THIS WEEK inCAPE MAY
Vol. XLVIII Number 8 AUG. 7-20, 2020
From the Director
Cape May MAC is pleased to have been permitted to resume some of our operations — specifically tours at the Cape May Lighthouse, Emlen Physick House Museum and World War II Lookout Tower. And recently, our trolleys have begun to roll again. We have steadfastly adhered to all government-mandated restrictions and precautions, including capacity limits, social distancing, providing PPE, disinfecting, and regular cleaning. The drastic reduction in ticket sales and additional precautionary expenditures as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic have taken a huge toll. Further, all four of our Physick Estate Festivals have been cancelled. Cape May MAC is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization. Now more than ever, we need you to show how you’ve appreciated what Cape May MAC has provided culturally to enrich your life during our 50-year history, so that we can continue to do so for you and future generations of your family. Of course, donations are most welcome and appreciated. As are ticket purchases now that can be used, once we’re back in operation, for any number of Cape May MAC tours and events. Everything helps. And please don’t forget to patronize our local businesses, many of whom help support us through advertising in The Week in Cape May and as event sponsors. Seasonal businesses don’t have as much time to recover. Sincerest wishes for a healthy rest of the summer to you and all yours. Jody Alessandrine Director/CEO

Welcome to Cape May MAC! We’re happy to welcome you back and hope you enjoy your tour of the Physick Estate, a visit to the Cape May Lighthouse or the World War II Lookout Tower, a trolley tour or our new walking tour. In an abundance of caution, Cape May MAC requires that you do the following: • Keep 6 feet apart from anyone not in your party. • Wear a mask at all times while participating in our tours. We will be asking all visitors the following questions upon check-in: • Are you experiencing flu-like symptoms? • Have you been in contact with anyone infected with COVID-19? • Have you traveled to a high-risk area or country? If you have answered “yes” to any of these questions, we respectfully ask that you do not participate at this time, and return after being asymptomatic for 14 days. If a guest’s temperature is 100.4 or more, we require her/him to take a seat in the shade, and retest in 10 minutes; or, come again at another time. We are requiring the same of our Cape May MAC employees & volunteers. To further ensure your safety, all of our historic sites and our trolleys are getting routine deep cleaning with disinfecting products.
If you have any questions, please call us at 609-884-5404 6

This Old House PRESERVATION OF THE PHYSICK ESTATE Each year, our tour of the Physick House Museum highlights a particular aspect of Victorian life and culture. This year marks Cape May MAC’s 50th Anniversary, and our tours will focus on the Physick House itself. It is fitting, since this is where Cape May MAC began, in its efforts to save the house from the wrecking ball. You will learn of the mansion’s years as a grand residence for the Physick family, to its tragic decline and near demolition and, finally, to its rise as a fully-restored historic landmark. Come join us to learn the compelling story of its life.

Ooh! Yum!!
Street vendors of the Victorian age sold some unusual foods. One popular delicacy was sheep’s feet, which were sold hot or cold. They were called trotters, and could be purchased at a low price from slaughterhouses, so vendors would buy them and prepare them at home by skinning and parboiling them, before selling them to workers in the street. Customers would then suck the meat and fat off the bones. 19

Stay healthy
In a time when one in four patients died after surgery, you were very lucky in Victorian times to have a good doctor with a clean operating theatre. There was no anesthesia, no painkillers for after, and no electric equipment to reduce the duration of an operation. Victorian surgery wasn’t just creepy, it was outright horrific. 21

50 Years of
MAC
The 50-year journey of the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts & Humanities (MAC) began in 1970 when a small group of dedicated neighbors joined together to save the 1879 Emlen Physick Estate from the wrecker’s ball. Over the years, the organization’s efforts have continued, restoring and opening both the Cape May Lighthouse and the World War II Lookout Tower. Those years also included thousands of special events and tours, all of which contributed to make Cape May MAC Cape May’s leader in heritage tourism, educational outreach, historic preservation and cultural enrichment.

Working in the coal mines
Working children were common in the Victorian era in England, largely because poor families didn’t earn enough for food without it. One job that had high demand for children was work in the coal mines. Children made excellent coal miners because they could maneuver in tight spaces, and they required far less pay than adult workers. The children would work for 12 to 18 hours in air saturated with coal dust, and there was constant danger. Other jobs included chimney sweeping (where children could start working as young as 3) and working in factories or textile mills. In 1891, the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children was formed, offering some protection to child laborers.

Poison me!
In the Victorian era, arsenic wasn’t regarded as a poison in the same way it is today. Women would apply it topically as an agefighting cosmetic, and men would take arsenic pills to get their engines revving. It took many cases of illness and quite a few fatalities before they figured out that arsenic was toxic. 31

Au Naturel
Makeup was considered gauche for a society woman to wear, as it was used mostly by prostitutes. One judge even proclaimed lipstick to be similar to witchcraft, in that it had the ability to seduce men. If you were a society woman, you would probably pinch your cheeks in an attempt to give yourself a glow, and you might use cold cream to appear youthful and dewy. If you felt risqué, you might apply the tiniest amount of rouge to your cheeks.

