Fake Bake Self Tanning Where science meets cosmetics

Self-tanners, also known as sunless tanning, spray tanning, airbrush tanning, fake tanning and even UVfree tanning are so much more than a body makeup or a tinted moisturizer. Self-tanning refers to any product that interacts with your skin to turn it tan. These products can be in the form of lotions, creams, mousses, sprays, gels, and foam. The active ingredient in most effective sunless tanning products is the sugar additive, dihydroxyacetone (DHA). When applied, DHA reacts with dead cells in the skin’s surface to temporarily darken the skin. The coloring typically wears off after a few days. This is why self-tanners fade and do not wash off. This is the same type of interaction you witness with foods turning brown such as apples and pears when the inside is left exposed to air. Most people now realize that the sun, and more specifically UV radiation, is dangerous. Study after study has shown that UV radiation (from the sun or tanning beds) causes premature wrinkling of the skin, age spots and even skin cancer. DHA has been approved by the FDA for use in self-tanners since 1973. DHA is also approved by Europe’s version of the FDA, the European Medicines Agency. Further, sunless tanning is recommended by the American Medical Association, the American Academy of Dermatology and the Skin Cancer Foundation as a safer alternative to UV radiation from the sun or tanning beds. In addition to DHA, self-tanning products also contain a number of other ingredients that are found in many other cosmetic and beauty products. These can include botanicals, organics, moisturizing agents, cosmeceuticals, chemical compounds and other commonly used ingredients. DHA has not been found to cause any ill effects when used as directed. Self-tanning is the safest known way to get a gorgeous tan. Depending on which product you use, results will begin to develop within a few hours and can last anywhere from 3-7 days. Tanned skin looks healthier and more attractive. Fake Bake gives an instant sun-kissed color and develops into a long lasting sunless fake tan guaranteeing longer lasting, more natural-looking results and has become the choice of beauty editors and experts, TV personalities and celebrities such as Jennifer Aniston, Guillana Rancic, Cheryl Burke, Nicole Scherzinger and Jessica Alba. Hello world, it’s October in Bermuda - with our great golf weather and of course - the PGA Grand Slam of Golf at Port Royal Golf Course, October 14-16, 2013. The excitement is mounting with each passing day. The course preparation is intense and the grounds staff are taking great pride as they work around the clock to have our course ready on the day to play host to four of golf ’s great champions and be seen by millions of viewers around the globe. For the people of Bermuda, this is an awesome opportunity and a tremendous marketing tool. To have repeatedly played host to this prestigious tournament, has communicated a positive message about Bermuda across the globe. Serious golfers ravel at playing the same golf courses that are showcased on television, and Port Royal Golf Course is today on the ‘must play list’ of most golfers visiting and those desirous of visiting Bermuda. Of course, Irishman Padraig Harrington is one of my modern day favourite players, an excellent wind player and a good bet to defend the PGA Grand Slam, and a repeat would bolster a modest season. Justin Rose and Adam Scott with their awesome golf games - are considered two of the nicest guys on the PGA Tour - I have no doubt that they will come looking to win and not disappoint the strong following that they have here in Bermuda. Roses IN BERMUDA REVISITED A SNEAK PEAK AT THE NEW BOOK with The Bermuda Rose Society

Bermuda’s Mystery Roses Trinity One of the loveliest of the Mystery Roses. A bush of this rose was first found growing just inside the wall at Holy Trinity Church in Bailey’s Bay. Fortunately, members of the Society took slips so that “Trinity” still blooms there on a child’s grave. A vigorous grower reaching a height of 6ft.(1.8m) this rose has dark green foliage. The long pointed buds are pale pink opening into pure white loose 4in. (10cm) blooms with petaloids and fuzzy bright yellow stamens. A constant bloomer.

Mystery Rose Frances Earl This Mystery rose was found growing in Miss Frances Earl’s garden on Pitts’s Bay Road in Pembroke Parish. It is a vigorous climber, but with strict supervision can be trained into a standard or bushy shrub. Its growth is very rapid, producing long canes. If these canes are pruned to about 4ft.(1.2m) the bush will be much fuller and produce many more blooms. The foliage is deep green with leaves composed of five or seven leaflets. There are prickles on the underside of the leaf stalk. There are also large prickles along the canes. New growth is purple in colour becoming green as it matures. Blooms are produced on the end of new growth, either singly or in small clusters. The fat deep pink buds open to large 3in.(7.5cm) double flowers. They are medium pink with very muddled centres fading to almost white on the outer petals. The petals have light yellow at their base. This beautiful rose tends to hang its head, but it certainly has nothing to be ashamed of as it grows extremely well in Bermuda gardens and blooms year-round.

