This Old House PRESERVATION OF THE PHYSICK ESTATE Each year, our tour of the Physick House Museum highlights a particular aspect of Victorian life and culture. 2020 marked Cape May MAC’s 50th Anniversary, and our tours will focus on the Physick House itself. It is fitting, since this is where Cape May MAC began, in its efforts to save the house from the wrecking ball. You will learn of the mansion’s years as a grand residence for the Physick family, to its tragic decline and near demolition and, finally, to its rise as a fully-restored historic landmark. Come join us to learn the compelling story of its life.

FEB. 18-21

PRESIDENTS’ WEEKEND

No matter what your age, nothing feels quite as long as that stretch of time from January 1 to April 1, the three long months of winter. This is the time when “cabin fever” strikes, and you just have to get out of the house! Just in time, there’s PRESIDENTS’ WEEKEND Feb. 18-21 in Cape May, NJ, America’s first seaside resort. This is already your favorite place to visit every other time of the year, so why not let us help you cure those winter blues? See what Dr. Physick and his family did to stay warm with a visit to the EMLEN PHYSICK ESTATE, 1048 Washington St., Cape May’s only Victorian house museum. A guided tour of the meticulously-restored rooms of this 1879 home, designed by Frank Furness in the unique Stick style, will take you back in time to Cape May’s Victorian past (see page 7). You can also add a tour of Cape May’s Historic District with the COMBINATION TROLLEY/PHYSICK ESTATE TOUR and immerse yourself in the total Cape May experience (see page 40). The guided HISTORIC DISTRICT TROLLEY is also available separately. Be sure to bundle up, because trolley tours are still open-air to meet COVID-19 requirements. Get a winter warm-up and work off some of those leftover holiday calories by climbing the 1859 CAPE MAY LIGHTHOUSE. 199 steps will take you to the top for a breathtaking view of the Jersey Cape. Don’t worry...there are landings as you climb the spiral staircase with informational panels (and a chance to catch your breath!) The Lighthouse and the adjacent Museum Shop

are open from 12Noon-3pm, Feb. 1821. (See page 6). Shopping is always a good cure for the doldrums, and our CRAFTS & COLLECTIBLES IN WINTER brings together some of the region’s top crafters and vendors for your browsing pleasure. The show is Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 19 & 20 from 10am-4pm at Cape May Convention Hall, 714 Beach Ave. (See page 22). Learn about Cape May’s spirited residents on a GHOSTS OF CAPE MAY TROLLEY TOUR, offered Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 19 & 20 at 7pm & 8pm. Craig McManus, paranormal investigator and psychic medium, has conducted numerous paranormal investigations throughout the City of Cape May and this 30-minute evening ride through the gas-lit streets of Cape May features a Cape May MAC guide who relates McManus’ findings. (see page 28). Be sure to visit the Carriage House at the Physick Estate, too, where you’ll find the CARRIAGE HOUSE MUSEUM SHOP (see page 84-85) with some unique treasures for giving (or keeping!) as well as the current exhibit in the CARROLL GALLERY, “A Diamond of Their Own,” which tells the remarkable story of the Negro Leagues as portrayed by artist Sydnei SmithJordan with supporting materials from Cape May’s Center for Community Arts. (see page 8).

For more information about purchasing tickets for Presidents’ Weekend events, call 609-884-5404 or visit

www.capemaymac.org

To ensure the safety of visitors and staff, masks are required on all tours of the Physick Estate, on all trolley tours and at the Lighthouse Museum Shop and the Carriage House. Trolley tours are open-air. For details, see Page 5 before purchasing tickets. 9

Keep your horse at home

What was life like in the 1890s? For one thing, there were strict rules governing bathing attire. An 1897 ordinance threatened fines or jail time to those who dared to venture on the beach between the hours of 4 a.m. and 11 p.m. without proper attire. The same ordinance forbade taking a horse or mule into the water during certain times. The ordinance did say, however, that “buff bathing” was allowed on a certain section of beach up until 6 a.m. 16

The accepted career for women in the Victorian era was marriage. To get ready for courtship and marriage a girl was groomed like a racehorse. In addition to being able to sing, play an instrument and speak a little French or Italian, the qualities a young Victorian gentlewoman needed were to be innocent, virtuous, biddable, dutiful and be ignorant of intellectual opinion. Yeah, right.

When Queen Victoria lost her husband Albert in 1861, the Queen went into immediate mourning, and wore black for the next 40 years until her death. During this extended mourning period, she generally lived in seclusion and didn’t attend public events, earning herself the nickname the “Widow of Windsor.” Ironically, Victoria disliked black at funerals, and ensured that the streets of London were decorated in purple and white when she died.

It wasn’t just Queen Victoria mourning her husband—mourning was a serious business in the Victorian Era. Beautiful, elaborate mourning jewelry would be created for women in mourning, which would incorporate onyx or jet (both black stones) and braided hair from the deceased. Tears cried for the deceased would be collected in bottles, and if you were a bachelor who didn’t leave a widow behind, you could always hire a local blonde woman to wail at your grave and make it seem like you were adored.

