Bill Ming Scott sits down with Bill IN 2004 AND THE AFTERMATH OF HURRICANE FABIAN, THE GOVERNMENT OF BERMUDA DECIDED TO COMMISSION A MEMORIAL TO BERMUDIAN’S “LOST AT SEA”. A COMPETITION WAS CREATED AND ALL BERMUDIAN ARTISTS GOT TO WORK. YOU WON AND THE FIRST PIECE OF PUBLIC ART IN BERMUDA WAS BORN. PLEASE ELABORATE FOR THIS WEEK ON YOUR SCULPTURE, ”FIGURE HEAD”.
As an ex seaman who worked aboard the Queen of Bermuda I was inspired and even humbled when my design was chosen as maritime life is very close to my art and ideas. Despite the solemnity of the Figurehead I wanted this sculpture to be a beacon that acts as a guiding and welcoming sight pointing to the skies. Symbolism plays an important part in this sculpture i.e. the paddle for that proverbial creek, an hourglass represents time running out, life preserver to keep one’s head above water, dividers as compass points on maps and a log book. This memorial is to honour our fishermen and women and all Bermudians lost to their loved ones, a place for families to seek some solace and closure for ‘those lost at sea’. INCLUDED IN THE BERMUDA NATIONAL GALLERY’S 2010 BACARDI BIENNIAL EXHIBITION OF CONTEMPORARY BERMUDA ART, YOU HAVE CREATED A PIECE OF ART WORK THAT MAKES THE VIEWER FEEL THAT THEY ARE ACTUALLY INSIDE THE MULTI- MEDIA PAINTING. TITLE: HANDS ACROSS DA TABLE “PASS IT ON”. HOW DID THIS IMAGE COME TO LIFE AND WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO COMMUNICATE TO THE VIEWER?

ARTIST OF THE MONTH – Continued from page 24 inspiration behind this image. Nicholls is an Australian aboriginal artist who marries western and Aboriginal culture to form a style called traditional contemporary. I want people viewing this piece to empathize with the family and I intended that the image would become a shared experience with the viewer envisaging themselves on the other side of the table. The kite, floating island, spilt wine and skeletal fish symbolize forewarnings of impending perils. African fishermen head for Europe because their fishing grounds are under siege from large factory ships and as a result the family is split forming snap shots of a by gone era.
ART MATTERS – Continued from page 23 Craft Market is under the management of Audrey Brackstone. The idea of a craft market goes back to at least 1962, however, when there was a similar craft enterprise in the Hamilton City Hall, where the Bermuda National Gallery is now located. The Bermuda Craft Market is located in the Dockyard, across from the well-known Frog and Onion restaurant and near the entrance to the Bermuda National Museum. It is a large, open room, noted for its hum of activity. It is well worth a visit when you are out in the Dockyard, but do allow yourself, sufficient time to take in all that they offer, like an hour or two. Sometimes, when I have visited, the jam and jelly makers are giving out samples. If you are fortunate enough to be there at the time this is happening, try them out. They have unusual and exotic flavors. The Bermuda Craft Market is open daily from either 10:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. or on ship days, 9:30 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. ANTHONY PETTIT BERMUDA MAPS, BOOKS, PRINTS & PAINTINGS Call 441 292-2482 for an appointment, www.anthonypettit.com Anthony Pettit is a dealer in most types of antiquities relating to Bermuda, particularly maps, books, prints, paintings and ephemera. PGA Grand Slam of Golf The PGA Grand Slam of Golf field is now complete with the addition of the PGA Championship winner Martin Kaymer. Kaymer could have been on the reality show Survivor as he outlasted and outplayed the deepest field of any of golf ’s championships at the tough Whistling Straits course in Kohler, Wisconsin. The PGA Grand Slam of Golf will be held at the beautiful Port Royal Golf Club on October 18th – 20th, 2010. The PGA Grand Slam of Golf is the most difficult to qualify for as you must be one of the four major championship winners of the Masters, US Open, British Open or PGA Championship. The field will have a true international flavor as the foursome will include American Phil Mickelson, Northern Irishman Graeme McDowell, South African Louis Oosthuizen and German Martin Kaymer. The tournament