Welcome to Cape May MAC! Well, it’s finally upon us, Holiday Season 2021, and we’re gearing up for a full slate of holiday programming while keeping safety for our guests, staff, volunteers and property-owner partners a priority. Thus, we continue to require masks be worn on all Physick House Museum tours, as well as in both of our museum shops: at the Physick Estate’s Carriage House and the Cape May Lighthouse’s Oil House. In addition, for our holiday tours in private homes and B&Bs, masks will also be required. We continue to comport with the state’s public transportation mandate by requiring masks be worn on all our trolley tours although they remain open-air. With that out of the way, I invite you to look at the many offerings in this publication. You’ll see that we have something for absolutely everyone throughout the six-week holiday season. Festivities kick off with our annual tree lighting on Saturday, Nov. 20 at the Physick Estate, featuring a holiday concert by the Atlantic Brass Band. We’re pleased to present a brand new combination tour, “All That Glitters.” The year is 1899 in this first-person, interpretive, guided tour, which takes you on a shopping trip, preparing for the Physick Family’s turn-ofthe-century New Year’s party! And, of course, it wouldn’t be the season in Cape May without our signature Christmas Candlelight Tours on the three Saturdays before Christmas. Special thanks to the property owners who have opened their homes again for this and our other very merry house tours. Wishing you and all of yours the happiest and healthiest of holidays from all of us at Cape May MAC, and to all, a wonderful 2022! Jody Alessandrine, Director/CEO 6

This Old House PRESERVATION OF THE PHYSICK ESTATE Each year, our tour of the Physick House Museum highlights a particular aspect of Victorian life and culture. In honor of Cape May MAC’s recent 50th anniversary, our tours will focus on the Physick House itself. It is fitting, since this is where Cape May MAC began, in its efforts to save the house from the wrecking ball. You will learn of the mansion’s years as a grand residence for the Physick family, to its tragic decline and near demolition and, finally, to its rise as a fully-restored historic landmark. Come join us to learn the compelling story of its life.

Victorian Christmas Traditions
The Victorians were extremely fond of entertainment and parlor games, and there was no better time for that than Christmas. Parlor games were entertaining, helped pass the time, and cheered everyone up during times when there was little else to do. At times, however, these games were downright dangerous and reckless. Take snapdragon, for example. During this game, a bunch of raisins were piled into a bowl with rum and then the rum was set on fire. The task was to snatch the raisins out of the bowl and eat them while they were still ablaze. 17

Victorian Christmas Traditions
While carols were not new to the Victorians, it was a tradition that they actively revived and popularized. The Victorians considered carols to be a delightful form of musical entertainment, and a pleasure well worth cultivating. Old words were put to new tunes and the first significant collection of carols was published in 1833 for all to enjoy. 18

The first Victorian mince pies were made of meat (a recipe that dates from Tudor times), but the mince pies made later in the 19th century didn’t contain meat and were pretty much like the ones we enjoy today. 28

Victorian Christmas Traditions
Holly was more popular than mistletoe for various reasons, the most important being price. Holly cost less than half the price of mistletoe, and there was more of it. Holly can be grown in any hedge, while mistletoe grows only in the branches of specific trees, such as apple and hawthorn. Thus, mistletoe was frequently seen as the purchase of the wealthy classes or those who hosted parties. As such, it became something of a status symbol to have some in your house. A few weeks before Christmas, street vendors often scrounged the neighborhoods of London for holly. It was a precarious trade, however, since vendors often had to trespass onto private grounds and land to obtain these festive branches. If caught by the master of the house or its servants, the vendor was lucky to have only the holly taken away from him. To obtain mistletoe, vendors had to trespass orchards and often faced danger from dogs, traps and spring guns. Thus, they scrounged for mistletoe much more rarely. 30

Victorian Christmas Traditions
The roast turkey also has its beginnings in Victorian Britain. Previously other forms of roasted meat such as beef and goose were the centerpiece of the Christmas dinner. The turkey was added to this by the more wealthy sections of the community in the 19th century, but its perfect size for a middle class family gathering meant it became the dominant dish by the beginning of the 20th century. 32

