THIS WEEK inCAPE MAY

Vol. XLVIII Number 5 JUNE 26-JULY 9, 2020

From the Director

Thankfully, Cape May MAC has been able to resurrect our architectural walking tour of Cape May, finally re-opened Cape May Lighthouse on June 20, the World War II Lookout Tower on June 27, as well as the Physick House Museum on July 5. Note that all of these re-openings are with significantly limited access to adhere to social distancing and other safety precautions. You’ll recall, all of our programming had been completely dormant due to the COVID-19 pandemic since the first weekend in March.   At this time, we’ve cancelled the first three of our four Physick Estate festivals. All of our Cape May Music Festival Series concerts have been postponed from late May to mid-June, and will now tentatively take place from Sept. 1 through Nov. 21. Under the Governor’s Executive Order #125, we will be able to resume limited open air-only trolley tours shortly, but with seating capacity limited to 35 percent of the norm.   The reality remains that while we have reduced staff to either half-pay, or furloughed some, and even temporarily laid-off others, there is no way we can reduce expenses enough to match the projected revenue losses already incurred, and the reduced anticipated revenue due to the limitations on the number of guests in any of our sites, or on any of our tours, at any given time.   So, while we are sincerely grateful for the tremendous generosity displayed to date, we still are in dire need of financial help. Whether it’s a donation to our operations, purchasing a Cape May MAC membership or a tour/event ticket in advance (even as a gift), or visiting our new online gift shop and making a purchase, any of these kind acts would be most appreciated.   Until we see you again (soon, we hope!), the very best of health to you and all yours.

Welcome to Cape May MAC! We’re happy to welcome you back and hope you enjoy your tour of the Physick Estate, a visit to the Cape May Lighthouse or the World War II Lookout Tower, or our new walking tour. In an abundance of caution, Cape May MAC requires that you do the following:    • Keep 6 feet apart from anyone not in your party.    • Wear a mask at all times while participating in our tours. We will be asking all visitors the following questions upon check-in:    • Are you experiencing flu-like symptoms?    • Have you been in contact with anyone infected    with COVID-19?    • Have you traveled to a high-risk area or country? If you have answered “yes” to any of these questions, we respectfully ask that you do not participate at this time, and return after being asymptomatic for 14 days. If a guest’s temperature is 100.4 or more, we require her/him to take a seat in the shade, and retest in 10 minutes; or, come again at another time. We are requiring the same of our Cape May MAC employees & volunteers. To further ensure your safety, all of our historic sites are getting routine deep cleaning with disinfecting products.

This Old House PRESERVATION OF THE PHYSICK ESTATE Each year, our tour of the Physick House Museum highlights a particular aspect of Victorian life and culture. This year marks Cape May MAC’s 50th Anniversary, and our tours will focus on the Physick House itself. It is fitting, since this is where Cape May MAC began, in its efforts to save the house from the wrecking ball. You will learn of the mansion’s years as a grand residence for the Physick family, to its tragic decline and near demolition and, finally, to its rise as a fully-restored historic landmark. Come join us to learn the compelling story of its life.

50 Years of

MAC

The 50-year journey of the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts & Humanities (MAC) began in 1970 when a small group of dedicated neighbors joined together to save the 1879 Emlen Physick Estate from the wrecker’s ball. Over the years, the organization’s efforts have continued, restoring and opening both the Cape May Lighthouse and the World War II Lookout Tower. Those years also included thousands of special events and tours, all of which contributed to make Cape May MAC Cape May’s leader in heritage tourism, educational outreach, historic preservation and cultural enrichment.

The accepted career for women in the Victorian era was marriage. To get ready for courtship and marriage a girl was groomed like a racehorse. In addition to being able to sing, play an instrument and speak a little French or Italian, the qualities a young Victorian gentlewoman needed were to be innocent, virtuous, biddable, dutiful and be ignorant of intellectual opinion. Yeah, right. 20

GREATER CAPE MAY HISTORICAL SOCIETY

COLONIAL

HOUSE Museum

A hidden treasure in the heart of Cape May City Located next to Cape May City Hall, the Colonial House (c 1730), was originally a tavern and the family home of Revolutionary War Patriot Memucan Hughes. The front room features a tavern room. Other rooms open to the public in this unsung survivor from Cape Island’s very beginning depict a colonial era cooking/eating room. A fine example of vernacular architecture and colonial living back in the days.

