Letter fromthe Mayor
LETTER FROM THE MAYOR OF HAMILTON THE WOR. MR. CHARLES GOSLING Welcome to the City of Hamilton It is my honor, as the Mayor, to welcome you to the City of Hamilton, one of the smallest cities in the world, rich in history, culture and heritage. The original Town of Hamilton was incorporated by an Act of the Bermuda Legislature in 1793. Located in a sheltered harbour in the central and largest parish, Pembroke, it was named in honour of the then Governor, Captain Henry Hamilton. The town quickly became the capital of Bermuda when the seat of Government was transferred from St. George’s in 1815. Following the completion of the Cathedral of the Most Holy Trinity, situated some 400 yards east of the present City Hall, the status of City was conferred upon the Town of Hamilton in 1897 to commemorate the Diamond Jubilee of Her Majesty Queen Victoria. The City of Hamilton has a resident population of about 1,100 and an estimated daytime population of approximately 13,340 (40% of Bermuda’s working population). This number increases significantly when tourists are added to the equation. In addition to the excellent cuisine that can be found in the city’s many varied restaurants, the shopping is easy and the historic sites are a must see. I can attest to the fact that Hamilton is a delightful capital to get around on foot. Measuring about a quarter square mile, the entire area can be walked in about 30 minutes however, exploring, discovering and enjoying the sites, both historic and new, can take hours, maybe even days. Anyone wishing to explore the City in depth can participate in the Walkway of History tour that was created as part of Bermuda’s 400th Anniversary, in 2009. Plaques have been installed in the sidewalk at various points along the route to identify important sites of architectural, social, cultural or historical significance in the City. This self-guided tour starts and ends on Church Street in front of the City Hall, and enables the pedestrian to learn about the history of the city and may be taken as a whole or in parts. Some of the sights to discover include: City Hall Opened in 1960, the building is of traditional Bermuda architecture with a Scandinavian influence in respect of the tower. In 2010 we celebrated the building’s 50th anniversary by reproducing a number of activities that took place at the opening, including inviting some of the workers who helped with the construction. City Hall’s amenities include a theatre, two galleries housing the Bermuda National Gallery and the Bermuda Society of Arts, the Mayor’s Parlour, and the administrative offices of the City of Hamilton. Victoria Park Bandstand Painstakingly dismantled, refurbished and reassembled in 2009, the Victorian Bandstand was originally shipped to Bermuda in 1888 to commemorate Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee in June 1887. Wesley Square A purpose built recreational area officially opened in July 2009 to commemorate the men and women who in 1959, with bravery, tenacity and a vision for a better Bermuda, staged a peaceful theatre boycott and protested for equality, freedom and the end to segregation. City Parks There are four large public parks within the City of Hamilton that are open to the general public between 8am to sunset every day. They are: Fort Hamilton, Barr’s Bay Park, Par-laVille Park and my favorite, Victoria Park. Again, welcome to Hamilton, Bermuda at it best. For more information visit www.cityofhamilton.bm.

BERMUDA haha SHRINKING FROM THE TRUTH By Roger Crombie
It’s official: I’m the biggest loser in history. I have been on three major diets in my life, and lost, altogether, two-thirds of what I weigh now. I am half the man I would otherwise have been. After the first two diets, of course, I put it all back on, and more. The jury’s out on the third diet, because I’m only seven months into it. I put on a ton before leaving Bermuda in 2010 and then found myself in a country where every store, gas station, railway station and television station sells chocolate. I love chocolate and promptly gained another ton. Meanwhile, my waist went from 36” to 42”. Seven months of dieting later, I’m comfortable in 38”-waist pants. Delighted though I am, it’s a mere way-station to where I was in the 1980s and ’90s. To get there, I’ll have to be on the diet for another 18 months, minimum. I’m going for it. I’m really in the mood. Over the years, I’ve kept clothes that work at every stage of the race up or down the scales. Every time I move up a size, I vow to go on a diet soon. On the way down, however, the clothes become targets. I hope to be in the grey suit (bought 2006) by this summer and the silky double-breasted jacket (1995) by next summer. What is the secret, you ask? I’ve used three methods. The first was the watermelon diet. I drove a girlfriend down to Greece in 1973, on vacation. We ran out of money on day three, so I ate only watermelons, the cheapest available food, for three weeks. Lost about 35 pounds, what with the heat. The car ended up at the foot of a ravine and the girl left with the family that hit us. I never saw her again. This diet is not recommended. The second was also due to a girl. I fell so in love that I forgot to eat for six months. I wore polo shirts, for crying out loud. This diet is recommended, but cannot be faked. It must be real, once-in-a-lifetime love and it hurts like hell. Still, it is better to have loved and lost weight than never to have eaten chocolate in the first place. This time, finally, I’m doing it right. More exercise, less food. More exercise means walking a few miles every day. Less food means no chocolate (I had one profiterole at Christmas, otherwise nada) and endless bags of carrot batons. I have convinced myself I like carrots. I owe it all to a friend. In a supermarket, he said: ‘See that woman over there? She looks pregnant. So do you.” I didn’t kill him, and now I’m not quite so fat: win-win. I look a little odd, though. The weight doesn’t come off where you wish it would. I have chicken legs and a spare tyre. One day, though, I’ll be able to wear a polo shirt. That is my pledge to me.

