THIS WEEK inCAPE MAY

From the Director

Vol. XLVIII Number 13 Jan. 8-Mar. 25, 2021

We hope you and yours had a happy, healthy holiday season. Now that the new year is upon us, hopes are high that the pandemic will soon be under control and, with any luck, the world will soon be back on its axis. Cape May MAC made it through its 50th Anniversary year in 2020 with its head above water, although barely. Thanks go to all our generous donors, members and patrons who helped us consistently throughout the year. For much of 2020, Cape May MAC provided the only source of activities for many visitors, as well as for locals. We kept the Cape May Lighthouse, Physick House Museum, World War II Lookout Tower and trolley tours going, while not only meeting but, in most cases, surpassing the required COVID-19 safety requirements. We reinstituted walking tours for all seasons and partnered with others to introduce new programming, including new fall and holiday Physick Museum murder mysteries, and outdoor summer and fall jazz concerts on our Physick Estate grounds. We presented a hybrid of both live and virtual performances of the 2020 Cape May Music Festival Concert Series and went virtual with our Museum Education programming that continued to offer our popular Lunch & Learn series. Credit goes to our entire Cape May MAC staff for their ingenuity, versatility and persistence. I inherited a great group. As 2021 unfolds, Cape May MAC is committed to providing as much museum, arts and cultural programming as our resources and conditions permit. While much remains uncertain, we are ready to continue to offer a host of activities that will stimulate your mind and spirit, including a continuation of our very professionally-done 50th Anniversary Carroll Gallery exhibit for those who missed it last year. Sounds like a good prescription for what the world needs right now! Cape May MAC will always try to do its part in our little corner of the world. We look forward to your participation as we collectively work hard to return to some semblance of normalcy. Jody Alessandrine, Director/CEO

Also visit the Estate’s Carriage House to see “50 Years of MAC” exhibit in the Carroll Gallery, starting Feb. 13 (see page 10). The first floor of the Physick House Museum is fully accessible.

This Old House PRESERVATION OF THE PHYSICK ESTATE Each year, our tour of the Physick House Museum highlights a particular aspect of Victorian life and culture. 2020 marked Cape May MAC’s 50th Anniversary, and our tours will focus on the Physick House itself. It is fitting, since this is where Cape May MAC began, in its efforts to save the house from the wrecking ball. You will learn of the mansion’s years as a grand residence for the Physick family, to its tragic decline and near demolition and, finally, to its rise as a fully-restored historic landmark. Come join us to learn the compelling story of its life.

50 Years of

MAC

The 50-year journey of the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts & Humanities (MAC) began in 1970 when a small group of dedicated neighbors joined together to save the 1879 Emlen Physick Estate from the wrecker’s ball. Over the years, the organization’s efforts have continued, restoring and opening both the Cape May Lighthouse and the World War II Lookout Tower. Those years also included thousands of special events and tours, all of which contributed to make Cape May MAC Cape May’s leader in heritage tourism, educational outreach, historic preservation and cultural enrichment.

Join us as we remember those 50 years in words and photos at our

Poison me!

In the Victorian era, arsenic wasn’t regarded as a poison in the same way it is today. Women would apply it topically as an agefighting cosmetic, and men would take arsenic pills to get their engines revving. It took many cases of illness and quite a few fatalities before they figured out that arsenic was toxic. 32

In the interest of safety and compliance with COVID-19 precautions, all Cape May MAC trolley tours this winter are open-air. Riders are encouraged to dress warmly, but here’s a way to add another layer of toasty warmth, with a stylish Cape May MAC blanket. In addition to keeping you warm on the trolley, they’re also great for outdoor dining, roasting chestnuts on an open fire, or just snuggling in front of the fireplace at home. 50” by 60” forest green 9 oz. fleece blankets are a cotton/polyester blend and are machine washable and dryable. $

Working in the coal mines

Working children were common in the Victorian era in England, largely because poor families didn’t earn enough for food without it. One job that had high demand for children was work in the coal mines. Children made excellent coal miners because they could maneuver in tight spaces, and they required far less pay than adult workers. The children would work for 12 to 18 hours in air saturated with coal dust, and there was constant danger. Other jobs included chimney sweeping (where children could start working as young as 3) and working in factories or textile mills. In 1891, the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children was formed, offering some protection to child laborers. 42

