THIS WEEK inCAPE MAY
Vol. XLVIII Number 10 SEPT. 11-OCT. 8, 2020
From the Director
While we here at Cape May MAC resumed our tours of the Cape May Lighthouse, Emlen Physick House Museum and World War II Lookout Tower, all remain at a limited capacity and on abbreviated schedules due to the pandemic. We have been adhering to all of the governor’s executive orders, and even placed further limitations to ensure the safety and peace of mind of our guests. While some days we are tracking at 50-percent of budgeted figures or last year’s numbers, suffice it to say that by year’s end, we will be realizing approximately 25-percent of 2020 original, pre-COVID budget, especially considering we were inoperative for a quarter of the year. Much of our 2020 programming has been cancelled, postponed until 2021, or completely revamped-- some include digital rather than in-person offerings. One such program is our Cape May Music Festival (see page 83). And we’ve scheduled some new, exciting and scary Halloween events (capemaymac.org/experience/special-events/halloween-happenings/), as well as a unique Holiday menu of live and digital events to celebrate the season. Stand by for more details on the latter. Cape May MAC is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization. To provide this programming and sustain some degree of normalcy for our patrons, we need you to show how you and yours have been enriched, culturally, by what Cape May MAC has provided throughout our 50-year history. This is so that we can continue to do so not only for you, but for future generations. There has never been a more seminal moment in those 50 years than at present. Of course, donations are most welcome and appreciated; as are ticket purchases now that can be used later for any number of Cape May MAC tours and events. Cape May MAC Memberships make excellent holiday gifts, too, considering all of the complimentary amenities they include (capemaymac.org/support/membership/). Have a safe and enjoyable end of Summer. Welcome to Cape May MAC! We’re happy to welcome you back and hope you enjoy your tour of the Physick Estate, a visit to the Cape May Lighthouse or the World War II Lookout Tower, a trolley tour or our new walking tour. In an abundance of caution, Cape May MAC requires that you do the following: • Keep 6 feet apart from anyone not in your party. • Wear a mask at all times while participating in our tours. We will be asking all visitors the following questions upon check-in: • Are you experiencing flu-like symptoms? • Have you been in contact with anyone infected with COVID-19? • Have you traveled to a high-risk area or country? If you have answered “yes” to any of these questions, we respectfully ask that you do not participate at this time, and return after being asymptomatic for 14 days. If a guest’s temperature is 100.4 or more, we require her/him to take a seat in the shade, and retest in 10 minutes; or, come again at another time. We are requiring the same of our Cape May MAC employees & volunteers. To further ensure your safety, all of our historic sites and our trolleys are getting routine deep cleaning with disinfecting products.
If you have any questions, please call us at 609-884-5404 6

This Old House PRESERVATION OF THE PHYSICK ESTATE Each year, our tour of the Physick House Museum highlights a particular aspect of Victorian life and culture. This year marks Cape May MAC’s 50th Anniversary, and our tours will focus on the Physick House itself. It is fitting, since this is where Cape May MAC began, in its efforts to save the house from the wrecking ball. You will learn of the mansion’s years as a grand residence for the Physick family, to its tragic decline and near demolition and, finally, to its rise as a fully-restored historic landmark. Come join us to learn the compelling story of its life.

In a time when one in four patients died after surgery, you were very lucky in Victorian times to have a good doctor with a clean operating theatre. There was no anesthesia, no painkillers for after, and no electric equipment to reduce the duration of an operation. Victorian surgery wasn’t just creepy, it was outright horrific. 16

Poison me!
3:15pm
In the Victorian era, arsenic wasn’t regarded as a poison in the same way it is today. Women would apply it topically as an agefighting cosmetic, and men would take arsenic pills to get their engines revving. It took many cases of illness and quite a few fatalities before they figured out that arsenic was toxic. 26

LIFE-SAVING BOAT ON DISPLAY AT THE
CAPE MAY LIGHTHOUSE
215 Lighthouse Ave. off Sunset Boulevard Cape May Point State Park OPEN DAILY 10AM-4PM SEE PG. 8
This boat helps to illuminate life-saving history at the Jersey Shore and is an integral part of U.S. Lifesaving Service and U.S. Coast Guard history. Circa late 1800s-1930s, the Monomoys are 26 feet long and most weigh more than 2,000 lbs. The design developed from boats used to hunt whales. Come learn more at your next Lighthouse visit! The boat is a restoration project of the Cape May Maritime and Educational Center and will be on long-term display here, in association with Cape May MAC 31

In the Victorian era, all genders of children would be clothed in frilly white dresses until they reached school age. And the richer a family was, the more bells and whistles (a.k.a. ribbons, bows, lace and buttons) the dresses would have. Both genders would also wear bonnets. 32

50 Years of
MAC
The 50-year journey of the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts & Humanities (MAC) began in 1970 when a small group of dedicated neighbors joined together to save the 1879 Emlen Physick Estate from the wrecker’s ball. Over the years, the organization’s efforts have continued, restoring and opening both the Cape May Lighthouse and the World War II Lookout Tower. Those years also included thousands of special events and tours, all of which contributed to make Cape May MAC Cape May’s leader in heritage tourism, educational outreach, historic preservation and cultural enrichment.

GREATER CAPE MAY HISTORICAL SOCIETY
COLONIAL
HOUSE Museum
A hidden treasure in the heart of Cape May City Located next to Cape May City Hall, the Colonial House (c 1730), was originally a tavern and the family home of Revolutionary War Patriot Memucan Hughes. The front room features a tavern room. Other rooms open to the public in this unsung survivor from Cape Island’s very beginning depict a colonial era cooking/eating room. A fine example of vernacular architecture and colonial living back in the days.
The Colonial House is closed for the 2020 Season Visit our website and Like us on Facebook: Greater Cape May Historical Society

Cape May Presbyterian Church
Loving...Inclusive...Affirming Cape May Presbyterian Church is at the beach and in the sanctuary!
Through September and possibly longer, we will be meeting for a short, sweet, and socially distanced worship service at the beach at 8:30 am. Park at our lot on Decatur Street and Columbia and walk directly to the surf from there—we are just inside the Decatur St. entrance. Please wear a mask! We recommend you bring an umbrella and bottle of water, as well as your own beach chair. It can be quite warm out there! As long as safety allows, we will also be gathering in our beautiful sanctuary at 11 am for another short, sweet, socially distanced service of worship. We have plenty of room for people to spread out, we will not be singing together or passing anything from hand to hand, and we will have wipes available. Times change and we may need to adjust, so please for a schedule of sanctuary worship on any particular Sunday, please check our website (firstpresbycapemay.com) or our Facebook page. You can also find us on Instagram and Youtube, send us an email, or give us a call. As always, we are praying for you!

She had hoped that when she was offered the use of a friend’s home in a remote seaside town, she would have it all to herself. Unfortunately, her friend neglected to mention the fact the house was fully inhabited – by staff, distant family members, and people with whom Helen is fairly certain her friend is not even acquainted. To make matters worse, it seems that the group is conspiring to make her stay so unpleasant that she will be compelled to leave early. However, when things take a turn for the supernatural, Helen finds herself in the center of a mystery she will need help solving. Join us at the Emlen Physick Estate for this immersive theatrical event – and find out if you can solve the mystery of The Gloomy Apparition!
