The accepted career for women in the Victorian era was marriage. To get ready for courtship and marriage a girl was groomed like a racehorse. In addition to being able to sing, play an instrument and speak a little French or Italian, the qualities a young Victorian gentlewoman needed were to be innocent, virtuous, biddable, dutiful and be ignorant of intellectual opinion. Yeah, right.

In the Victorian era, arsenic wasn’t regarded as a poison in the same way it is today. Women would apply it topically as an agefighting cosmetic, and men would take arsenic pills to get their engines revving. It took many cases of illness and quite a few fatalities before they figured out that arsenic was toxic.

Fainting was common among Victorian women. Corsets made from whalebone, and sometimes even iron or steel, helped women achieve the impossibly tiny waists that were fashionable at the time. A side effect of these binding garments was that circulation would be cut off, and women would have trouble breathing. It was thought that women were prone to fainting from excitement, but really, it was that they would momentarily pass out whenever their heart rates increased as a result of having their midsections bound so tightly.

Working children were common in the Victorian era in England, largely because poor families didn’t earn enough for food without it. One job that had high demand for children was work in the coal mines. Children made excellent coal miners because they could maneuver in tight spaces, and they required far less pay than adult workers. The children would work for 12 to 18 hours in air saturated with coal dust, and there was constant danger. Other jobs included chimney sweeping (where children could start working as young as 3) and working in factories or textile mills. In 1891, the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children was formed, offering some protection to child laborers.

Don’t drink the water
By 1860, England’s Thames River was full of the raw fecal matter and sewage that was being dumped into the water on a daily basis. Since the river was also the main source of drinking water for the city, people died by the thousands from dysentery, cholera, and typhoid. Once again, a great excuse to opt for beer.

Visit the renowned Harriet Tubman Museum of New Jersey that tells the story of this hero of the Underground Railroad and combine it with the Underground Railroad Trolley that is part of the National Park Service’s Network to Freedom. The Harriet Tubman Museum officially opened in 2021 to national accolades. Cape May was part of the Underground Railroad and this 2.5 hour combination tour tells the story of those dangerous days. Hear how legendary anti-slavery fighter, Harriet Tubman, walked these streets, as did prominent railroad businessman and former slave, Stephen Smith, whose railroad cars carried hundreds to freedom. The tour begins at the Washington Street Mall Information Booth and travels through parts of Cape May and West Cape May, with stops along the way, including the Mt. Zion Cemetery, and ends with a tour at the Harriet Tubman Museum of New Jersey.

Tour co-sponsored by the Harriet Tubman Museum of New Jersey, Cape May MAC and Center for Community Arts (CCA)
Harriet Tubman lived in Cape May in the early 1850s, working to help fund her missions to guide enslaved people to freedom. After her initial journeys conducting freedom seekers to Canada, she returned to the states and earned money working in hotels and for private families as a cook. From Cape May, in the fall of 1852, she went back once more to Maryland, and brought away nine more fugitives. The New Jersey Historical Commission says she spent two other summers in Cape May.
Cape May played a pivotal role in the fight to end slavery. Several historic figures critical to the fight against slavery spent their summers in Cape May. The Harriet Tubman Museum building is located on a block that anti-slavery activists called home in Cape May. Lafayette Street and Franklin Street became a center of abolitionist activity centered around three important buildings developed in 1846.
Located next to Cape May City Hall, the Colonial House (c 1730) was originally a tavern and the family home of Revolutionary War Patriot Memucan Hughes. The front room features a tavern room. Other rooms open to the public in this unsung survivor from Cape Island’s very beginning depict a colonial era cooking/eating room. A fine example of vernacular architecture and one of only a few remaining colonial homes open to the public in Cape May County.

This circa 1800s-1930s boat helps illuminate life saving history at the Jersey Shore and is an integral part of U.S. Life Saving Service & U.S. Coast Guard history. Come learn more on your next Lighthouse visit.
The boat is a restoration project of the Cape May Maritime and Educational Center and will be on long-term display here, in association with Cape May MAC
(in addition to the fantastic food!)
Vintage is located at 1048 Washington St. on the grounds of the 1879 Emlen Physick Estate, Cape May’s only Victorian house museum. It has plenty of free parking on premises, and the tent overlooking the beautiful gardens and grounds makes for an amazing dining experience.
Just show your Cape May MAC Membership card, and get 15% off. That’s a great reason to become a Cape May MAC Member, too! Memberships are available at the Carriage House Visitors Center or online at capemaymac.org/support/membership/ * Discount applies to membership cardholder only

As a member of Cape May MAC, your membership dues directly supports our mission of promoting preservation, culture and the arts in Cape May. You also play a role in continuing our non-profit’s 50+ year history of interpreting Cape May’s heritage – from our inception by rescuing the Emlen Physick Estate from demolition, to developing Victorian era tourism, restoring the historic Cape May Lighthouse and World War II Lookout Tower, providing museum education, celebrating the arts by creating the Cape May Music Festival, and leading the way in expanding the region’s tourism season.
And remember, your Membership is tax-deductible and brings with it free and discounted tours, discounts in our Museum Shops and Vintage BYOB, advance notice of upcoming events and more!
