NATWESTISLANDGAMES2013.COM PROGRAMME OF EVENTS

The NatWest Island Games By Jon Beard, Chairman

There will be hundreds of events taking place across all sports during the week. A wonderful opportunity to experience first-hand some top athletes in action.

The NatWest Island Games are held every two years, with the host island being one of the 24 members of the International Island Games Association. This is an association of islands each with a population of under 120,000. The islands are mainly European islands, but also include Bermuda, Cayman, Greenland, St Helena and the Falkland Islands.

Athletics | Basketball | Badminton | Cycling | Football | Golf | Gymnastics | Sailing & Boardsailing | Shooting— Clay Pigeon & Target | Squash | Swimming | Tennis | Triathlon | Volleyball—Beach & Indoor

The Games started in a small way in a festival of sport in the Isle of Man in 1985, and has developed into one of the largest multi-sport competitions in Europe. We expect an influx of visitors for the Games (athletes, officials, and spectators) of about 2,000 people. The athletes are all their island’s ‘national teams’ and compete at a high-level. The sports being competed in Bermuda are: Athletics, Badminton, Basketball, Beach Volleyball, Boardsailing, Cycling, Football, Golf, Gymnastics, Sailing, Shooting, Squash, Swimming, Tennis, Triathlon, and indoor Volleyball.

Joell Tennis Stadium, Spanish Point Boat Club, BAA, Port Royal, the Gymnastics Centre at Southside, Warwick Camp, Coopers Island, and the Bermuda Squash Racquets club - and the centre piece for all of this will be the Bermuda National Sports Centre. The Centre (at Prospect) will host: Athletics, Swimming (in the new pool), Football and Beach Volleyball; as well as the Games Office, an Athletes Village, the Opening & Closing Ceremonies, and medical assistance for the athletes. We can expect spectators from all of the member islands, and a crew of journalists from many of them. Admission is free at most venues, the exception being the National Sports Centre. Entry there will be $5 a night for adults. The Bermuda NatWest Island Games 2013 is made up a dedicated group of Bermudian volunteers who have worked very hard to make this happen. They are also depending on a massive group of volunteers (around 1,000 strong); there is always need for more volunteers! VIP Excellence Awards Kudre Hill

“Young person with the most promise - nominee” Recently you were honored as a nominee at the Visitor Industry Partnership Awards Ceremony. What is it that sets you apart from the average person and how do you feel this contributes to your success? I believe my ability to blend professionalism with a great sense of humor and love for people is what sets me apart from the average person. The hospitality industry demands that you have personality because you deal with all types of people. As a result, my strong people skills will contribute to my success. We live in an ever-changing world where people have lots of options, so the qualities I possess not only leave a lasting impression on the individuals I meet but they also greatly impact their perception of Bermuda. What advice can you offer those who would like to be apart of the hospitality industry and those who have not considered it before now? Hospitality is not an easy industry. It requires dedication and sacrifice. Our willingness to sacrifice is a reflection of our values, and as Bermudians we should value our island. We should be delighted to be a part of the hospitality industry because we have a chance to share our island home with the world while also making Bermuda a brighter place. For me, one of the biggest rewards in this industry is seeing other people happy and knowing I contributed to their happiness by using something as simple as a smile. Still, the hospitality industry is missing something. It’s missing you and the flare that you have to offer Bermuda. If you haven’t considered the hospitality industry, I would encourage you to join the industry. We all have a role to play. Visitor Industry Partnership Awards 441 734-8125 | www.vip.bm

Health & beauty FAKE BAKE U.K. Leading Sunless Tanning with Hanifah Smith, Lush Makeup Lash & Brow Bar

Give your Skin some TLC (Tightens, Lift and Contour) THERMAGE CPT NOW AVAILABLE IN BERMUDA By Willi Lawrence, R.N.

