THIS WEEK inCAPE MAY
From the Director
Vol. XLIX Number 1 Mar. 26-May 20, 2021
Spring has sprung, and with the latest forecast of 300 million Americans being fully vaccinated by summer, there’s much to be excited about. Healthy Americans, more willing and able to visit their favorite places, are great for tourism meccas like Cape May, America’s First Seashore Resort and the nation’s only National Landmark City. That said, Cape May MAC has been operating -- even on a limited basis -- without any break this winter, providing Physick House Museum Tours, trolley tours and the Cape May Lighthouse on weekends. March 26 marks the resumption of our regular seven-day schedule for these activities, and we also re-open the World War II Lookout Tower for the season. The 32nd Annual Cape May Music Festival promises to be a return to some degree of normalcy. Last year, the pandemic forced us to have just two live, outdoor concerts. But, we realized the value of virtual concerts thanks to our friends at the Bay Atlantic Symphony (BAS) and the New York Chamber Ensemble (NYCE). This spring, we open the festival with those same musicians performing in virtual concert, followed by a live Zoom Q&A with the conductors and featured artists on May 13. That’s followed by the traditional live Atlantic Brass Band performance at Rotary Park on May 30, live BAS/NYCE concerts on June 3 and 17 on the grounds of the Emlen Physick Estate, and Paula Johns performing at the Estate on June 27. The Friends of the Cape May Music Festival special concert is slated for June 16. The event season actually kicks off on April 24 and May 8 with Crafts & Collectibles shows on the Emlen Physick Estate grounds. The Gardens of Cape May tour will be held on June 12, featuring the gardens of several area homes. We anticipate the return of the Sunset Jazz Concert Series at the Estate later this spring or early this summer, as well as other musical concerts and theatre performances throughout the season. Stay tuned for more details. Cape May is surely gearing-up for a promising 2021. We’re blessed to be able to provide our visitors with so many things to do as the world slowly returns to its axis. This pandemic has taught us how fortunate we are and reminded us how precious every moment and everyone we care about is to us. And there’s no better place to celebrate that than our beloved Cape May. Hope to see you soon! Jody Alessandrine, Director/CEO

This Old House PRESERVATION OF THE PHYSICK ESTATE Each year, our tour of the Physick House Museum highlights a particular aspect of Victorian life and culture. In honor of Cape May MAC’s recent 50th anniversary, our tours will focus on the Physick House itself. It is fitting, since this is where Cape May MAC began, in its efforts to save the house from the wrecking ball. You will learn of the mansion’s years as a grand residence for the Physick family, to its tragic decline and near demolition and, finally, to its rise as a fully-restored historic landmark. Come join us to learn the compelling story of its life.

In a time when one in four patients died after surgery, you were very lucky in Victorian times to have a good doctor with a clean operating theatre. There was no anesthesia, no painkillers for after, and no electric equipment to reduce the duration of an operation. Victorian surgery wasn’t just creepy, it was outright horrific. 18

50 Years of
MAC
The 50-year journey of the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts & Humanities (MAC) began in 1970 when a small group of dedicated neighbors joined together to save the 1879 Emlen Physick Estate from the wrecker’s ball. Over the years, the organization’s efforts have continued, restoring and opening both the Cape May Lighthouse and the World War II Lookout Tower. Those years also included thousands of special events and tours, all of which contributed to make Cape May MAC Cape May’s leader in heritage tourism, educational outreach, historic preservation and cultural enrichment.
Join us as we commemorate those 50 years in words and photos at our
ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION EXHIBIT
at the Carroll Gallery in the Carriage House, 1048 Washington St.

TROLLEY TOUR Saturdays, April 4-24, plus Friday, April 30; Daily beginning May 1 • See Calendar for Times
Don’t be green with envy on this trolley tour when you see how well the rich lived in the early 1900s in the most elegant part of town. You’ll see the broad streets and summer “mansions” on Cape May’s east side on this trolley tour – an area marketed as “New Cape May” at the turn of the 20th Century, for the merely wealthy to the fabulously rich. Tours begin and end at the Washington Street Mall Information Booth, where tickets are sold.
SAFETY PRECAUTIONS: The safety and security of our visitors is paramount. Certain restrictions will apply on all current tours and events. Please see page 6 for details before purchasing tickets.

Bottling tears
It wasn’t just Queen Victoria mourning her husband—mourning was a serious business in the Victorian Era. Beautiful, elaborate mourning jewelry would be created for women in mourning, which would incorporate onyx or jet (both black stones) and braided hair from the deceased. Tears cried for the deceased would be collected in bottles, and if you were a bachelor who didn’t leave a widow behind, you could always hire a local blonde woman to wail at your grave and make it seem like you were adored. 38

Talking to dead people
On top of believing in aliens, Victorians were also strong believers in hypnotism, divination, and spiritualism. Events where attendees could be hypnotized, speak to the dead, or have their futures predicted were extremely popular, and hucksters would make huge money off of gullible Victorians. 44

Working in the coal mines
Working children were common in the Victorian era in England, largely because poor families didn’t earn enough for food without it. One job that had high demand for children was work in the coal mines. Children made excellent coal miners because they could maneuver in tight spaces, and they required far less pay than adult workers. The children would work for 12 to 18 hours in air saturated with coal dust, and there was constant danger. Other jobs included chimney sweeping (where children could start working as young as 3) and working in factories or textile mills. In 1891, the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children was formed, offering some protection to child laborers.

