Welcome to the City of Hamilton It is my honor, as the Mayor, to welcome you to the City of Hamilton, one of the smallest cities in the world, rich in history, culture and heritage. The original Town of Hamilton was incorporated by an Act of the Bermuda Legislature in 1793. Located in a sheltered harbour in the central and largest parish, Pembroke, it was named in honour of the then Governor, Captain Henry Hamilton. The town quickly became the capital of Bermuda when the seat of Government was transferred from St. George’s in 1815. Following the completion of the Cathedral of the Most Holy Trinity, situated some 400 yards east of the present City Hall, the status of City was conferred upon the Town of Hamilton in 1897 to commemorate the Diamond Jubilee of Her Majesty Queen Victoria. The City of Hamilton has a resident population of about 1,100 and an estimated daytime population of approximately 13,340 (40% of Bermuda’s working population). This number increases significantly when tourists are added to the equation. In addition to the excellent cuisine that can be found in the city’s many varied restaurants, the shopping is easy and the historic sites are a must see. I can attest to the fact that Hamilton is a delightful capital to get around on foot. Measuring about a quarter square mile, the entire area can be walked in about 30 minutes however, exploring, discovering and enjoying the sites, both historic and new, can take hours, maybe even days. Anyone wishing to explore the City in depth can participate in the Walkway of History tour that was created as part of Bermuda’s 400th Anniversary, in 2009. Plaques have been installed in the sidewalk at various points along the route to identify important sites of architectural, social, cultural or historical significance in the City. This selfguided tour starts and ends on Church Street in front of the City Hall, and enables the pedestrian to learn about the history of the city and may be taken as a whole or in parts. Some of the sights to discover include: City Hall Opened in 1960, the building is of traditional Bermuda architecture with a Scandinavian influence in respect of the tower. Last year we celebrated the building’s 50th anniversary by reproducing a number of activities that took place at the opening, including inviting some of the workers who helped with the construction. City Hall’s amenities include a theatre, two galleries housing the Bermuda National Gallery and the Bermuda Society of Arts, the Mayor’s Parlour, and the administrative offices of the City of Hamilton. Victoria Park Bandstand Painstakingly dismantled, refurbished and reassembled in 2009 the Victorian Bandstand was originally shipped to Bermuda in 1888 to commemorate Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee in June 1887. Wesley Square A purpose built recreational area officially opened in July 2009 to commemorate the men and women who in 1959, with bravery, tenacity and a vision for a better Bermuda staged a peaceful theatre boycott and protested for equality, freedom and the end to segregation. City Parks There are four large public parks within the City of Hamilton that are open to the general public between 8am to sunset every day. They are: Fort Hamilton, Barr’s Bay Park, Par-la-Ville Park and my favorite Victoria Park. Again, welcome to Hamilton, Bermuda at it best. For more information visit www. cityofhamilton.bm.

PGA GRAND SLAM OF GOLF October 17- 19 Port Royal Golf Course Southampton The PGA Grand Slam of Golf is the season-ending showcase of the year’s 4 Major Champions. The 2011 competitors are Charl Schwartzel (Masters), Rory Mcilroy (U.S. Open), Darren Clark (Open Championship, Keegan Bradley (PGA Championship). For the third year in a row, the PGA Grand Slam of Golf will be held at Bermuda’s beautiful Port Royal Golf Course, featuring a $1.35 million purse, with the winner receiving $600,000; second place $300,000; third place $250,000; and fourth place $200,000. The PGA of America partners with the Fairmont Southampton Resort to provide visitors with vacation packages built around the Grand Slam fan experience. Port Royal is a public golf course. The Bermuda National Gallery’s Autumn Exhibitions. The Bermuda National Gallery is once again hosting four separate exhibitions. They are: Reinterpreting the European Collection, On-Screen: Global Intimacy, A Selection of New Acquisitions and the continuation of the highly popular Will Collieson Retrospective. In 1989, the people of Bermuda were left a significant collection of European old master paintings from the estate of the late Hereward T. Watlington, with the stipulation that it be housed in an appropriately climate controlled and secure environment. The Bermuda National Gallery has been given the responsibility of caring for the collection, which is usually exhibited in the Watlington Room at the BNG. Recently, the BNG curator, Sophie Cressell has been reconsidering how to creatively exhibit the collection and with that in mind, for the 2011 Autumn exhibition, she has invited a selection of local artists to each pick one paintings from this collection and then reinterpret it from the perspective of a 21st century artist. These will then be exhibited along side the original work. The BNG has invited the following artists to participate: James Cooper, Sharon Wilson, Charlie Godet Thomas, Lynn Morrell, Alan Smith, Louisa Flannery and Sunnell van der Westhuysen. On-Screen: Global Intimacy is an exhibition of five art films, curated by Tumelo Mosaka, who, some will