THIS WEEK inCAPE MAY
From the Director
Vol. XLVIII Number 12 NOV. 20-JAN. 7, 2021
If you’re like me, the best thing about the holiday season is that most people treat others with the kindness and respect that we all should (myself included) the entire year. And if there was ever a year we all “Need a little Christmas, right this very moment,” it’s this one. Despite COVID and the subsequent restrictions, our creative and versatile staff created new programming and partnerships to adapt and augment our tours and special events. These include private golf cart tours, new tours of the Physick House Museum, and we promoted more of our charter trolley tours for whole house rentals and those quarantining on vacation together. The 31st Annual Cape May Music Festival culminates with a live performance by the Atlantic Brass Band on Nov. 21 as part of our annual Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony, and another digital performance with a live Q&A Zoom with the conductors and performers on Dec. 3. While there will be no tours of B&Bs, hotels or private homes this holiday season, there will still be our full complement of holiday trolley and Physick House Museum tours, as well as new holiday walking tours, presented by guides in Victorian costume. And, of course, everyone can count on our traditional “An Old-Fashioned Christmas Exhibit” at the Carriage House’s Carroll Gallery on the Emlen Physick Estate. Sincerest thanks to all who have contributed to Cape May MAC to offset our nearly $2 million in revenue losses due to the pandemic. Without your help, it could’ve been even worse. Note that our “$1 donated makes $3” campaign runs through the end of the year— please see https://61671.blackbaudhosting.com/61671/Operations for further details. (Just put “$1 makes $3” in the comments box). And giving the gift of Cape May makes a great holiday offering. Cape May MAC memberships are available online at https://capemaymac. org/support/membership/ To you and all yours, may the season be the best it can, and here’s to a safe, healthy and prosperous 2021. This Old House PRESERVATION OF THE PHYSICK ESTATE Each year, our tour of the Physick House Museum highlights a particular aspect of Victorian life and culture. This year marks Cape May MAC’s 50th Anniversary, and our tours will focus on the Physick House itself. It is fitting, since this is where Cape May MAC began, in its efforts to save the house from the wrecking ball. You will learn of the mansion’s years as a grand residence for the Physick family, to its tragic decline and near demolition and, finally, to its rise as a fully-restored historic landmark. Come join us to learn the compelling story of its life.

Victorian Christmas Traditions The first Victorian mince pies were
made of meat (a recipe that dates from Tudor times), but the mince pies made later in the 19th century didn’t contain meat and were pretty much like the ones we enjoy today.

Victorian Christmas Traditions
Holly was more popular than mistletoe for various reasons, the most important being price. Holly cost less than half the price of mistletoe, and there was more of it. Holly can be grown in any hedge, while mistletoe grows only in the branches of specific trees, such as apple and hawthorn. Thus, mistletoe was frequently seen as the purchase of the wealthy classes or those who hosted parties. As such, it became something of a status symbol to have some in your house. A few weeks before Christmas, street vendors often scrounged the neighborhoods of London for holly. It was a precarious trade, however, since vendors often had to trespass onto private grounds and land to obtain these festive branches. If caught by the master of the house or its servants, the vendor was lucky to have only the holly taken away from him. To obtain mistletoe, vendors had to trespass orchards and often faced danger from dogs, traps and spring guns. Thus, they scrounged for mistletoe much more rarely. 27

Victorian Christmas Traditions
The Victorians were extremely fond of entertainment and parlor games, and there was no better time for that than Christmas. Parlor games were entertaining, helped pass the time, and cheered everyone up during times when there was little else to do. At times, however, these games were downright dangerous and reckless. Take snapdragon, for example. During this game, a bunch of raisins were piled into a bowl with rum and then the rum was set on fire. The task was to snatch the raisins out of the bowl and eat them while they were still ablaze.

Victorian Christmas Traditions
During the Victorian era, oysters were plentiful and cheap. Small oysters were often sold as fast food on the streets, as well as pickled to keep for later. Bigger oysters were either put in stews and pies or eaten on their own. Oysters were also frequently consumed in public houses and went nicely with a pint of stout beer. Knowing this, it comes as no surprise that, in this era, the demand for oysters, which were also known as “the poor man’s protein,” was high. For those who could not afford any other meat, it was oysters and not turkey that was most often the centerpiece of the Christmas dinner. 30

Victorian Christmas Traditions
Wassail punch was a popular winter drink made from a mixture of fruit, cider and spices. Victorians served it to carolers who went from house to house singing Christmas carols and hymns. After all the carols were sung, the carolers were invited into the houses of Victorian families to share a sip of wassail from the communal wassail bowl. This tradition of inviting carolers for a sip of wassail began in the Elizabethan era.