By Candice Dickinson

Fake Bake is the U.K.’s leading sunless tanning brand, which is renowned for producing high quality, innovative fake tanning products and services. Fake Bake sunless tanning products are available at Lush this summer and are created with only the best ingredients in the market giving a natural looking long lasting tan! Fake Bake is the perfect solution for people who don’t get out in the sun because of busy schedules or who choose not to sun tan for health reasons. It is the perfect way to get that golden glow you have always dreamed of. How does it work and how long will the tan last? Fake Bake can be applied by a professional at Lush or in the comfort of your own home. It should be applied once a week. The cool thing is that the more you apply the darker your tan so start out with one application and give it a week. The second time around you may want to spray twice for a darker tan. How long does it take to dry? Each person has a different skin type with different levels of moisture. Most applications will take approximately 20 minutes. If applying Fake Bake in the evening give yourself a few hours before going to bed and never shower right after. Will it wash off in the shower? Just like a tan from the sun, Fake Bake tanning products will not wash off because of the ingredient Dihydroxy (DHA) which will fade just as any suntan does. This is why weekly application is recommended.
Can I use Fake Bake on my face? Yes, it was designed for the whole body! Will Fake Bake stain my clothes?
Fake Bake is made with Organic color pigment and it is not a stain or a dye so the answer is no, it will not permanently stain and it will actually wash out of synthetic material.

Dr. Romeo & Willi have been offering Thermage since 2004

It’s new, it’s revolutionary and it’s better than ever! CPT (Comfort Pulse Technology) provides a faster, more comfortable anti-aging skin tightening treatment better than our previous model. Unlike other skin tightening devices including bi-polar technologies, the CPT can deliver results in a single treatment. Thermage tightens skin with its proprietary MONOPOLAR radiofrequency that safely delivers heat and energy to all three layers of the skin. This is the device that has been seen on Oprah, The Doctors, Good Morning America, various magazines as well as other media outlets. Solta Medical received FDA clearance in 1999 and has a patent on Thermage. Thermage, botox and fillers are becoming quite the trend for men. Basically for the same reasons that women are attracted to these antiaging treatments. There is no downtime and results are very natural if done by an experienced health care provider. in todays job market there is more competition that a youthful look is becoming as important to men as it is for women. Just released on May 6, 2013 the company announced the new Total Tip. We were very lucky to have received the new tip with our CPT machine. I am seeing visible results with patients right off the table in their face, neck and jowls. I had the treatment myself and have photos that show my progress over two months time. With the new vibrating hand-piece it was like having a warm facial. As we age and get more sun exposure our collagen breaks down and skin start to sag and wrinkle, Thermage stimulates your collagen to produce more over the next six months lasting for years. So give your skin some TLC (tightens, lift and contour). Call for a free consult with Ms. Lawrence to find out if you are a candidate for Thermage. Call 295-9963 or email botoxwiili@hotmail.com

Mental Imagery: “Picture the Shot You Want to Play” BY Dr. Bernie Jensen, Sport Psychologist

One of the most important contributions of sport psychology to the enhancement of athletic performance involves the use of mental imagery (or “visualization”). Although such techniques have long been known to psychologists, it has only been within the last 25 years or so that their use has been more widely applied to sports. However, it is now common for world class golfers, skiers, weight-lifters, soccer/football players, gymnasts, etc. to go through a process of mental rehearsal during or in preparation for competition.

www.thisweek.bm

L e a r n to “Think Like the Pro’s” Po r t Royal Developme ntal P rogram pre s e nts