Twelve Nights with Tracey Twelve Nights with Tracey from the best-selling author of Tea with Tracey, while quite a different adventure, displays the same sense of humour and upbeat style with 68 pictures as well! Focusing on the gift that keeps on giving and creating memories to last a lifetime, she shows how one gets what one gives, even when starting out with very few resources. The captivating first sentence, “Well really, the only thing to do was to have him kidnapped by a Playboy bunny” leads into a fascinating story of how gifts without meaning were something Tracey could not bring herself to give. Chronicling twelve nights that took five years to complete, the book not only serves as inspiration, but is a source of a multitude of interesting and educational facts Tracey came to discover on this journey. The mighty cast of volunteers who helped bring together the costumes, food, decorations and entertainment allowed her to take her surprised husband traveling around the world without leaving home. This non-fiction account gives many tips and ideas on how one might follow in her footsteps — even for just one special night. Visit www.thisweek.bm and enter to WIN a 12 Nights with Tracey book!!!

On Thursday, June 21, 2012 Bermuda is honouring this great music legend at the Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art, located on the grounds of Bermuda’s Botanical Gardens with an art exhibit, the unveiling of a memorial sculpture and the grand opening of the “Double Fantasy Labyrinth.” “The Imagine the Art of John Lennon” exhibit will include a selection of lithographs from Lennon’s “Bag One Portfolio” – a suite of prints published and hand-signed by John Lennon in 1960, centered around his wedding on Malta to Yoko Ono and posthumous limited edition prints signed by Yoko Ono. The images are a cross section of “peace” themed drawings, the “Real Love” drawings he created for his son, Sean, and serigraphs created from John Lennon’s hand-written lyrics from the “Double Fantasy” album, which was composed in Bermuda in July 1980. Many of which carry his hand-written “Fairyland, Bermuda” notation. Several of the prints capture his dark sense of whimsy and wit. It is a truly unique opportunity to get a glimpse into the inner workings of a modern day legend, and the exhibit is a celebration of another aspect of his creativity. This exhibit will be on display in the Rick Faries Gallery from June 21st – July 4th. The unveiling of the sculpture will take place in the courtyard in front of Masterworks Museum. Local sculptor Graham Foster has been commissioned to create the piece and he says, “I wanted identifiable imagery, but wanted to steer clear of the “typical” things associated with John Lennon; peace signs, doves etc. I decided to approach the sculpture in an expressionistic way. For the design I started sketching and ended up with around one hundred ideas which I then narrowed down to about twenty. These were sent to Yoko Ono, and she agreed with the concepts. I then began working towards a final version. The main iconic Lennon imagery I decided to work with were his stylized profile with glasses, the Rickenbacker guitar, doves and freesias (to highlight the Bermuda connection).” The sculpture itself with be placed in a raised flowerbed planted with Double Fantasy freesias in the courtyard in front of the Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Continued on page 34

ARTIST of
the month Sheilagh Head on The WINDJAMMER II
The Windjammer II gallery is located in Bermuda’s Fairmont Hamilton Princess Hotel. Follow the winding hallway past the reservations and information desk. Stop by the HP coffee shop along the way and pick up a coffee or tea for your visit to the Winjammer II, which you will find just around the corner. As you approach you will see that the gallery is made up of two large rooms across the hall facing each other. One room is the gallery and the other is the studio. You may be lucky enough to catch a resident painter hard at work creating a masterpiece. Be sure to stop in and sit off. Ask a few questions or just browse the beautiful art. Why Windjammer II? The Windjammer II is a continuation of a friends dream, she opened a gallery called the Windjammer in the early 1980’s. I was one of the first artists that she showcased in the Windjammer. She sadly passed away and the gallery closed. So when we were asked to open this gallery, it just seemed like a good thing to continue her dream. Windjammer II officially opened on October 23rd, 2009. When I was asked to open the gallery, there was a huge lack of professional galleries on the island and a great need for them. Unfortunately because of the high rents in Hamilton, it was impossible to keep a commercial gallery open. There were several rather good galleries who had gone out of business. So the Windjammer II is a very natural continuation of the Windjammer and we like to let our younger artists here in Bermuda know that there is a market for their work, there are people out there who are willing and able to support the arts. For a long time we watched a lot of our professional artists take their work overseas, because there was no market for their work here in Bermuda at the time. How many artists do you feature? Today The Windjammer II represents 54 artists & artisans. Each month we showcase a new artist in residence. In June our artist is residence is Michelle Lindo. How would you describe the Gallery? The Windjammer II is an eclectic, high-end commercial art gallery for professional artists who create art on a regular basis. Our artists are very sincere about their work. How do you feel about the Bermuda Art Scene and what some of the other local galleries are doing? We admire many of the local galleries and the pop up galleries that appear in café’s and various locations. With art, there are no rules, there is something for everybody. The Bermuda Society of Arts has done a fantastic job with their 5 studios. There is a wonderful buzz when you go up there, each room has something completely different from the next. The only thing that we feel sad about is that there seems to be a local desire to put down landscape and figurative painting in favor of a lot of non-figurative work, however most of us as artists recognize that there is a place for everyone in the arts. It is divisive not

You must enjoy the hotel guests day to day and meet people from all over the world. We are enormously grateful to the Fairmont Hamilton Princess for supporting us. It is a win win situation. The Fairmont guests are very excited about having the gallery on the premises. They come in on a regular basis. We are a great contact with Bermuda for the hotel guests. We offer them information on Bermuda and where to go, where to dine, etc. That’s another function of the Windjammer II; we are just so much more than an art gallery! “So come on by, relax and enjoy the gallery. Take your time, bring a coffee and sit off. Talk to the artist in the residence, Danjou who is our wonderful gallery manager or myself Sheilagh. If I am not painting myself!” Sheilagh Head