will be covered by TNT and will be broadcast to more than 99 million in the United States and 100 countries internationally. For those that would enjoy watching the action in person, tickets are available and can be purchased at www.pgagrandslamofgolf.com . Should any of the foursome not be able to attend, the replacement will be chosen through the Major Championship Points List comprised of past major championship winners who competed in this years majors. Port Royal Golf Club is a Robert Trent Jones design. Jones once stated that it may have been his best work outside the United States. The course recently completed a $14 million renovation which included the removal of more than 1200 trees and the redesign and construction of new tees, green complexes and a two new golf holes. One of the most recognized changes was the addition of a new tee on the challenging 16th. The hole can play 235 yards over the Atlantic to a green perched precariously out over the water. The 16th has always been the most photographed hole in Bermuda. The hole will be a challenge for the worlds’ best in October. Port Royal Golf Club is open to the public. Director of Golf Andrew Brooks is a great host and welcomes golfers daily to his club. Tee Times can be arranged by calling 441-234-0974. Port Royal Golf Club is also on the rotation for the Bermuda Goodwill Championship www.bermudagoodwill. org and is a favorite of the more than 100 teams that participate each year. You’re a Zero One of the great loves of my life was what American author Louisa May Alcott might have called a little woman. She was a size zero. In most areas of human endeavour, being told “You’re a zero” would be an insult, but women operate on levels incomprehensible to chaps. Although I have lately become as fat as a government budget, my brother has a 28-inch waist. He eats much more than I do, but is one of those people who is always in motion. Sitting still, he’s doing 1,000 miles an hour. Commerce, the machinery that underpins our lives, makes life difficult for people such as my brother and ex-girlfriend. She was forever shopping in children’s stores — where, it should be said, she was able to buy clothes that none of her Size 12 friends had. She was what’s known as ‘highmaintenance’, i.e. her life plan was to spend as much money as possible, as often as possible, on anything she liked. We owe such people a big vote of thanks. They keep the economy going, while the rest of us dutifully behave with fiscal prudence. In fact, my girlfriend didn’t work; I kept her world turning, while also saving some pennies for our old age. I achieved this heroic double act by spending nothing on myself. Nothing, to four decimal places, is the exact amount most men spend on themselves, if you ignore beer and baseball hats. My brother is also forced to shop in kids’ stores, although he is much less lucky than my girlfriend was. She was 4 foot 10, and was therefore able to find a wide array of clothes that fit her. My brother is a foot taller, and few lads with 28-inch waists, other than teenaged giraffes, approach six feet. Unable to find clothes he liked, my bro gave up on fashion altogether. He wears whatever he has, and only buys something (a) when he desperately needs it and (b) when he can find it — i.e., rarely, if ever. My ex, however, was a fashion plate or, more accurately, a fashion saucer. I vividly remember buying her a coat in New York City that cost about the same as a naval destroyer. It was a lovely garment, I’d admit, but fashion dictates that a coat lasts just one season. The following year, we bought her an even more expensive coat. Buy new garments regularly, and success, love and happiness will be yours, is the message from the fashion industry. In my ex’s case, it worked. The more expensive the garment, the better she felt. (And the worse I felt, on account of the cost.) But here’s the rub. Since I ballooned up to a 78-inch waist, I don’t have a girlfriend, so I feel worse (we’ll say, for sake of argument, although in fact, I now have enough money to buy my own navy.) So, to that extent, fashion can be said to make almost everyone feel better. You read it here last.

D o You Know?
… About Bermuda’s remarkable sisters – Ethel and Catherine Tucker?
