Victorian Christmas Traditions
Holly was more popular than mistletoe for various reasons, the most important being price. Holly cost less than half the price of mistletoe, and there was more of it. Holly can be grown in any hedge, while mistletoe grows only in the branches of specific trees, such as apple and hawthorn. Thus, mistletoe was frequently seen as the purchase of the wealthy classes or those who hosted parties. As such, it became something of a status symbol to have some in your house. A few weeks before Christmas, street vendors often scrounged the neighborhoods of London for holly. It was a precarious trade, however, since vendors often had to trespass onto private grounds and land to obtain these festive branches. If caught by the master of the house or its servants, the vendor was lucky to have only the holly taken away from him. To obtain mistletoe, vendors had to trespass in orchards and often faced danger from dogs, traps and spring guns. Thus, they scrounged for mistletoe much more rarely. 20

Victorian Christmas Traditions
Wassail punch was a popular winter drink made from a mixture of fruit, cider and spices. Victorians served it to carolers who went from house to house singing Christmas carols and hymns. After all the carols were sung, the carolers were invited into the houses of Victorian families to share a sip of wassail from the communal wassail bowl. This tradition of inviting carolers for a sip of wassail began in the Elizabethan era. 21

During the Victorian era, oysters were plentiful and cheap. Small oysters were often sold as fast food on the streets, as well as pickled to keep for later. Bigger oysters were either put in stews and pies or eaten on their own. Oysters were also frequently consumed in public houses and went nicely with a pint of stout beer. Knowing this, it comes as no surprise that, in this era, the demand for oysters, which were also known as “the poor man’s protein,” was high. For those who could not afford any other meat, it was oysters and not turkey that was most often the centerpiece of the Christmas dinner. 22

Victorian Christmas Traditions
The Victorians were extremely fond of entertainment and parlor games, and there was no better time for that than Christmas. Parlor games were entertaining, helped pass the time, and cheered everyone up during times when there was little else to do. At times, however, these games were downright dangerous and reckless. Take snapdragon, for example. During this game, a bunch of raisins were piled into a bowl with rum and then the rum was set on fire. The task was to snatch the raisins out of the bowl and eat them while they were still ablaze. 23

Victorian Christmas Traditions
Christmasing was a Christmas tradition whereby vendors gathered various festive branches, such as mistletoe and holly, and sold them for profit in the days before Christmas. Houses, pubs, inns and churches were heavily decorated with these festive branches and often, puddings and sometimes even mince pies were decorated in this way, also. 26

Victorian Christmas Traditions
In 1843 Henry Cole asked an artist to make a card for him to send out at Christmas. It featured a family sitting around a dinner table and a Christmas message. The idea seemed to catch on and soon many wealthy Victorian families were sending out their own cards. Victorian children were encouraged to make their own cards and there is even evidence that Queen Victoria had her own children do this. The first printed Christmas cards were very expensive to manufacture, but the price went down dramatically during the Victorian period. This was due to improvements in color printing technology and the new halfpenny postage rate. In 1880 over 11 million Christmas cards were printed!

Victorian Christmas Traditions
Many people think that Prince Albert (Queen Victoria’s husband) was responsible for shaping how Christmas was celebrated by British Victorian families. He was born in Germany, where evergreen trees were traditionally brought into the home at Christmas time and decorated (with candles, sweets and fruit). In 1848, the royal family was pictured celebrating Christmas around a decorated tree, and the fashion for Christmas trees spread very quickly from this point on. 36

Victorian Christmas Traditions
In 1848 a British sweet maker, Tom Smith, came up with a the idea for the Christmas cracker. When he visited Paris Tom noticed that sugared almonds were sold in twists of paper (bon bons). He used this as inspiration for his Christmas crackers – sweets wrapped in a paper package that snapped apart when you pulled the ends. During the Victorian period, Tom Smith’s idea was adapted and improved. The sweets were often replaced with Christmas paper hats and small gifts were added. The Christmas crackers of the later Victorian era were quite similar to the crackers placed on today’s Christmas dinner tables. 38

Victorian Christmas Traditions
Like many of us, Victoria and Albert enjoyed turkey at Christmas time. They would sit together as a family for their main meal and enjoy turkey with all the trimmings. As you would expect, the royal family were fortunate to share in several courses. These would include mince pies plus various starters, soups, the turkey and chipolatas. Later, they might indulge in a plum pudding to satisfy the royal sweet tooth. The food overall was very rich and could also include beef or even boar’s head, as well as a selection of cold meats. Naturally, finances influenced what families put on their Christmas tables, and the majority of people in Victorian England were not wealthy. Where possible, a festive bird remained central to a family dinner and for many this would have meant a goose, like Charles Dickens illustrates in A Christmas Carol. Some even joined a goose club so they could pay in installments throughout the year. Today, most Christmas meals are centered around a turkey, and the modern feast is perhaps not too dissimilar to the Victorian Christmas. 41