BERMUDA’S HISTORY
HISTORIcAl IMAgE Of THE MOnTH The “Bonnie Blue” flies over St. George’s Above the basking men in this photograph, a coloured flag with a white star flutters over the Town Square, St. George’s, Bermuda. Apparently not a British or Bermudian pennant, the flag caught the eye of staff at the National Museum, who identified it as the ‘Bonnie Blue’, a signal instrument of the first year of the Confederate States of America, which may date the photograph to early 1861. A number of flags were flown by the Confederates and most famously, the “Bonnie Blue Flag” was used as an unofficial flag during the early months of 1861. It was flying above the Confederate batteries that first opened fire on Fort Sumter, beginning the Civil War, on 12 April 1861. The flag was created in 1810 as the national flag of the Republic of West Florida, which was almost immediately gobbled up by the United States, making it, at 74 days, perhaps the shortest-lived republic in history. It was used as the symbol of the secession of the State of Mississippi on 9 January 1861, and thus inspired the song, ‘The Bonnie Blue Flag’, sung by Confederate soldiers. Possibly contrary to protocol, the ‘Bonnie Blue’ was flying over the Town Square of British Bermuda, further evidence that many on the island sympathized with the Confederacy, if only because it was bringing loads of cash into the place through block-running. – Dr Edward Harris Bermuda Maritime Museum
glADYS MISIck MORREll (1888-1969)
Gladys Morrell led the 25-year campaign for women’s voting rights. She worked with suffragettes as a university student in London and founded the Bermuda Women Suffrage Society (BWSS) with other like –minded women in 1922. Despite a hard-fought and often colourful campaign, the BWSS did not achieve success until 1944. A proponent also of better health care and education for women, irrespective of class and race, Morrell was a cofounder, along with Henrietta Tucker and Mrs J.E.P. Hand, of the Bermuda Welfare Society of Arts.

The Warwick Academy schoolhouse in a photograph probably dates to 1913.
Warwick Academy: the oldest school in Bermuda The establishment of a permanent education institution in Bermuda did not take place until the colony was half a century old, for it was 350 years ago that Warwick Academy came into being. That was despite a benefaction from one of its leading lights of the Bermuda Company, Sir Nathaniel Rich, of lands for the supporting of a school in Bermuda. Sir Nathaniel was related to Robert Rich, the Earl of Warwick, a large shareholder in the Bermuda Company, who had the central Warwick Parish, named for him. Twenty-six years after his death in 1636, Sir Nathaniel’s intention of establishing a school in Bermuda took hold in the rich soils of Warwick, so that in 2012 Warwick Academy celebrated 350 years as the oldest teaching institution in the land. The presence of the school from 1662 is recorded thus in Richard Norwood’s third and last survey of Bermuda (1663) on Share no. 30 of Warwick Tribe: ‘The free school (formerly Mr William Webster) one share of land, namely a tenement and half a share of land in the occupation of William Diller being the south half. Item: a tenement and half a share of land in the occupation of Thomas Hart or his assign. In all one share, abutting at the south end upon the partition line aforesaid and at the north end upon the north side sea lying between the lands of Mr Hugh Wentworth to the eastward, and the lands of Mr Perient Trott to the westward’; all in all a little under 25 acres. Thus the share of land for a school in Warwick Parish probably represents the only plot in Bermuda, so designated in the 1600s for such an educational use, which has retained that status into the The Warwick Parish share of 25 acres for Warwick present day. Academy in 1663 is indicated in red.
Bermuda’s History 37 A class of 1952 and their teacher, Mrs. Barnes, the boys sporting the first tie for Warwick Academy.
A 1990s Warwick Academy class, the lads wearing the third version of the school tie. It was on the southern part of Share 30 that Warwick Academy eventually developed into the institution that it is today, latterly due to the generosity of James Morgan of Montreal and ‘Southlands’, and William Sterling Purvis OBE of Bermuda. It was the gift of the former that turned the two-room schoolhouse of 1914 into the collection of buildings that formed the core of the school in the 1920s, with more modern additions being constructed through the generosity of the latter. Of Bermudians who rose to prominence after an education at Warwick Academy, we mention but two early ones, the Rev. Dr. Francis Landy Patton (1843–1932), who became the twelfth president of Princeton University, and of a name now lost hereabouts, except for a ferry stop in Paget, was the famous surgeon of Edinburgh, Sir James William Beeman Hodsdon (1853–1928). A Certificate of Merit awarded in 1913 In another very important first, this to Gwendoline Llewellyn, later Mrs. time for the social wellbeing of Bermudians, Harold L. Peniston. Warwick Academy in 1963 was the first traditionally white school to admit black students and since it has been fully integrated. The year 1972 saw the appointment of Headmaster, Dr. Joseph Marshall, the first PortugueseBermudian to hold the post, indeed it would appear that the good doctor was the first Bermudian to head up Warwick Academy, a mere 310 years after it was established as the island’s first permanent educational institution.

