Are you going to eat that?

The Victorians ate virtually every part of an animal. This is not entirely creepy if you are a food fanatic but for most people, the idea of supping on a bowl of brains and heart is not appealing. Another famous dish from the Victorian era was turtle soup. The turtle was prized above all for its green jelly-like fat which was used to flavor the soup made from the long-boiled stringy flesh of the animal. 20

So many women’s activities of the mid and late 19th century served to show that they were middle class. Making artificial flowers was one of these. Both time-consuming and useless, making artificial flowers proved that your husband’s income made it possible for you to do no housework. Along with disabling clothing and countless crafts, flower-making was a visible sign of middle-class-ness. The conventions of the time made women almost literally prisoners in their parlors.

Down the aisle

The accepted career for women in the Victorian era was marriage. To get ready for courtship and marriage a girl was groomed like a racehorse. In addition to being able to sing, play an instrument and speak a little French or Italian, the qualities a young Victorian gentlewoman needed were to be innocent, virtuous, biddable, dutiful and be ignorant of intellectual opinion. Yeah, right. 30

What was life like in the 1890s? Say cheese

In the Victorian era, photography was young and extremely costly. When a loved one died, their relatives would sometimes have a photograph taken of the corpse in a pose – oftentimes with other members of the family. For the vast majority of Victorians, this was the only time they would be photographed. In these post-mortem photographs, the effect of life was sometimes enhanced by either propping the subject’s eyes open or painting pupils onto the photographic print, and many early images have a rosy tint added to the cheeks of the corpse. Adults were more commonly posed in chairs or even braced on specially-designed frames. 45

A new mystery for 2018!

The rooms of the 1879 Emlen Physick Estate provide the perfect stage for this “whodunnit” mystery!

A local suffragette takes her mission too far when she breaks into the mayor’s house with her group of protesters. When the police arrive expecting a simple case of trespassing, everyone discovers that something much more sinister has happened. Somewhere beneath all of the family secrets and political agendas lies a motive, and somewhere in the house lurks a killer. Can you find out who it is and bring them to justice before they strike again? Accessible with advance notice.

Creepy Victorian food

Victorians ate virtually every part of an animal, supping on delicacies likes brains and hearts. Another famous dish from the Victorian era was turtle soup. The turtle was prized above all for its green jellylike fat which was used to flavor the soup made from the long-boiled stringy flesh of the creature. 52

What’s for dinner?

Victorians valued good cooking and food. However, there were great differences between what the rich and poorer people ate. The unemployed, and others with little money, survived on little more than potato parings, rotten vegetable refuse and scraps. Those on a slightly higher wage could occasionally purchase some bacon, cheese or sausage and workers in better-paid jobs had more choice and more wholesome food. Meal time provided the opportunity for the rich to display their wealth... through rich foods, use of fine cutlery, china and servants. French cuisine was in fashion, with as many as 20 dishes served at the same time in two great courses. 55

Hope you like dogs!

9:45am, 11am

Among the unique spirits reported at the Physick Estate by psychic medium Craig McManus are several of Dr. Physick’s dogs. They have been seen the house and one romping through the gardens. Apparently, there is some disturbance when the dogs are about, because they were never allowed in the house by Mrs. Ralston. Aunt Emilie, however, had a softer spot for Dr. Physick’s canine companions, and prepared their dinners in the estate’s kitchen, and would let them in the house when Mrs. Ralston was absent. 56

Capturing Cape May’s Architecture: The Making of a National Historic Landmark Open daily through Oct. 31: See calendar for times • FREE ADMISSION In the early ’70s, a team from the Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS) produced pen and ink drawings of this seaside town’s most significant historic structures. The drawings enabled Cape May to become a National Historic Landmark and a national tourist destination. Now, for the first time, these intricate drawings and the stories of the architects whose hands created them are on exhibit at the Carroll Gallery. Curator Karen Fox, author of “The Chalfonte,” provides visitors with a unique look at how a small band of preservationists saved not only the buildings, but a culture of the past creating a future. To view online, visit www.capemaymac.org/carroll-gallery-exhibits.
