Dr. Steven David, Ph.D., professor at Johns Hopkins, an authority on international relations and three-time winner of the university’s “Outstanding Teacher Award,” presents “Is War with China Inevitable?” in this year’s annual Distinguished Lecture Series. David will speak on the critical issue of whether the rise of China makes a Sino-American war inevitable. Many scholars have argued that war is virtually certain when a rising power confronts the existing world leader. David’s lec ture will examine both sides of this debate, and offer his own views as to who is right. He looks forward to a spirited discussion with the audience on what might be the most important issue confronting America and the world in the 21st century.

In the Victorian era, collecting was a major part of people’s lives. Collections often included “curiosities” such as zoological, bo tanical or geological finds. Shrunken heads, seashells, antique weapons and clockworks were commonly collected items. These collections would be displayed in a large “cabinet of cu riosities.” If you wanted to expand your collection? Just go to the curiosity shop.

In a time when one in four patients died after surgery, you were very lucky in Victorian times to have a good doctor with a clean operating theatre. There was no anesthesia, no painkillers for after, and no electric equipment to reduce the duration of an operation. Victorian surgery wasn’t just creepy, it was outright horrific.
Cape May MAC has a couple of ways to get the family together for some fresh air and FREE family fun while getting a taste of some of the town’s unique historical treasures!
Have an adventure at the 1879 Emlen Physick Estate! Use our map to explore the grounds and find the answers to questions about the Physick family and life in Victorian times on this educational scavenger hunt. Includes map and clues.
Confiscate the electronic devices and get the whole family together for a fun time! Architecture is lots of fun, especially when you look at it from a kid’s perspective and set out in search of witches’ hats and fish scales. This packet includes a clues sheet and map that will take you on a self-guided discovery tour, set to your own pace (answer sheet also included). (Only one packet is needed per family). Co-sponsored by Cape May MAC and Preservation New Jersey. Both activities are available daily FREE (donations accepted), at Hill House office at the Physick Estate, 1048 Washington St. Also available at the Washington Street Mall Information Booth and the Carriage House Visitors Center at the Physick Estate (see Calendar for dates & times)

By 1860, England’s Thames River was full of the raw fecal matter and sewage that was being dumped into the water on a daily basis. Since the river was also the main source of drinking water for the city, people died by the thousands from dysentery, cholera, and typhoid. Once again, a great excuse to opt for beer.

Parlor games were extremely popular with Victorians, especially at Christmastime. One game was called “Snapdragon,” during which a bunch of raisins were put into a bowl with rum and set on fire. The object of the game was to get the raisins out of the bowl and eat them while they were still on fire. Some games from that era which were simpler and safer are still played today, like charades, and an early version of musical chairs.

In the Victorian era, arsenic wasn’t regarded as a poison in the same way it is today. Women would apply it topically as an agefighting cosmetic, and men would take arsenic pills to get their engines revving. It took many cases of illness and quite a few fatalities before they figured out that arsenic was toxic.

It wasn’t just Queen Victoria mourning her husband—mourning was a serious business in the Victorian Era. Beautiful, elaborate mourning jewelry would be created for women in mourning, which would incorporate onyx or jet (both black stones) and braided hair from the deceased. Tears cried for the deceased would be collected in bottles, and if you were a bachelor who didn’t leave a widow behind, you could always hire a local blonde woman to wail at your grave and make it seem like you were adored.

So many women’s activities of the mid and late 19th century served to show that they were middle class. Making artificial flowers was one of these. Both time-consuming and useless, making artificial flowers proved that your husband’s income made it possible for you to do no housework. Along with disabling clothing and countless crafts, flower-making was a visible sign of middle-class-ness. The conventions of the time made women almost literally prisoners in their parlors.

Without the light of the moon, you see the stars shine! Climb the 199 steps to the top of the Cape May Lighthouse on evenings of the New Moon and the start of a new 29.5-day lunar cycle, when the moon is so dark it blends in with the night sky and is invisible to the naked eye. Stars and constellations are more visible on clear nights during the New Moon! Binoculars are permitted if securely worn around the neck at all times
Cape May MAC is embarking on a project to install an HVAC system and fire suppression in the Physick House Museum. We’ve secured the planning and capital grants but now we need the matching funds. Your contribution to help us meet that match is greatly appreciated. Together, we will bring these plans through to fruition.
If the Cape May Lighthouse is an important part of your life, now you can honor or remember that “Light” in your life or simply your own or your family’s love of the Lighthouse with an engraved brick, a permanent part of the repaved pathway leading up to the Lighthouse.

“Our existence and
ghost’s existence can be much more entwined than we think—and we may never even realize it. The living and the dead move within the same space, but seldom collide. When I work as a Medium, I have to move my consciousness into the ghost realm, the plane where ghosts exist, in order to read their thoughts.”
