Welcome to Cape May MAC! Our Cape May MAC Membership Committee has been taking a closer look at our program and much has been revealed when we note the very reasonable cost to join and the perks received when contributing to our mission. Here’s just some quick background that may make your time with us a bit more an enjoyable and informative. After all, you’re here for this history! Cape May MAC was formed 51 years ago for the sole purpose of saving the Emlen Physick Estate from demolition. Since then, we’ve poured millions of grant dollars into its dramatic restoration and expensive maintenance. Same goes for the once-shuttered historic Cape May Lighthouse that we completely restored and opened to the public in 1988. Almost $2.5 million has been invested in the lighthouse by Cape May MAC. Then there’s the World War II Lookout Tower, for which we assumed responsibility in 2003, yet another extensive restoration success story. People from all over the globe have visited all three — hundreds of thousands annually. These historic sites alone provide a great value for visitors to learn about the Victorian Era, as well as maritime, military and local history. Your patronage helps us help them, and becoming a Cape May MAC member is a true investment in keeping this mission alive for generations to come. There’s no better way to show your love and appreciation for Cape May’s past than to invest in its future. https://capemaymac.org/support/membership.

This Old House PRESERVATION OF THE PHYSICK ESTATE Each year, our tour of the Physick House Museum highlights a particular aspect of Victorian life and culture. In honor of Cape May MAC’s recent 50th anniversary, our tours will focus on the Physick House itself. It is fitting, since this is where Cape May MAC began, in its efforts to save the house from the wrecking ball. You will learn of the mansion’s years as a grand residence for the Physick family, to its tragic decline and near demolition and, finally, to its rise as a fully-restored historic landmark. Come join us to learn the compelling story of its life.

Makeup was considered gauche for a society woman to wear, as it was used mostly by prostitutes. One judge even proclaimed lipstick to be similar to witchcraft, in that it had the ability to seduce men. If you were a society woman, you would probably pinch your cheeks in an attempt to give yourself a glow, and you might use cold cream to appear youthful and dewy. If you felt risqué, you might apply the tiniest amount of rouge to your cheeks. 18

Down the aisle

The accepted career for women in the Victorian era was marriage. To get ready for courtship and marriage a girl was groomed like a racehorse. In addition to being able to sing, play an instrument and speak a little French or Italian, the qualities a young Victorian gentlewoman needed were to be innocent, virtuous, biddable, dutiful and be ignorant of intellectual opinion. Yeah, right. 21

50 Years of

MAC

The 50-year journey of the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts & Humanities (MAC) began in 1970 when a small group of dedicated neighbors joined together to save the 1879 Emlen Physick Estate from the wrecker’s ball. Over the years, the organization’s efforts have continued, restoring and opening both the Cape May Lighthouse and the World War II Lookout Tower. Those years also included thousands of special events and tours, all of which contributed to make Cape May MAC Cape May’s leader in heritage tourism, educational outreach, historic preservation and cultural enrichment.

Join us as we commemorate those 50 years in words and photos at our

Talking to dead people

On top of believing in aliens, Victorians were also strong believers in hypnotism, divination, and spiritualism. Events where attendees could be hypnotized, speak to the dead, or have their futures predicted were extremely popular, and hucksters would make huge money off of gullible Victorians. 27

Don’t drink the water

11:15am

By 1860, England’s Thames River was full of the raw fecal matter and sewage that was being dumped into the water on a daily basis. Since the river was also the main source of drinking water for the city, people died by the thousands from dysentery, cholera, and typhoid. Once again, a great excuse to opt for beer. 28

The Widow of Windsor

When Queen Victoria lost her husband Albert in 1861, the Queen went into immediate mourning, and wore black for the next 40 years until her death. During this extended mourning period, she generally lived in seclusion and didn’t attend public events, earning herself the nickname the “Widow of Windsor.” Ironically, Victoria disliked black at funerals, and ensured that the streets of London were decorated in purple and white when she died. 31

Poison me!

In the Victorian era, arsenic wasn’t regarded as a poison in the same way it is today. Women would apply it topically as an agefighting cosmetic, and men would take arsenic pills to get their engines revving. It took many cases of illness and quite a few fatalities before they figured out that arsenic was toxic. 33

It was the Victorians who first invented afternoon tea. This was because the evening meal was eaten later than in previous periods and people found they needed a light meal in the late afternoon. The evening meal was eaten around 8 or even 9 p.m. 34

Working in the coal mines

Working children were common in the Victorian era in England, largely because poor families didn’t earn enough for food without it. One job that had high demand for children was work in the coal mines. Children made excellent coal miners because they could maneuver in tight spaces, and they required far less pay than adult workers. The children would work for 12 to 18 hours in air saturated with coal dust, and there was constant danger. Other jobs included chimney sweeping (where children could start working as young as 3) and working in factories or textile mills. In 1891, the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children was formed, offering some protection to child laborers. 37

Swooning Susan

Fainting was common among Victorian women. Corsets made from whalebone, and sometimes even iron or steel, helped women achieve the impossibly tiny waists that were fashionable at the time. A side effect of these binding garments was that circulation would be cut off, and women would have trouble breathing. It was thought that women were prone to fainting from excitement, but really, it was that they would momentarily pass out whenever their heart rates increased as a result of having their midsections bound so tightly. 38

Without a Cue Productions presents

And Then They Were Dead AN IMMERSIVE MYSTERY Mondays & Wednesdays: 7pm

Outdoor Stage at the Emlen Physick Estate, 1048 Washington St. Ten strangers are invited to a secluded island, and none of them knows the reason. Shortly after their mysterious party begins, it becomes clear their unknown host has murderous intentions. With no way to contact anyone on the mainland, they must find the killer before they are picked off one by one! If you love a good whodunnit where the lights go out and a shot is heard in the dark, then you’ve just picked your poison...except in this whodunnit, YOU choose the action! Will the cranky butler be the next to die? Or will it be the crafty lawyer? Do our suspects search the kitchen or the study? In this “choose your own adventure” style mystery the audience votes in real time as to what actions the actors take next...and create a new show every evening! Ultimately, you get to vote on who the culprit is, and have the final word of the evening!

Adults $39/Children $30 Please bring lawn chairs or blankets ts online at Order tickemaymac.org www.cape

HOUSE Museum

A hidden treasure in the heart of Cape May City Located next to Cape May City Hall, the Colonial House (c 1730), was originally a tavern and the family home of Revolutionary War Patriot Memucan Hughes. The front room features a tavern room. Other rooms open to the public in this unsung survivor from Cape Island’s very beginning depict a colonial era cooking/eating room. A fine example of vernacular architecture and colonial living back in the days.
