Victorian Christmas Traditions

Perhaps one of the most popular Victorian Christmas traditions that is still observed today is the sending of Christmas cards. The practice of sending printed Christmas cards was a modification of the then customary writing of greetings by English children to their parents. The printed cards enjoyed huge success and later on became a contagious practice that spread from England to the rest of the UK then to the rest of the world. More than a century later, we still send Christmas cards by the truckload to destinations around the globe. 26

Victorian Christmas Traditions

The roast turkey also has its beginnings in Victorian Britain. Previously other forms of roasted meat such as beef and goose were the centerpiece of the Christmas dinner. The turkey was added to this by the more wealthy sections of the community in the 19th century, but its perfect size for a middle class family gathering meant it became the dominant dish by the beginning of the 20th century. 28

Before the middle of the 19th century, the kissing bough was the primary piece of decorative greenery in the Victorian home for the holidays. A kissing bough, sometimes called a kissing ball, is a double hoop of evergreen boughs, holly, ivy, apples, pears, ribbons, lighted candles, and other ornaments with streamers going up to a central point and a sprig of mistletoe hung from its center. Victorian Christmas traditions dictate that any woman who wanders under the kissing bough has to allow herself to be kissed. 30

Victorian Christmas Traditions

The next time you exchange gifts with friends and family, remember that this traditional Christmas practice was started during the Victorian era. During the reign of Queen Victoria, the middle class people started making hand-made toys that were then given to children for free on Christmas Day. 32

Victorian Christmas Traditions

In addition to decorating a handsome Christmas tree, Victorians also adorned the sideboard, mantle, banisters, and most any other wooden surface available with rope upon rope of evergreen garland. Fresh mistletoe made its way into town as well, and hung in bountiful balls around the home. The olden tradition of warming the hearth with a specially cut Yule log continued on to foster continued good health and prosperity. 40

Hands One regular crime committed in the Victorian era was the abducof children for their clothes. Well-dressed youth would be capoff my tion tured, stripped, and left running home in their underwear. This was hat one of the reasons chaperones were often employed. 42

Victorian Christmas Traditions

In the days before radio, television and movies, entertainment was spun closer to home. In fact, the Victorian parlor where a piano or organ often stood was center stage for Christmas Day entertainment. Family members and visiting friends would recite poems, read lively stories, offer songs, or pick up an instrument for a musical solo. Children would practice for weeks in preparation. Parlor games were also played including charades and the reenactment of historical events. All the while, a bowl of wassail or mulled spiced cider was on hand for refreshment.

GREATER CAPE MAY HISTORICAL SOCIETY

COLONIAL

HOUSE Museum

A hidden treasure in the heart of Cape May City Located next to Cape May City Hall, the Colonial House (c 1730), was originally a tavern and the family home of Revolutionary War Patriot Memucan Hughes. The front room features a tavern room. Other rooms open to the public in this unsung survivor from Cape Island’s very beginning depict a colonial era cooking/eating room. A fine example of vernacular architecture and colonial living back in the days.

‘Twas the night before Christmas on Washington Street The office was closed up, all tidy and neat. All of MAC’s staffers were snug in their homes The last thing on their minds was writing a poem. Then the Director called up, even raising his voice “Sorry to be a bother,” he said, “but I just had no choice. “We did all the tours, but then I discovered There is still something important that we haven’t covered. “We work hard to print our great “This Week in Cape May” But we haven’t thanked the people who help make it that way. “To our advertisers,” we say, “we couldn’t do it without you; And to our loyal readers, we appreciate you, too!” And so he exclaimed as he turned off his cell, Merry Christmas to all, and we wish you all well!

Merry Christmas & Happy New Year from all of us at MAC 71

Victorian Christmas Traditions

Women’s magazines during the late 1800s encouraged making holiday gifts rather than buying them ready made. According to Joy to the World, in 1890 editor Emma Hopper wrote: “An article one makes is certainly more complimentary than one bought, for we weave with every stitch sweet wishes for the recipient.” Homemade gift suggestions included knitted mittens, embroidered bed slippers and handkerchiefs, stenciled lampshades, hand-painted button boxes and perhaps a hand-stitched black apron for the lady in mourning on a Victorian gift list.

50 Years of

MAC

MAC

The 50-year journey

of the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts & Humanities (MAC) began in 1970 when a small group of dedicated neighbors joined together to save the 1879 Emlen Physick Estate from the wrecker’s ball. Over the years, the organization’s efforts have continued, restoring and opening both the Cape May Lighthouse and the World War II Lookout Tower. Those years also included thousands of special events and tours, all of which contributed to make MAC Cape May’s leader in heritage tourism, educational outreach, historic preservation and cultural enrichment.

