Poison me!

In the Victorian era, arsenic wasn’t regarded as a poison in the same way it is today. Women would apply it topically as an agefighting cosmetic, and men would take arsenic pills to get their engines revving. It took many cases of illness and quite a few fa talities before they figured out that arsenic was toxic.

TROLLEY TOUR

The roots of Cape Island and the surrounding area’s economy are in whaling and farming and while new industries have evolved since then, that heritage is still celebrated today. This 45-minute tour tells you how whalers centu ries ago eked out a dangerous but lucrative living near Town Bank and how the area’s rich farming heritage continues to be a source of tremendous community pride. Learn about the Union Bethel community in 1831 in which Black residents thrived and the diverse community that continues to contribute to the vibrancy of island life today.

Adults $20; Children (ages 3-12) $15

By 1860, England’s Thames River was full of the raw fecal matter and sewage that was being dumped into the water on a daily basis. Since the river was also the main source of drinking water for the city, people died by the thousands from dysentery, cholera, and typhoid. Once again, a great excuse to opt for beer.

HARRIET TUBMAN’S LIFE & WORK IN CAPE MAY

Harriet Tubman lived in Cape May in the early 1850s, working to help fund her missions to guide enslaved people to freedom. After her initial journeys conducting freedom seekers to Canada, she returned to the states and earned money working in hotels and for private families as a cook. From Cape May, in the fall of 1852, she went back once more to Maryland, and brought away nine more fugitives. The New Jersey Historical Commission says she spent two other summers in Cape May. Cape May played a pivotal role in the fight to end slavery. Several historic figures critical to the fight against slavery spent their summers in Cape May. The Harriet Tubman Museum building is located on a block that anti-slavery activists called home in Cape May. Lafayette Street and Franklin Street became a center of abolitionist activity cen tered around three important buildings developed in 1846.

COLONIAL HOUSE Museum

A hidden treasure in the heart of Cape May City

Located next to Cape May City Hall, the Colonial House (c 1730) was originally a tavern and the family home of Revolutionary War Patriot Memucan Hughes. The front room features a tavern room. Other rooms open to the public in this unsung survivor from Cape Island’s very beginning depict a colonial era cooking/eating room. A fine example of vernacular architecture and one of only a few remaining colonial homes open to the public in Cape May County.

Closing Sept.15th

After Sept. 15, send email to: 1730colonialhouse@gmail.com

Free admission; Donations are most welcome for the preservation of the Colonial House

We go on holding our 8:30am worship service at the beach through September and October. Find us at 8:30am at the Decatur St. beach. Park in the church lot and walk the block and a half to the ocean and we’ll be there! Please bring your own seating.

Those who prefer jazz, a later hour, and air conditioning are invited to join us at 11am for Celebration Worship in our beautiful sanctuary.

And because we really love jazz, we host a monthly Jazz Vespers series. Join us on Sept. 18 at 3pm to hear some jazz greats from Jersey and beyond, in our beautiful and acoustically amazing sanctuary, for only a $10 donation, as part of our monthly Jazz Vespers series.

Our sanctuary is also open for prayer or quiet time from 9-11am on Mondays and Wednesdays. A deacon will be available if you have questions, but will not intrude if you want your solitude in our sacred space.

You can find us on any time on our website, Facebook, Instagram, and Youtube, or by sending us an email or giving us a call. Our beach service is livestreamed on Facebook and available afterwards on YouTube.

As always, we are praying for you, and wishing you a lovely, safe autumn at the shore!!

LESSONS OF HISTORY

10th Annual Distinguished Lecture Series

Sunday, Oct. 9, 2022: 5PM Cape May Convention Hall, 714 Beach Ave.

Is WAR WITH CHINA inevitable?

Dr. Steven David, Ph.D., professor at Johns Hopkins, an authority on international relations and three-time winner of the university’s “Outstanding Teacher Award,” presents “Is War with China Inevitable?” in this year’s annual Distinguished Lecture Series. David will speak on the critical issue of whether the rise of China makes a Sino-American war inevitable. Many scholars have argued that war is virtually certain when a rising power confronts the existing world leader. David’s lecture will examine both sides of this debate, and offer his own views as to who is right. He looks forward to a spirited discussion with the audience on what might be the most important issue confronting America and the world in the 21st century.
