From the Director

Thankfully, in the last month, Cape May MAC has been able to resume many of its tour offerings, though with significantly limited access due to social distancing and other safety precautions. All of our programming had been completely dormant due to the COVID-19 pandemic since the first weekend in March. We’ve been forced to cancel the first three of our four Physick Estate festivals. All of our Cape May Music Festival Series concerts have been postponed and are now tentatively rescheduled between Sept. 1 and Nov. 21. Under the Governor’s Executive Order #125, we will be able to resume limited open air-only trolley tours shortly, but with seating capacity limited to 35 percent of the norm. The reality remains that while we have reduced staff to either half-pay or furlough status, and even temporarily laid-off others, there is no way we can reduce expenses enough to match the projected revenue losses already incurred. Our anticipated revenue is greatly reduced due to the limitations on the number of guests at any of our sites or on any of our tours, at any given time. So, while we are sincerely grateful for the tremendous generosity displayed to date, we still are in dire need of financial help. Whether it’s a donation to our operations, purchasing a Cape May MAC membership or a tour/event ticket in advance (even as a gift), or making a purchase from our new online gift shop, any of these kind acts would be most appreciated. We’re happy to welcome you back and hope you enjoy your tour of the Physick Estate, a visit to the Cape May Lighthouse or the World War II Lookout Tower, or our new walking tour. In an abundance of caution, Cape May MAC requires that you do the following: • Keep 6 feet apart from anyone not in your party. • Wear a mask at all times while participating in our tours. This Old House PRESERVATION OF THE PHYSICK ESTATE Each year, our tour of the Physick House Museum highlights a particular aspect of Victorian life and culture. This year marks Cape May MAC’s 50th Anniversary, and our tours will focus on the Physick House itself. It is fitting, since this is where Cape May MAC began, in its efforts to save the house from the wrecking ball. You will learn of the mansion’s years as a grand residence for the Physick family, to its tragic decline and near demolition and, finally, to its rise as a fully-restored historic landmark. The state park offers a Hawk Watch platform and nature trails, as well as a museum with live reptiles and nature displays, and there are covered pavilions and access to the beach (swimming is not allowed). You can also see the World War II bunker on the beach. Rest rooms are available in the park and there is ample free parking.

MAC

The 50-year journey of the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts & Humanities (MAC) began in 1970 when a small group of dedicated neighbors joined together to save the 1879 Emlen Physick Estate from the wrecker’s ball. Over the years, the organization’s efforts have continued, restoring and opening both the Cape May Lighthouse and the World War II Lookout Tower. Those years also included thousands of special events and tours, all of which contributed to make Cape May MAC Cape May’s leader in heritage tourism, educational outreach, historic preservation and cultural enrichment.

Bottling tears

It wasn’t just Queen Victoria mourning her husband—mourning was a serious business in the Victorian Era. Beautiful, elaborate mourning jewelry would be created for women in mourning, which would incorporate onyx or jet (both black stones) and braided hair from the deceased. Tears cried for the deceased would be collected in bottles, and if you were a bachelor who didn’t leave a widow behind, you could always hire a local blonde woman to wail at your grave and make it seem like you were adored. 16

Are you going to eat that?

The Victorians ate virtually every part of an animal. This is not entirely creepy if you are a food fanatic but for most people, the idea of supping on a bowl of brains and heart is not appealing. Another famous dish from the Victorian era was turtle soup. The turtle was prized above all for its green jelly-like fat which was used to flavor the soup made from the long-boiled stringy flesh of the animal. 18

This would also include many new dietary fads and exercise routines that would come and go just as they do these days. Busy hands

So many women’s activities of the mid and late 19th century served to show that they were middle class. Making artificial flowers was one of these. Both time-consuming and useless, making artificial flowers proved that your husband’s income made it possible for you to do no housework. Along with disabling clothing and countless crafts, flower-making was a visible sign of middle-class-ness. The conventions of the time made women almost literally prisoners in their parlors. 28

Lighthouse Avenue off Sunset Boulevard Cape May Point State Park OPEN DAILY 10AM-4PM SEE PG. 8 This boat helps to illuminate life-saving history at the Jersey Shore and is an integral part of U.S. Lifesaving Service and U.S. Coast Guard history. Circa late 1800s-1930s, the Monomoys are 26 feet long with a 7-foot beam and most weigh over 2,000 lbs. It was rowed by eight rowers in four pairs and each rower handles a single 12-foot wooden oar. The oars range in weight from 11 to 15 lbs. A coxswain stands in the stern and steers with a 16-foot oar. The design developed from boats used to hunt whales.

The boat is a restoration project of the Cape May Maritime and Educational Center and will be on long-term display here, in association with Cape May MAC 29

Dr. Physick and a canine friend go for a ride in their 1915 Model T Runabout

DR. PHYSICKâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;S MODEL T

Dr. Physick owned a number of vehicles including a 1915 Model T Ford Runabout. As you can see from the photo, Dr. Physick had the car converted to a pickup truck. This was easily accomplished by removing the rear turtle deck, the section of the car that contained the trunk, and putting on a truck bed instead. A forward-thinking individual, Dr. Physick is said to have owned the first automobile in town. His mother, Mrs. Ralston, was not fond of the new invention and insisted that there always be a carriage in the Carriage House for her use.
