This Old House PRESERVATION OF THE PHYSICK ESTATE
Each year, our tour of the Physick House Museum highlights a particular aspect of Victorian life and culture. Our tour focuses on the Physick House itself, which is fitting, since this is where Cape May MAC began in 1970, when volunteers launched their efforts to save the house from the wrecking ball. You will learn of the mansion’s years as a grand residence for the Physick family, to its tragic decline and near demolition and, finally, to its rise as a fully-restored historic landmark. Come join us to learn the compelling story of its life.

TROLLEY TOUR Offered Fridays & Saturdays in April, daily in May See Calendar for Times
Don’t be green with envy on this trolley tour when you see how well the rich lived in the early 1900s in the most elegant part of town. You’ll see the broad streets and summer “mansions” on Cape May’s east side on this trolley tour – an area marketed as “New Cape May” at the turn of the 20th Century, for the merely wealthy to the fabulously rich. Tours begin and end at the Washington Street Mall Information Booth, where tickets are sold.
Cape May MAC tours and historic sites will comply with current COVID guidelines. Please visit our website for up-to-date information.

The accepted career for women in the Victorian era was marriage. To get ready for courtship and marriage a girl was groomed like a racehorse. In addition to being able to sing, play an instrument and speak a little French or Italian, the qualities a young Victorian gentlewoman needed were to be innocent, virtuous, biddable, dutiful and be ignorant of intellectual opinion. Yeah, right. 20

Poison me!
In the Victorian era, arsenic wasn’t regarded as a poison in the same way it is today. Women would apply it topically as an agefighting cosmetic, and men would take arsenic pills to get their engines revving. It took many cases of illness and quite a few fatalities before they figured out that arsenic was toxic. 28

Curious collections
In the Victorian era, collecting was a major part of people’s lives. Collections often included “curiosities” such as zoological, botanical or geological finds. Shrunken heads, seashells, antique weapons and clockworks were commonly collected items. These collections would be displayed in a large “cabinet of curiosities.” If you wanted to expand your collection? Just go to the curiosity shop. 35

Parlor games were extremely popular with Victorians, especially at Christmastime. One game was called “Snapdragon,” during which a bunch of raisins were put into a bowl with rum and set on fire. The object of the game was to get the raisins out of the bowl and eat them while they were still on fire. Some games from that era which were simpler and safer are still played today, like charades, and an early version of musical chairs. 36

Creepy Victorian food
Victorians ate virtually every part of an animal, supping on delicacies likes brains and hearts. Another famous dish from the Victorian era was turtle soup. The turtle was prized above all for its green jelly-like fat which was used to flavor the soup made from the long-boiled stringy flesh of the animal. 37

Don’t drink the water
By 1860, England’s Thames River was full of the raw fecal matter and sewage that was being dumped into the water on a daily basis. Since the river was also the main source of drinking water for the city, people died by the thousands from dysentery, cholera, and typhoid. Once again, a great excuse to opt for beer. 38

Stay healthy
In a time when one in four patients died after surgery, you were very lucky in Victorian times to have a good doctor with a clean operating theatre. There was no anesthesia, no painkillers for after, and no electric equipment to reduce the duration of an operation. Victorian surgery wasn’t just creepy, it was outright horrific. 39

Buttoned up as they were, Victorians believed that there was life on Mars. Giovanni Schiaparelli, an Italian astronomer, claimed that he had seen artificial waterways on Mars through his telescope. Apparently, these canals were evidence that extraterrestrial beings on the red planet were attempting either travel or commerce. These ideas were generally quite popular and taken seriously by the public, and surprisingly, people would leave money in their wills dedicated to attempts to make contract with extraterrestrial life. 56

Bottling tears
It wasn’t just Queen Victoria mourning her husband—mourning was a serious business in the Victorian Era. Beautiful, elaborate mourning jewelry would be created for women in mourning, which would incorporate onyx or jet (both black stones) and braided hair from the deceased. Tears cried for the deceased would be collected in bottles, and if you were a bachelor who didn’t leave a widow behind, you could always hire a local blonde woman to wail at your grave and make it seem like you were adored. 64

Swooning Susan
Fainting was common among Victorian women. Corsets made from whalebone, and sometimes even iron or steel, helped women achieve the impossibly tiny waists that were fashionable at the time. A side effect of these binding garments was that circulation would be cut off, and women would have trouble breathing. It was thought that women were prone to fainting from excitement, but really, it was that they would momentarily pass out whenever their heart rates increased as a result of having their midsections bound so tightly.