…About the First Bermuda Books? Part I – Richard Cotter’s ‘Sketches of Bermuda, or Somers’ Islands’
Richard Cotter was born in County Cork, Ireland, in 1776 and joined the Royal Navy when 20 years old. In 1806 he married Ellen Young and they had 8 children. Richard Cotter died in 1834 while in the Royal Navy Reserve. In 1824 he was appointed Purser on H.M.S President and was stationed in Bermuda. Apparently he could not find much information about Bermuda before coming to the island and decided that he would write a book about Bermuda while he was stationed here. In his Preface to the 1828 book Richard Cotter wrote: ‘The obscurity in which the Bermuda’s, or Somers’ Islands, have remained in point of historical facts, since they were first peopled, and my fruitless endeavours to gain information respecting the Colony, on my appointment to a public situation there, four years ago, determined me to glean all I could during a residence of that period. I am free to confess that I had many motives in collecting all I could on a place that at first sight interested me in no trifling degree. The friendly hospitality of the men, the mild and gentle demeanour of the women, that needed not a frown to awe the libertine to respect them, the curiosity natural to a citizen of the world, the wish to become useful to my country, and last, though not least, a desire to make my

researches as advantageous as possible to my numerous family, were irresistible inducements, first to collect all the materials I could, and now to trust my feelings and my fate to a generous public.’ The 76-page book is very much a view of Bermuda from a naval officer’s perspective at the very time when the British Government shipped thousands of convicts from London prisons to Bermuda to build the Royal Navy Dockyard. The book also includes several interesting lithographic illustrations by T.Y. Cotter, presumably a relative. – Email comments to: netlink@cwbda.bm

Rules of Golf

The new Rules of Golf were published on Monday. Not that it matters much to most golfers, because hardly anyone reads them. I’ve come up with 10 rules that should be in the new book. 1.) Anyone with an 18 handicap or above should in the fairway be able to lift clean and place there ball not nearer the hole, and anyone with a 36 handicap do that anywhere on the golf course. We play golf to hit nice shots not get frustrated. When I am playing for fun, (not in a match), I always put the ball on a good lie, this protects the course and I hit better shots. 2.) Disqualification for anyone doing too many practice swings, Keegan Bradley is an example for us all, NO practice swings, just gets on with it, once he is over the ball. 3.) A life ban from golf anyone that insists on telling me blow by blow of every shot they took of their round, telling everyone about your one or two good shots is fine anymore and it’s just painful! 4.) A two shot penalty to anyone on the last few holes that says something like, you’re playing well, your score is….Guaranteed to cause a bad score on the next hole 5.) Ditto for anyone who comes out with such statements as, “You’re driving it really well,” or “You haven’t missed a 4-footer all day.” 6.) Removal from the course for anyone who wears a patterned short and patterned shirt, if the shirt is patterned then the shorts MUST be plain, or vice versa. Fashion seems not to have moved forward since Caddyshack. 7.) Players to play from the appropriate tee boxes, too many people play from the wrong tees, and it slows the game up. Only players with a 5 handicap or better should play from the back tees, over 65 should automatically play from a forward tee in all competitions. I see too many players that just cannot hit the ball 8.) A two-week ban for anyone that insists that they play as a twosome then complains that the course is slow and there people in front of them. If they want to play fast, book one of the first tee times, don’t turn up at a busy weekend at 10am and bitch about the speed of play is more than 3 hours. 9.) Depending on your handicap you would be allowed a number of mulligans, I always have a bad hole especially off the tee each round and having a free go would really help me! 10.) Anything that allows people to enjoy the game more should be allowed, long putters seem to be working for tour players at the moment, but more importantly it allows players that struggle with their putting to play more. The average golfers can be excused for not wanting to learn the rules. After all, they can be confusing. I speak from experience. I passed the PGA’s Rules exam and consider myself confident of knowing the rules. But it is not easy to be sure of the rules as many times they seem very unfair. You don’t need to be a lawyer to read and understand the rules of golf but it helps!

GOLF PRO of

Dwayne Pearman, Golf Pro at Port Rort Royal Golf Course Interview By Simona Terceira
Meet Dwayne Pearman – Head Pro at Port Royal Dwayne turned pro in 1986 and has had an extraordinary career to date. Bermuda Open champion 1988/2002, Bermuda PGA champion 12 times and Belmont Invitational winner. He also qualified for the Dunhill Cup in 1989 and played in World Cup of Golf three times. What are your first memories of golf? When I was 6 years old I would walk across the golf course on my way to school looking for golf balls, I would collect them and later sell them to make some money. At the age of 8 I started working at the Port Royal Golf Course Caddy Shop, helping with golf bags. I started playing golf at the age of 8 with a buddy of mine. Today he is a pro at Rosewood Tucker’s Point. What is your best golf swings tips that you can share with us? You have to learn how to control your swing. Make sure you have a good grip first. Don’t be afraid to swing aggressively but always try to swing and be on balance, learn to control where the ball goes after you played for a while. You need a solid and balanced swing, which will allow your ball to go a long away. What are the best golf courses you’ve ever played on? Lake Nona - Florida, Kapalua -Hawaii and Port Royal – Bermuda Why is Port Royal a must play for visitors to the island? Port Royal is the best golf course on the island. It is the home of the Grand Slam of Golf, which features the winners of the, Masters U.S. Open, British Open and the PGA Championship. Port Royal was redesigned 4 years ago and is the longest and most picturesque course in Bermuda. What advice would you offer someone considering playing at Port Royal? Port Royal has many bunkers; my best advice is to try to avoid the bunkers as much as possible by aiming away from them. Who should take golf lessons? Any golfer should always strive for excellence whether they are a beginner or advanced player. I recommend golf lessons for everyone. Once you pick up a bad habit it is very hard to get rid of it. Stop at Port Royal and ask for Dwayne for golf tips or a golf lesson. You will be surprised what you can learn from him.

