Tats strange
In Victorian times, it was common for the nobility and aristocracy to have multiple pieces of artwork tattooed on their bodies. It all started when Queen Victoria’s son, the Prince of Wales, was visiting Jerusalem. He saw someone getting a tattoo and decided to get one of his own. He started a huge trend, and some estimates say that almost 100,000 Londoners got tattoos after news spread about his new tattoo when he returned home. 15

Curious collections
In the Victorian era, collecting was a major part of people’s lives. Collections often included “curiosities” such as zoological, botanical or geological finds. Shrunken heads, seashells, antique weapons and clockworks were commonly collected items. These collections would be displayed in a large “cabinet of curiosities.” If you wanted to expand your collection? Just go to the curiosity shop. 26

Working in the coal mines
Working children were common in the Victorian era in England, largely because poor families didn’t earn enough for food without it. One job that had high demand for children was work in the coal mines. Children made excellent coal miners because they could maneuver in tight spaces, and they required far less pay than adult workers. The children would work for 12 to 18 hours in air saturated with coal dust, and there was constant danger. Other jobs included chimney sweeping (where children could start working as young as 3) and working in factories or textile mills. In 1891, the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children was formed, offering some protection to child laborers. 27

Dine indoors in the air-conditioned horse stalls. Enjoy a traditional Tea Luncheon or heartier fare from the cafe menu, as well as an afternoon tea, or a bottle of wine from Cape May Winery. -- See page 81 GHOSTS ARE COOL...and Cape May is one of the most haunted places you’ll ever visit. After the sun goes down, you’ll hear all about them around town, at the Physick Estate and the Cape May Lighthouse, as well as the historic (and haunted) Cherry House. -- See pages 45, 53 COOL AT THE TOP. You may warm up as you climb the 199 steps to the top of the Cape May Lighthouse, but it’s worth it for the cool breezes at the top, and the view is the coolest. Also visit the World War II Lookout Tower... not as many steps to the top and still keeps the family out of the sun! -- See pages 8 & 13
MYSTERY IS COOL. It is when it’s a performance of Clueless at the Physick Estate. The action unfolds around you in the rooms of the AIR-CONDITIONED Physick Estate and we haven’t got a clue whodunnit.... (we do, but we’re not telling!) -- See page 23 EVENING TROLLEYS ARE COOL. After the sun goes down, you can see the town in the cool of the evening by hopping on one of MAC’s red trolleys. There are some cool trolley tours and rides that you shouldn’t miss, from ghosts to rides along gaslit streets, and plenty more. -- See evening calendar listings GET WATER COOLED...Board the Cape May Whale Watcher for a cool ride around the Cape. You’ll learn about our maritime history and see dolphins frolicking in the wake as you enjoy the cool ocean breezes. -- See pages 35, 93 HOUSES ARE COOL! Visit The Angel of the Sea, with its beautiful architecture and a really cool story about its history as a “mobile” home. -- See page 44 PICNICS are cool and you’ll find plenty of tables on the shady grounds of the Physick Estate. Get some take-out from the Carriage House Cafe & Tearoom, a bottle of wine from Cape May Winery, and chill out. Take a stroll and learn about the Estate on the Physick Estate Scavenger Hunt. -- See pages 31, 81

The Victorian era was home to some of the most rigid social codes in Western history. This extended to all areas of life. When women would plan to visit their friends and acquaintances, it was referred to as “paying a call,” and could only be done in the afternoon. To pay a call at any other time was an incredible show of bad manners, as was overstaying your welcome. Like an intricate board game, if someone else came to pay a call while you were at someone’s house, you would gracefully exit, lest you be considered rude.

Fitness fanatics
The gym rat is, surprisingly, not a 20th century invention. Victorians really cared about achieving a physical ideal. And, much like the current day, it was often those with the most money who had the most time to spend working on themselves. Bodybuilding was a hobby of the elite, as were fad diets and taking up new exercise trends. Nearly 200 gyms, or fitness centers, proliferated across Europe to meet the demand for physical perfection.

The Iconic Cape May Lighthouse: From the pages of “The First Resort” OPEN DAILY: SEE CALENDAR FOR TIMES FREE ADMISSION
Illuminating the darkness over the Atlantic Ocean and Delaware Bay for 160 years, Cape May’s lighthouse is the third beacon to guide mariners through the tumultuous waters at the confluence of the ocean and bay. Memories and historic images abound in this exhibit curated by Ben Miller, from the keepers who dedicated their lives to maintaining the light, the MAC preservationists who restored it and all those who’ve relied upon it for more than a century and a half. The Victorian era was a great time of invention, including many that we still use today. Guglielmo Marconi came up with the radio in 1895. In 1876, Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone. Other notable inventions included the camera, the television, the vacuum, the train, the stamp, and most importantly: the toilet. 42

Bucket Brigade was establishedin 2017 by twin brothers, Karl and Kurt Hughes, firefighters from Cape May County, NJ. They serve up quality, handcrafted ales, pilsners, and lagers in a fun, exciting place located just minutes off Stone Harbor Boulevard and the Garden State Parkway at Exit 10. This fire service-themed venue pays homage to all public service and military members in a comfortable tasting room surrounded by memorabilia. You can also purchase growlers to go.
