturday 1-4pm Saturdays: “The Historian is In” Free - Open to the Public Donations are most welcome for the preservation of the Colonial House

Our summer worship includes an 8:30 am service, with traditional music, at the Decatur Street beach. Park in the church lot and walk the block and a half to the ocean and you will find us! Please bring your own seating. Those who prefer jazz, a later hour, and air conditioning are invited to join us at 11 am for Celebration Worship in our beautiful sanctuary. Celebrate Juneteenth with the George A. Johnson Quintet, on June 19th at 3 pm in our beautiful and acoustically amazing sanctuary, for only a $10 donation, as part of our monthly Jazz Vespers series. Our sanctuary is also open for prayer or quiet time from 9-11 am on Mondays. A deacon will be available if you have questions, but will not intrude if you want your solitude in our sacred space. There’s no better way to enjoy Cape May than as a Cape May MAC Member! And remember, your support helps Cape May MAC with the preservation of all the things you love about Cape May! As a member of Cape May MAC, your membership dues directly supports our mission of promoting preservation, culture and the arts in Cape May. You also play a role in continuing our non-profit’s 50+ year history of interpreting Cape May’s heritage – from our inception by rescuing the Emlen Physick Estate from demolition, to developing Victorian era tourism, restoring the historic Cape May Lighthouse and World War II Lookout Tower, providing museum education, celebrating the arts by creating the Cape May Music Festival, and leading the way in expanding the region’s tourism season.

Becoming a Cape May MAC member, or renewing your existing membership, is a true investment in keeping this mission alive for generations to come. There is no better way to show your love and appreciation for Cape May’s past than to invest in its future. And remember, your Membership is tax-deductible and brings with it free and discounted tours, discounts in our Museum Shops and Vintage BYOB, advance notice of upcoming events and more!