BEAT THE HEAT!
COOL ideas for HOT
summer days!
HISTORY IS COOL! And so is the AIRCONDITIONED Emlen Physick Estate. Cape May’s only Victorian house museum is a great way to beat the heat and see what life was like more than 140 years ago for this Cape May family. We offer the ultimate Cape May tour: a Combination Trolley/Physick Estate Tour! The trolley portion is open-air, and tours of the Estate are limited and safety guidelines apply. Includes a visit to the air-conditioned Carroll Gallery in the Carriage House to see the current exhibit “50 Years of MAC.” -- See pages 7, 10, 27
COOL AT THE TOP. You may warm up as you climb the 199 steps to the top of the Cape May Lighthouse, but it’s worth it for the cool breezes at the top, and the view is the coolest. Also visit the World War II Lookout Tower... not as many steps to the top and still keeps the family out of the sun! -- See pages 8 & 9 GET WATER COOLED...Board the Cape May Whale Watcher for a cool ride around the Cape. You’ll learn about our maritime history and see dolphins frolicking in the wake as you enjoy the cool ocean breezes. Morning, afternoon and evening tours are available. -- See pages 39, 74
A COOL BRUNCH is a great way to escape the heat, under the patio tent overlooking the cool gardens, at Vintage, the exciting new restaurant on the grounds of the Physick Estate that has everyone talking. You can also come for dinner, and be sure to enjoy a bottle of wine from Cape May Winery, available at the Carriage House Museum Shop, where you’ll find plenty of cool gifts, too! -- See page 57
TROLLEY TOURS are the coolest way to see and learn about Cape May and its colorful history. We have a variety of daytime and evening open-air trolley tours the whole family will enjoy. -- See calendar for times
GHOSTS ARE COOL... and Cape May is one of the most haunted places you’ll ever visit. After the sun goes down, you’ll hear all about them around town. Take a Ghosts of Cape May Trolley Tour and learn about our resident spirits, or a Historic Haunts House Tour of the Physick Estate and learn about the Victorians’ fascination with spiritualism. Combine both experiences in the Historic Haunts Combo Tour! -- See page 22
PICNICS are cool and you’ll find plenty of tables on the shady grounds of the Physick Estate. Get some take-out from Vintage, the new restaurant on the grounds, a bottle of wine from Cape May Winery (available at our Carriage House Museum Shop), and chill out. Take a stroll and learn about the Estate on the Physick Estate Scavenger Hunt and be sure to see the “50 Years of MAC Exhibit” at the Carroll Gallery. -- See pages 57, 40 & 27

First Presbyterian Church of Cape May
Loving...Inclusive...Affirming Cape May Presbyterian Church is at the beach and in the sanctuary!
Every Sunday through Labor Day, we will be meeting for a short, sweet, and socially distanced worship service at the beach at 8:30am. Park at our lot on Decatur Street and Columbia and walk directly to the surf from there—we are just inside the Decatur Street entrance. Please wear a mask! We recommend you bring an umbrella and bottle of water, as well as your own beach chair. It can be quite warm out there! As long as we can do so safely, we will also be gathering in our beautiful sanctuary at 11am for another short, sweet, socially distanced service of worship. We have plenty of room for people to spread out, we will not be singing together or passing anything from hand to hand, and we will have wipes available. We are scheduling this service week by week, so please check our website (firstpresbycapemay. com) or our Facebook page to verify before you come. You can also find us on Instagram and Youtube, send us an email, or give us a call. As always, we are praying for you!

Keepers of the Light For the first 77 years of its existence, Cape May’s lighthouse was looked after by a Head Keeper, First Assistant Keeper and Second Assistant Keeper. It was their job to light the lantern each night at sunset, ensure it remained lit throughout the night and extinguish it the following morning. In addition, they were tasked by the United States Lighthouse Service with keeping the tower and Keeper’s dwellings painted and properly maintained, storing the massive amounts of oil and other equipment used in the original lanterns, taking care of the expansive lighthouse property and meticulously cleaning the lantern each day. Routine inspections were held by the Lighthouse Service and any deficiency was immediately addressed. William C. Gregory was the first Head Keeper, aided by assistants Samuel Stilwell and John Reeves. Gregory had been the sole keeper of the previous Cape May lighthouse, which was replaced after just 12 years in service. Following his retirement in 1861, he was succeeded as Head Keeper by
Downes E. Foster, Samuel Stillwell, Caleb S. Woolsen, and finally, Harry H. Palmer. The lantern was automated in 1936, making the Keeper and Assistant Keeper positions no longer necessary. Two homes were built just south of the lighthouse in 1860, one for the Head Keeper and the other for his assistants. It proved to be cramped quarters for the two assistants and their families, leading to requests for additional quarters in 1879 and 1896. They finally got their wish when a long-awaited addition was added to the assistant’s home in 1903. Despite retiring and being given his pension following the light’s automation, Palmer chose to stay in the Keeper’s house and maintain the property for the Lighthouse Service. He, his wife and two daughters lived comfortably there for many years. Today, the site is looked after by MAC staff members, one of whom is Palmer’s own granddaughter, Mayhugh Palmer Tees. -- Story by Ben Miller
PHOTOS: Above, Head Keeper Harry H. Palmer. Note that the ladder behind him is OUTSIDE the railing of the watch gallery. A fear of heights was not acceptable for keepers! At right is a photo of the two houses, home to the Head Keeper and his assistants.