The way we were The Physick Estate originally contained 14 acres, including the current four acres, the tennis courts, and the Madison Avenue Park. The front lawn of the Physick Estate has been restored to reflect the way it was planted by the Physicks. Working from a c. 1890 photograph, historic landscape specialists were able to identify the original plant material and layout. The Physicks designed their grounds in a formal manner typical of the Victorians. A semi-circular drive bordered the front lawn of the house. At the center of the lawn was a large oval flower bed, filled with plants grown at the estate. Frances Ralston was an avid botanist who had two large greenhouses constructed on the south side of the house and employed a full time gardener.
The oval bed was planted in a style known as carpet bedding, giving it the appearance of a brightly-colored Oriental carpet. It was flanked by concentric “parentheses” of trees and shrubs, very unlike our modern method of restricting plantings to the foundation of the house and borders of the property. Almost certainly, there was also a small kitchen garden located among the outbuildings toward the rear of the estate. Most Victorian families set aside a small plot of land where they grew fresh vegetables and herbs. Maintained by the family’s cook, this garden supplemented the items purchased from the market or traveling peddlers. For information on tours of the Physick Estate, see Page 7.

Who knew?
• Queen Victoria was a prolific writer, writing about 2,500 words every day during her adult life. Although some of her diaries were accidentally destroyed, many of these 122 volumes survive to this day. • Victoria did not like smoking and had ‘no smoking’ signs placed in almost all the rooms in the palace. She also did not like using the newlyinvented telephone. • She enjoyed looking at art and was quite a talented artist herself. On several birthdays and anniversaries, she gave her husband a painting depicting nude, or near-nude women. • Queen Victoria was devastated when her husband died in December, 1861. From that day on, she wore only black and was in a permanent state of mourning. During her reign, there were at least seven attempts to kill her. Several of the would-be assassins were sent to a mental asylum and were declared insane. • Although she treated her staff well, she did not care for Prime Minister Gladstone. Often, she would remain standing so that he had to stand too, despite the fact that he was in his 80s. 80

Consuming poison
In the Victorian era, arsenic wasn’t regarded as a poison in the same way it is today. Women would apply it topically as an age-fighting cosmetic, and men would take arsenic pills to get their engines revving. It took many cases of illness and quite a few fatalities before they figured out that arsenic was toxic.

Keepers of the Light For the first 77 years of its existence, Cape May’s lighthouse was looked after by a Head Keeper, First Assistant Keeper and Second Assistant Keeper. It was their job to light the lantern each night at sunset, ensure it remained lit throughout the night and extinguish it the following morning. In addition, they were tasked by the United States Lighthouse Service with keeping the tower and Keepers’ dwellings painted and properly maintained, storing the massive amounts of oil and other equipment used in the original lanterns, taking care of the expansive lighthouse property and meticulously cleaning the lantern each day. Routine inspections were held by the Lighthouse Service and any deficiency was immediately addressed. William C. Gregory was the first Head Keeper, aided by assistants Samuel Stilwell and John Reeves. Gregory had been the sole keeper of the previous Cape May lighthouse, which was replaced after just 12 years in service. Following his retirement in 1861, he was succeeded as Head Keeper by
Downes E. Foster, Samuel Stillwell, Caleb S. Woolsen, and finally, Harry H. Palmer. The lantern was automated in 1936, making the Keeper and Assistant Keeper positions no longer necessary. Two homes were built just south of the lighthouse in 1860, one for the Head Keeper and the other for his assistants. It proved to be cramped quarters for the two assistants and their families, leading to requests for additional quarters in 1879 and 1896. They finally got their wish when a long-awaited addition was added to the assistant’s home in 1903. Despite retiring and being given his pension following the light’s automation, Palmer chose to stay in the Keeper’s house and maintain the property for the Lighthouse Service. He, his wife and two daughters lived comfortably there for many years. Today, the site is looked after by MAC staff members, one of whom is Palmer’s own granddaughter, Mayhugh Palmer Tees. -- Story by Ben Miller
PHOTOS: Above, Head Keeper Harry H. Palmer. Note that the ladder behind him is OUTSIDE the railing of the watch gallery. A fear of heights was not acceptable for keepers! At right is a photo of the two houses, home to the Head Keeper and his assistants.
