Quackery: Toxic and shocking?

Toxic arsenic was widely consumed by Victorians. Women believed it had qualities which made skin appear younger, and so it was a major ingredient in many cosmetics – whereas men would consume arsenic pills as a way of stimulating their libido. Unsurprisingly, these products caused extreme sickness and lead to many fatalities before people understood the true power of the substance. Also in practice was electrotherapy, or shock therapy, which was used to treat multiple medical problems, including gout, muscle pain, rheumatism (arthritis), and liver problems. What was the complicated, medical and scientific explanation behind this? This so-called “technology” was about as intricate as trying to scare the hiccups out of someone by yelling “Boo!” Essentially, the hope was that applying electricity would shock the problem out of the patient.

The Age of Questionable Medical Marvels

Step right up! See this exhibit of some of the so-called medical marvels of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Many of these “curatives” were not just ineffective, they were downright dangerous. Learn about the societal and economic forces that unleashed these questionable treatments on the public, driven by hucksterism, false advertising and get-rich-quick schemes.

Up in smoke

Victorian fashion was sometimes a matter of life and death. The airy fabrics of full-skirted 19th-century gowns were incredibly flammable. Oscar Wilde’s half-sisters died after a Halloween party when candlesticks set their gowns on fire. And they weren’t the only ones to suffer this painful fate. At one point, it was estimated that 3,000 women died in crinoline-related fires.

HARRIET TUBMAN’S LIFE & WORK IN CAPE MAY

Harriet Tubman lived in Cape May in the early 1850s, working to help fund her missions to guide enslaved people to freedom. After her initial journeys conducting freedom seekers to Canada, she returned to the states and earned money working in hotels and for private families as a cook. From Cape May, in the fall of 1852, she went back once more to Maryland, and brought away nine more fugitives. The New Jersey Historical Commission says she spent two other summers in Cape May.

Cape May played a pivotal role in the fight to end slavery. Several historic figures critical to the fight against slavery spent their summers in Cape May. The Harriet Tubman Museum building is located on a block that anti-slavery activists called home in Cape May. Lafayette Street and Franklin Street became a center of abolitionist activity centered around three important buildings developed in 1846.

Music in the Victorian Era

It is almost impossible to exaggerate the importance of music in the lives of the Victorians, from those in high society to the working classes, and across the nation. In a world that had only limited methods of mechanically reproducing sounds in the home (such as musical boxes), hearing live music performed was a precious thing, to be cherished forever.

But most people did not seek only to be entertained by professional musicians, they delighted in making music themselves. Thousands of songs and piano pieces were composed and published for the amateur market, which was growing fast, in tandem with increasingly affordable parlor pianos. In the case of well-known songs whose tunes were committed to memory and sung unaccompanied, issuing the words alone was often adequate. In addition, much that was heard on the professional concert platform was frequently packaged for domestic replication, from transcriptions of Beethoven symphonies for piano duet to the arrangement of popular numbers, such as Christy’s Minstrels’ songs, for voices and piano.

For the Victorians, leisure could be deeply self-improving, particularly in the sphere of high art music. Program notes and music appreciation handbooks were used by many Victorian concert and opera-goers.

COLONIAL HOUSE Museum

A hidden treasure in the heart of Cape May City

Located next to Cape May City Hall, the Colonial House (c 1730) was originally a tavern and the family home of Revolutionary War Patriot Memucan Hughes. The front room features a tavern room. Other rooms open to the public in this unsung survivor from Cape Island’s very beginning depict a colonial era cooking/eating room. A fine example of vernacular architecture and one of only a few remaining colonial homes open to the public in Cape May County.

Open Season: June 15th through September 15th

Wednesday through Saturday 1-4pm

Saturdays: “The Historian is In”

Free - Open to the Public

Donations are most welcome for the preservation of the Colonial House