BRIGHTSTAR II Meet Bright Star II, a luxurious Tayana 55 foot sloop and one of Bermuda’s premier charter yachts. She is a real sailing experience. Captain Brian Billings bought and sailed Brightstar II from New Bedford Massachusetts in 2004 and arrived safely in Bermuda after an arctic January crossing through snow and ice. Previously Brian, having spent 34 years in the international finance/banking/ investment business, decided it was time for a lifestyle change and started to charter Bright Star II shortly after her arrival in Bermuda’s waters. Why is the yacht called Bright Star II? In 2003, when I changed my lifestyle, I bought Bright Star (my original yacht), which is the exact same boat as Bright Star II. I only had her for 5 weeks and Hurricane Fabian came along and well, she was a write off. The only difference is Bright Star II is a little brighter.
Captain Billings is… • Treasurer & Director of the World Match Racing Association • Chairman of the Argo Group Gold Cup match racing event in Bermuda • Chairman of the Onion Patch Committee for the Newport Bermuda Race • A member of the Organizing committee of the Newport Bermuda Race • Actively involved in other sailing events at the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club • Past Commodore of the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club • Past President of the World Match Racing Association • Past Chairman of the Tall Ships 2000 Event

Newport Bermuda Race Promises Splendid Sites By Talbot Wilson
If the winds are right on about June 17th or 18th, the Newport Bermuda Race fleet starts to arrive in Bermuda. These ocean racing boats are a spectacular site to see. Royal Bermuda Yacht Club on the harbour in downtown Hamilton is awash with colorful banners waving from more than 100 yachts moored there for the week. Signal flags fly in the Bermuda breeze and the Stars and Stripes wave boldly aboard most of the boats. About 170 boats will be moored around Bermuda at the RBYC and at the islands’ different clubs and marinas. This world-famous yacht race first sailed in 1906 is co-organized by the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club and the Cruising Club of America. The action starts in Newport, Rhode Island on Friday June 15th and finishes off of St. David’s Lighthouse after a long, 635 mile ‘Thrash to the Onion Patch.’ Bermuda is the official host of the race and Bermuda’s Gosling Rum is the official Rum and Butterfield Bank is sponsoring commemorative race ties for all skippers, navigators and watch captains. View Finishers from St. David’s Lighthouse From the lighthouse grounds high up on St. David’s Head, the view of yachts pushing hard for those last few miles to the finish is a special treat. Plan to visit Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday for the best chance of viewing some yachts crossing the line. If your timing is right, the Lighthouse Committee volunteers will welcome visitors to the tower for a tour. Follow the progress of the yachts with live tracking on the web— www.bermudarace. com so you can be there when your favorite boat finishes. Royal Bermuda Yacht Club Hospitality During the Bermuda Race Week, the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club invites everyone to enjoy the club’s hospitality. The marina’s docks are open to visitors who want to see the latest in sailboat designs and equipment as well classic yachts reliving their historical glory. Yachts in the RBYC marina will range from about 35 to 100 feet.

The bar is world famous for Gosling’s Rum Dark ‘n Stormy cocktails. Sailors will gladly share a tale of the sea. While at RBYC, you may also view the main prizes for the race, the St. David’s Lighthouse and the Gibbs Hill Lighthouse Trophies. These silver replicas of the lighthouses are two of the most coveted racing trophies in the world. You may also view the world famous King Edward VII Gold Cup, awarded annually to the winner of the Argo Group Gold Cup for Stage 8 of the Alpari World Match Racing Tour in October at the RBYC. The RBYC Anniversary Regatta presented by Butterfield Bank The Newport Bermuda Race is the second leg of the Onion Patch Series. The series includes the New York Yacht Club Annual Regatta presented by Rolex in Newport RI, the Bermuda Race and the RBYC Anniversary Regatta presented by Butterfield Bank. Telephone 441 2384842 THE ROYAL NAVAL DOCKYARD Ireland Island, Sandys Work began on this massive complex in 1809, not long after the conclusion of the Napoleonic Wars and just before the War of 1812. Envisioned as a strategic British military outpost that would make Bermuda the “Gibraltar of the West,” the Royal Naval Dockyard was built by slave and convict labour. The Dockyard locked its gates in 1951. Since then, the seventy-five acre site has been painstakingly renovated to accommodate museums, a movie theatre, restaurants, The Arts Centre and the Bermuda Craft Market. NATIONAL MUSEUM OF BERMUDA Ireland Island, Sandys Located in the Keep of the Royal Naval Dockyard, this museum has become one of the island’s most frequently visited destinations since being opened by HM Queen Elizabeth II in 1975. Its popularity has increased even more with the recent restoration and opening of Commissioner’s House. Elsewhere on the complex, exhibits chronicle both Bermuda’s association with the Royal Navy and its own interesting maritime history. In addition to a collection of Bermuda-made boats, there are relics from the Sea Venture, maps, the famous Tucker Treasure—collected from the sixteenth-century Spanish galleon the San Pedro—and many more artifacts. Open Monday to Sunday 9:30am-4:00pm (last admission 4pm). Adults $10, seniors $8, children under 13 FREE. For further information telephone 441 234-1333. COMMISSIONER’S HOUSE National Museum of Bermuda, Royal Naval Dockyard Located within the confines of the National Museum of Bermuda, Commissioner’s House dominates this complex and entire surroundings from its elevated position. Largely constructed between 1823 and 1828, this commanding Georgian ‘house’ epitomizes British imperial style, power and engineering wherewithal during the nineteenth century. An experimental building in several regards, Commissioner’s House may have been the first domestic project anywhere to use cast iron to support