Bottling tears

It wasn’t just Queen Victoria mourning her husband—mourning was a serious business in the Victorian Era. Beautiful, elaborate mourning jewelry would be created for women in mourning, which would incorporate onyx or jet (both black stones) and braided hair from the deceased. Tears cried for the deceased would be collected in bottles, and if you were a bachelor who didn’t leave a widow behind, you could always hire a local blonde woman to wail at your grave and make it seem like you were adored. 53

GREATER CAPE MAY HISTORICAL SOCIETY

COLONIAL

HOUSE Museum

A hidden treasure in the heart of Cape May City Located next to Cape May City Hall, the Colonial House (c 1730), was originally a tavern and the family home of Revolutionary War Patriot Memucan Hughes. The front room features a tavern room. Other rooms open to the public in this unsung survivor from Cape Island’s very beginning depict a colonial era cooking/eating room. A fine example of vernacular architecture and colonial living back in the days.

The Colonial House is currently closed Visit our website and Like us on Facebook: Greater Cape May Historical Society

LIFE-SAVING BOAT ON DISPLAY AT THE

CAPE MAY LIGHTHOUSE

215 Lighthouse Ave. off Sunset Boulevard Cape May Point State Park SEE PG. 8 SEE CALENDAR FOR LIGHTHOUSE HOURS

This boat helps to illuminate life-saving history at the Jersey Shore and is an integral part of U.S. Lifesaving Service and U.S. Coast Guard history. Circa late 1800s-1930s, the Monomoys are 26 feet long and most weigh more than 2,000 lbs. The design developed from boats used to hunt whales. Come learn more at your next Lighthouse visit! The boat is a restoration project of the Cape May Maritime and Educational Center and will be on long-term display here, in association with Cape May MAC

Swooning Susan

Fainting was common among Victorian women. Corsets made from whalebone, and sometimes even iron or steel, helped women achieve the impossibly tiny waists that were fashionable at the time. A side effect of these binding garments was that circulation would be cut off, and women would have trouble breathing. It was thought that women were prone to fainting from excitement, but really, it was that they would momentarily pass out whenever their heart rates increased as a result of having their midsections bound so tightly.

Keepers of the Light For the first 77 years of its existence, Cape May’s lighthouse was looked after by a Head Keeper, First Assistant Keeper and Second Assistant Keeper. It was their job to light the lantern each night at sunset, ensure it remained lit throughout the night and extinguish it the following morning. In addition, they were tasked by the United States Lighthouse Service with keeping the tower and Keeper’s dwellings painted and properly maintained, storing the massive amounts of oil and other equipment used in the original lanterns, taking care of the expansive lighthouse property and meticulously cleaning the lantern each day. Routine inspections were held by the Lighthouse Service and any deficiency was immediately addressed. William C. Gregory was the first Head Keeper, aided by assistants Samuel Stilwell and John Reeves. Gregory had been the sole keeper of the previous Cape May lighthouse, which was replaced after just 12 years in service. Following his retirement in 1861, he was succeeded as Head Keeper by

Downes E. Foster, Samuel Stillwell, Caleb S. Woolsen, and finally, Harry H. Palmer. The lantern was automated in 1936, making the Keeper and Assistant Keeper positions no longer necessary. Two homes were built just south of the lighthouse in 1860, one for the Head Keeper and the other for his assistants. It proved to be cramped quarters for the two assistants and their families, leading to requests for additional quarters in 1879 and 1896. They finally got their wish when a long-awaited addition was added to the assistant’s home in 1903. Despite retiring and being given his pension following the light’s automation, Palmer chose to stay in the Keeper’s house and maintain the property for the Lighthouse Service. He, his wife and two daughters lived comfortably there for many years. Today, the site is looked after by MAC staff members, one of whom is Palmer’s own granddaughter, Mayhugh Palmer Tees. -- Story by Ben Miller

Trolley service was available between the city of Cape May and the Cape’s original steamboat landing at what is now Sunset Beach, with the lighthouse as one of the most popular landmarks along the route. It would later be extended to Sewell Point, where today’s Coast Guard base is, then abandoned, after storm surges destroyed the tracks. Photo courtesy Cape May Point State Park