Sports Psychologist

Dr. Bernard Jensen

What is involved in this skill, and how can the skill be acquired? Although this article cannot be expected to successfully teach you everything you need to know in order to become an expert in the use of mental imagery, I will attempt to describe several important aspects of the process. Essentially, mental imagery as it applies to golf requires clearly creating in your “mind’s eye,” a picture of yourself engaging in various golfing skills. Perhaps the most typical golf skill that one can focus upon in mental rehearsal involves executing a particular shot. For example, this might involve driving straight and long off the first tee, escaping from a greenside bunker to within two feet of the hole, or draining a 15-foot putt on the 18th green to win a match. In addition, other golf-related imagery could involve: seeing yourself relaxed on the first tee prior to a round, or maintaining your poise and concentration even after three-putting a green and making bogey (or worse!!). In fact, mental imagery can be used to refine or perfect particular shots or skills, correct swing flaws or mental errors, prepare for a match or tournament, or familiarize yourself with a course or hole. Mental imagery leads to more effective outcomes when you can create pictures in your head which are as detailed and vivid as possible. Therefore, the psychological skill of visualization requires a great deal of practice; but as with other skills, the more one practices, the better one becomes at visualization. Initially, practice can perhaps best be undertaken off the course in a quiet, relaxed setting. In fact, another psychological skill – relaxation training – has been shown to enhance mental imagery. In addition, most world class golfers and other elite athletes tend to use an “internal frame of reference” for their imagery. That is, they see themselves “from the inside,” through their own eyes, as if they were actually engaging in the activity. This can be contrasted with an “external frame of reference,” which involves the camera’s eye view or the perspective of a spectator. You want to be able to see, hear, and feel yourself executing the many different shots that arise during a round of golf. It can be helpful during the beginning stages of learning imagery rehearsal to write down or dictate into a tape recorder various details of the images you are trying to create. Some examples might include: “hear the birds chirping in the background; feel the warmth of the sun shining on my back; feel the relaxed grip on the club as I begin to address the ball; imagine the forward press, the slow take-away;” etc. Obviously in the game of golf, many different shots are required, so a variety of different images will need to be rehearsed. However, daily practice can help to create clear, detailed images of the scenes and circumstances important to your game. Up to this point, I have been suggesting that learning mental imagery initially requires a great deal of practice off the golf course. Ultimately however, you will also need to be able to apply visualization on the course, in the heat of competition. This transfer of training from the living room to the first tee may begin to occur naturally as an outgrowth of your frequent off course rehearsal, but it is more likely that a concentrated effort at using visualization on the course will be necessary. Two ways to bring this skill onto the course are: (1) to practice mental imagery between shots, as you walk or ride to your ball or the next tee; and (2) to make it a part of your pre-shot routine. When using the latter approach, you should begin using imagery while your partners are playing their shots, so that you do not slow down the pace of play. What are the likely results of using mental imagery? Simply put, mental imagery (along with other sport psychology approaches) can help you get the most out of your physical skills. Mental imagery will not magically take shots off your score, and it is not a substitute for practice on the mechanics of the golf swing. Therefore, I would certainly recommend that you commit yourself to finding a good PGA or LPGA professional who can teach you sound fundamentals and to whom you can return from time to time for corrective feedback and advanced instruction on your swing. So let me conclude by strongly encouraging you to begin practicing and using the skill of visualization to improve your play by harnessing the tremendous mental powers within your grasp!

DO YOU KNOW…

… About the ill-fated Flight of the ‘Tradewind’? By Horst Augustinovic

In January 1931 Mrs. Beryl Hart and Lieutenant William S. MacLaren attempted to cross the Atlantic via Bermuda and the Azores and establish commercial flights between New York and Paris. Mrs. Hart held a transport pilot’s license and Lieutenant MacLaren was the flight’s copilot/navigator. Their plane was a Bellanca CH300 high wing seaplane called ‘Tradewind’.

On January 3rd they took off from Hampton Roads, Virginia, but returned after some 16 hours in the air because of bad weather conditions. A letter carried on the ‘Tradewind’ from New York to Bermuda. It shows the On January 7th they were more successful, having left Hampton Roads at intended route from New York to Paris. 6am they landed in Hamilton Harbour at 2pm. Shortly after take-off the fuel pump had failed and both aviators took turns pumping fuel from the main tank to the engine, resulting in some blistered hands! During their three days in Bermuda the couple were treated as heroes and entertained at a gala dinner at the Princess Hotel. On that occasion Lieut. MacLaren made the following comments: “When the invitation first came, Mrs. Hart was somewhat embarrassed at the thought of being the only woman present at a dinner attended by men only. My answer to her was ‘you have done a man’s job and well earned the right to be present at a stag party’. Turning to the Speaker of the House of Assembly, Lieut. MacLaren continued: “You, sir, have referred to your lovely island’s interest in us. I can assure you it is nothing compared with our interest in you. Having flown over many miles of water you have no idea how good Bermuda looks to a navigator when he first catches a glimpse of her”. He continued: “Now Gentlemen, I would not have you think that ours is a stunt flight or a foolhardy undertaking. Commercial flying between the USA and Europe A rather prophetic postcard sent by Lieut. MacLaren to Mr. Roessler of East is coming for a certainty and it is necessary that practical knowledge of Orange, N.J. Albert C. Roessler was a stamp dealer, best known for his cacheted the conditions pertaining to success should be learned. Theories may be envelopes, particularly of first flights. studied in an office, but someone has got to begin the actual practice of flying. That is what we are here for”. On the following day, Saturday, January 10th, Mrs. Beryl Hart and Lieut. William MacLaren took off for the Azores, 2,100 miles away. Tragically they ONE OF BERMUDA’S were never heard from again.