Heritage Matters Bermuda in a World Heritage Universe with Dr. Edward Harris, MBE JP

measures which give this heritage a function in the day-to-day life of the community.’ ‘Today, the World Heritage concept is so well understood that sites on the List are a magnet for international cooperation and may thus receive financial assistance for heritage conservation projects from a variety of sources. Finally, the inscription of a site on the World Heritage List brings an increase in public awareness of the site and of its outstanding values, thus also increasing the tourist activities at the site. When these are well planned for and organized respecting sustainable tourism principles, they can bring important funds to the site and to the local economy.’ In the year 2000, Bermuda was inscribed on the World Heritage List by UNESCO as ‘The Town of St George, founded in 1612, is an outstanding example of the earliest English urban settlement in the New World. Its associated fortifications graphically illustrate the development of English military engineering from the 17th to the 20th century, being adapted to take account of the development of artillery over this period.’

A little over a generation ago, the 1972 World Heritage Convention paved a new highway of nature conservation and cultural properties preservation that was destined to elevate some of Bermuda’s cultural assets to the level of one of but 981 ‘World Heritage Sites’ in 160 ‘State Parties’ lands around the earth. It was those assets and others that Dr. Christopher Young, Head of International Advice at English Heritage, recently came to Bermuda to view, for it had been some years since such an official from the United Kingdom (our State Party) had set eyes on our buildings and monuments.

Now is not the time to labour over with the details of all that wonderful heritage which lies north and east of Castle Harbour, from the divine (architecturally speaking) St. Peter’s, to the fortifications, to the wonderful homes of the Town, but to say that we in Bermuda have been accorded a privilege given but to a few. It is an honour that comes with great responsibilities, the achievement of which cannot but rebound to the good of the whole country, for our best friends and repeat visitors are those who love us for our heritage, for what makes Bermuda, Bermuda. We hope that Dr. Young returned to the ‘State Party’ not only impressed with the monuments themselves but with the commitment that all who love and reside in this place have in preserving that heritage, not only for Bermuda, but all other people as well, for part of this place is now officially designated as an asset in the ‘World Heritage’ universe.

The World Heritage Convention ‘defines the kind of natural or cultural sites which can be considered for inscription on the World Heritage List. By signing the Convention, each country pledges to conserve not only the World Heritage sites situated on its territory, but also to protect its national heritage. The States Parties are encouraged to integrate the protection of the cultural and natural heritage into regional planning programmes, set up staff and services at their sites, undertake scientific and technical conservation research and adopt The spiritual and physical centre of St. George’s is the World Heritage church of St. Peter’s, renamed in part recently as ‘Their Majesties Chappell’, after a late 1600s warrant of the King of England. the Colonial Postmaster, Mr. Aubrey G. Butterfield, obtained ‘with considerable difficulty sufficient funds through the Legislature to purchase twelve pillar letter boxes’. In July 1882 the first three of the pillar letter boxes were installed at Wellington, St. George’s; near the Ferry Road Receiving Office; and at Clarence Hill near Admiralty House in Pembroke West.

While the original pillar letter boxes had no markings of any kind, others show the Royal Cipher of King George V (1910 to 1936); King George VI (1936 to 1952) and Queen Elizabeth II (1952 to the present).

The design of the pillar letter boxes installed during the course of a century is essentially the same, with the slot in the upper part, and the entire front opening when unlocked by the postman. With larger envelopes being mailed in more recent times, the letter slot was widened on the Elizabethan pillar boxes. In some cases there did not seem to be enough room for freestanding pillar boxes and letter boxes were set into a wall instead. These can be found with the Royal Cipher of King George V, George VI as well as Queen Elizabeth II. Today there are 46 letter boxes along the main roads of Bermuda. Of these 21 are pillar letter boxes and 25 are wall-mounted letter boxes.

Nephew of James Taylor, Deputy Postmaster General of Bermuda from 1818 to 1853, James Henry Thies worked with his uncle at the St. George’s Post Office and, in 1860 was appointed Postmaster General of Bermuda. Even before becoming Postmaster General, James Thies was already producing his own ‘Postmaster Stamps’ in St. George’s, as did William Perot in Hamilton. Only four examples are known to exist.