Victorian Christmas Traditions
Christmas drastically changed during the Victorian period. As well as the traditions, it also became a holiday about spending time with family and loved ones. As we have seen, this was partly due to the influence of Queen Victoria and Albert, perceived as icons of wholesome family life. However, another reason that families celebrating together became so integral to Christmas was the advancement of the railway. This made it easier for people who had moved to the cities away from their families for better work to return for Christmas. A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens, published in 1843, was wildly popular and encapsulated the idea that charitable giving and spending time with family was at the heart of Christmas. It also featured Scrooge sending Bob Cratchitt a large turkey for Christmas - in fact, goose was the more common choice for families at the time. The Victorian period was also a huge period of social care. Many Victorians felt that everyone was entitled to enjoy themselves at Christmas. In 1851 a marquee was set up in Leicester Square in London, to feed people who were homeless or struggling. 22,000 people were fed roast beef pie, porter, plum pudding, tea, coffee and more, surrounded by festive lights and flowers. Similar events took place in cities all across the country. 51

Victorian Christmas Traditions
For Christians, the day after Christmas Day is St Stephen’s Day - and it was only in Victorian times that it became known as Boxing Day (just after Victoria became Queen). We don’t really know where the name comes from. Some historians think it replaced Twelfth Night as the day when rich people wrapped presents in boxes for their servants. 52

Victorian Christmas Traditions
Originally seasonal gift giving was reserved for the New Year’s celebrations. With the increasing popularity of Christmas as a time for family and charity however, giving gifts gradually became a Christmas tradition. Mass production, as a result of the Industrial Revolution, meant that items such as children’s toys became more affordable for the middle classes. Increased wealth generated by Victorian industry meanwhile also meant that the middle classes could take days off work for Christmas and New Year. Traditional gifts for children included skipping ropes, toy soldiers and beer, while adults would exchange fruit and books. Before the 1870s, gifts were not wrapped in paper - they were simply placed under the tree and everyone could see what they would be getting. 61

Victorian Christmas Traditions
At the beginning of the Victorian period families often gave and received presents to celebrate the New Year. But, as the importance of Christmas as a family celebration grew, the gift-giving was moved to Christmas. The first Victorian Christmas presents were fairly small – gifts such as fruits, nuts, sweets and handmade items were hung from the branches of the Christmas tree. The size and expense of the gifts steadily increased. Victorians started to buy gifts from shops and they were often too big to hang from the tree. By the end of the Victorian era, many families had taken to leaving Christmas gifts under the tree. 69
What is the oldest Christmas carol?
The French version of “The Friendly Beasts” (written about the animals surrounding Christ at the nativity) traces back to the 12th century, making it a strong contender for the oldest Christmas carol that people still sing regularly today. Another French oldie, “Entre le bœuf et l’âne gris” (English: “Between the Ox and the Grey Ass”), is placed by scholars as far back as the 13th century. The German/Latin carol “In Dulci Jubilo” (later used by Johann Sebastian Bach) also dates back to the Middle Ages. Source: billboard.com

HOUSE
Museum A hidden treasure in the heart of Cape May City
Located next to Cape May City Hall, the Colonial House (c 1730) was originally a tavern and the family home of Revolutionary War Patriot Memucan Hughes. The front room features a tavern room. Other rooms open to the public in this unsung survivor from Cape Island’s very beginning depict a colonial era cooking/eating room. A fine example of vernacular architecture and one of only a few remaining colonial homes open to the public in Cape May County.

Everyone likes to keep a clean recycling container in their kitchen I ·· I I
BUT REMEMBER:
If you use a plastic bag for recy clables, when placing the recyclables in your c urbside container for collection, EMPTY the bag into the Container and p ut the plastic bag in the TRASH.
Bagged Recyclables are a serious problem for curbside recycling collections. Plastic bags are not accepted in the Cape May County Recycling Program.