Victorian Christmas Traditions
In 1848 a British sweet maker, Tom Smith, came up with a the idea for the Christmas cracker. When he visited Paris, Tom noticed that sugared almonds were sold in twists of paper (bon bons). He used this as inspiration for his Christmas crackers – sweets wrapped in a paper package that snapped apart when you pulled the ends. During the Victorian period, Tom Smith’s idea was adapted and improved. The sweets were often replaced with Christmas paper hats and small gifts were added. The Christmas crackers of the later Victorian era were quite similar to the crackers placed on today’s Christmas dinner tables. 32

Victorian Christmas Traditions
In 1843, Henry Cole asked an artist to make a card for him to send out at Christmas. It featured a family sitting around a dinner table and a Christmas message. The idea seemed to catch on and soon many wealthy Victorian families were sending out their own cards. Victorian children were encouraged to make their own cards and there is even evidence that Queen Victoria had her own children do this. The first printed Christmas cards were very expensive to manufacture, but the price went down dramatically during the Victorian period. This was due to improvements in color printing technology and the new halfpenny postage rate. In 1880 over 11 million Christmas cards were printed!

Victorian Christmas Traditions
At the beginning of the Victorian period, families often gave and received presents to celebrate the New Year. But, as the importance of Christmas as a family celebration grew, the gift-giving was moved to Christmas. The first Victorian Christmas presents were fairly small – gifts such as fruits, nuts, sweets and handmade items were hung from the branches of the Christmas tree. The size and expense of the gifts steadily increased. Victorians started to buy gifts from shops and they were often too big to hang from the tree. By the end of the Victorian era, many families had taken to leaving Christmas gifts under the tree. 36

Victorian Christmas Traditions
While Charles Dickens did not invent the Victorian Christmas, his book A Christmas Carol is credited with helping to popularize and spread the traditions of the festival. Its themes of family, charity, goodwill, peace and happiness encapsulate the spirit of the Victorian Christmas, and are very much a part of the Christmas we celebrate today.

Victorian Christmas Traditions
The roast turkey also has its beginnings in Victorian Britain. Previously other forms of roasted meat such as beef and goose were the centerpiece of the Christmas dinner. The turkey was added to this by the more wealthy sections of the community in the 19th century, but its perfect size for a middle class family gathering meant it became the dominant dish by the beginning of the 20th century.

Victorian Christmas Traditions
Many people think that Prince Albert (Queen Victoria’s husband) was responsible for shaping how Christmas was celebrated by British Victorian families. He was born in Germany, where evergreen trees were traditionally brought into the home at Christmas time and decorated (with candles, sweets and fruit). In 1848, the royal family were pictured celebrating Christmas around a decorated tree, and the fashion for Christmas trees spread very quickly from this point on. 44

Victorian Christmas Traditions
Before the middle of the 19th century, the kissing bough was the primary piece of decorative greenery in the Victorian home for the holidays. A kissing bough, sometimes called a kissing ball, is a double hoop of evergreen boughs, holly, ivy, apples, pears, ribbons, lighted candles, and other ornaments with streamers going up to a central point and a sprig of mistletoe hung from its center. Victorian Christmas traditions dictate that any woman who wanders under the kissing bough has to allow herself to be kissed.

Victorian Christmas Traditions
A photo of Queen Victoria, who was quite the trendsetter in her day, near a bedecked Christmas tree with her family sparked a tree-trimming frenzy in Victorian households. The German custom of tabletop Christmas trees was taken to new heights by Victorians who placed them on the floor in their homes. They adorned their beloved evergreens with flickering candles, fancy paper Santas, glistening angels, chocolate wreaths, gilded apples, and silver cornucopias holding treats decorated with tinsel.

Victorian Christmas Traditions
In the days before radio, television and movies, entertainment was spun closer to home. In fact, the Victorian parlor where a piano or organ often stood was center stage for Christmas Day entertainment. Family members and visiting friends would recite poems, read lively stories, offer songs, or pick up an instrument for a musical solo. Children would practice for weeks in preparation. Parlor games were also played including charades and the reenactment of historical events. All the while, a bowl of wassail or mulled spiced cider was on hand for refreshment.

