Welcome to Cape May MAC! After a couple weeks of keeping abreast of the developments with the Delta Variant of COVID and discussions with various staff members, including those who interact with the public regularly as well as our guests, Cape May MAC has decided to revise our mask-wearing policy as follows: In an abundance of caution for our guests and staff, as of Monday, Aug. 23, 2021, Cape May MAC requires masks be worn by all in the following indoor locations:
• Physick House Museum Tours • Carriage House Museum Shop (at the Emlen Physick Estate) • Oil House Museum Shop (at the Cape May Lighthouse) Masks have always been required on all our trolley tours in accordance with New Jersey public transportation mandates and will continue to be until further notice. Please check capemaymac.org/covid-19-precautions/ for updates to this policy since this publication of This Week In Cape May runs through Nov. 18, 2021. Thank you for your continued cooperation, and have a safe, enjoyable time in the Nation’s Oldest Seaside Resort. Jody Alessandrine, Director/CEO

This Old House PRESERVATION OF THE PHYSICK ESTATE Each year, our tour of the Physick House Museum highlights a particular aspect of Victorian life and culture. In honor of Cape May MAC’s recent 50th anniversary, our tours will focus on the Physick House itself. It is fitting, since this is where Cape May MAC began, in its efforts to save the house from the wrecking ball. You will learn of the mansion’s years as a grand residence for the Physick family, to its tragic decline and near demolition and, finally, to its rise as a fully-restored historic landmark. Come join us to learn the compelling story of its life.

One regular crime committed in the Victorian era was the abduction of children for their clothes. Well-dressed youth would be captured, stripped, and left running home in their underwear. This was one of the reasons chaperones were often employed.

50 Years of
MAC
The 50-year journey of the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts & Humanities (MAC) began in 1970 when a small group of dedicated neighbors joined together to save the 1879 Emlen Physick Estate from the wrecker’s ball. Over the years, the organization’s efforts have continued, restoring and opening both the Cape May Lighthouse and the World War II Lookout Tower. Those years also included thousands of special events and tours, all of which contributed to make Cape May MAC Cape May’s leader in heritage tourism, educational outreach, historic preservation and cultural enrichment.
Join us as we commemorate those 50 years in words and photos at our

LESSONS OF HISTORY: D ISTINGUISHED L ECTURE S ERIES
GIVE ‘EM HELL, HARRY! The life and presidency of Harry S. Truman as portrayed by his grandson Clifton Truman Daniel
SUNDAY, OCT. 10, 2021: 5pm Cape May Convention Hall, 714 Beach Ave.
Written by Samuel Gallu, this faithful and humorous portrayal of President Harry S. Truman’s life and presidency spans his childhood, political apprenticeship as a judge in Jackson County, MO, years in the U.S. Senate and momentous two terms as President. Actor James Whitmore originated the role in 1975. Clifton Truman Daniel took up the mantle in October 2017, marking the first time in history that a U.S. President was portrayed onstage by a direct descendant, in this case, his oldest grandson. Tickets are limited. Advance reservations strongly recommended
$40 (Adults); $15 (Teachers & Students) For more information, call 609-884-5404 or visit www.capemaymac.org

Don’t drink the water
By 1860, England’s Thames River was full of the raw fecal matter and sewage that was being dumped into the water on a daily basis. Since the river was also the main source of drinking water for the city, people died by the thousands from dysentery, cholera, and typhoid. Once again, a great excuse to opt for beer. 28

Snack time
It was the Victorians who first invented afternoon tea. This was because the evening meal was eaten later than in previous periods and people found they needed a light meal in the late afternoon. The evening meal was eaten around 8 or even 9 p.m.

Poison me!
In the Victorian era, arsenic wasn’t regarded as a poison in the same way it is today. Women would apply it topically as an agefighting cosmetic, and men would take arsenic pills to get their engines revving. It took many cases of illness and quite a few fatalities before they figured out that arsenic was toxic. 33

Curious collections
In the Victorian era, collecting was a major part of people’s lives. Collections often included “curiosities” such as zoological, botanical or geological finds. Shrunken heads, seashells, antique weapons and clockworks were commonly collected items. These collections would be displayed in a large “cabinet of curiosities.” If you wanted to expand your collection? Just go to the curiosity shop. 39

on the Ghosts of Cape May
“Our existence and a ghost’s existence can be much more entwined than we think—and we may never even realize it. The living and the dead move within the same space, but seldom collide. When I work as a Medium, I have to move my consciousness into the ghost realm, the plane where ghosts exist, in order to read their thoughts.”
