3rd Annual Lessons of History Distinguished Lecture Series

DAVID O. STEWART

“The Summer of 1787: The Men Who Invented the Constitution”

Did you ever wonder where Washington’s political gridlock came from? Master storyteller David O. Stewart delivers this lecture, based on his award-winning book, exploring the conflicts and hard bargaining that invented a government to meet the crises of the not-quite-united states; huge debts, hostile neighbors, armed rebellion, and the very real prospect of dissolving into three nations or more. Closeted together in a single room through a sultry Philadelphia summer, the delegates hammered out a government charter that embodied the best of America’s dreams, and the worst of America’s realities. The tough-minded, sometimes grimy compromises of that summer set a model for America’s political culture that has powerful resonance for today’s gridlocked political system.

Sunday, Oct. 12: 4pm

Cape Island Baptist Church, 115 Gurney St. ABOUT THE SPEAKER: David O. Stewart graduated from Yale Law School and was law clerk to United States Supreme Court Associate Justice Lewis F. Powell, Jr. After practicing law for many years, he began to write history too. His first book, The Summer of 1787: The Men Who Invented the Constitution, was a Washington Post bestseller and won the Washington Writing Award as Best Book of 2007.

Tickets: $30 $50 for Lecture and Meet the Speaker Reception at the Queen Victoria B&B Presented by the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts & Humanities (MAC) For more information, call 609-884-5404 or 800-275-4278 or visit www.capemaymac.org

The Cape May Lighthouse was originally staffed by keepers who worked for the U.S. Lighthouse Service. Cape May’s lighthouse generally had one head keeper and two assistants. They carried oil to the top of the tower every day to power the light, and kept the lens apparatus clean and in working order. Keepers’ pay averaged $600 a year around the turn of the 20th century. 17

Watch what you say

The completion of the first telephone system in the spring of 1895 certainly made things easier. With a manager and two operators, the exchange was open from 6 a.m. to midnight, with a pay station in West Cape May and another at Schellenger’s Landing. It cost 10 cents to use the phone. Phones could be put in private homes for $16 per year, and in business places for $30 per year. Of course, if a subscriber used profane language while speaking on the phone, it would be removed immediately. 40

The fires that shaped Cape May From the beginning, fire has shaped Cape May more than any other force, natural or manmade. Even today, fire continues to be the bane of Cape May, a National Historic Landmark filled with hundreds of restored Victorian buildings. Exhibit curator Ben Miller, author of Exit Zero’s best-selling book, The First Resort, takes visitors on a journey through Cape May’s fiery past in this must-see exhibit that includes an authentic 1924 Model T fire truck. The citizens of Cape May during the 1890s liked their peaceful existence. An ordinance of 1897 stated that no driver, runner or conductor of a coach, omnibus or carriage of any hotel or boarding house was permitted to “halloo, shout or call out” the names of these places upon their arrival of train at the railroad depot. 45

The Lighthouse was staffed by keepers who worked for the U.S. Lighthouse Service. Cape May’s lighthouse generally had one head keeper and two assistants. They carried the oil to the top of the tower every day to power the light, and kept the lens apparatus clean and in working order. Keepers’ pay averaged $600 a year around the turn of the 20th century. 52

Springs and seaside resorts began to attract large numbers of visitors during the 1820s and 1830s when doctors began endorsing the healing affects of water. Most who visited water sites were ill, infirm, or traveling with someone who was. Still others were healthy and went to ward off illness. Realizing the potential profit in keeping the healthy happy, resort proprietors soon began offering amusements like bowling, billiards, and concerts. 57

CRAIG McMANUS

on the ghosts of Cape May “Our existence and a ghost’s existence can be much more entwined than we think—and we may never even realize it. The living and the dead move within the same space, but seldom collide. When I work as a Medium, I have to move my consciousness into the ghost realm, the plane where ghosts exist, in order to read their thoughts.”

Walk the streets with the Ghost Writer

Dare to walk the haunted streets of Victorian Cape May on A Walk with the Ghost Writer. Your guide, psychic medium and ghost writer Craig McManus, will point out the houses where he has sensed paranormal activity (which may

or may not manifest itself). Friday, Oct. 24 at 6pm and Saturday, Oct. 25 at 6pm and 9pm. Tickets are $25 per person and space is limited. For more information, call 609-884-5404 or 800-275-4278 or visit www.capemaymac.org

FRIDAYS, OCT. 17 & 24 AND SATURDAYS, OCT. 18-NOV. 1: 7PM-10PM

PHANTOMS OF THE PHYSICK ESTATE: GHOSTS & GUIDES SATURDAYS, OCT. 18-NOV. 1: 1PM-4PM

What’s for dinner?

Healthy Teeth Make Beautiful

Smiles!

Victorians valued good cooking and food. However, there were great differences between what the rich and poorer people ate.   The unemployed, and others with little money, survived on little more than potato parings, rotten vegetable refuse and scraps. Those on a slightly higher wage could occasionally purchase some bacon, cheese or sausage and workers in better-paid jobs had more choice and more wholesome food.    Meal time provided the opportunity for the rich to display their wealth... through rich foods, use of fine cutlery, china and servants. French cuisine was in fashion, with as many as 20 dishes served at the same time in two great courses.   Tastes changed during the period and, by the 1860s, dishes were being placed on the sideboard and then served, one after another, by footmen. This was known as serving a meal ‘a la russe.’