Open during regular Museum hours. ST. GEORGE’S AND EASTERN PARISHES St. George’s — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — is where it all began, when in July 1609 the Sea Venture — en route from England to the new colony of Jamestown Virginia — encountered a violent storm and was shipwrecked on Bermuda’s reefs less than a mile off what is now St. Catherine’s Point. Miraculously, all on board survived the disaster and rowed ashore to Gates Bay, located at the eastern end of St. George’s. ST. GEORGE’S VISITOR INFORMATION CENTRE Town of St. George The St. George’s Visitor Information Centre (VIC) conveniently located at 7 King’s Square, St. George’s. (next to the cannon and ducking stool) Here you will find up to date information on transport, events and attractions. VIC open Monday - Saturday 10:00am -5:00pm Telephone 441 297-0556 World Heritage Centre Town of St. George Located in the Town of St. George’s, the World Heritage Centre is a key orientation and resource point for visitors of all ages. Celebrating the mission of The St. George’s Foundation, the World Heritage Centre is central to the promotion of the Town and Parish of St. George’s. Lively, interactive histories are told through state-of-the art technology, participatory talks, historical re-enactments, and an (ongoing programme of dramatic presentations, cultural activities and special events). Open to the public Monday through Saturday 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Admission is $5.00 (adults), $2.00 (children/students). 297-5791 or visit www.stgeorgesfoundation.org THE DELIVERANCE Ordnance Island, St. George’s A full-scale replica of the Deliverance, one of the two vessels that transported Sea Venture survivors on to Virginia in 1610, is located on Ordnance Island across from King’s Square. The St. George’s Foundation have restored the Deliverance and it is now open Monday – Saturday, 10 am – 4 pm. Admission is $3.00 (adults), $2.00 (children/students). KING’S SQUARE Town of St. George The official, ceremonial centre of St. George’s, King’s Square acquired its name in 1818 when it was named in honour of King George III. Every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday until November 30, 2011, the town crier, colorfully decked out in tunic, breeches and tricorn hat, rings his bell and shouts “Oyez! Oyez!” (Hear Ye!). This is to convene his `tribunal,’ which will mete seventeenthcentury justice to a nagging wench at the ducking stool nearby. By all means try out the stocks for yourself. This is a fun photo opportunity. TUCKER HOUSE Water Street The only museum in St. George’s furnished as a period residence, Tucker House offers a glimpse into the lifestyle of a prosperous eighteenth-century Bermudian merchant. Built around 1752, Tucker family treasures are in evidence throughout the house, including fine family portraits by Joseph Blackburn. A Bermuda National Trust property, Tucker House is open Wednesdays & Saturdays, 10:00am - 2:00pm Admission $5. 297-0545

THE GLOBE HOTEL Globe Hotel, King’s Square Across the street from St. Peter’s Church, this distinctive dwelling was built in 1700 by Governor Samuel Day. During the American Civil War its upper floor was occupied by a Confederate Shipping Agent from where he organized the shipment of arms, uniforms and war supplies through the Union blockade to the South. It now houses the Confederate Museum and hosts the “Rogues and Runners” exhibit, highlighting Bermuda’s participation in the American Civil War. Open Mon. - Sat. 10am-4pm. Admission $5.students $2. 297-1423. ST. PETER’S, Their Majesties Chappell Duke of York Street Situated in appropriate loftiness above the main street of St. George’s, St. Peter’s Church is one of the island’s most beloved landmarks and is the oldest Anglican church continuously occupied in the New World. The first church on the site was constructed in 1612 of native cedar and a thatched roof. This original edifice was replaced seven years later by a more permanent structure that lasted almost a hundred years, until the hurricane of 1712. Following this disaster, the church was again rebuilt. Open Mon. - Sat. 10am-4pm. Anglican service 11:15am Sundays. THE OLD RECTORY Broad Alley, St. George’s, behind St. Peter’s Church Built in 1699, this charming cottage on one of the numerous picturesque back streets in St. George’s is one of Bermuda’s oldest houses. Acquired in 1700 by Captain George Dew, an unsuccessful privateer who became a St. George’s assemblyman, The Old Rectory acquired its current name when it became the residence of the Rev. Alexander Richardson in the last quarter of the eighteenth century. Outisde viewing only. ST. GEORGE’S HISTORICAL SOCIETY MUSEUM Duke of Kent Street and Featherbed Alley Built around 1734 as a private residence, Mitchell House is a fine example of eighteenth-century Bermudian domestic architecture and has been home to the St. George’s Historical Society since 1920. Open Mon, Tues, Wed, Thurs, Sat. Adults $5, Children under 12 $2 BERMUDIAN HERITAGE Museum Samaritan’s Lodge, Intersection of York and Water Streets St. George’s newest museum was formed in 1994 to preserve and document the history of black culture and achievement in Bermuda. Displays include a fascinating assortment of memorabilia relating to the many areas in which blacks have made a contribution since first arriving on the island in 1616: shipbuilding, piloting, construction, nursing, music, sports and politics, to name a few. Open Tues-Sat 10am-3pm. Admission $4. 297-4126. CORPORATION OF ST. GEORGE Town of St. George Town Hall, the handsome building commanding King’s Square and bearing the town crest was begun in 1802, a few years after the Corporation of St. George’s was founded in 1797. The State House, located up a gentle elevation behind Town Hall, is one of the island’s oldest, most historically important buildings. Erected around 1620 by Governor Nathaniel Butler, the State House is open to the public 10am-4pm on Wednesdays only. (10 - 2 May 1 - Oct 31) THE UNFINISHED CHURCH Duke of Kent Street, St. George’s The impressive Gothic vestige that looms over the town of St. George’s was begun in 1870 as a replacement for St. Peter’s, which had fallen into a state of serious disrepair. Outside viewing only. The structure is unsafe – please heed the warning signs. Designed by William Hay, the Scottish-born architect who later drew the plans for Hamilton’s cathedral, the St. George’s church was abandoned in 1899 when near completion. FORT ST. CATHERINE & MUSEUM St. Catherine’s Point, St. George’s Fort St. Catherine stands on the site of one of the four towers that Governor Richard Moore erected along Bermuda’s coast around 1613. None of these original towers, the first English forts in the New World, survive. The present, completely restored structure, dates from the mid-nineteenth century and is home to fascinating exhibits including military guns and weapons. 75% of the fort is wheelchair accessible. Open Mon-Fri 10:00am-4:00pm.

