The Victorians ate virtually every part of an animal. This is not entirely creepy if you are a food fanatic but for most people, the idea of supping on a bowl of brains and heart is not appealing. Another famous dish from the Victorian era was turtle soup. The turtle was prized above all for its green jelly-like fat which was used to flavor the soup made from the long-boiled stringy flesh of the animal. 14

So many women’s activities of the mid and late 19th century served to show that they were middle class. Making artificial flowers was one of these. Both time-consuming and useless, making artificial flowers proved that your husband’s income made it possible for you to do no housework. Along with disabling clothing and countless crafts, flower-making was a visible sign of middle-class-ness. The conventions of the time made women almost literally prisoners in their parlors.

The accepted career for women in the Victorian era was marriage. To get ready for courtship and marriage a girl was groomed like a racehorse. In addition to being able to sing, play an instrument and speak a little French or Italian, the qualities a young Victorian gentlewoman needed were to be innocent, virtuous, biddable, dutiful and be ignorant of intellectual opinion. Yeah, right.

MAC

TROLLEY TOUR

Saturday, Feb. 15: 2:15pm

Take a narrated trolley tour through West Cape May highlighting its history, farms, shops, vintage cottages, Native American and African American heritage. Then, see the Whalers Cottages at Batts Lane. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, The Owen Coachman House (pictured here) incorporates a c. 1700 “Whalers Cottage” — one of the oldest surviving structures in Cape May County. It was moved to this site in 1846 by Owen Coachman, a free Black man who purchased land here for a farm. A tour of this site brings to life the important story of our county’s free African American community in the years before the Civil War.

GREATER CAPE MAY HISTORICAL SOCIETY

COLONIAL

HOUSE Museum

A hidden treasure in the heart of Cape May City Located next to Cape May City Hall, the Colonial House (c 1730), was originally a tavern and the family home of Revolutionary War Patriot Memucan Hughes. The front room features a tavern room. Other rooms open to the public in this unsung survivor from Cape Island’s very beginning depict a colonial era cooking/ eating room. A fine example of vernacular architecture and colonial living back in the days.

50 Years of

MAC

MAC

The 50-year journey

of the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts & Humanities (MAC) began in 1970 when a small group of dedicated neighbors joined together to save the 1879 Emlen Physick Estate from the wrecker’s ball. Over the years, the organization’s efforts have continued, restoring and opening both the Cape May Lighthouse and the World War II Lookout Tower. Those years also included thousands of special events and tours, all of which contributed to make MAC Cape May’s leader in heritage tourism, educational outreach, historic preservation and cultural enrichment.

Stay healthy

In a time when one in four patients died after surgery, you were very lucky in Victorian times to have a good doctor with a clean operating theatre. There was no anesthesia, no painkillers for after, and no electric equipment to reduce the duration of an operation. Victorian surgery wasn’t just creepy, it was outright horrific. 65

Hitting the gym

Like today, many a Victorian man or woman thought working out and trying to get the perfect body would make life lovely. Victorians were often obsessive about health, fitness and beauty — the ones who could afford to spend many hours bodybuilding did so. This would also include many new dietary fads and exercise routines that would come and go just as they do these days. The idea was to eventually achieve the “Grecian ideal,” the perfect physique.

Watch what you say

It was not the easiest thing to “reach out and touch someone” in Cape May of long ago, but the completion of the first telephone system in the spring of 1895 certainly made things easier. With a manager and two operators, the exchange was open from 6 a.m. to midnight, with a pay station in West Cape May and another at Schellenger’s Landing. It cost 10 cents to use the phone. Phones could be put in private homes for $16 per year, and in business places for $30 per year. Of course, if a subscriber used profane language while speaking on the phone, it would be removed immediately. 72

Say cheese

In the Victorian era, photography was young and extremely costly. When a loved one died, their relatives would sometimes have a photograph taken of the corpse in a pose – oftentimes with other members of the family. For the vast majority of Victorians, this was the only time they would be photographed. In these post-mortem photographs, the effect of life was sometimes enhanced by either propping the subject’s eyes open or painting pupils onto the photographic print, and many early images have a rosy tint added to the cheeks of the corpse. Adults were more commonly posed in chairs or even braced on specially-designed frames. 74

Bucket brigade

The Cape May Lighthouse was originally staffed by keepers who worked for the U.S. Lighthouse Service. Cape May’s lighthouse generally had one head keeper and two assistants. They carried oil to the top of the tower every day to power the light, and kept the lens apparatus clean and in working order. Keepers’ pay averaged $600 a year around the turn of the 20th century. 78

Time for tea A late-19th century tea, whether served for one’s own family or for guests, was the epitome of tradition and hospitality. It was a chance to gather for some restful moments with one’s spouse and children, or it was an opportunity for refined social interaction with friends. Tea fare ranged from thin sandwiches and cakes to whole meals, and always included tea, coffee or cocoa. “Tea” in the Victorian era could mean either a simple drink, or a whole meal. Tea was an important beverage at two different family meals, breakfast and “tea.” At breakfast, tea was served and drunk without the ritual that was typical of the latter event. In the morning, tea was probably served in a ceramic teapot, while afternoon or evening tea required the use of the silver or silverplated teapot. There seem to have been two types of tea – afternoon and evening tea. Afternoon tea was a holdover from the 18th century tradition of taking tea around

four o’clock, and was specifically a female event, although the men might have joined the gathering at the end of their workday. Some families expanded afternoon tea into an entire meal, referred to as high tea or six o’clock supper. People often want to call the afternoon version a “high tea,” meaning fancy; but, in fact, “high tea” is not fancy. It is a workingman’s supper taken at about five o’clock. This served as their final meal of the day. For others, it was a small light meal that filled the gap between dinner (served at noon) and a late supper at eight or nine o’clock. The Cosmopolitan Cook and Recipe Book of 1888 stated that afternoon tea time was supposed to be “charming, when contrasted with the anxieties, formality and etiquette of the dinner table.” A hostess might issue invitations to half a dozen friends and stipulate a two hour time slot for afternoon tea. 79

One regular crime committed in the Victorian era was the abduction of children for their clothes. Well-dressed youth would be captured, stripped, and left running home in their underwear. This was one of the reasons chaperones were often employed.

Dark tales

The Victorian period gave us such great works of terror as Dracula, and the Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. Even the Americans got in on the act with Edgar Allen Poe producing some of the greatest Gothic literature of the time. The Victorians knew how to frighten people and they knew how to do it in grand style. These works still form the basis of much modern horror and their power to thrill has not dwindled in the least. 81

Bucket Brigade was establishedin 2017 by twin brothers, Karl and Kurt Hughes, firefighters from Cape May County, NJ. They serve up quality, handcrafted ales, pilsners, and lagers in a fun, exciting place located just minutes off Stone Harbor Boulevard and the Garden State Parkway at Exit 10. This fire service-themed venue pays homage to all public service and military members in a comfortable tasting room surrounded by memorabilia. You can also purchase growlers to go.
