Sweep that soot!

In a city once ravaged by fire, one of the duties of the building inspector in Cape May during the 1890s was to see to it that every owner or occupant of a house had their chimney swept during the month of May each and every year, under penalty of a $5 to $50 fine. 27

No charge to participate, but donations are always welcome. Sponsored by the Friends of the Physick Estate, an affinity group of the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts & Humanities (MAC)

Lighthouse & Lunch at the Red Store Available Daily (See Calendar for Lighthouse Times) Cape May Point State Park Lighthouse Avenue off Sunset Boulevard

We’ve always said that climbing the Cape May Lighthouse (see page 9) was a great way to work up an appetite! Here’s a chance to combine that great exercise (with the reward of a breathtaking view from the top!) with a lunch at Cape May Point’s delightful Red Store. Package includes admission to the Lighthouse, plus a $15 voucher to be used toward lunch (excluding tax & gratuity). There’s plenty of free parking, too, at Cape May Point State Park, and the Red Store is just a short walk through the streets of Cape May Point. $20 per person. Purchase vouchers at the Lighthouse, the Washington Street Mall Information Booth at Ocean Street, the Red Store at 500 Cape Ave., or the Hill House Office at the Physick Estate, 1048 Washington St. For more information, call Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts & Humanities (MAC) at (609) 884-5404 or 800-275-4278 or visit www.capemaymac.org.

Finally! A tour for those who want to know, “How’d they DO that?” Cape May has one of the largest concentrations of 19th century wood frame structures (over 600) in the United States. Look at them from a builder’s perspective (remembering they did all this without nailguns and a saw was their idea of a cordless tool). Learn how things really came together and worked on this one-hour guided trolley tour.

BEAT THE HEAT!

COOL ideas for HOT

summer days!

HISTORY IS COOL! And so is the air-conditioned Emlen Physick Estate. Cape May’s only Victorian house museum is a great way to beat the heat and see what life was like 135 years ago for this Cape May family. Includes a visit to the air-conditioned Carriage House to see the current (hot) exhibit “Cape May Ablaze.” -- See page 6-7, 61

rooms of the air-conditioned Physick Estate and we haven’t got a clue whodunnit.... (we do, but we’re not telling!) -- See page 64 EVENING TROLLEYS ARE COOL. After the sun goes down, you can see the town in the cool of the evening by hopping on one of MAC’s red trolleys. There are some cool trolley tours and rides that you shouldn’t miss, from ghosts to rides along gaslit streets, and plenty more. -- See evening calendar listings

ICED TEA and other refreshments are a great way to cool off, and it’s only one of the things to love about lunch or afternoon tea at the Carriage House Cafe & Tearoom, on the grounds of the Physick Estate. Dine indoors in the air-conditioned horse stalls. Enjoy a traditional Tea Luncheon or heartier fare from the cafe menu, as well as an afternoon tea. -- See page 59

GET WATER COOLED...Board the Cape May Whale Watcher for a cool ride around the Cape. You’ll learn about our maritime history and see dolphins frolicking in the wake as you enjoy the cool ocean breezes. -- See pages 42 & 43

GHOSTS ARE COOL...and Cape May is one of the most haunted places you’ll ever visit. After the sun goes down, you’ll hear all about them around town, at the Physick Estate and Cape May Lighthouse, and at the Cherry House, too. -- See pages 15 & 45

HOUSES ARE COOL! There’s the Angel of the Sea, where you’ll enjoy a cool tour and cool tales of of this famous B&B hotel. And be sure to visit the air-conditioned Cherry House, the only private home in Cape May open for regular tours by the owners. This Federal-style home is an easy walk from the center of town on shady, tree-lined Hughes Street. -- See pages 15 & 21

COOL AT THE TOP. You may warm up as you climb the 199 steps to the top of the Cape May Lighthouse, but it’s worth it for the cool breezes at the top, and the view is the coolest. Also visit the World War II Lookout Tower... not as many steps to the top and still keeps the family out of the sun! -- See pages 8 & 9

Just because it’s a scorcher out there is no reason to miss some of Cape May’s most popular tours and attractions... and you don’t even have to worry about wearing sunscreen!!!

MYSTERY IS COOL. It is when it’s a performance of Clueless at the Physick Estate. The action unfolds around you in the
