COLLECTING HISTORY: Personal Collections of Cape May’s African American Community Jan. 19 - April 14, 2019

Collecting is a lifelong passion for many individuals who hunt, preserve, and curate items of importance and interest. It’s not just the object that holds curiosity, but the story it has to tell. Never before seen personal collections of dolls, stamps, postcards, hats, books, art and pocket watches will be exhibited along with John Nash’s collection. Mr. Nash was a beloved community historian whose dedication to collecting Cape May’s African American history formed the basis for Center for Community Arts’ Nash African American History Archives.

The Victorians ate virtually every part of an animal. This is not entirely creepy if you are a food fanatic but for most people, the idea of supping on a bowl of brains and heart is not appealing. Another famous dish from the Victorian era was turtle soup. The turtle was prized above all for its green jelly-like fat which was used to flavor the soup made from the long-boiled stringy flesh of the animal. 20

In a time when one in four patients died after surgery, you were very lucky in Victorian times to have a good doctor with a clean operating theatre. There was no anesthesia, no painkillers for after, and no electric equipment to reduce the duration of an operation. Victorian surgery wasn’t just creepy, it was outright horrific. 56

Say cheese

In the Victorian era, photography was young and extremely costly. When a loved one died, their relatives would sometimes have a photograph taken of the corpse in a pose – oftentimes with other members of the family. For the vast majority of Victorians, this was the only time they would be photographed. In these post-mortem photographs, the effect of life was sometimes enhanced by either propping the subject’s eyes open or painting pupils onto the photographic print, and many early images have a rosy tint added to the cheeks of the corpse. Adults were more commonly posed in chairs or even braced on specially-designed frames.

Hope you like dogs!

Among the unique spirits reported at the Physick Estate by psychic medium Craig McManus are several of Dr. Physick’s dogs. They have been seen the house and one romping through the gardens. Apparently, there is some disturbance when the dogs are about, because they were never allowed in the house by Mrs. Ralston. Aunt Emilie, however, had a softer spot for Dr. Physick’s canine companions, and prepared their dinners in the estate’s kitchen, and would let them in the house when Mrs. Ralston was absent. 66

Down the aisle

The accepted career for women in the Victorian era was marriage. To get ready for courtship and marriage a girl was groomed like a racehorse. In addition to being able to sing, play an instrument and speak a little French or Italian, the qualities a young Victorian gentlewoman needed were to be innocent, virtuous, biddable, dutiful and be ignorant of intellectual opinion. Yeah, right. 73

So many women’s activities of the mid and late 19th century served to show that they were middle class. Making artificial flowers was one of these. Both time-consuming and useless, making artificial flowers proved that your husband’s income made it possible for you to do no housework. Along with disabling clothing and countless crafts, flower-making was a visible sign of middle-class-ness. The conventions of the time made women almost literally prisoners in their parlors.

Hitting the gym

Like today, many a Victorian man or woman thought working out and trying to get the perfect body would make life lovely. Victorians were often obsessive about health, fitness and beauty — the ones who could afford to spend many hours bodybuilding did so. This would also include many new dietary fads and exercise routines that would come and go just as they do these days. The idea was to eventually achieve the “Grecian ideal,” the perfect physique. 75

Bucket brigade

The Cape May Lighthouse was originally staffed by keepers who worked for the U.S. Lighthouse Service. Cape May’s lighthouse generally had one head keeper and two assistants. They carried oil to the top of the tower every day to power the light, and kept the lens apparatus clean and in working order. Keepers’ pay averaged $600 a year around the turn of the 20th century.

Dark tales

The Victorian period gave us such great works of terror as Dracula, and the Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. Even the Americans got in on the act with Edgar Allen Poe producing some of the greatest Gothic literature of the time. The Victorians knew how to frighten people and they knew how to do it in grand style. These works still form the basis of much modern horror and their power to thrill has not dwindled in the least. 81

In a city once ravaged by fire, one of the duties of the building inspector in Cape May during the 1890s was to see to it that every owner or occupant of a house had their chimney swept during the month of May each and every year, under penalty of a $5 to $50 fine. 82

Jan. 23: Lessons from the Mexican-American War

As a result of America’s quick and overwhelming victory in its war with Mexico from 1846-1848 which resulted in our annexation of Texas, America also gained California and the entire Southwest. Feb. 6: Lessons from the Philippine-American War

America engaged in a long, unpopular guerilla war in a jungle in Southeast Asia 50 years before Vietnam when it sought to pacify the Filipinos and show them the benefits of being an American territory. This PowerPoint presentation reviews both this war and the lessons to be learned then and now from it. Presenter: Dr. Robert Heinly

Feb. 13: The Sinking of the Titanic…and Victorian Hubris

The sinking of the Titanic was extremely traumatic to the Victorians, far beyond the loss of prominent lives involved in it. This PowerPoint presentation explores the many impacts of this event on Victorian thinking and culture. Presenter: Dr. Robert Heinly