recall, was one of the jurors of the 2010 BNG Biennial. OnScreen features five artists from the Caribbean, Africa and the United States whose work attempts to break down assumptions about the transnational reach of globalization as a universalizing phenomenon. The artists’ diverse locations and histories reveal the competing and contradictory claims about globalization as a homogenizing force. The exhibition was organized by the Krannert Art Museum at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign and was adapted to accommodate the Bermuda National Gallery. The Bermuda National Gallery art collection has recently been the recipient of quite a large number of new works and a selection from these recent acquisitions are now on show in the New Acquisitions exhibition. Amongst the new works is a portrait painting by Henry Ward, called The Bermudian. Other new acquisitions include: watercolour paintings of by Ethel Tucker, Bessie Gray, Carl Broemel, an abstract, polychromed sculpture in spice wood by Chesley Trott, a silk screen print of Hamilton Harbour by Joe Jones, photographs by Meredith Andrews, James Cooper, John Athill Frith, Frederick Hamilton, John Pfahl and a selection of early coloured glass slides, Continued on page 32

Christopher Grimes | Fine Artist The Windjammer II Gallery
Tucked away down a long winding hall at the Historic Fairmont Hamilton Princess Hotel is a small gallery called The Windjammer II. Pick up a tea or coffee at the hotels café on your way and sit off amongst some of Bermuda’s most beautiful local fine art. Resident Artist Christopher Grimes paints quietly in his studio set up right in the room. Watch carefully as his brush strokes oil paint on canvas and magical scenes come to life. How long have you been painting and what inspired you to start? I started in 1974. A friend painted a portrait of my dog and when I looked closely I discovered it was just little dabs of paint. I thought to myself, “I could do that!”. Painting started as a hobby and when I retired 8 years ago I started to paint more and more. I have been painting full time now for 6 years. What is your medium? I started out painting with oils, tried watercolors, returned to oils, tried acrylic and still returned to oils. Oil paints have a richness and depth, they dry slowly and I find that is a benefit most of the time, especially with my style of painting. There are new acrylic paints available now that are much like oils but I still prefer oils.

Where do you paint? I like to paint in my studio and outside. Painting outside on location is important, it teaches you to work faster, appreciate light and shadow and I have learned many shortcuts and new techniques. I highly recommend painting outside to everyone as a fast track to learning all aspects of painting.. I love the rooster paintings. What inspired you to paint these in particular? Here in Bermuda there are no shortages of roosters. They are really beautiful and colourful to paint. I take my camera and a bag of feed and go out and just snap shots of them, come back to the studio and paint from various photos. You have a lot of Bermuda scenes on small and large canvases. Is this a specialty? My art is based on realism with a focus on history. In particular I paint Bermuda historical scenes. It requires research which I have always enjoyed. For example, the painting of Devonshire Dock is set back in 1900. I went to the dock and took photos of the way it is today and then studied that period’s boats and people. You can see in the painting that the bay was quite shallow then, it has been dredged in more recent times, the boats were made of wood rather than today’s fiberglass and men would gather and drink beer, that aspect hasn’t changed over time though. Some of the smaller canvases are studies of Old Bermuda Houses. If you go to the property today most of the views will be obstructed with trees, shrubs and newer buildings so it’s hard to get the same viewpoint, but research and old photos will show how it used to look. Many artists struggle with finding time to create. What advice can you offer them? Set up an easel in a corner somewhere with some brushes and paint. When you walk by you may stop for just 5 minutes and paint a little. Before you know it 2 or 3 hours will go by. Once you are more committed to a painting, turn off all distractions, phone, computer, etc. It is really important to not allow for interruptions because once you lose your train of thought you might not get it back. on facebook called “Bermuda Artists”, I encourage Bermuda’s artists to join, speak, learn and ask questions. Back when I was younger we didn’t have social media. Fellow artists weren’t so willing to share information and secrets; it was a very lonely existence being an artist at that time. Today with social media artists are networking and are much more open with one another, sharing ideas. It is very important for artists to put their personalities aside and recognize that we are all different, yet we have a common drive, to produce art. Join groups, feed off other artists energy and be active in the scene. Success doesn’t come over night, there is only one road and it is all about dedication, consistency and especially hard work. Some of the newer artists in Bermuda have some outstanding ideas and messages to convey, by working together and sharing ideas and techniques we can make Bermuda an arts destination for visitors. There is no easy road to success, you need more than to simply want it, you have to give it your all.