Get Spoiled at Harbourfront! By Candice Dickinson

Located on the waters edge adjacent to the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute (BUEI), just outside the City of Hamilton, this stunning restaurant claims the most picturesque view of Hamilton Harbour. Enjoy only the freshest produce, seafood, choice meats, an exceptional wine list, delightful cocktails and a variety of dining options including the Komodaru Sushi Lounge and the new, very sophisticated but oh so fun patio lounge. The award-winning establishment treats each guest with the highest quality service giving them no choice but to return again and again. An absolute favourite among locals and frequent visitors, Harbourfront isn’t just a restaurant it‘s an adventure.

“A customer once said ’your menu is a 3rd Asian, 3rd Fusion and 3rd fine dining’. They were correct, in order for people to come frequently they need to be able to enjoy a new experience each and every time. We can’t make everyone happy and it is challenging to have such a diverse menu but it works and our customers are very happy and they come back again and again so this is why we do what we do.” Pierangelo Lanfranchi

Komodaru Sushi Lounge

Step inside the gorgeous and intimate sushi lounge at Harbourfront for lunch, happy hour or dinner. Happy hour at Harbourfront offers a great selection of beautiful sushi plates starting at just $5.95 a roll and why stop there when you can choose a complimenting glass of wine at $5.95 a glass! It is the perfect place to go after a long day to catch up with friends and loved ones. Make a reservation and request to be seated on the patio if the weather is inviting and why not make your experience complete with a chilled glass of Moët & Chandon Brut Imperial N/V. Harbourfront recently redesigned their sushi menu and offer gluten free options. If that isn’t exciting enough, the infamous Togarachi will officially be on the menu along with other favourites such as the Nilo, Roul, Richard and Renaldo named after Harbourfronts four chefs! Don’t forget to ask about other special dishes and rolls named after some of Harbourfronts special regulars. You might just become one of them so you should start thinking about what ingredients you would have in your signature dish! A fantastic combination of spicy tuna, crispy shrimp tempura and sweet tasting eel wrapped with tuna.

Nilo

Harbourfront will most likely bring out your adventurous side and you might like to try the Homemade Ravioli Wild Boar Venison Ragout! On the other hand you may just want to sit back and let your taste buds go wild while enjoying the Fish Quattro. This dish can’t even be explained, you will just have to try it yourself. It's All Happening Take me to the Swizzle Inn! By Candice Dickinson

The first stop many visitors make when they arrive in Bermuda is at the oldest and most famous pub on the island, our beloved Swizzle Inn. Many burst through the doors looking for the infamous Rum Swizzle and an hour or two later, they swagger out.

GREAT FOOD & DRINK MON - FRI 11AM TO 1AM SAT - SuN 9AM TO 1AM LuNCH 11AM TO 5PM DINNER 5PM TO 11PM

The original location in Baileys Bay has been a favourite among locals and visitors since it opened in 1932. With an inviting and cozy two story balcony and old time rustic indoor setting, it’s no wonder why this is a hot spot. The windows are plastered with stickers while inside business cards and graffiti cover the walls and are wedged into the pubs’ doorframes. There is a shelf inside full of books that have seen better days. Like the old saying goes, never judge a book by its cover, especially these books because inside you will find notes from guests that date back to the beginning. Some of this memorabilia has been collecting dust for almost eighty years. How cool is that?!?!

Hungry yet?

Now time to tease your thirst!

Whatever delicious dish(s) you choose, you will have to also decide on a beverage, to wash it all down. The Rum Swizzle is an obvious choice and you definitely have to try it but we also suggest a Seabreeze with Finlandia Grapefruit Vodka and who should you ask to make this for you? Any of the bartenders will be happy to make it but we suggest you ask for Rogernae Lightbourne if you’re at Baileys Bay. A good drink is great but when a bartender serves it with a smile like Rogernae – your experience is complete.
