It was the Victorians who first invented afternoon tea. This was because the evening meal was eaten later than in previous periods and people found they needed a light meal in the late afternoon. The evening meal was eaten around 8 or even 9 p.m. 16

Stay healthy
In a time when one in four patients died after surgery, you were very lucky in Victorian times to have a good doctor with a clean operating theatre. There was no anesthesia, no painkillers for after, and no electric equipment to reduce the duration of an operation. Victorian surgery wasn’t just creepy, it was outright horrific.

Curious collections
In the Victorian era, collecting was a major part of people’s lives. Collections often included “curiosities” such as zoological, botanical or geological finds. Shrunken heads, seashells, antique weapons and clockworks were commonly collected items. These collections would be displayed in a large “cabinet of curiosities.” If you wanted to expand your collection? Just go to the curiosity shop. 20

Swooning Susan
Fainting was common among Victorian women. Corsets made from whalebone, and sometimes even iron or steel, helped women achieve the impossibly tiny waists that were fashionable at the time. A side effect of these binding garments was that circulation would be cut off, and women would have trouble breathing. It was thought that women were prone to fainting from excitement, but really, it was that they would momentarily pass out whenever their heart rates increased as a result of having their midsections bound so tightly. 27

So many women’s activities of the mid and late 19th century served to show that they were middle class. Making artificial flowers was one of these. Both time-consuming and useless, making artificial flowers proved that your husband’s income made it possible for you to do no housework. Along with disabling clothing and countless crafts, flower-making was a visible sign of middle-class-ness. The conventions of the time made women almost literally prisoners in their parlors. 28

The Iconic Cape May Lighthouse: From the pages of “The First Resort” OPEN DAILY: SEE CALENDAR FOR TIMES FREE ADMISSION
Illuminating the darkness over the Atlantic Ocean and Delaware Bay for 160 years, Cape May’s lighthouse is the third beacon to guide mariners through the tumultuous waters at the confluence of the ocean and bay. Memories and historic images abound in this exhibit curated by Ben Miller, from the keepers who dedicated their lives to maintaining the light, the MAC preservationists who restored it and all those who’ve relied upon it for more than a century and a half. Tats strange
In Victorian times, it was common for the nobility and aristocracy to have multiple pieces of artwork tattooed on their bodies. It all started when Queen Victoria’s son, the Prince of Wales, was visiting Jerusalem. He saw someone getting a tattoo and decided to get one of his own. He started a huge trend, and some estimates say that almost 100,000 Londoners got tattoos after news spread about his new tattoo when he returned home. 35

Working in the coal mines
Working children were common in the Victorian era in England, largely because poor families didn’t earn enough for food without it. One job that had high demand for children was work in the coal mines. Children made excellent coal miners because they could maneuver in tight spaces, and they required far less pay than adult workers. The children would work for 12 to 18 hours in air saturated with coal dust, and there was constant danger. Other jobs included chimney sweeping (where children could start working as young as 3) and working in factories or textile mills. In 1891, the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children was formed, offering some protection to child laborers. 38
GREATER CAPE MAY HISTORICAL SOCIETY
COLONIAL
HOUSE Museum
A hidden treasure in the heart of Cape May City Located next to Cape May City Hall, the Colonial House (c 1730), was originally a tavern and the family home of Revolutionary War Patriot Memucan Hughes. The front room features a tavern room. Other rooms open to the public in this unsung survivor from Cape Island’s very beginning depict a colonial era cooking/eating room. A fine example of vernacular architecture and colonial living back in the days.

Busy hands
So many women’s activities of the mid and late 19th century served to show that they were middle class. Making artificial flowers was one of these. Both time-consuming and useless, making artificial flowers proved that your husband’s income made it possible for you to do no housework. Along with disabling clothing and countless crafts, flower-making was a visible sign of middle-class-ness. The conventions of the time made women almost literally prisoners in their parlors. 43

Say cheese
In the Victorian era, photography was young and extremely costly. When a loved one died, their relatives would sometimes have a photograph taken of the corpse in a pose – oftentimes with other members of the family. For the vast majority of Victorians, this was the only time they would be photographed. In these post-mortem photographs, the effect of life was sometimes enhanced by either propping the subject’s eyes open or painting pupils onto the photographic print, and many early images have a rosy tint added to the cheeks of the corpse. Adults were more commonly posed in chairs or even braced on specially-designed frames. 46

It was moved to this site in 1846 by Owen Coachman, a free Black man who purchased land here for a farm. Creepy Victorian food
Victorians ate virtually every part of an animal, supping on delicacies likes brains and hearts. Another famous dish from the Victorian era was turtle soup. The turtle was prized above all for its green jellylike fat which was used to flavor the soup made from the long-boiled stringy flesh of the creature. 76

The Victorian era was home to some of the most rigid social codes in Western history. This extended to all areas of life. When women would plan to visit their friends and acquaintances, it was referred to as “paying a call,” and could only be done in the afternoon. To pay a call at any other time was an incredible show of bad manners, as was overstaying your welcome. Like an intricate board game, if someone else came to pay a call while you were at someone’s house, you would gracefully exit, lest you be considered rude. 83

Are you going to eat that?
The Victorians ate virtually every part of an animal. This is not entirely creepy if you are a food fanatic but for most people, the idea of supping on a bowl of brains and heart is not appealing. Another famous dish from the Victorian era was turtle soup. The turtle was prized above all for its green jelly-like fat which was used to flavor the soup made from the long-boiled stringy flesh of the animal. 86

Bucket Brigade was establishedin 2017 by twin brothers, Karl and Kurt Hughes, firefighters from Cape May County, NJ. They serve up quality, handcrafted ales, pilsners, and lagers in a fun, exciting place located just minutes off Stone Harbor Boulevard and the Garden State Parkway at Exit 10. This fire service-themed venue pays homage to all public service and military members in a comfortable tasting room surrounded by memorabilia. You can also purchase growlers to go.