The Colonial House is closed for the 2020 Season Visit our website and Like us on Facebook: Greater Cape May Historical Society

Donations benefiting the preservation of the house are most appreciated Visit our website at www.capemayhistory.org Funding has been made possible in part by the New Jersey Historical Commission / Department of State, and the Cape May County Board of Chosen Freeholders through the Cape May County Department of Tourism, Public Information and Culture & Heritage.

GHOSTS

IN VICTORIAN CAPE MAY Cape May is reputedly one of America’s most haunted towns, and nowhere else is this reputation so well-earned as at the 1879 Emlen Physick Estate, Cape May’s original haunted house. For years, MAC’s staffers had felt they were not alone in the house, but it was not until psychic medium Craig McManus began his investigations into the town’s paranormal activities that those who were not regular members of the MAC staff were identified. McManus, who has written several books about Cape May’s hauntings and has documented spirit activity at dozens of the town’s quaint B&B inns and hotel properties, has spent a great deal of time at the Physick house and has identified several of its residents. Most prominent among them is Dr. Physick’s Aunt Emilie, who has great energy and a vibrant smile, according to McManus. “This is a ghost who knows everything that is going on in her home,” McManus wrote. He also explained that, after her death, Emilie had stayed on to watch over the house, which had fallen into disrepair before its restoration began in 1970. Dr. Physick’s mother, Frances Ralston, is no longer in the house, according to McManus, but the strong presence she exerted in her lifetime is still felt as “residual energy,” especially in her bedroom on the second floor, the paranormal hot spot of the home. Another resident is Isabelle, or Bella, Mrs. Ralston’s invalid younger sister

who died in 1883, shortly after the family moved into the mansion. Among the unique spirits that McManus has reported are several of Dr. Physick’s dogs. He encountered several in the house on his first visit, and one romping through the gardens on a later visit. Apparently, there is some disturbance when the dogs are about, because they were never allowed in the house by Mrs. Ralston. Aunt Emilie, however, had a softer spot for Dr. Physick’s canine companions, and prepared their dinners in the estate’s kitchen, and would let them in the house when Mrs. Ralston was absent. The estate’s Carriage House also has its resident spirit, which has been heard by several of the MAC staff whose offices are on the building’s second floor. McManus said this could be one of the servants, possibly a groomsman or driver. One of MAC’s most popular ghost tours is Seance at the Physick Estate, where McManus leads a group of 25 people through the house to commune with its spirit residents. “Cape May’s original haunted house never disappoints,” McManus wrote about a recent tour. “It was one of the best haunting experiences I have had in my career! “There are very few real haunted mansions of this caliber that are open to the public,” he wrote in his book. “If you love the paranormal, this is a must visit!”

A dip in the pool Bathing in the ocean prompted fierce discussion among social critics and visitors. One Cape May visitor commented in 1870 about the women he saw who were brave enough to enter the water in their “ridiculous” costumes: “There is nothing more hideous than a woman in that horrible attire, clinging nervously to the life line or clasping her male protector with a death grip while the waves tumble her about.” When women did enter the water their suits clung to their bodies, revealing far more than any Victorian would have otherwise thought proper. Writers commented that they were “shocked at the daily spectacle the bathing beach presents.” Others thought the whole thing titillating. Not only did swimming call attention to women’s bodies by wet clingy fabric, it also exposed parts of women’s bodies not normally seen. One rogue wave could hike up a skirt or throw a woman inappropriately into the arms of a male companion. Take, for example, one vacationer’s observation of women in the surf: “Fat women are seized by the advancing walls of transparent green, foam crested, are whirled round and round like corks, and dashed into the reluctant arms of their old bachelors, who seem horrified at the gifts of fortune. Manly forms that were proudly defying the coming waves, are suddenly inverted, and nothing is seen of them save wildly agitated pedal extremities.” Although swimming pools were not a major factor in Victorian recreation, some pools were built in the 19th century. The idea behind their construc-

tion was not only to provide the people with a recreational outlet, but also to give the poor an opportunity to clean themselves. Each municipal pool was equipped with showers and dressing rooms. A similar “swimming tank” opened at Long Branch, New Jersey in 1890.

The tank could accommodate as many as 200 to 250 people a day and offered a “view room” with “comfortable chairs where a large number of spectators could look down on the swimmers.” Swimming was beginning to be recognized as a sport; swimming clubs were organized and more and more contests of swimming speed were held. In 1896, swimming was included in the competition of the first Olympic Games. Only men were allowed to participate at that time. The first swimming events for women in the Olympics were added in 1912. The Victorian bathing costume was hardly suited to any type of exercise, and as women’s participation in athletics increased, styles eventually became more streamlined which allowed for the freer movement necessary for swimming. 83