The German husband of Queen Victoria, Prince Albert, brought and introduced the Christmas tree from Germany to the United Kingdom in the 1840s. From Windsor castle, the tree’s popularity spread rapidly, becoming even more popular in the US than it ever was in England.

Dickens Christmas Sunday-Tuesday, Dec. 8-10

Welcome friends, to Cape May’s 35th annual Dickens Christmas Extravaganza! Cape May is the perfect place to celebrate Dickens and the holidays, as it is transformed into a Victorian Christmas Village during this season. Immerse yourself in the world of Dickens through lectures and performances.

SUNDAY, DEC. 8

7:30PM: Dr. Elliot Engel: Master of Mayberry: The Miraculous Life of Andy Griffith While it is true that he was a brilliant movie and Broadway stage actor, Andy Griffith is a Hollywood immortal because of THE ANDY GRIFFITH SHOW television show which ran from 1960 to 1968. Professor Engel not only analyzes Andy’s astonishing early life which led to his television triumph, but he also reveals little-known fascinating facts about the show’s production and its enduring and endearing fame.

MONDAY, DEC. 9

9AM: Dr. Elliot Engel: Beyond The Muddy Cloak: The Brilliance Of Sir Walter Raleigh Dr. Engel reveals the fascinating life of this author-explorer-courtier who deserves to be celebrated for far more than his muddy cape. Sadly, he’s been forgotten today as one of the great writers of love poetry and as a brilliant entrepreneur. But Professor Engel certainly hasn’t forgotten, and, using anecdotes, analysis, and large doses of humor, he will make this remarkable historical figure live once again. 10:30AM: Dr. Elliot Engel: Defining Dr. Samuel Johnson Although compiling the first and greatest dictionary of our language was Johnson’s immortal accomplishment, his life was an astonishing tribute to overcoming innumerable obstacles through pure genius. Dr. Engel, using biography, anecdotes, and large doses of humor, reveals the triumphs and tragedies of this remarkable 18th century giant. 12Noon: Lunch on your own 1PM-3PM: Holiday Inns Tour Get into the Christmas spirit as you tour three of Cape May’s festively decorated Bed & Breakfast Inns and private homes. Maps will be provided.

Monday evening is a free evening for you. MAC offers evening tours. Tickets can be purchased at the Washington Street Mall Information Booth. 82

MAC

TUESDAY, DEC. 10

10AM: Ellie Dunn: Dickens’ Christmas Stories Dickens’ most well-known Christmas story may be A Christmas Carol but it is by no means his only tale of Christmas redemption. Ellie Dunn, member of the Philadelphia Dickens Fellowship, discusses five stories published in periodicals by Dickens between 1843 and 1848. 11AM: Melissa Palmer: Dickens Goes to the Movies A tribute to the Christmas Carol and all the various and sundry versions that have been recorded on film, the famous and the obscure. Learn how the films reflect on the times in which they were produced and the audiences for which they were made. 12Noon: Lunch on your own 2PM: Rich Chiemingo: Charles Dickens and Music, Part 2 Musical references abound in Dickens’ 15 novels- little wonder since he loved songs and sang them well. This talk will include numerous readings from the stories and musical examples. 7PM: Dickens Feast Join your fellow Dickensians at Union Park Dining Room in the Hotel Macomber, 727 Beach Ave. Guests can choose from several entrée selections. Coffee, tea and Iced Tea included. Local wines available by the bottle. Open only to full package participants.

Lectures held at Cape May Stage’s Robert Shackleton Playhouse, Lafayette & Bank Sts. Individual tickets for lectures are available at $15 per lecture. Admission to the complete Dickens Christmas Extravaganza is $175 per person and includes all lectures, performances & tours, plus the Gala Dickens Feast Tuesday evening. Complete packages with accommodations are also available from participating inns For more information or to order tickets call 609-884-5404 Event co-sponsored by the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts & Humanities (MAC) and the Philadelphia Chapter of the Dickens World Fellowship