Poison me!
In the Victorian era, arsenic wasn’t regarded as a poison in the same way it is today. Women would apply it topically as an agefighting cosmetic, and men would take arsenic pills to get their engines revving. It took many cases of illness and quite a few fatalities before they figured out that arsenic was toxic. 52

GREATER CAPE MAY HISTORICAL SOCIETY
COLONIAL
HOUSE Museum
A hidden treasure in the heart of Cape May City Located next to Cape May City Hall, the Colonial House (c 1730), was originally a tavern and the family home of Revolutionary War Patriot Memucan Hughes. The front room features a tavern room. Other rooms open to the public in this unsung survivor from Cape Island’s very beginning depict a colonial era cooking/eating room. A fine example of vernacular architecture and colonial living back in the days.
The Colonial House plans to open for the 2021 Season on June 15th Visit our website and Like us on Facebook: Greater Cape May Historical Society
Donations benefiting the preservation of the house are most appreciated Visit our website at www.capemayhistory.org Funding has been made possible in part by the New Jersey Historical Commission / Department of State, and the Cape May County Board of Chosen Freeholders through the Cape May County Department of Tourism, Public Information and Culture & Heritage.

I’ll drink to that!
Now here’s something we can get behind: Clean, potable water was hard to come by in Victorian society. It was generally polluted and considered more dangerous to drink than nature’s other perfect liquid—beer. Whether you were sick, pregnant, or just a child, beer was generally safer to drink than water, and so, you drank it.
MURDER MYSTERY DINNER SATURDAY, APRIL 24: 7PM Aleathea’s Restaurant at the Inn of Cape May, 7 Ocean St.
The scene and the table are both set for “All Bets Are Off,” by Jacky Fazio. After a long weekend in Atlantic City, a group of close friends return to their small town home, eager to show off their big winnings. But one of them has a secret to hide. Loyalty and friendship will be pushed to the limits as they realize they don’t know each other as well as they thought, and maybe they don’t want to. Enjoy a four-course dinner as you interact with the cast of likely suspects and the mystery unfolds around you. Tickets are limited; Order tickets on advance registration required. www.capemaymline at ac.org $65 adults; $30 children (ages 3-12) SAFETY PRECAUTIONS: The safety and security of our visitors is paramount. Certain restrictions will apply on all current tours and events. Please see page 6 for details before purchasing tickets.

Ooh! Yum!!
Street vendors of the Victorian age sold some unusual foods. One popular delicacy was sheep’s feet, which were sold hot or cold. They were called trotters, and could be purchased at a low price from slaughterhouses, so vendors would buy them and prepare them at home by skinning and parboiling them, before selling them to workers in the street. Customers would then suck the meat and fat off the bones. 74

Swooning Susan
Fainting was common among Victorian women. Corsets made from whalebone, and sometimes even iron or steel, helped women achieve the impossibly tiny waists that were fashionable at the time. A side effect of these binding garments was that circulation would be cut off, and women would have trouble breathing. It was thought that women were prone to fainting from excitement, but really, it was that they would momentarily pass out whenever their heart rates increased as a result of having their midsections bound so tightly.

Snack time
It was the Victorians who first invented afternoon tea. This was because the evening meal was eaten later than in previous periods and people found they needed a light meal in the late afternoon. The evening meal was eaten around 8 or even 9 p.m. 76

Seen and not heard
The expression “children should be seen and not heard” originated in the Victorian era, and referred to the way that the children of affluent or upper-class families were expected to behave. Upper class children were rarely in contact with their parents, and were mostly raised by a nanny. They were expected to be proper and polite, and they were not allowed to be loud. 78

Down the aisle
The accepted career for women in the Victorian era was marriage. To get ready for courtship and marriage a girl was groomed like a racehorse. In addition to being able to sing, play an instrument and speak a little French or Italian, the qualities a young Victorian gentlewoman needed were to be innocent, virtuous, biddable, dutiful and be ignorant of intellectual opinion. Yeah, right. 80

Seeking life on Mars
Buttoned up as they were, Victorians believed that there was life on Mars. Giovanni Schiaparelli, an Italian astronomer, claimed that he had seen artificial waterways on Mars through his telescope. Apparently, these canals were evidence that extraterrestrial beings on the red planet were attempting either travel or commerce. These ideas were generally quite popular and taken seriously by the public, and surprisingly, people would leave money in their wills dedicated to attempts to make contract with extraterrestrial life.

Busy hands
So many women’s activities of the mid and late 19th century served to show that they were middle class. Making artificial flowers was one of these. Both time-consuming and useless, making artificial flowers proved that your husband’s income made it possible for you to do no housework. Along with disabling clothing and countless crafts, flower-making was a visible sign of middle-class-ness. The conventions of the time made women almost literally prisoners in their parlors.