Victorian Christmas Traditions
During the Victorian era, oysters were plentiful and cheap. Small oysters were often sold as fast food on the streets, as well as pickled to keep for later. Bigger oysters were either put in stews and pies or eaten on their own. Oysters were also frequently consumed in public houses and went nicely with a pint of stout beer. Knowing this, it comes as no surprise that, in this era, the demand for oysters, which were also known as “the poor man’s protein,” was high. For those who could not afford any other meat, it was oysters and not turkey that was most often the centerpiece of the Christmas dinner. 33

Victorian Christmas Traditions
The English tradition of the wassail bowl and serving plum pudding transitioned to America in many areas. The plum pudding held charms holding symbolism for the person who ended up with that particular piece of dessert–a ring for marriage, a coin for wealth, and a silver thimble for a happy yet single life. Being a German delicacy at the time, carp was often enjoyed by Victorian families served on special china sets decorated with fish imagery during Christmas feasts, as well. Many American homes also enjoyed turkey, ham, jams, jellies, pickles and several types of potatoes along with oyster dressing, pudding, and stew. Not so different than some of the items we feast on during the holiday season today. 35

Victorian Christmas Traditions
Candles were a firm fixture of the Victorian Christmas and were used in different variants. In many households, an advent wreath would be displayed in the run-up to Christmas. The four candles and the evergreen wreath symbolise belief, good fortune, love and peace. Lighting the candles is supposed to show that the birth of Christ brings light into the world. It was also customary to display a candle in the window during the twelve days of the Christmas festivities. It was intended as a sign to travellers that food and shelter was available in this house. Merchants also liked to give their customers candles. They were indispensible and a vital part of every Victorian Christmas tree, often made by hand and carefully placed on each branch. 39

Victorian Christmas Traditions
The Victorian parlor where a piano or organ often stood was center stage for Christmas Day entertainment. Family members and visiting friends would recite poems, read lively stories, offer songs, or pick up an instrument for a musical solo. Children would practice for weeks in preparation. Parlor games were also played including charades and the reenactment of historical events. All the while, a bowl of wassail or mulled spiced cider was on hand for refreshment. 44

Victorian Christmas Traditions
In 1843, Henry Cole asked an artist to make a card for him to send out at Christmas. It featured a family sitting around a dinner table and a Christmas message. The idea seemed to catch on and soon many wealthy Victorian families were sending out their own cards. Victorian children were encouraged to make their own cards and there is even evidence that Queen Victoria had her own children do this. The first printed Christmas cards were very expensive to manufacture, but the price went down dramatically during the Victorian period. This was due to improvements in color printing technology and the new halfpenny postage rate. In 1880 over 11 million Christmas cards were printed! 45

Victorian Christmas Traditions
In 1848 a British sweet maker, Tom Smith, came up with a the idea for the Christmas cracker. When he visited Paris, Tom noticed that sugared almonds were sold in twists of paper (bon bons). He used this as inspiration for his Christmas crackers – sweets wrapped in a paper package that snapped apart when you pulled the ends. During the Victorian period, Tom Smith’s idea was adapted and improved. The sweets were often replaced with Christmas paper hats and small gifts were added. The Christmas crackers of the later Victorian era were quite similar to the crackers placed on today’s Christmas dinner tables. 53

Victorian Christmas Traditions
Many people think that Prince Albert (Queen Victoria’s husband) was responsible for shaping how Christmas was celebrated by British Victorian families. He was born in Germany, where evergreen trees were traditionally brought into the home at Christmas time and decorated (with candles, sweets and fruit). In 1848, the royal family were pictured celebrating Christmas around a decorated tree, and the fashion for Christmas trees spread very quickly from this point on. 68

Victorian Christmas Traditions
At the beginning of the Victorian period, families often gave and received presents to celebrate the New Year. But, as the importance of Christmas as a family celebration grew, the gift-giving was moved to Christmas. The first Victorian Christmas presents were fairly small – gifts such as fruits, nuts, sweets and handmade items were hung from the branches of the Christmas tree. The size and expense of the gifts steadily increased. Victorians started to buy gifts from shops and they were often too big to hang from the tree. By the end of the Victorian era, many families had taken to leaving Christmas gifts under the tree. 69