CARTER HOUSE Southside Road, St. David’s Carter House was probably built in the 1720s by John Hayward and his wife Martha, reputedly a descendant of Christopher Carter, one of the two Sea Venture survivors who stayed behind when the vessel’s other passengers continued on to Virginia in 1610. Acquired by the St. David’s Historical Society, this small house with its unusual ‘welcoming arm’ stairs has been converted into a museum that commemorates the pre-war agrarian traditions of St. David’s. Open Saturday 10:00am-4:00pm. ST. DAVID’S LIGHTHOUSE Mount Hill, St. David’s Constructed of Bermuda stone, this 55-foot structure is one of two local lighthouses. Open 9-4, Mon-Fri from Nov - Mar. Admission is free. CRYSTAL CAVES & FANTASY CAVES Wilkinson Avenue, Bailey’s Bay Two young boys discovered this magical underground world comprising stalactites, stalagmites and a clear, fifty-five foot deep lake by accident in 1905. After 30 years in the business Angelo says his next step will be retirement, but not anytime soon. Angelo has been the Executive Chef at La Trattoria for 21 years and before La Trattoria he was the Chef at Little Venice Restaurant, both popular spots owned by the MEF group. Where are you originally from & how did you end up in Bermuda? I am from the Amalfi Coast in Southern Italy. I went to cooking school just south of my hometown in Salerno, did 3 years and then another year in Italy. A former Maitre d for the Little Venice Group who was from my hometown approached me when he was home vacationing. He was looking for good staff. Not long after I arrived in Bermuda. You have been here for a long time, what do you enjoy most about La Trattoria? There is never a dull moment here at La Trattoria. I am always on the go and keeping very busy. I enjoy being here and Bermuda has been a great place to raise my family. How is La Trattoria different from other Bermuda restaurants? La Trattoria is a family restaurant and Bermuda’s residents and visitors love coming here because the food is great, affordable and we cater to small intimate settings and large groups. We have many birthday celebrations, rehearsal dinners, retirement parties, bachelor/bachelorette parties, etc. We also offer catering and often cater school lunches, office lunches, etc. We also keep busy with 2 airport locations. We offer a traditional menu and whenever we can, we buy local fresh ingredients. For example

RESTAURANT review
Eliana’s Southside, St. David’s Eliana’s in Hebrew means, “God has answered”. Eliana’s is definitely worth the drive to St. David’s offering a great wine selection, absolutely delicious dishes and excellent service. When we walked into the quaint restaurant located in South Side, St. David’s, just next door to Bermuda’s popular Pizza House. The first thing we feasted our eyes upon was fresh baked and decorated cakes, on display we suspected, to remind you to keep room for dessert! Another great feature was the waterfall, which combined with dim lighting and just the right soft background music allowed us to escape and forget where we were. Franz Egenoff, Chef and Managing Director said to us that often his customers look at their watches and can’t believe that hours have gone by. He also says, if you want something fast, grab a slice of pizza next door. Eliana’s is for those who want to relax and savor every last bite of their meal, no matter how long it takes. First to arrive were warm fresh baked rolls. Simona ordered a house red wine, Barefoot Cabernet. I ordered a sparkling water. We reviewed the menu and everything looked amazing so we asked Franz to surprise us with a few appetizers and main courses. Our waiter started us off with the house-made Breaded Calamari and the Shrimp, Scallop and Lobster Sampler. First of all, the calamari was perfection. The seafood sampler was also amazing. Cooked perfectly and complimented with the most delicious sauces, including a roasted pepper mango salsa, never to be forgotten. We must have spooned up every last drop. Our waiter also brought us a fruit and sorbet plate which at first we thought was odd however once we started to eat it, we realized that the fruit and sorbet literally cleaned our palettes and we were soon ready for the next course! We then tried Fish Chowder that did not need any sherry peppers or rum, it was delicious and full of fish, spices and everything nice. The Lobster Bisque was also very nicely done and presented with a juicy piece of lobster in the centre. F.Y.I during Lobster season, Eliana’s is known to be one of the best places to go for Lobster. Bermuda Lobster season starts in September!!! Next we received from our wonderful waiter a chilled saucer with sorbet. It is the
Where to Eat & Drink 85
small touches that really made this experience so wonderful. Something you just don’t get in many restaurants these days. Next we received a house salad that is served with all main courses. It was a work of art, fresh vegetables wrapped with cucumber. The Roast Rack of Lamb arrived perfectly cooked placed on top of a delicious cornbread, garlic and tomato stuffing bed. Next the Filet Steak Eliana’s that has a breaded crust around it and it is to die for. I could go back and order it again right now, just thinking about it. Each dish was served with fresh vegetables, potatoes and or rice. Finally we tried the Rockfish Eliana’s, pan fried with my favorite, mango and roasted pepper salsa. I was certainly happy to see that again!
By the time we finished dinner we decided the cakes still smiling at us from across the room would have to wait until next time. Instead our waiter brought us each a chocolate moose, always the perfect light end to a meal. Eliana’s seats 30 people and is open Tuesday – Sunday from 5:30pm - until. Be sure to make a reservation if you are up for an unforgetable trip to St. David’s. Make sure to leave room for dessert! 441 777 0555