Ethel and Kate, born in 1874 and 1879 respectively, were two of the eight children of Robert Richard Jennings Tucker and Leonora Mary Tucker of The Lane House in Paget, now Tamarisk Hall. While raising a large family, Catherine and Ethel Tucker their artistic mother found time to design wallpaper and paint Christmas cards and that talent was obviously picked up by young Ethel and Kate. When Miss Eliza D. Williams’ school was established on Reid Street in Hamilton, Ethel was keen to take art lessons from an American lady teaching at the school. She was also encouraged by Mr. James B. Heyl, who hired her to illuminate the margins of photograph albums he was selling at his drug store at Heyl’s Corner. Getting one shilling per page, Ethel’s artistic talent was already paying off handsomely. In her late teens Ethel was off to New York to study art at the New York School of Applied Design for Women and after returning home for a holiday, took her younger sister Kate back to New York to study painting too. While studying, the Tucker sisters worked at a variety of jobs and eventually spent eleven years in New York – designing art embroideries, working for an interior decorating studio on Fifth Avenue, and teaching art themselves. Before World War I they decided to return home and branch out on their own, opening a souvenir shop on Queen Street, in what is now the Bermuda Library. Their beautiful water-colour paintings of Bermuda soon became so popular with tourists that they decided to have colour reproductions made. Already very much a business woman, Kate travelled to Germany to get in touch with a well-known colour printer, and soon Ethel and Kate found themselves in the picture postcard business. In 1915 they opened The Little Green Shop, now the Perot Post Office, and this became their shop for more than 40 years, selling original paintings, reproductions and postcards, as well as a wide range of souvenirs. After World War I it was impossible to get colour printing done in Germany and Ethel and Kate negotiated with J. Salmon Ltd., the colour printers in Kent, England, who would print their postcards, notelets, playing cards and calendars for rest of the 20th century. Their postcards alone numbered 100 different. When the Prince of Wales – later King Edward

All illustrations are from ‘Glimpses of Bermuda’ by Ethel and Catherine Tucker VIII and after his abdication Duke of Windsor – came to Bermuda in 1921, he purchased 20 paintings by the Tucker sisters. His mother, Queen Mary, was obviously impressed with the paintings and ordered some for herself. These are now part of the Queen’s famous collection of water-colour paintings. Another enterprise that Ethel and Kate operated was the Little Green Door Tea Shoppe in Barrs Bay, just outside Hamilton. Here they hosted Mark Twain, Eugene O’Neill and Rudyard Kipling, among many other luminaries. Novels and short stories of the period often featured the Little Green Door as the setting for a social rendezvous or romantic interlude. On a masthead outside the Little Green Door they proudly flew their own ‘House Flag’ – yellow with a black teapot, signaling ‘Tea is ready’. Unfortunately the flag violated a regulation forbidding advertising signs against the skyline. When a zealous new Chief of Police arrived in Bermuda in 1934, he decided to enforce several flagrantly violated regulations, including the removal of Ethel and Kate’s flag which had been flying outside the Little Green Door for 25 years. So when a police constable reluctantly approached Miss Kate and ordered her to remove the flag, she flatly refused. When taken to court, the Tucker sisters argued that the Furness Withy Line flew a flag with an ‘F’ and the Princess Hotel used one with a ‘P’. The court, however, ruled that these were ‘house flags’ whereas the tea pot was advertising, and ordered the flag to be removed within one month. Ethel and Kate were far from defeated. They flew the tea pot flag for exactly one more month and then raised a new yellow flag bearing a large ‘T’. As expected the police again intervened, whereupon Kate innocently claimed that the ‘T’ had nothing to do with advertising. The ‘T’ stood for Tucker, not Tea, and was her house flag. Out-maneuvered, the Chief of Police gave up and the flag continued to fly until the Little Green Door closed in 1938. Dubbed the ‘Bermuda Tea Party’, the story made international headlines. Because of Bermuda’s short tourist season in the early 20th century, lasting from Christmas to just after Easter, the Tucker sisters opened other Little Green Doors and painted at Muskoka Lakes in Canada, Lake Placid in the Adirondacks, and in Florida. They also opened an antique shop on Burnaby Hill with a branch at the Castle Harbour Hotel. By breaking through the rigid conventions of their childhood, these two outstanding Bermudian ladies were certainly far ahead of their time, yet their love of Bermuda is summed up in a quotation from their book ‘Glimpses of Bermuda’: Nobody hurries in Bermuda. “Tomorrow comes soon enough, today is delightful, and one is still enjoying yesterday.” – E-mail comments to: netlink@cwbda.bm