‘Twas the night before Christmas
on Washington Street The office was closed up, all tidy and neat. All of MAC’s staffers were snug in their homes When they noticed a text coming in on their phones. It was from the Director, who said in his text, “Sorry to be a bother, but this oversight has left me a little vexed. “We did all our tours, but then I discovered There is still something important that we haven’t covered. “We work hard to print our great “This Week in Cape May” But we haven’t thanked the people who help make it that way.
“To our advertisers,” we say, “we couldn’t do it without you; And to our loyal readers, we appreciate you, too!” And so he exclaimed as he pulled on his Santa hat Merry Christmas to all, and Roger that!

Victorian Christmas Traditions
Christmas Eve is the day on which the closest family members, grandparents, aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews met up. It was a holiday dedicated to the family, an important social foundation in the Victorian age. During the afternoon, the doors of the lounge would open and the longawaited moment had arrived: At long last, everyone could see the wonderfully-decorated Christmas tree with its burning candles. Hanging on the tree alongside pretty die-cuts, lametta and glass ornaments were baskets of sweets and strings of popcorn. Small gifts were also hung on the Christmas tree while the larger ones were placed beneath the tree. All were elaborately packaged in beautiful, colored paper and richly-decorated with ribbons. On Christmas Eve, people exchanged gifts and no-one would be neglected. Depending on the recipient, they would be impatiently or carefully unwrapped. The handiwork would be admired and tried out while toys would be put into operation or tested. After the gift-giving the entertainment began. Christmas Day began with a visit to church. Afterwards, the Christmas goose or other meat was bought and cooking the Christmas dinner begun. What was served varied from area to area. Farming regions enjoyed beef, goose or chicken. The famous English “Christmas pudding” (plum pudding) was baked on the Sunday preceding Advent. The traditional recipe for a Christmas pudding included suet, raisins, prunes, sultanas, currants, nuts, eggs, sugar and flour. The mixture was placed in a pudding basin and then boiled. The most exciting part about plum pudding is that it is flambéed with brandy and carried burning into the darkened room. A decorative sprig of holly is considered essential. Tradition demands that a silver coin, a button, a ring and a thimble be concealed in the plum pudding. Care should therefore be taken when eating it. According to legend, the finder of one of the objects will become rich, marry within a year or remain a bachelor or spinster. Once the celebrations at home have come to an end, the revellers move on to friends. 75

Victorian Christmas Traditions
Before the middle of the 19th century, the kissing bough was the primary piece of decorative greenery in the Victorian home for the holidays. A kissing bough, sometimes called a kissing ball, is a double hoop of evergreen boughs, holly, ivy, apples, pears, ribbons, lighted candles, and other ornaments with streamers going up to a central point and a sprig of mistletoe hung from its center. Victorian Christmas traditions dictate that any woman who wanders under the kissing bough has to allow herself to be kissed.

Victorian Christmas Traditions
In the days before radio, television and movies, entertainment was spun closer to home. In fact, the Victorian parlor where a piano or organ often stood was center stage for Christmas Day entertainment.

Victorian Christmas Traditions
A photo of Queen Victoria, who was quite the trendsetter in her day, near a bedecked Christmas tree with her family sparked a tree-trimming frenzy in Victorian households. The German custom of tabletop Christmas trees was taken to new heights by Victorians who placed them on the floor in their homes. They adorned their beloved evergreens with flickering candles, fancy paper Santas, glistening angels, chocolate wreaths, gilded apples, and silver cornucopias holding treats decorated with tinsel. 80

When Queen Victoria lost her husband Albert in 1861, the Queen went into immediate mourning, and wore black for the next 40 years until her death. During this extended mourning period, she generally lived in seclusion and didn’t attend public events, earning herself the nickname the “Widow of Windsor.” Ironically, Victoria disliked black at funerals, and ensured that the streets of London were decorated in purple and white when she died. 81