spotlight Joseph Betty / Gumba “I AM NOT AN ARTIST..... I AM ART; I ONLY CREATE WHAT I AM”(Gumba) The current Artist in Residence at The Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art is Jamaican born Joseph Betty, aka Gumba, who currently lives and works in Grand Cayman. Joseph is a self-taught painter, and describes his work as what he sees “through the lenses of his imagination”. His works are a mixture of figurative, cubist, surrealist and still life and use bright colours and lines to convey his unique perspective on the world he sees. He attended the Edna Manley College of Visual and Performing Arts in Jamaica where he received his diploma in Jewelry making and designs. Joseph is a facilitator of the National Gallery of the Cayman islands Outreach Programme, and Founding Director of “Colours for Outreach”, an art programme designed for people with physical and mental challenges. Joseph has exhibited in Canada, USA, Bahamas, United Kingdom and numerous exhibitions in the Cayman Islands. Joseph has received the Cayman Islands National Cultural Foundation artist award in 2004 and 2010. Joseph will be living and working in Bermuda from October – December, with an exhibit of his works opening on December 9th at the Masterworks Museum. He will also host a slideshow of his works on October 27th from 5:30pm – 7pm, and workshops (details found at www.bermudamasterworks.com).

The Will Collieson retrospective exhibition, which has been on show since the Spring, is to continue into the Autumn. Will Collieson is one of Bermuda’s most remarkable artists and is known, especially for his assemblages and collage art. Mr. Collieson, who originates from Liverpool, has made his home in Bermuda since 1971. He uses as his materials, what others discard, but his imagination is outsized, his wit acute. by Roger Crombie Ah, Halloween Such sweet memories Somehow, before summer even really got going, Halloween is staring us in the face. And it’s doing so from three feet above the ground, desperate for free candy. Its eyes beseech us to load their owners up with empty calories and sugar, and woe betide the man or woman who points out the dietary disadvantages of such behaviour. Retail businesses rather like Halloween. It’s a boost for sales not long after everyone returns from their summer holidays and before everyone starts thinking about how much money they can spend on Christmas. Of course, if people knew the true purpose of Halloween, it would be banned in a heartbeat. I’m not going to spoil it for you, but it’s the one day of the year when we all live in a Stephen King novel. It was about a week before Halloween, many years ago, that I first arrived in Bermuda. Some friends let me stay at their house in Sun Valley while I found my way around my new island home. Soon after I arrived, my friends set off for dinner one evening. The house was tiny, and I thought I’d take advantage of the chance to spend an evening alone. “I’ll hold the fort,” I said, not knowing how close I was to the truth. For that day was All Hallows’ Eve. Being English, I’d never heard of it. Evening gave way to an early nightfall. I settled myself in front of the TV. This was in the days when Bermuda had yesterday’s news flown in and shown 24 hours late. That may not sound like much to you Internet-addled, iPod-pop-eyed, electronic prisoners, but in those days in Bermuda, any kind of TV was a big deal. The doorbell rang. Some little children stood on the step, demanding chocolate. Assuming that they were just thugs, I said “No, thanks” and closed the door. Bermudians are too nice; instead of egging the place, they just went next door and extorted candy bars from some other unfortunate. The doorbell rang again, and more pesky kids arrived, asking for free gifts. What a country, I thought, as I closed the door. By the fourth or fifth attempted burglary, I decided that some sort of collective madness had descended on the place. So, to avoid further incident, I switched off all the lights in the house and sat in pitch darkness for an hour or two before going to bed. Whoever came up with the idea of Halloween needs his head examined. Giving candy to children is a capital offence on every other day of the year, as is demanding Hershey bars from total strangers and threatening them in their homes. I have subsequently been informed that Scotsmen invented Halloween, but I shall draw no moral. If you’re a parent, there’s no escape: dress your kids up and take them on the extortion circuit. Then watch in horror as they eat four and a half pounds of candy. Ah, Halloween. Such sweet memories.