Swooning Susan

Fainting was common among Victorian women. Corsets made from whalebone, and sometimes even iron or steel, helped women achieve the impossibly tiny waists that were fashionable at the time. A side effect of these binding garments was that circulation would be cut off, and women would have trouble breathing. It was thought that women were prone to fainting from excitement, but really, it was that they would momentarily pass out whenever their heart rates increased as a result of having their midsections bound so tightly.

It was the Victorians who first invented afternoon tea. This was because the evening meal was eaten later than in previous periods and people found they needed a light meal in the late afternoon. The evening meal was eaten around 8 or even 9 p.m. 31

In the Victorian era, collecting was a major part of people’s lives. Collections often included “curiosities” such as zoological, botanical or geological finds. Shrunken heads, seashells, antique weapons and clockworks were commonly collected items. These collections would be displayed in a large “cabinet of curiosities.” If you wanted to expand your collection? Just go to the curiosity shop. 32

Hot games

Parlor games were extremely popular with Victorians, especially at Christmastime. One game was called “Snapdragon,” during which a bunch of raisins were put into a bowl with rum and set on fire. The object of the game was to get the raisins out of the bowl and eat them while they were still on fire. Some games from that era which were simpler and safer are still played today, like charades, and an early version of musical chairs. 39

Busy hands

So many women’s activities of the mid and late 19th century served to show that they were middle class. Making artificial flowers was one of these. Both time-consuming and useless, making artificial flowers proved that your husband’s income made it possible for you to do no housework. Along with disabling clothing and countless crafts, flower-making was a visible sign of middle-class-ness. The conventions of the time made women almost literally prisoners in their parlors.

Boys and girls

In the Victorian era, all genders of children would be clothed in frilly white dresses until they reached school age. And the richer a family was, the more bells and whistles (a.k.a. ribbons, bows, lace and buttons) the dresses would have. Both genders would also wear bonnets. 43

Hands off my hat

One regular crime committed in the Victorian era was the abduction of children for their clothes. Well-dressed youth would be captured, stripped, and left running home in their underwear. This was one of the reasons chaperones were often employed.

• Queen Victoria was a prolific writer, writing about 2,500 words every day during her adult life. Although some of her diaries were accidentally destroyed, many of these 122 volumes survive to this day. • Victoria did not like smoking and had ‘no smoking’ signs placed in almost all the rooms in the palace. She also did not like using the newlyinvented telephone. • She enjoyed looking at art and was quite a talented artist herself. On several birthdays and anniversaries, she gave her husband a painting depicting nude, or near-nude women. • Queen Victoria was devastated when her husband died in December, 1861. From that day on, she wore only black and was in a permanent state of mourning. During her reign, there were at least seven attempts to kill her. Several of the would-be assassins were sent to a mental asylum and were declared insane. • Although she treated her staff well, she did not care for Prime Minister Gladstone. Often, she would remain standing so that he had to stand too, despite the fact that he was in his 80s. 52

GHOSTS

IN VICTORIAN CAPE MAY Cape May is reputedly one of America’s most haunted towns, and nowhere else is this reputation so well-earned as at the 1879 Emlen Physick Estate, Cape May’s original haunted house. For years, MAC’s staffers had felt they were not alone in the house, but it was not until psychic medium Craig McManus began his investigations into the town’s paranormal activities that those who were not regular members of the MAC staff were identified. McManus, who has written several books about Cape May’s hauntings and has documented spirit activity at dozens of the town’s quaint B&B inns and hotel properties, has spent a great deal of time at the Physick house and has identified several of its residents. Most prominent among them is Dr. Physick’s Aunt Emilie, who has great energy and a vibrant smile, according to McManus. “This is a ghost who knows everything that is going on in her home,” McManus wrote. He also explained that, after her death, Emilie had stayed on to watch over the house, which had fallen into disrepair before its restoration began in 1970. Dr. Physick’s mother, Frances Ralston, is no longer in the house, according to McManus, but the strong presence she exerted in her lifetime is still felt as “residual energy,” especially in her bedroom on the second floor, the paranormal hot spot of the home. Another resident is Isabelle, or Bella, Mrs. Ralston’s invalid younger sister who died in 1883, shortly after the family

moved into the mansion. Among the unique spirits that McManus has reported are several of Dr. Physick’s dogs. He encountered several in the house on his first visit, and one romping through the gardens on a later visit. Apparently, there is some disturbance when the dogs are about, because they were never allowed in the house by Mrs. Ralston. Aunt Emilie, however, had a softer spot for Dr. Physick’s canine companions, and prepared their dinners in the estate’s kitchen, and would let them in the house when Mrs. Ralston was absent. The estate’s Carriage House also has its resident spirit, which has been heard by several of the MAC staff whose offices are on the building’s second floor. McManus said this could be one of the servants, possibly a groomsman or driver. One of MAC’s most popular ghost tours is Seance at the Physick Estate, where McManus leads a group of 25 people through the house to commune with its spirit residents. “Cape May’s original haunted house never disappoints,” McManus wrote about a recent tour. “It was one of the best haunting experiences I have had in my career! “There are very few real haunted mansions of this caliber that are open to the public,” he wrote in his book. “If you love the paranormal, this is a must visit!”
