Victorian Christmas Traditions
The Victorians were extremely fond of entertainment and parlor games, and there was no better time for that than Christmas. Parlor games were entertaining, helped pass the time, and cheered everyone up during times when there was little else to do. At times, however, these games were downright dangerous and reckless. Take snapdragon, for example. During this game, a bunch of raisins were piled into a bowl with rum and then the rum was set on fire. The task was to snatch the raisins out of the bowl and eat them while they were still ablaze.

The English tradition of the wassail bowl and serving plum pudding transitioned to America in many areas. The plum pudding held charms holding symbolism for the person who ended up with that particular piece of dessert–a ring for marriage, a coin for wealth, and a silver thimble for a happy yet single life. Being a German delicacy at the time, carp was often enjoyed by Victorian families served on special china sets decorated with fish imagery during Christmas feasts, as well. Many American homes also enjoyed turkey, ham, jams, jellies, pickles and several types of potatoes along with oyster dressing, pudding, and stew. Not so different than some of the items we feast on during the holiday season today.

Victorian Christmas Traditions
In 1848 a British sweet maker, Tom Smith, came up with a the idea for the Christmas cracker. When he visited Paris, Tom noticed that sugared almonds were sold in twists of paper (bon bons). He used this as inspiration for his Christmas crackers – sweets wrapped in a paper package that snapped apart when you pulled the ends. During the Victorian period, Tom Smith’s idea was adapted and improved. The sweets were often replaced with Christmas paper hats and small gifts were added. The Christmas crackers of the later Victorian era were quite similar to the crackers placed on today’s Christmas dinner tables.

Victorian Christmas Traditions
In 1843, Henry Cole asked an artist to make a card for him to send out at Christmas. It featured a family sitting around a dinner table and a Christmas message. The idea seemed to catch on and soon many wealthy Victorian families were sending out their own cards.
Victorian children were encouraged to make their own cards and there is even evidence that Queen Victoria had her own children do this. The first printed Christmas cards were very expensive to manufacture, but the price went down dramatically during the Victorian period. This was due to improvements in color printing technology and the new halfpenny postage rate. In 1880 over 11 million Christmas cards were printed!

Victorian Christmas Traditions
While carols were not new to the Victorians, it was a tradition that they actively revived and popularized. The Victorians considered carols to be a delightful form of musical entertainment, and a pleasure well worth cultivating. Old words were put to new tunes and the first significant collection of carols was published in 1833 for all to enjoy.

Victorian Christmas Traditions
Candles were a firm fixture of the Victorian Christmas and were used in different variants. In many households, an advent wreath would be displayed in the run-up to Christmas. The four candles and the evergreen wreath symbolize belief, good fortune, love and peace. Lighting the candles is supposed to show that the birth of Christ brings light into the world. It was also customary to display a candle in the window during the twelve days of the Christmas festivities. It was intended as a sign to travellers that food and shelter was available in this house. Merchants also liked to give their customers candles. They were indispensible and a vital part of every Victorian Christmas tree, often made by hand and carefully placed on each branch.

Victorian Christmas Traditions
During the Victorian era, oysters were plentiful and cheap. Small oysters were often sold as fast food on the streets, as well as pickled to keep for later. Bigger oysters were either put in stews and pies or eaten on their own. Oysters were also frequently consumed in public houses and went nicely with a pint of stout beer. Knowing this, it comes as no surprise that, in this era, the demand for oysters, which were also known as “the poor man’s protein,” was high. For those who could not afford any other meat, it was oysters and not turkey that was most often the centerpiece of the Christmas dinner.

Victorian Christmas Traditions
At the beginning of the Victorian period, families often gave and received presents to celebrate the New Year. But, as the importance of Christmas as a family celebration grew, the gift-giving was moved to Christmas. The first Victorian Christmas presents were fairly small – gifts such as fruits, nuts, sweets and handmade items were hung from the branches of the Christmas tree. The size and expense of the gifts steadily increased. Victorians started to buy gifts from shops and they were often too big to hang from the tree. By the end of the Victorian era, many families had taken to leaving Christmas gifts under the tree.

Victorian Christmas Traditions
In the days before radio, television and movies, entertainment was spun closer to home. In fact, the Victorian parlor where a piano or organ often stood was center stage for Christmas Day entertainment. Family members and visiting friends would recite poems, read lively stories, offer songs, or pick up an instrument for a musical solo. Children would practice for weeks in preparation. Parlor games were also played including charades and the reenactment of historical events. All the while, a bowl of wassail or mulled spiced cider was on hand for refreshment.

