Just in time, there’s PRESIDENTS’ WEEKEND Feb. 17-20 in Cape May, NJ, America’s first seaside resort. This is already your favorite place to visit every other time of the year, so why not let us help you cure those winter blues?

See what Dr. Physick and his family did to stay warm with a visit to the EMLEN PHYSICK ESTATE, 1048 Washington St., Cape May’s only Victorian house museum. A guided tour of the meticulously-restored rooms of this 1879 home, designed by Frank Furness in the unique Stick style, will take you back in time to Cape May’s Victorian past (see page 5). LAND TROLLEY TOUR, Feb. 18 at 11am. This 45-minute guided tour tells you about the whalers and farmers who built a different sort of community than what you see in the town’s Victorian area. You’ll also learn about the Black residents who thrived and the diverse community that continues to contribute to the vibrant island life we know and love today. (see page 43)

Get a winter warm-up and work off some of those leftover holiday calories by climbing the 1859 CAPE MAY LIGHTHOUSE. 199 steps will take you to the top for a breathtaking view of the Jersey Cape. Don’t worry...there are landings as you climb the spiral staircase with informational panels (and a chance to catch your breath!) The Lighthouse is open from 11am-2pm, Feb. 18-20. (See page 6).

Learn about Cape May’s spirited residents on a GHOSTS OF CAPE MAY TROLLEY TOUR, offered Friday through Sunday, Feb. 17-19 at 7pm & 8pm. Craig McManus, paranormal investigator and psychic medium, has conducted numerous paranormal investigations throughout the City of Cape May and this 30-minute evening ride through the gas-lit streets of Cape May features a Cape May MAC guide who relates McManus’ findings. Be sure to visit the Carriage House at the Physick Estate, too, where you’ll find the CARRIAGE HOUSE MUSEUM SHOP (see pages 84-85) with some unique treasures for giving (or keeping!) as well as the current exhibit in the CARROLL GALLERY, “Throw Like a Girl: Women in Baseball.” Breathe in the joy of America’s pastime and learn how women not only participated but could excel at the

In between your tours, Cape May MAC offers some free activities the whole family can enjoy. Get to the grounds of the Physick Estate early before your tour, and try the PHYSICK ESTATE SCAVENGER HUNT, a free activity in which the whole family can participate which will introduce you to the grounds and buildings of the estate. While you’re visiting the grounds, note that each building has a descriptive plaque which details its use during Dr. Physick’s life at home. Child labor was common in Victorian England, largely because poor families didn’t earn enough for food without it. One job that had a high demand for children was work in the coal mines. A child’s small size could maneuver in tight spaces, and they required far less pay than adult workers. Kids would work for 12 to 18 hours in air saturated with coal dust, and there was constant danger. Other jobs included chimney sweeping (where children could start working as young as 3) and working in factories or textile mills.

Street vendors of the Victorian age sold some, well, unusual foods. One popular delicacy was sheep’s feet, which were sold hot or cold. People in Victorian England called them “trotters” and purchased them at low prices from slaughterhouses. Vendors would buy them and prepare them at home by skinning and parboiling them, before selling them to workers in the street. Customers would then suck the meat and fat off the bones. Yummy.

Located at the Ocean Street end of the Washington Street Mall, the Information Booth sells tickets for any of our tours and events and provides answers to any questions you might have about what to do in Cape May. The trolley stop for our tours is located across the street from the Information Booth.

CARRIAGE HOUSE VISITORS CENTER

Located in the 1876 Carriage House on the grounds of the Emlen Physick Estate, 1048 Washington St. You may purchase tickets here for any tours or events. Free parking is available on the grounds of the Emlen Physick Estate. The Carriage House is also home to the Carriage House Museum Shop, the Carroll Gallery and Vintage restaurant. The Carriage House is fully accessible.

Located on the grounds of the Emlen Physick Estate, 1048 Washington St., Hill House is home to Cape May MAC’s business ofﬁce. By 1860, England’s Thames River was full of the raw fecal matter and sewage that was being dumped into the water on a daily basis. Since the river was also the main source of drinking water for the city, people died by the thousands from dysentery, cholera, and typhoid. Once again, a great excuse to opt for beer.

Victorian fashion was sometimes a matter of life and death. The airy fabrics of full-skirted 19th-century gowns were incredibly flammable. Oscar Wilde’s half-sisters died after a Halloween party when candlesticks set their gowns on fire. And they weren’t the only ones to suffer this painful fate. At one point, it was estimated that 3,000 women died in crinoline-related fires.