‘Twas the night before Christmas
on Washington Street The office was closed up, all tidy and neat. All of MAC’s staffers were snug in their homes When they noticed a text coming in on their phones. It was from the Director, who said in his text, “Sorry to be a bother, but this oversight has left me a little vexed. “We did all our tours, but then I discovered There is still something important that we haven’t covered. “We work hard to print our great “This Week in Cape May” But we haven’t thanked the people who help make it that way.
“To our advertisers,” we say, “we couldn’t do it without you; And to our loyal readers, we appreciate you, too!” And so he exclaimed as he pulled on his Santa hat Merry Christmas to all, and Roger that!
Merry Christmas & Happy New Year from all of us at Cape MayMAC 103
A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens “A Christmas Carol” is a novella by English author Charles Dickens, first published on Dec. 19, 1843. The story tells of bitter and miserly Ebenezer Scrooge’s transformation after supernatural visits from Jacob Marley and the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Yet to Come. The novella met with instant success and critical acclaim. The book was written and published in early Victorian Era Britain, a period when there was both strong nostalgia for old Christmas traditions and an initiation of new practices, such as Christmas trees and greeting cards. The tale has been credited with restoring the holiday to one of merri-
ment and festivity in Britain and America after a period of sobriety and somberness. A Christmas Carol remains popular, has never been out of print, and has been adapted to film, stage, opera, and other media multiple times. “A Christmas Carol” was one of the greatest influences in rejuvenating the old Christmas traditions of England but, while it brings images of light, joy, warmth and life, it also brings strong and unforgettable images of darkness, despair, coldness, sadness and death. Scrooge himself is the embodiment of winter, and, just as winter is followed by spring and the renewal of life, so too is Scrooge’s cold, pinched heart restored to the innocent goodwill he had known in his youth.

Love Christmas?
Thank Queen Victoria and Prince Albert One of the main reasons the Victorians fell in love with Christmas was because of the way the Royal family celebrated it. Sam Bilton investigates the festive feasts and other Christmas traditions. Queen Victoria had grown up with the tradition of decorating a tree at Christmas time. The custom had been introduced to the English court by her Hanoverian ancestors and was continued by her German mother. However, it was the queen’s husband, Prince Albert, who truly relished this ritual. After their marriage, Albert took on personal responsibility for decorating the trees at Windsor Castle with wax candles and sweets such as barley sugar and sugar plums. These were actually caraway or aniseed comfits, covered with boiled sugar and crafted into the shape of a plum. A little wire ‘stalk’ at the top made them convenient for hanging on trees. The queen appears to have been as enamored with Christmas as her husband: “Christmas, I always look upon as a most dear happy time, also for Albert, who enjoyed it naturally still more in his happy home, which mine, certainly, as a child, was not. It is a pleasure to have this blessed festival associated with one’s happiest days. The very smell of the Christmas trees of pleasant memories. To think, we have already two children now, and one who already enjoys the sight, — it seems like a dream.” Entry from Queen Victoria’s journal on 24 December 1841
By the 1860s, hundreds of Christmas trees were being sold in Covent Garden. Originally, trees would be decorated with oranges stuck with cloves, cinnamon sticks and pine cones. Sometimes the nut would be removed from a walnut shell and replaced by a small gift or candy before being hung on a tree. Just like today, Victorian children looked forward to opening their Christ-
mas stockings. During the 19th century, handmade presents were the order of the day. Sweets were a particular favorite. These would mostly take the form of sugar candies like barley sugar, which could be twisted into different shapes – including canes. If you were really lucky you might be given some Toffee although many less well off children had to content themselves with an orange and a few nuts. crisp. Gingerbread was no stranger to our shores, being sold at fairs (like the Nottingham Goose Fair) or eaten on feast days. However, it is thought that Prince Albert helped spread the popularity of gingerbread as a Christmas treat. “Albert arranged a surprise for the children. In Germany the old saying that St. Nicholas appears with a rod for naughty children, & gingerbread for good ones, is constantly represented, & Arthur hearing of this begged for one. Accordingly Albert got up a St. Nicholas, most formidable he looking, in black, covered with snow, a long white beard, & red nose, — of a gigantic stature! He came in asking the Children, who were somewhat awed & alarmed, — “are you a good child, & giving them gingerbread & apples.” Entry from Queen Victoria’s journal on 24 December 1856
It was a regular Christmas dinner, with turkeys, Baron of Beef, Plum Pudding & Mince Pies. Entry from Queen Victoria’s journal 25th December 1843.
Perhaps this was a regular Christmas dinner for Queen Victoria, but for her subjects the Christmas feast was a less elaborate affair. No matter what your economic circumstances a festive bird was central to Christmas dinner. During the early part of Victoria’s reign this would have meant a goose (like the one consumed by the Cratchits in Dickens’ A Christmas Carol).