Two Victorian Pillar Boxes that were moved from the road into a wall on Pitts Bay Road and onto a wall on St. John’s Road; a Pillar Box from the reign of King George V at the Crow Lane bus stop and a Pillar Box from the reign of King George VI on the top of Queen Street.

When regular postage stamps were introduced in 1865, James Thies did not like the idea at all and complained about the complicated accounts he had to submit to both the local Government and the GPO in London. While he was able to satisfy the colonial auditors for the next 12 years, he was out of his depth and failed to keep accurate records of stocks, with the result that stamps had to be overprinted in 1874 and 1875. He also failed to request 2-1/2 penny stamps when the letter rate to the United States was increased, with Bermuda consequently losing ½ penny on every letter sent to the U.S.

After an investigation, James Thies was suspended from office and Percy Turner took over as Acting Postmaster General. Meanwhile James Thies was brought to trial in June 1879, but because of his popularity, the jury ‘was unable to reach a verdict’. When additional charges were brought against him in October, he was found ‘guilty of neglect of duty’ and forfeited his bond. In 1880 he resigned as Mayor of St. George’s and moved to New York. Before returning to London in July 1879, Percy Turner had completely reorganized the Bermuda postal system.

By 1877 it was clear that the Post Office needed an overhaul and Bermuda’s Governor asked for help from the G.P.O. in London. Percy V. Turner, a postal inspector, arrived in 1878 to help reorganize the Bermuda Postal System and assist in the preparation of a new Post Office Act after Bermuda became a member of the Universal Postal Union in the previous year.

Known simply as “The Beach” to locals who gather to hear tunes spun by local entertainers, DJ Choice, YGS and Magnum Force, this hot spot’s savory menu is often overlooked. In fact, if you ask around town for places that serve the freshest catches of the day, chances are they will direct you to the corner of Front and Parliament Streets in the heart of Hamilton and you will find yourself standing on the door step of “The Beach”. After sampling a delicious plated Tuna Sashimi prepared by Head Chef Antonio Belvedere, we can see why this restaurant is considered to be the ideal destination for gourmet dishes including lobster! Open morning, noon and night, The Beach offers the best drink specials in town, a ten-hour long happy hour, an incredible selection of delicious food, a full bar and plenty of flat screen TVs to keep sports hungry fans entertained for hours.

When Chef Toto isn’t in the kitchen or sharpening his knives, he is all about family and never misses an opportunity to spend time with those closest to him. When he heads out for a great meal cooked for him rather than by him, Chef Toto likes to head up to Dockyard to see friend and inspiration Livio Ferigo at Bonefish Bar and Grill where he is not only owner but the head Chef as well. A LOBSTER TALE Lobster season is upon us and according to Chef Toto, The Beach sold more lobsters in the first month of the 2012 lobster season than the entire season before in 2011. No doubt, due to his kitchen skills. Chef Toto prepares local lobsters three different ways.

Meet Chef Toto Antonio Belvedere, known to many as Chef Toto, did not dream of spending his days and nights in a kitchen. His intent on studying Business Administration at Bermuda College left him yearning for a more “hands-on” occupation, which led him to the culinary program at the college. This local Italian-Bermudian chef started from the bottom as a sous chef shortly after graduating May, 2012. Today he is the head chef at The Beach, cooking up mouthwatering dishes like the Governor’s Salad, an 8 oz grilled strip steak layered with blue cheese on a crisp house salad, or one of the signature bistro entrées, Basil’s Famous Chicken Curry boasting the best curry on Front Street and served with basmati rice and a papadum.

Thermidor Lobster Inspired by the French, Thermidor basically means that all of the meat is removed combined with a creamy mixture of egg yolks, and cognac or brandy then stuffed back into a lobster shell. Pairing: Excellent with a pint of Stella Artois!!

Broiled Lobster The lobster shells are cut lengthwise and the meat is seasoned with butter, paprika, salt and pepper, and then broiled. Pairing: Great with an ice cold Hoegaarden!! Curried Lobster The lobster is boiled, then the meat is removed and Dundee IPA cut into chunks. It is then curried and served over rice. Pairing: Dundee IPA is the perfect pairing for curried lobster!! Complementing Sides Each dish is served with a selection of macaroni and cheese, French fries, rice, baked potato, mashed potato, Cesar salad, mixed greens or a vegetable medley.
