Curious collections
11am
In the Victorian era, collecting was a major part of people’s lives. Collections often included “curiosities” such as zoological, botanical or geological finds. Shrunken heads, seashells, antique weapons and clockworks were commonly collected items. These collections would be displayed in a large “cabinet of curiosities.” If you wanted to expand your collection? Just go to the curiosity shop. 16

Stay healthy
In a time when one in four patients died after surgery, you were very lucky in Victorian times to have a good doctor with a clean operating theatre. There was no anesthesia, no painkillers for after, and no electric equipment to reduce the duration of an operation. Victorian surgery wasn’t just creepy, it was outright horrific. 17

It was the Victorians who first invented afternoon tea. This was because the evening meal was eaten later than in previous periods and people found they needed a light meal in the late afternoon. The evening meal was eaten around 8 or even 9 p.m. 18

Down the aisle
The accepted career for women in the Victorian era was marriage. To get ready for courtship and marriage a girl was groomed like a racehorse. In addition to being able to sing, play an instrument and speak a little French or Italian, the qualities a young Victorian gentlewoman needed were to be innocent, virtuous, biddable, dutiful and be ignorant of intellectual opinion. Yeah, right. 26

The Iconic Cape May Lighthouse: From the pages of “The First Resort”
OPEN DAILY THROUGH NOV. 3: SEE CALENDAR FOR TIMES • FREE ADMISSION
Illuminating the darkness over the Atlantic Ocean and Delaware Bay for 160 years, Cape May’s lighthouse is the third beacon to guide mariners through the tumultuous waters at the confluence of the ocean and bay. Memories and historic images abound in this exhibit curated by Ben Miller, from the keepers who dedicated their lives to maintaining the light, the MAC preservationists who restored it and all those who’ve relied upon it for more than a century and a half. Working in the coal mines
Working children were common in the Victorian era in England, largely because poor families didn’t earn enough for food without it. One job that had high demand for children was work in the coal mines. Children made excellent coal miners because they could maneuver in tight spaces, and they required far less pay than adult workers. The children would work for 12 to 18 hours in air saturated with coal dust, and there was constant danger. Other jobs included chimney sweeping (where children could start working as young as 3) and working in factories or textile mills. In 1891, the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children was formed, offering some protection to child laborers. 32

Talking to dead people
On top of believing in aliens, Victorians were also strong believers in hypnotism, divination, and spiritualism. Events were attendees could be hypnotized, speak to the dead, or have their futures predicted were extremely popular, and hucksters would make huge money off of gullible Victorians.

NEW IN 2019! For the Victorians, dining was more than just the food they ate; its presentation was just as important -- if not more -- than its taste. Join MAC’s Curator Gail Capehart and see a Powerpoint presentation at the Physick House on how Victorians would get their table ready for a meal. Participants will then move the discussion to the formal Dining Room where Gail will demonstrate the setting of the Victorian table. After the demonstration, guests will enjoy an afternoon tea in the Carriage House Café & Tearoom. Dangerous games
Parlor games were extremely popular with Victorians, especially at Christmastime. One game was called “Snapdragon,” during which a bunch of raisins were put into a bowl with rum and set on fire. The object of the game was to get the raisins out of the bowl and eat them while they were still on fire. Some games from that era which were simpler and safer are still played today, like charades, and an early version of musical chairs. 37

HOUSE Museum
A hidden treasure in the heart of Cape May City Located next to Cape May City Hall, the Colonial House (c 1730), was originally a tavern and the family home of Revolutionary War Patriot Memucan Hughes. The front room features a tavern room. Other rooms open to the public in this unsung survivor from Cape Island’s very beginning depict a colonial era cooking/eating room. A fine example of vernacular architecture and colonial living back in the days.

Seen and not heard
The expression “children should be seen and not heard” originated in the Victorian era, and referred to the way that the children of affluent or upper-class families were expected to behave. Upper class children were rarely in contact with their parents, and were mostly raised by a nanny. They were expected to be proper and polite, and they were not allowed to be loud. 45

Charcoal and honey
Since toothpaste didn’t exist in the Victorian Era, people would clean their teeth with homemade “dentifrice”—a French word for toothpaste. One of the recipes was a mixture of charcoal and honey, which actually would make an amazing face mask. They were just a little mixed up! 52

Say cheese
In the Victorian era, photography was young and extremely costly. When a loved one died, their relatives would sometimes have a photograph taken of the corpse in a pose – oftentimes with other members of the family. For the vast majority of Victorians, this was the only time they would be photographed. In these post-mortem photographs, the effect of life was sometimes enhanced by either propping the subject’s eyes open or painting pupils onto the photographic print, and many early images have a rosy tint added to the cheeks of the corpse. Adults were more commonly posed in chairs or even braced on specially-designed frames. 60

Bucket Brigade was establishedin 2017 by twin brothers, Karl and Kurt Hughes, firefighters from Cape May County, NJ. They serve up quality, handcrafted ales, pilsners, and lagers in a fun, exciting place located just minutes off Stone Harbor Boulevard and the Garden State Parkway at Exit 10. This fire service-themed venue pays homage to all public service and military members in a comfortable tasting room surrounded by memorabilia. You can also purchase growlers to go.
