DISTINGUISHED LECTURE SERIES
MAC
D-DAY: WHY IT STILL MATTERS How America’s European war established the United States as a global power
Sunday, Oct. 11: 4pm
Cape Island Baptist Church, 115 Gurney St. D-Day was the climactic battle of the European Theater of World War II. The lecture will explore the ramifications of the Allied victory on June 6, 1944, not only on the course of World War II, but also as the pivotal step in the United States’ rise to global dominance. What if D-Day had failed? What if the Germans had thrown back General Dwight D. Eisenhower’s attempt to establish a lodgment on the European continent? How would the course of the war been different? And what of the post-war world?
Tickets: $30 lecture only, $50 lecture & reception at The Queen Victoria B&B with wine and tapas
Presented by Col. Cole Kingseed, Ph.D., bestselling author and former professor of military history at West Point.

What’s for dinner?
Victorians valued good cooking and food. However, there were great differences between what the rich and poorer people ate. The unemployed, and others with little money, survived on little more than potato parings, rotten vegetable refuse and scraps. Those on a slightly higher wage could occasionally purchase some bacon, cheese or sausage and workers in better-paid jobs had more choice and more wholesome food. Meal time provided the opportunity for the rich to display their wealth... through rich foods, use of fine cutlery, china and servants. French cuisine was in fashion, with as many as 20 dishes served at the same time in two great courses. 18

The Cape May Lighthouse was originally staffed by keepers who worked for the U.S. Lighthouse Service. Cape May’s lighthouse generally had one head keeper and two assistants. They carried oil to the top of the tower every day to power the light, and kept the lens apparatus clean and in working order. Keepers’ pay averaged $600 a year around the turn of the 20th century. 26

During the summer of 1893, the Cape May Wave reported that night time bathing was becoming quite the rage. People felt that bathing at night exceeded the benefits of daytime bathing, without its burning sun and sand. Even bath house operators were revising their hours of operation to accommodate their evening customers.

Dining decorum
Meal times were special occasions in the Victorian home and eating started with making sure that you were properly dressed. While you could dress down slightly for meals at home, any outside dining event that took place after 6 p.m. was automatically a formal occasion. Ladies were expected to wear low-necked gowns with short sleeves and gloves. Married woman opted for satin or silk while the unattached arrived in muslins or chiffon. Men always wore dark broadcloth and “fine linen.” Male guests were each assigned a female guest to escort into the dining room. The host always escorted the highest ranking lady, a newcomer to the area, a new bride, or the wife of a distinguished guest. The hostess was escorted by her husband’s business partner or best friend. 29

The completion of the first telephone system in the spring of 1895 certainly made things easier. With a manager and two operators, the exchange was open from 6 a.m. to midnight, with a pay station in West Cape May and another at Schellenger’s Landing. It cost 10 cents to use the phone. Phones could be put in private homes for $16 per year, and in business places for $30 per year. Of course, if a subscriber used profane language while speaking on the phone, it would be removed immediately. 32

Lighting the night
The first known Cape May Lighthouse was constructed in 1823 with a tower that was 68 feet tall. Its location is now under water due to erosion. In 1847, a second lighthouse was built with a 78-foot tower located directly in front of the present tower just beyond the current shoreline. However, it was poorly constructed and was replaced by the present tower, constructed in 1859. The cost to build the present lighthouse was $40,000, and the original lens probably cost about $15,000. The Cape May Lighthouse was first lighted on Oct. 31, 1859. See Calendar for hours of operation. 34

Victorian etiquette
Here are some typical rules of etiquette in Dr. Physick’s day: Break bread or roll into morsels rather than eating the bread whole. • Gentlemen should be seen and not smelled. They should use but very little perfume, as too much of it is in bad taste. • When introduced to a man, a lady should never offer her hand, merely bow politely and say, “I am happy to make your acquaintance.” • While courting, a gentleman caller might bring only certain gifts such as flowers, candy or a book. A woman could not offer a gentleman any present at all until he had extended one to her, and then something artistic, handmade and inexpensive was permissible. • A gentleman may delicately kiss a lady’s hand, the forehead, or at most, the cheek. 40

The Lighthouse was staffed by keepers who worked for the U.S. Lighthouse Service. Cape May’s lighthouse generally had one head keeper and two assistants. They carried the oil to the top of the tower every day to power the light, and kept the lens apparatus clean and in working order. Keepers’ pay averaged $600 a year around the turn of the 20th century. 46

Springs and seaside resorts began to attract large numbers of visitors during the 1820s and 1830s when doctors began endorsing the healing affects of water. Most who visited water sites were ill, infirm, or traveling with someone who was. Still others were healthy and went to ward off illness. Realizing the potential profit in keeping the healthy happy, resort proprietors soon began offering amusements like bowling, billiards, and concerts. 47

For the Victorians, music provided an escape from the hub-bub of everyday life. The world was a tumultuous place in the late 19th century. Although great advances were being made in all areas of science and industry, there was a high price to pay. The streets were noisy with sounds of industry, the air dirty with soot; Victorians saw music as a way to transcend the clamor around them.

Among the unique spirits reported at the Physick Estate by psychic medium Craig McManus are several of Dr. Physick’s dogs. They have been seen around the house and one romping through the gardens. Apparently, there is some disturbance when the dogs are about, because they were never allowed in the house by Mrs. Ralston. Aunt Emilie, however, had a softer spot for Dr. Physick’s canine companions, and prepared their dinners in the estate’s kitchen, and would let them in the house when Mrs. Ralston was absent. 72

CRAIG McMANUS
on the ghosts of Cape May
“Our existence and a ghost’s existence can be much more entwined than we think—and we may never even realize it. The living and the dead move within the same space, but seldom collide. When I work as a Medium, I have to move my consciousness into the ghost realm, the plane where ghosts exist, in order to read their thoughts.”
Walk the streets with the Ghost Writer
Dare to walk the haunted streets of Victorian Cape May on A Walk with the Ghost Writer. Your guide, psychic medium and ghost writer Craig McManus, will point out the houses where he has sensed paranormal activity (which may
or may not manifest itself). Fridays, Oct. 9 at 9pm & Oct. 23 at 6pm; and Saturday, Oct. 24 at 6pm and 9pm. Tickets are $25 per person and space is limited. For more information, call 609-884-5404 or 800275-4278 or visit www.capemaymac.org.