This boat helps to illuminate life-saving history at the Jersey Shore and is an integral part of U.S. Lifesaving Service and U.S. Coast Guard history. Circa late 1800s-1930s, the Monomoys are 26 feet long and most weigh more than 2,000 lbs. The design developed from boats used to hunt whales. Come learn more at your next Lighthouse visit! The boat is a restoration project of the Cape May Maritime and Educational Center and will be on long-term display here, in association with Cape May MAC 61

‘Twas the night before Christmas on Washington Street The office was closed up, all tidy and neat. All of MAC’s staffers were safe in their homes When they noticed a text coming in on their phones. It was from the Director, who wrote to his staff: “We forgot something which would be a real gaffe. “2020’s been rough, for staff and for guests, We changed all our tours, and all did our best. “But looking back I soon discovered There is still something important that we haven’t covered. “We worked extra hard to put out “This Week in Cape May” “But we haven’t thanked the people who helped make it that way. “To our advertisers,” we say, “we couldn’t do it without you; And to our loyal readers, we appreciate you, too!” And so he exclaimed as he turned off his cell, Merry Christmas to all, and we wish you all well!

Victorian Christmas Traditions
While carols were not new to the Victorians, it was a tradition that they actively revived and popularized. The Victorians considered carols to be a delightful form of musical entertainment, and a pleasure well worth cultivating. Old words were put to new tunes and the first significant collection of carols was published in 1833 for all to enjoy. 68

Victorian Christmas Traditions
The English tradition of the wassail bowl and serving plum pudding transitioned to America in many areas. The plum pudding held charms holding symbolism for the person who ended up with that particular piece of dessert–a ring for marriage, a coin for wealth, and a silver thimble for a happy yet single life. Being a German delicacy at the time, carp was often enjoyed by Victorian families served on special china sets decorated with fish imagery during Christmas feasts, as well. Many American homes also enjoyed turkey, ham, jams, jellies, pickles and several types of potatoes along with oyster dressing, pudding, and stew. Not so different than some of the items we feast on during the holiday season today.

A hidden treasure in the heart of Cape May City Located next to Cape May City Hall, the Colonial House (c 1730), was originally a tavern and the family home of Revolutionary War Patriot Memucan Hughes. The front room features a tavern room. Other rooms open to the public in this unsung survivor from Cape Island’s very beginning depict a colonial era cooking/eating room. A fine example of vernacular architecture and colonial living back in the days.

Victorian Christmas Traditions
Candles were a firm fixture of the Victorian Christmas and were used in different variants. In many households, an advent wreath would be displayed in the run-up to Christmas. The four candles and the evergreen wreath symbolise belief, good fortune, love and peace. Lighting the candles is supposed to show that the birth of Christ brings light into the world. It was also customary to display a candle in the window during the twelve days of the Christmas festivities. It was intended as a sign to travellers that food and shelter was available in this house. Merchants also liked to give their customers candles. They were indispensible and a vital part of every Victorian Christmas tree, often made by hand and carefully placed on each branch.

Victorian Christmas Traditions
The Victorian parlor where a piano or organ often stood was center stage for Christmas Day entertainment. 76

Loving...Inclusive...Affirming
On Dec 13th at 4 pm in our sanctuary, our Joyful Ringers Bell Choir will hold a concert of Advent and Christmas music, open to the public. Space is limited due to social distancing concerns, so please call or email the church to reserve your spot! And on Dec 24th, we will have our traditional Christmas Eve Service at 11 pm. Please let us know by phone or email if you plan to attend! Our Sunday morning worship services currently include: · 9 am traditional worship service in the sanctuary, complete with music from our talented organist and at least monthly appearances of our bell choir. · 11 am celebration worship service features our amazing Jazz Ensemble. Out of concern for everyone’s health, participants are required to wear a mask. Our sanctuary provides plenty of room for people to spread out, we will not be singing together or passing anything from hand to hand, and we disinfect before each service. Times change and we may need to adjust our plans, so for a schedule of sanctuary worship on any particular Sunday, please check our website (firstpresbycapemay.com) or our Facebook page. You can also find us on Instagram and Youtube, send us an email, or give us a call. As always, we are praying for you!

Retired now and love to travel, especially to historic places and they already love Cape May. Always looking for things to do to keep the grandkids busy (and tire them out!) Has really gotten into ghosts, and there are plenty of “spirited” things to do at MAC’s historic sites. Thinks she should have been born in Victorian times! What better place for her to visit than Cape May? What teacher doesn’t like visiting historic places that are entertaining, too, and getting some ideas to inspire the students?
No matter who you’re shopping for, MAC membership is always a perfect fit! Visit our website today! www.capemaymac.org/support/membership/ 105