HeritagE MATTERS by Dr. Edward Harris American Spies at Bermuda “They boast, however, that their isles have remained in obscurity, until their defences have become strong enough to defy the world.” So said the Bermudians in 1841, according to a visiting American Secret Agent, Albert Fitz, appointed to spying duties by the Hon. Daniel Webster, US Secretary of State. Fitz submitted his report in 1842, “having been honored with Instructions to proceed to certain of the British West India Islands, for the purpose of ascertaining the strength of the Naval and Military forces there; to examine the fortifications, take plans of them, ascertain the numbers of guns, describe the disposition of the inhabitants”, etc., etc. Fitz was the first of three known American spies in Bermuda in 1841–52, the second being Capt. Minor Knowlton and the last Lieut. Frederick Prime. Lieut. Prime reported to General Totten at Washington, DC and having graduated first in his class at West Point in 1849, he found himself at Bermuda three years later. Prime was much taken with Bermuda, so much so that he returned to the subject of its invasion while later on duty at Fort Alcatraz. In his “Notes on an expedition against the Bermudas”, he examines the channels, the garrison and the fortifications. Prime defined the weakest point as Castle Harbour, which could be entered easily without coming under fire from the major forts on St. George’s Island, those on Castle Island being in disrepair. Having reduced the Martello Tower at Ferry Reach, the American invaders could effectively cut off St. George’s and its forts from the rest of Bermuda. By taking St. George’s from the rear, the subjugation of the rest of the island would soon follow, as the enemy would control the Narrows Channel, the only sea access to the Dockyard and Hamilton. The most remarkable surviving evidence of that espionage is Prime’s sketch of the major Bermuda forts in 1852, reproduced here from the National Archives in Washington, DC. These little fort maps are remarkable for their detail, considering that the forts were “visited but once and sometimes under such circumstances that nothing would be committed to paper for many hours after”. This detail is important as all of the major forts of the 1820s-1860s were heavily altered in the 1870s and some again in the 1890s.
The principal forts at Dockyard, St. Catherine, Victoria, Albert, George and Cunningham were all built as a response to the independence of the United States of America. If that country had remained within the British Empire, it is likely that no forts would have been built in Bermuda after the 1760s and the island would have remained “in obscurity”. The forts spied on by Fitz, Knowlton and Prime are now, with the unfortunate exception of the dockyard, part of Bermuda’s UNESCO “World Heritage Site”. The American spies of the mid-1800s have made it possible to understand what the forts looked like when they were built, as a lot of the evidence at the forts themselves was buried under later works. As the spying documents captured information lost in Bermuda records, they are firm evidence that espionage is good for heritage, as they allowed for a fuller reconstruction of the military preparedness of the island in the mid-Victorian period.

DO YOU KNOW… … How the Boer War Prisoners communicated to and from Bermuda? by Horst Augustinovic The story of the 4,619 Boer prisoners-of-war who were brought to Bermuda in 1901, held on seven islands in the Great Sound, and largely repatriated upon the cessation of hostilities in South Africa in June 1902, is well documented. While in Bermuda, these prisoners were allowed to write and receive as many letters as they wished, and it is estimated that an average of 5,000 were written each week. Postmasters were soon elected by the prisoners of each camp – Burt’s, Darrell’s, Hawkins’, Hinson’s, Morgan’s, Port’s and Tucker’s Islands – and a censorship department set up by British military authorities on Port’s Island. While writing material was distributed free of charge, postage stamps and postal cards had to be purchased.
Some letters to Boer prisoners were so badly addressed, it is surprising that they ever reached their destination. This cover, addressed in phonetic English, was mailed in Natal on 3 November 1901 and marked ‘Try Bermuda’. Itarrived in Hamilton on 27 December.
39 All outgoing and incoming mail was censored by up to four censors on Port’s Island, each one using a different hand stamp to indicate censorship. One can assume that the unnumbered first censor mark was made for the first censor who was able to cope with the mail from and to the first prisoners who arrived in January 1901. However, when 3,000 prisoners had arrived by late-1901, it was obviously necessary to employ more censors and create individual marks for each one. Much of the incoming mail from South Africa was not censored on arrival in Bermuda, as it had already been dealt with at its source; those that were censored in Bermuda, were stamped with one of the four censor marks. There are just a few incoming covers that were stamped with all four censor marks and one can assume that this was done as a favour to some prisoners who were shrewd enough to appreciate the future philatelic value of such envelopes. While incoming and outgoing Boer prisoner-of-war mail exists in roughly equal numbers, examples of local mail to and from the prisoners are very scarce. The few known examples were sent to members of the Boer Relief Committee and to the crafts shops that sold the cedar souvenirs carved by the Boers.

