The Stick Style architecture of the Emlen Physick Estate is characterized by wood construction with boxy projections, such as bays, wings and towers, a grid work of raised boards, called stick work, overlaying the clapboarded walls, and simple decorative elements, often geometric in design. These elements are in marked contrast with the ornate gingerbread trim found on many other Cape May houses. 16

20 Years of History: Cape May’s Center for Community Arts
January 17-April 12, 2014
2015 marks the 20th anniversary of the Center for Community Arts (CCA) and its 15th collaboration with MAC for annual exhibits of African-American life and history in Cape May. This year, CCA’s Community History Project annual exhibit celebrates these anniversaries with photographs and objects that tell the stories of CCA’s programs and people - - 20 years of exhibits; art and music; the John and Janet Nash African-American History Archive and walking tours; the rehabilitation of the once-segregated Franklin Street School; children’s arts and culture programs throughout the lower Cape; adult arts programs; and, its community radio station, WCFA 101.5 FM - - all created and developed by CCA’s pioneer founding mothers and the volunteers that have followed them.

You go, girl!
The status of women in the Victorian era is often seen as an illustration of the striking discrepancy between national power and wealth and what many, then and now, consider appalling social conditions. During the era symbolized by the reign of British monarch Queen Victoria, women did not have suffrage rights, the right to sue, or the right to own property. At the
same time, women participated in the paid workforce in increasing numbers following the Industrial Revolution. Feminist ideas spread among the educated female middle classes, discriminatory laws were repealed, and the women’s suffrage movement gained momentum in the last years of the Victorian Era.

Light your bike
Cape May was always popular for bicycle riders, and an 1897 ordinance wanted to ensure that everyone saw them. It stipulated that any bicycles, tricycles or similar vehicles needed to be equipped with lamps capable of illumination visible one hundred yards ahead.

A new look for Cape May The Physick House made news in Cape May in 1879 because it was different from any other house in town. It was constructed in the avant garde Stick Style, while most cottages in town were still being built in the more conservative Italianate, Gothic and Mansard styles. 48

Sweep that soot!
In a city once ravaged by fire, one of the duties of the building inspector in Cape May during the 1890s was to see to it that every owner or occupant of a house had their chimney swept during the month of May each and every year, under penalty of a $5 to $50 fine. 50

The Cape May Lighthouse actually has two separate walls. The outside wall is cone-shaped, and is 3 feet 10 inches thick at the bottom, and 1 foot 6 inches thick at the top. The inside wall is a cylinder with 8.5-inch thick walls which support the spiral staircase. The walls were designed to withstand winds several times above hurricane force.

The Lighthouse was staffed by keepers who worked for the U.S. Lighthouse Service. Cape May’s lighthouse generally had one head keeper and two assistants. They carried the oil to the top of the tower every day to power the light, and kept the lens apparatus clean and in working order. Keepers’ pay averaged $600 a year around the turn of the 20th century.

What was that tower for? Fire Control Tower No. 23 is New Jersey’s last remaining World War II tower, part of the immense Harbor Defense of the Delaware system known as Fort Miles. Built in 1942, the tower was one of 15 towers that helped aim batteries of coastal artillery. 53

The citizens of Cape May during the 1890s liked their peaceful existence. An ordinance of 1897 stated that no driver, runner or conductor of a coach, omnibus or carriage of any hotel or boarding house was permitted to “halloo, shout or call out” the names of these places upon their arrival of train at the railroad depot.

A new look for Cape May The design of the Physick House, attributed to Frank Furness, made news in Cape May in 1879 because it was different from any other house in town, constructed in the avant garde Stick Style, while most cottages in town were still being built in the more conservative Italianate, Gothic and Mansard styles. While no document exists to prove the Furness attribution, historians concur that he was the only architect who could possibly have designed the Physick House. Such trademark features as the greatly oversized corbelled (upside down) chimneys, jerkinhead dormers, and porch brackets appear in many other Furness buildings of the period.

The Cape May Lighthouse is still a working beacon. The Coast Guard continues to operate the light as an active aid to navigation. The light is visible 24 miles out at sea and flashes every 15 seconds. A lighthouse’s flash pattern is called its “characteristic;” every lighthouse has its own light characteristic and exterior paint scheme (called a daymark) so that ship captains can tell them apart. 60

Feb. 4: Victorian Valentines: Courtship and Marriage (Mary Stewart)
Was courtship a career move? A romantic attachment? Or could it be both? The young men and women of the Victorian era took courting very seriously, as this Powerpoint presentation will show.
Feb.11: Historical Perspectives on the Presidency (Bob Heinly)
Modern folks are used to a powerful president who is both the leader of his/her national government and political party. That’s not the way it has always been. For long periods of our history the president was a steward carrying out the will of a more powerful Congress. We’ll discuss how, why and when the presidency has changed, presidents who have contributed to this change and the merits of this change.
Feb.18: Presidential Armageddons: Elections That Changed History (Bob Heinly)
We’ll focus on presidential election that have changed the course of American history and government including the election of Jefferson in 1800, Jackson in 1828, Lincoln in 1860 and 1864, McKinley in 1896, Wilson in 1912, F. D. Roosevelt in 1932, Ronald Reagan in 1980 and Barack Obama in 2008.
Feb. 25: Top Ten Presidents (Bob Heinly)
Historians, journalists and the general public have often been asked to rate the presidents. We’ll review some of these ratings and the reasons for them, focusing on those presidents considered the best, and why.

March 18: Victorian Women, Part 2: Shedding the Cocoon (Mary Stewart & Wilma Korevaar)
As the Victorian era progressed, women began to shed their cocoons, and participate fully in society. Learn about the forces, movements and dozens of individuals involved in the evolution of Victorian women and their lifestyles.

Busy hands So many women’s activities of the mid and late 19th century served to show that they were middle class. Making artificial flowers was one of these. Both timeconsuming and useless, making artificial flowers proved that your husband’s income made it possible for you to do no housework. Along with disabling clothing and countless crafts, flower-making was a visible sign of middle-class-ness. The conventions of the time made women almost literally prisoners in their parlors.

SPECIAL FRIENDS EVENTS TRIP TO FORGOTTEN WARRIORS MUSEUM Sunday, Feb. 21 (see page 21) Presented by the Friends of the World War II Lookout Tower 85
What’s for dinner? Victorians valued good cooking and food. However, there were great differences between what the rich and poorer people ate. The unemployed, and others with little money, survived on little more than potato parings, rotten vegetable refuse and scraps. Those on a slightly higher wage could occasionally purchase some bacon, cheese or
sausage and workers in better-paid jobs had more choice and more wholesome food. Meal time provided the opportunity for the rich to display their wealth... through rich foods, use of fine cutlery, china and servants. French cuisine was in fashion, with as many as 20 dishes served at the same time in two great courses.
