From the Director

Cape May MAC has recently been able to resume many of its tour offerings, though with significantly limited access due to social distancing, disinfecting and other safety precautions. All of our programming had been completely dormant due to the COVID-19 pandemic since the first weekend in March. We’ve been forced to cancel the first three of our four Physick Estate festivals. All of our Cape May Music Festival Series concerts have been postponed and are now tentatively rescheduled between Sept. 1 and Nov. 21. The reality remains that while we have reduced staff to either half-pay or furlough status, and even temporarily laid-off others, there is no way we can reduce expenses enough to match the projected revenue losses already incurred. Our anticipated revenue is greatly reduced due to the limitations on the number of guests at any of our sites or on any of our tours, at any given time. So, while we are sincerely grateful for the tremendous generosity displayed to date, we still are in dire need of financial help. Whether it’s a donation to our operations, purchasing a Cape May MAC membership or a tour/event ticket in advance (even as a gift), or making a purchase from our new online gift shop, any of these kind acts would be most appreciated. We’re happy to welcome you back and hope you enjoy your tour of the Physick Estate, a visit to the Cape May Lighthouse or the World War II Lookout Tower, a trolley tour or our new walking tour. In an abundance of caution, Cape May MAC requires that you do the following: • Keep 6 feet apart from anyone not in your party. • Wear a mask at all times while participating in our tours. We will be asking all visitors the following questions upon check-in: • Are you experiencing flu-like symptoms? • Have you been in contact with anyone infected with COVID-19? • Have you traveled to a high-risk area or country? If you have answered “yes” to any of these questions, we respectfully ask that you do not participate at this time, and return after being asymptomatic for 14 days. If a guest’s temperature is 100.4 or more, we require her/him to take a seat in the shade, and retest in 10 minutes; or, come again at another time. We are requiring the same of our Cape May MAC employees & volunteers. To further ensure your safety, all of our historic sites and our trolleys are getting routine deep cleaning with disinfecting products.

This Old House PRESERVATION OF THE PHYSICK ESTATE Each year, our tour of the Physick House Museum highlights a particular aspect of Victorian life and culture. This year marks Cape May MAC’s 50th Anniversary, and our tours will focus on the Physick House itself. It is fitting, since this is where Cape May MAC began, in its efforts to save the house from the wrecking ball. You will learn of the mansion’s years as a grand residence for the Physick family, to its tragic decline and near demolition and, finally, to its rise as a fully-restored historic landmark. The state park offers a Hawk Watch platform and nature trails, as well as a museum with live reptiles and nature displays, and there are covered pavilions and access to the beach (swimming is not allowed). You can also see the World War II bunker on the beach. Rest rooms are available in the park and there is ample free parking.

MAC

The 50-year journey of the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts & Humanities (MAC) began in 1970 when a small group of dedicated neighbors joined together to save the 1879 Emlen Physick Estate from the wrecker’s ball. Over the years, the organization’s efforts have continued, restoring and opening both the Cape May Lighthouse and the World War II Lookout Tower. Those years also included thousands of special events and tours, all of which contributed to make Cape May MAC Cape May’s leader in heritage tourism, educational outreach, historic preservation and cultural enrichment.

Consuming poison

In the Victorian era, arsenic wasn’t regarded as a poison in the same way it is today. Fainting was common among Victorian women. Corsets made from whalebone, and sometimes even iron or steel, helped women achieve the impossibly tiny waists that were fashionable at the time. A side effect of these binding garments was that circulation would be cut off, and women would have trouble breathing. It was thought that women were prone to fainting from excitement, but really, it was that they would momentarily pass out whenever their heart rates increased as a result of having their midsections bound so tightly.

215 Lighthouse Ave. off Sunset Boulevard Cape May Point State Park OPEN DAILY 10AM-4PM SEE PG. 8 This boat helps to illuminate life-saving history at the Jersey Shore and is an integral part of U.S. Lifesaving Service and U.S. Coast Guard history. Circa late 1800s-1930s, the Monomys are 26 feet long with a 7-foot beam and most weigh over 2,000 lbs. It was rowed by eight rowers in four pairs and each rower handled a single 12-foot wooden oar. The oars ranged in weight from 11 to 15 lbs. A coxswain stood in the stern and steered with a 16-foot oar. The design developed from boats used to hunt whales.

The boat is a restoration project of the Cape May Maritime and Educational Center and will be on long-term display here, in association with Cape May MAC 29

Strange sideshows

A common form of entertainment in the Victorian era was the freak show. Fueled by the Victorian interest in physical oddities and the peculiarities of death, touring freak shows were attractive and exotic. The showmen of these shows worked hard to make a name for themselves, and P.T. Barnum was seen as the most successful showman of his time. Paraphernalia from the shows also became popular, and “freak trading cards” were incredibly successful.

Located at the Ocean Street end of the Washington Street Mall, the Information Booth sells tickets for any of our tours and events and provides answers to any questions you might have about what to do in Cape May. There are also dozens of brochures you can pick up for up-coming events. The trolley stop for our tours is located across the street from the Information Booth.

CARRIAGE HOUSE VISITORS CENTER

Located in the 1876 Carriage House on the grounds of the Emlen Physick Estate, 1048 Washington St. You may purchase tickets here for any tours or events. Free parking is available on the grounds of the Emlen Physick Estate. The Carriage House is also home to the Carriage House Museum Shop, the Carroll Gallery and Vintage restaurant. The Carriage House is fully accessible.

HILL HOUSE OFFICE

Located on the grounds of the Emlen Physick Estate, 1048 Washington St., Hill House is home to Cape May MACâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s business office. If you ordered advance tickets, you can pick them up here, as well as purchase tickets here for any tours or events. A hidden treasure in the heart of Cape May City Located next to Cape May City Hall, the Colonial House (c 1730), was originally a tavern and the family home of Revolutionary War Patriot Memucan Hughes. The front room features a tavern room. Other rooms open to the public in this unsung survivor from Cape Islandâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s very beginning depict a colonial era cooking/eating room. A fine example of vernacular architecture and colonial living back in the days.