Victorian Christmas Traditions
Christmasing was a Christmas tradition whereby vendors gathered various festive branches, such as mistletoe and holly, and sold them for profit in the days before Christmas. Houses, pubs, inns and churches were heavily decorated with these festive branches and often, puddings and sometimes even mince pies were decorated in this way, also.

Victorian Christmas Traditions
The roast turkey also has its beginnings in Victorian Britain. Previously other forms of roasted meat such as beef and goose were the centerpiece of the Christmas dinner. The turkey was added to this by the more wealthy sections of the community in the 19th century, but its perfect size for a middle class family gathering meant it became the dominant dish by the beginning of the 20th century.

Victorian Christmas Traditions
Many people think that Prince Albert (Queen Victoria’s husband) was responsible for shaping how Christmas was celebrated by British Victorian families. He was born in Germany, where evergreen trees were traditionally brought into the home at Christmas time and decorated (with candles, sweets and fruit). In 1848, the royal family were pictured celebrating Christmas around a decorated tree, and the fashion for Christmas trees spread very quickly from this point on.

Before the middle of the 19th century, the kissing bough was the primary piece of decorative greenery in the Victorian home for the holidays. A kissing bough, sometimes called a kissing ball, is a double hoop of evergreen boughs, holly, ivy, apples, pears, ribbons, lighted candles, and other ornaments with streamers going up to a central point and a sprig of mistletoe hung from its center. Victorian Christmas traditions dictate that any woman who wanders under the kissing bough has to allow herself to be kissed.

Victorian Christmas Traditions
A photo of Queen Victoria, who was quite the trendsetter in her day, near a bedecked Christmas tree with her family sparked a tree-trimming frenzy in Victorian households. The German custom of tabletop Christmas trees was taken to new heights by Victorians who placed them on the floor in their homes. They adorned their beloved evergreens with flickering candles, fancy paper Santas, glistening angels, chocolate wreaths, gilded apples, and silver cornucopias holding treats decorated with tinsel.

Victorian Christmas Traditions
Victorians may be thought of today as prudish, but “kissing balls” made of evergreen and mistletoe were popular in the Victorian era for the same reason that it’s remained a tradition ever since—the chance to get a kiss under the mistletoe.

Although some Victorian families celebrated Christmas with roast goose or beef, it was in Victorian times that roast turkey became the main part of the Christmas dinner. By the end of the Victorian period, most families would roast a turkey for Christmas.

Victorian Christmas Traditions
Wassail, an alcoholic punch made with apples, was an ancient but still popular drink at Victorian Christmas gatherings. In apple-growing regions like Kent and Devonshire, farmers would additionally toast or salute the apple tree and pour wassail over its roots in preparation for a good harvest year. Oh, and to ward off evil spirits, they might shoot at the branches with rifles.

Victorian Christmas Traditions
The Victorian parlor where a piano or organ often stood was center stage for Christmas Day entertainment.

COLONIAL HOUSE Museum
A hidden treasure in the heart of Cape May City
Located next to Cape May City Hall, the Colonial House (c 1730) was originally a tavern and the family home of Revolutionary War Patriot Memucan Hughes. The front room features a tavern room. Other rooms open to the public in this unsung survivor from Cape Island’s very beginning depict a colonial era cooking/eating room. A fine example of vernacular architecture and one of only a few remaining colonial homes open to the public in Cape May County.

A Christmas Carol
by Charles Dickens“A Christmas Carol” is a novella by English author Charles Dickens, first published on Dec. 19, 1843. The story tells of bitter and miserly Ebenezer Scrooge’s transformation after supernatural visits from Jacob Marley and the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Yet to Come. The novella met with instant success and critical acclaim.
The book was written and published in early Victorian Era Britain, a period when there was both strong nostalgia for old Christmas traditions and an initiation of new practices, such as Christmas trees and greeting cards.
The tale has been credited with restor ing the holiday to one of merri
ment and festivity in Britain and America after a period of sobriety and somberness. A Christmas Carol remains popular, has never been out of print, and has been adapted to film, stage, opera, and other media multiple times.
“A Christmas Carol” was one of the greatest influences in rejuvenating the old Christmas traditions of England but, while it brings images of light, joy, warmth and life, it also brings strong and unforgettable images of darkness, despair, coldness, sadness and death. Scrooge himself is the embodiment of winter, and, just as winter is followed by spring and the renewal of life, so too is Scrooge’s cold, pinched heart restored to the innocent goodwill he had known in his youth.