SHOPPING Why Should I purchase my jewellery in Bermuda?

Bermuda has always had a very strong reputation for quality and high standards in the jewellery market. Most of the jewellery stores here are family owned and independent. Most of the owners visit the international fairs in Europe – such as Switzerland, England and Italy etc., thus giving you an amazing selection that sets us apart from our US Jewellery retail stores that you see in the malls. These mall stores are basically owned by the same corporation – so you can go into a mall and see three different stores with three different names, but their advertising, policies and merchandise is basically the same – that does not make for very good competition or comparison, now does it? Think about it….if you were to ever have a problem with one store in the mall and you swear to yourself that you will never shop there again…Guess what? The next one in the mall is more than likely to be the same exact company! Not cool! In Bermuda the community is very small so every jewelers reputation is at stake. One wrong move by any of them it will not take long for those stories to travel around and then their reputations are destroyed. Also when you travel and purchase from a US Jeweller you will have to pay sales tax and upon return to Bermuda you are obligated to pay 25% duty on top of the retail pricing. What if something goes wrong? Do you really want to send it back and will the store back up the product? In Bermuda all of the jewellery stores will back up their products and rectify the problems and you will not have the hassle to find a service center and deal with US customs and then once again Bermuda Customs – you will have to fill out a B52 Form and show the receipt when sending it out and explain what is being done. Think about the shipping costs back to the US and then back to Bermuda. Most US stores insist upon the consumer paying these charges. When purchasing a watch overseas look at it and think carefully – who will honor the guarantee in Bermuda. Will you be able to obtain parts? I have seen many disappointed customers that we simply cannot help. Is the watch a legitimate one – there are so many knock offs – infact as I am writing this article I just had a gentleman come in with a fake and he purchased it under the assumption that it was real, he paid $500.00 for it, when infact it is worth about about $30.00. I have to admit some of the knock offs look good – until you open the back. If it sounds too good to be true it more than likely is. Purchase from legitimate sources that you can go back to. In Bermuda watches from Switzerland are traditionally anywhere from 10% to 25% below the US retail price – PLUS no sales tax. This is why so many tourist choose to purchase their watch whilst on vacation here in Bermuda. We buy directly from the factories in Switzerland and in the US the stores purchase from wholesalers and so you are dealing with a middle man mark up.

Port Royal Golf Club is a Robert Trent Jones design. Jones once stated that it may have been his best work outside the United States. The course recently completed a $14 million renovation which included the removal of more than 1200 trees and the redesign and construction of new tees, green complexes and a two new golf holes. One of the most recognized changes was the addition of a new tee on the challenging 16th. The hole plays 235 yards over the Atlantic to a green perched precariously out over the water. The 16th, the most photographed hole in Bermuda, will be a challenge for the worlds’ best in October. Port Royal Golf Club is open to the public. Envisioned as a strategic British military outpost that would make Bermuda the “Gibraltar of the West,” the Royal Naval Dockyard was built by slave and convict labour. The Dockyard locked its gates in 1951. Since then, the seventy-five acre site has been painstakingly renovated to accommodate museums, a movie theatre, restaurants, The Arts Centre and the Bermuda Craft Market. NATIONAL MUSEUM OF BERMUDA Ireland Island, Sandys Located in the Keep of the Royal Naval Dockyard, this museum has become one of the island’s most frequently visited destinations since being opened by HM Queen Elizabeth II in 1975. Its popularity has increased even more with the recent restoration and opening of Commissioner’s House. Elsewhere on the complex, exhibits chronicle both Bermuda’s association with the Royal Navy and its own interesting maritime history. In addition to a collection of Bermuda-made boats, there are relics from the Sea Venture, maps, the famous Tucker Treasure—collected from the sixteenth-century Spanish galleon the San Pedro—and many more artifacts. introducing... marley