Alexander Richardson in the last quarter of the eighteenth century. ST. Dining in Bermuda is an experience on its own. Imagine that you’re at one of Bermuda’s pink beaches savoring a local delicacy, the Bermuda fishcake sandwich. If you would like to experience what Bermudians love, then you would order the works. An old-timer once told me that Bermudians invented “the works.” Even if that statement isn’t accurate, the Bermuda fish sandwich with the works is like nothing I have experienced before. He proudly relates how he has cooked for famous people such as President Carter, Michael Douglas, David Bowie, Iman and even the President of Italy. “I always chose to work in an environment of a very high standard, alongside many respected head chefs”, thus he trained and worked in some of Italy’s most prestigious hotels and restaurants….always remembering that to be the best chef meant “your heart was in your hands!” Today Chef Livio prides himself on maintaining this rule so, with very few exceptions, everything on his menu is made in his kitchen. He emphasizes that he likes to ‘create’ what his customers want, then acknowledges that this should be the role of a true chef, one who has been trained by the best. The happy atmosphere in his lively restaurant is enhanced by the fun music, the wonderful indoor/ outdoor bar and dining, and of course the views of the waterfront. “When my customers see their food, I want them to say, “Wow! The plate looks so beautiful and enticing,” he said smiling. It is not unusual to see Chef Livio chatting with the diners in his restaurant. Ask to meet him… we know he would love to meet you! Bermuda Pumpkin Soup… HMMMM, HMMM Good People say that we don’t really have seasons in Bermuda. That’s just not true! On any given summer day, the temperature can soar into the upper 80’s while winter temps can plummet to the mid 50’s! Come on…if that’s not a drastic change of season, I don’t know what is. Fall is a season that reminds us that nothing is permanent, and as daylight hours wane and temperatures cool, it is a call to set aside a bit of time to think about the changes you’re going to make this year on your dinner table. Maybe it’s time for some exciting new menu items. I made this soup yesterday as part of my plans to cook something with pumpkin every week this fall. I wanted to develop some great recipes for my new cookbook and, since Bermudians love pumpkin, I thought this would be a creative way to go about this. While my wife and I were eating this scrumptious soup together she made the following declarations: “If they served food on the Moon, this would be it.” “I’ve never tasted anything this good before.” “I’m so glad you are good at the art of cooking.” This made me look at her twice? “I could eat this every day.” Really? I thought. “I’m tingling because this is so good.” Here is the recipe for Velvety Pumpkin Soup with Bacon and Blue Cheese. I recommend looking at what ingredients are available to you and making substitutions based on that. For example, I substituted the garlic and onion because I didn’t have a shallot. Others probably don’t have raw, dark wildflower honey or country bacon and would prefer regular bacon or your favorite honey, it won’t matter. I got most of my ingredients at our local farmer’s market, but you could easily get most of these ingredients at any grocery store.

Ingredients 2 pumpkins, Cooked in the oven at 325 degrees for 30 minutes until tender. Place the meat of the pumpkin in a mixer and puree (add some Chicken broth if needed) 1 quart chicken broth 1 cup half-and-half 1 onion, sliced in half-inch slices 2 garlic cloves, minced 1/4 cup raw, dark, wildflower, local honey 2 tablespoons butter 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper 1/2 lb. local country bacon 1/2 lb. crumbled blue cheese to taste 1. Put pumpkin puree, chicken broth, half-and-half, onion, garlic, honey, 2. Cook on high for about 2 hours. 3. Serve in bowls and with blue cheese sprinkled on top as desired, garnish with parsley * I like to remove the seeds and stringy parts before I put my pumpkin in the oven. I also separate out the seeds and roast them in the oven when I’m done making the puree. Pumpkin seeds are my favorite snack. To roast the pumpkin seeds, set your oven to 350 degrees, put seeds on a cookie sheet and sprinkle with salt or seasonings of your choice (I like to mix a little bit of ground mustard, sage, and Toney’s Chachere’s Cajun seasoning.). Bake in oven for 5 minutes. Eat pumpkin seeds in the same way you would eat sunflower seeds. Enjoy the fall festivities and Goblins and Ghosts, but most importantly don’t be scared of the kitchen.