Christmas at the Fairmount Park Houses Friday, December 13: 8am-5pm

Join the Friends for a trip to Philadelphia to see two of the Fairmount Park Houses in their holiday finery Historic Strawberry Mansion is the largest of the seven historic Fairmount Park Houses. Formerly known as “Summerville,” it was built in 1789 by Judge William Lewis, a well-known lawyer and abolitionist, as a summer home along the Schuylkill River. In 1825, its second owner, Judge Joseph Hemphill, added the first of two Greek Revival style wings to the home. The structure of the house remains largely unchanged to this day, and has become one of the most celebrated historic houses in Philadelphia. Interpreted in both the Federal and Empire periods in which the house was built and expanded, the mansion houses antiques, fine art, and collectibles from the 18th and 19th century, including a noted collection of dolls from the High Street Exhibit of the Sesquicentennial of 1926. The second home is Laurel Hill. Samuel and Rebecca Shoemaker built this two-story Georgian home on land Rebecca inherited from her first husband. The center of the house was built around 1767 and in early 1800, a one-story addition was added on the south side. The octagonal addition on the north side is Federal in style and was added in 1846. Dr. Philip Syng Physick, one of Philadelphia’s most noted surgeons, agreed to buy Laurel Hill from Rebecca’s son, William Rawle. Dr. Physick was known as the Father of American surgery for his successes in stomach surgery and renowned clinical teaching and is the grandfather of Cape May’s Dr. Emlen Physick. Portraits of former occupants hang in the house which is furnished in the popular styles of the late 18th century. The furniture includes an 18th century Philadelphia Chippendale mahogany highboy, a valuable Rawle family heirloom.

After our tour, we’ll enjoy lunch at the Market Tavern, an authentic Irish pub nestled in the heart of University City at 30th and Market Street in Philadelphia, known for its Irish hospitality and lively atmosphere. Lunch choices include: Chicken Caesar Salad, Grilled Vegetable Wrap, Junior Club Sandwich or Shepherd’s Pie. The motorcoach will leave the Bayshore Mall (Big Lots end) at 8am and return about 5pm

Admission is $85 before December 1      After December 1, the price is $90

VICTORIAN CHRISTMAS No era in history has influenced the way in which we celebrate Christmas, quite as much as the Victorians. Before Victoria’s reign started in 1837, nobody in Britain had heard of Santa Claus or Christmas Crackers. No Christmas cards were sent and most people did not have holidays from work. The wealth and technologies generated by the industrial revolution of the Victorian era changed the face of Christmas forever. Sentimental do-gooders like Charles Dickens wrote books like “A Christmas Carol”, published in 1843, which actually encouraged rich Victorians to redistribute their wealth by giving money and gifts to the poor – Humbug! These radical middle class ideals eventually spread to the notquite-so-poor as well. The wealth generated by the new factories and industries of the Victorian age allowed middle class families in England and Wales to take time off work and celebrate over two days, Christmas Day and Boxing Day. Boxing Day, December 26th, earned its name as the day servants and working people opened the boxes in which they had collected gifts of money from the “rich folk.” Those new fangled inventions, the railways, allowed the country folk who had moved into the towns and cities in search of work to return home for a family Christmas. At the start of Victoria’s reign, children’s toys tended to be handmade and hence expensive, generally restricting availability to the rich. With factories, however, came mass production, which brought with it games, dolls, books and clockwork toys all at a more affordable price, at least to the middle class. In a “poor child’s” Christmas stocking, which first became popular from around 1870, only an apple, orange and a few nuts could be found. Normally associated with the bringer

of the above gifts, is Father Christmas or Santa Claus. The two are in fact two entirely separate stories. Father Christmas was originally part of an old English midwinter festival, normally dressed in green, a sign of the returning spring. The stories of St. Nicholas (Sinter Klaas in Holland) came via Dutch settlers to America in the 17th Century. Sinter Klass became known in Britain as Santa Claus and with him came his unique gift and toy distribution system – reindeer and sleigh. Turkeys had been brought to Britain from America years before Victorian times. When Victoria first came to the throne however, both chicken and turkey were too expensive for most people to enjoy. In northern England, roast beef was the traditional fare for Christmas dinner while in London and the south, goose was favorite. Many poor people made do with rabbit. On the other hand, the Christmas Day menu for Queen Victoria and family in 1840 included both beef and, of course, a royal roast swan or two. By the end of the century most people feasted on turkey for their Christmas dinner. Queen Victoria’s German husband Prince Albert helped to make the Christmas tree as popular in Britain as they where in his native Germany, when he brought one to Windsor Castle in the 1840’s. Christmas Crackers were invented by Tom Smith, a London sweet maker, in 1846. The original idea was to wrap his sweets in a twist of fancy coloured paper, but this developed and sold much better when he added love notes, paper hats, small toys and made them go off BANG!