Tiffany SwanN
Bartender | Snorkel Park Never have I met a bartender with a signature like Tiffany. She loves shots and specializes in making them, but the really cool thing is that after mixing and before pouring she lets her customers smell the shot and boy oh boy do they smell amazing!!! Better than scented candles. It is Tiffany’s 4th year at Snorkel Park. She started out waitressing at the RBYC when she was just 17 and as soon as she was able, Tiffany started bartending. Tiffany is also a part of the Bartenders Unlimited Company, she works at concerts, private events, etc. On Sunday nights you can find Tiffany bartending at the Wine Cellar, Fairmont Southampton. Sounds like a busy girl doesn’t she, well it doesn’t stop there. Tiffany is a freelance Graphic Designer by day, her company is called Creative Illusions. In June she will be launching her first magazine called Sport Bermuda. For more info email her at crelusions@gmail.com. You can also meet Tiffany in person at Snorkel Park on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays & Saturday Nights. Don’t forget to order a shot and let your senses go wild, as you smell it before tasting it!
Snorkel Park is like Spring Break every night. Shot contests, beer funneling contests and regular old drinking contests. The entire upper bar turns into a Coyote Ugly style bar. Black lights, colour lights, DJ’s, it’s the place to be!
Blue Tequila Sour Blue Curacao Silver Tequila Sour Mix *Mix ingredients in a shaker with ice and strain into a shot glass. Smells bitterseweet!

LET HIM EAT STEAK
It’s a trite, but often-repeated saying: The way to a man’s heart is through his stomach. So why, when Father’s Day rolls around, do we buy endless ties and “message” T shirts? Is the way to his heart through his clothes? Not likely. It’s the stomach, people, and that means good food. For many men, good food comes in the form of a great steak. So what if you’re not a steak eater, or you eat it only in restaurants and the thought of purchasing a raw slab scares you to death? Fear not. It’s not that complicated, really. It’s important to know your cuts of meat before planning the menu. You don’t want to cook your dad a tasteless, tough piece of leather. You might not notice the difference, but let’s face it – he will. Since you’ll likely be grilling, it’s important to know the best cuts of meat for the grill. You want to choose the most tender portions of meat for grilling. I consider these cuts of beef to be the best for grilling: Rib Eye T-Bone Porterhouse New York steak If there is the word “loin” on the package, you’re in good shape, though most grill experts agree the T-bone is the most superior cut of beef for grilling. It stays tender and juicy, and is thick enough to withstand a fair amount of time on the grill without overcooking. Stay away from top round or anything with “round” or “chuck” in the name. These will not cook well on the grill. Continued on pg 104

104 What’s Cooking Bermuda Here is one of my favorite T-bone recipes. T-Bone Steak with Bourbon Mushroom Sauce Servings: serves 4 Ingredients: 4- T-bone steaks 1 onion, sliced salt and pepper ¾ cup chicken broth cooking oil 1 tablespoon grainy mustard 2 tablespoons butter ¼ cup bourbon 8 ounces sliced mushrooms Directions: 1
Season the T-bone steak on both sides with salt and pepper. Let steak rest at room temperature for 15 minutes. Rub both sides of the steak with cooking oil.
2. Heat the grill to a medium heat. When hot, add the steak to the grill and let cook for 5 minutes. Flip steak and cook an additional 5 minutes. Flip the steak again and cook for 5-7 minutes, depending on the thickness of steak and desired temperature.
For 1-inch thick steak, I recommend 5 minutes and then check internal temperature of the steak.
For 1 1/2 inch steaks, I recommend checking temperature at the 7 minute mark. 135F = rare 160F = medium 145F = medium rare 170F = well-done 3. While the steak is on the grill, let‘s cook the mushroom sauce. Heat a sauté pan over medium-high heat with the butter. When the butter starts bubbling, add in the mushrooms and the onions. Stir and cook until onions are fragrant and softened.
4. Pour in the chicken broth, mustard, bourbon and season with salt and pepper to taste. Turn heat to low and let simmer for 2 minutes. Just before serving, pour over the steak. So fire up the grill and give dad the Father’s Day he deserves! SUGGESTED WINE BY APRIL GOSLING NAUDE: Doña Paula Estate Malbec Intense violet color. Aromas of black fruits, violets and spice on the nose. Plum, black cherries and licorice notes are prominent. Sweet, round and ample in the mouth, with great balance and freshness. Good concentration of flavours. Soft tannins and persistent finish. 100% Argentinean Malbec.
