From the Director

Cape May MAC is pleased to have been permitted to resume some of our operations — specifically tours at the Cape May Lighthouse, Emlen Physick House Museum and World War II Lookout Tower. And recently, our trolleys have begun to roll again. We have steadfastly adhered to all government-mandated restrictions and precautions, including capacity limits, social distancing, providing PPE, disinfecting, and regular cleaning. The drastic reduction in ticket sales and additional precautionary expenditures as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic have taken a huge toll. Further, all four of our Physick Estate Festivals have been cancelled. Cape May MAC is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization. Now more than ever, we need you to show how you’ve appreciated what Cape May MAC has provided culturally to enrich your life during our 50-year history, so that we can continue to do so for you and future generations of your family. Of course, donations are most welcome and appreciated. As are ticket purchases now that can be used, once we’re back in operation, for any number of Cape May MAC tours and events. Everything helps. And please don’t forget to patronize our local businesses, many of whom help support us through advertising in The Week in Cape May and as event sponsors. We’re happy to welcome you back and hope you enjoy your tour of the Physick Estate, a visit to the Cape May Lighthouse or the World War II Lookout Tower, a trolley tour or our new walking tour. In an abundance of caution, Cape May MAC requires that you do the following: • Keep 6 feet apart from anyone not in your party. • Wear a mask at all times while participating in our tours. We will be asking all visitors the following questions upon check-in: • Are you experiencing flu-like symptoms? • Have you been in contact with anyone infected with COVID-19? • Have you traveled to a high-risk area or country? If you have answered “yes” to any of these questions, we respectfully ask that you do not participate at this time, and return after being asymptomatic for 14 days. If a guest’s temperature is 100.4 or more, we require her/him to take a seat in the shade, and retest in 10 minutes; or, come again at another time. We are requiring the same of our Cape May MAC employees & volunteers. To further ensure your safety, all of our historic sites and our trolleys are getting routine deep cleaning with disinfecting products.

This Old House PRESERVATION OF THE PHYSICK ESTATE Each year, our tour of the Physick House Museum highlights a particular aspect of Victorian life and culture. This year marks Cape May MAC’s 50th Anniversary, and our tours will focus on the Physick House itself. It is fitting, since this is where Cape May MAC began, in its efforts to save the house from the wrecking ball. You will learn of the mansion’s years as a grand residence for the Physick family, to its tragic decline and near demolition and, finally, to its rise as a fully-restored historic landmark. Come join us to learn the compelling story of its life.

The state park offers a Hawk Watch platform and nature trails, as well as a museum with live reptiles and nature displays, and there are covered pavilions and access to the beach (swimming is not allowed). You can also see the World War II bunker on the beach. Rest rooms are available in the park and there is ample free parking.

50 Years of

MAC

The 50-year journey of the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts & Humanities (MAC) began in 1970 when a small group of dedicated neighbors joined together to save the 1879 Emlen Physick Estate from the wrecker’s ball. Over the years, the organization’s efforts have continued, restoring and opening both the Cape May Lighthouse and the World War II Lookout Tower. Those years also included thousands of special events and tours, all of which contributed to make Cape May MAC Cape May’s leader in heritage tourism, educational outreach, historic preservation and cultural enrichment.

It wasn’t just Queen Victoria mourning her husband—mourning was a serious business in the Victorian Era. Beautiful, elaborate mourning jewelry would be created for women in mourning, which would incorporate onyx or jet (both black stones) and braided hair from the deceased. Tears cried for the deceased would be collected in bottles, and if you were a bachelor who didn’t leave a widow behind, you could always hire a local blonde woman to wail at your grave and make it seem like you were adored. 22

Tickets & Information WASHINGTON STREET MALL INFORMATION BOOTH

Located at the Ocean Street end of the Washington Street Mall, the Information Booth sells tickets for any of our tours and events and provides answers to any questions you might have about what to do in Cape May. The trolley stop for our tours is located across the street from the Information Booth.

CARRIAGE HOUSE VISITORS CENTER

Located in the 1876 Carriage House on the grounds of the Emlen Physick Estate, 1048 Washington St. You may purchase tickets here for any tours or events. Free parking is available on the grounds of the Emlen Physick Estate. The Carriage House is also home to the Carriage House Museum Shop, the Carroll Gallery and Vintage restaurant. The Carriage House is fully accessible.

HILL HOUSE OFFICE

Located on the grounds of the Emlen Physick Estate, 1048 Washington St., Hill House is home to Cape May MAC’s business office. If you ordered advance tickets, you can pick them up here, as well as purchase tickets here for any tours or events. Hill House is open daily (Winter hours, closed on Sundays); check calendar for hours. Free parking is available on the grounds of the Emlen Physick Estate.

Busy hands

So many women’s activities of the mid and late 19th century served to show that they were middle class. Making artificial flowers was one of these. Both time-consuming and useless, making artificial flowers proved that your husband’s income made it possible for you to do no housework. Along with disabling clothing and countless crafts, flower-making was a visible sign of middle-class-ness. The conventions of the time made women almost literally prisoners in their parlors. 28

This boat helps to illuminate life-saving history at the Jersey Shore and is an integral part of U.S. Lifesaving Service and U.S. Coast Guard history. Circa late 1800s-1930s, the Monomoys are 26 feet long and most weigh more than 2,000 lbs. The design developed from boats used to hunt whales. Come learn more at your next Lighthouse visit! The boat is a restoration project of the Cape May Maritime and Educational Center and will be on long-term display here, in association with Cape May MAC 33

DR. PHYSICK’S MODEL T

Dr. Physick owned a number of vehicles including a 1915 Model T Ford Runabout. As you can see from the photo, Dr. Physick had the car converted to a pickup truck. This was easily accomplished by removing the rear turtle deck, the section of the car that contained the trunk, and putting on a truck bed instead. A forward-thinking individual, Dr. Physick is said to have owned the first automobile in town. His mother, Mrs. Ralston, was not fond of the new invention and insisted that there always be a carriage in the Carriage House for her use. 49

Park at our lot on Decatur Street and Columbia and walk directly to the surf from there—we are just inside the Decatur Street entrance. Please wear a mask! As long as we can do so safely, we will also be gathering in our beautiful sanctuary at 11am for another short, sweet, socially distanced service of worship.