Just over a year ago the youngest member of the Dolphin Quest Bermuda (DQB) family, Marley, was born on April 13, 2010. She was named after Marley Beach located in the Warwick Parish of Bermuda. Marley closely resembles her mom, Ely, sharing many physical characteristics including her trademark little wrinkles behind her eyes. Though she is the youngest of the three DQB calves born last year, Marley already weighs 185 pounds and has continued to charm trainers and guests with her eagerness to learn and interact. She puts her full attention and effort into every training session and program, causing trainers to refer to her as “our little genius”. She is an extremely fast learner. Toys are one the many great tools that trainers can use to reinforce our dolphins. Marley’s favorite toy is a hula hoop. She demonstrates great focus as she pokes the hoop with her rostrum in an attempts to turn it vertically in the water so she can swim through it on her own! Marley consistently succeeds at surprising trainers with her rapid learning, leaving us all waiting to see what she will do next! COMMISSIONER’S HOUSE National Museum of Bermuda, Royal Naval Dockyard Located within the confines of the National Museum of Bermuda, Commissioner’s House dominates this complex and entire surroundings from its elevated position. Largely constructed between 1823 and 1828, this commanding Georgian ‘house’ epitomizes British imperial style, power and engineering wherewithal during the nineteenth century. An experimental building in several regards, Commissioner’s House may have been the first domestic project anywhere to use cast iron to support its floors and roof. Rescued from near dereliction through a protracted, award-winning restoration, the building—one of the most important on the island—now houses exhibits on slavery, history of tourism, Bermuda’s connections with the West Indies and the Azores and Bermuda’s military and seafaring history. THE BERMUDA HISTORICAL SOCIETY Par-la-Ville Park, Queen Street, Hamilton Abutting the main library, this small museum is a trove of memorabilia integral to Bermuda’s cultural heritage. In addition to fine antique furniture and eighteenth century silver, its holdings include portraits of Sir George and Lady Somers and William Perot, the original owner of the house. Admission is free but donations are welcomed. 295-2487 THE PEROT POST OFFICE Par-la-Ville Park, Queen Street, Hamilton The quaint little edifice at the bustling junction of Queen and Reid Streets has historical significance that belies its unassuming size. Nineteenth century Hamilton Postmaster and Assemblyman William B. Perot erected the building on the edge of his property, Par-la-Ville, in 1842 and ran it as a post office for 20 years. In 1848 he created his famous ‘Postmaster Stamps’ of which only a handful have survived. FORT HAMILTON Happy Valley Road in Pembroke on the outskirts of Hamilton A sentinel that has been protectively overseeing Hamilton Harbour since 1889, Fort Hamilton with its moat gardens, green lawns, musty dungeons and never-tried artillery is worth a visit. With spectacular views of Hamiton Harbour and the Great Sound beyond it, it is a great place to pause and have a picnic. Open daily 9am-5pm. Admission is free. GOVERNMENT HOUSE Langton Hill, Pembroke This imposing structure is the official residence of Bermuda’s governor, who represents H.M. Queen Elizabeth II. Completed in 1892, Government House was designed by Scottish architect William Hay, whose best-known legacy to Bermuda is the Anglican cathedral in Hamilton. Built ca. 1710, Verdmont is a unique example of early Georgian architecture, and has remained virtually unchanged for 300 years. The museum features an extensive collection of antiques including Bermudamade cedar furniture, portraits, English and Chinese porcelain and a child’s nursery. The gardens contain an assortment of herbs, old roses and fruit trees; and the sweeping view of South Shore is spectacular. Come for a guided tour to learn anything about Verdmont or simply to enjoy its peaceful surrounds. ST. GEORGE’S AND EASTERN PARISHES St. George’s — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — is where it all began, when in July 1609 the Sea Venture — en route from England to the new colony of Jamestown Virginia — encountered a violent storm and was shipwrecked on Bermuda’s reefs less than a mile off what is now St. Catherine’s Point. Celebrating the mission of The St. George’s Foundation, the World Heritage Centre is central to the promotion of the Town and Parish of St. George’s. Lively, interactive histories are told through state-of-the art technology, participatory talks, historical re-enactments, and an (ongoing programme of dramatic presentations, cultural activities and special events). KING’S SQUARE Town of St. George The official, ceremonial centre of St. George’s, King’s Square acquired its name in 1818 when it was named in honour of King George III. Every Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday until November 30, 2011, the town crier, colorfully decked out in tunic, breeches and tricorn hat, rings his bell and shouts “Oyez! Oyez!” (Hear Ye!). This is to convene his `tribunal,’ which will mete seventeenth-century justice to a nagging wench at the ducking stool nearby. By all means try out the stocks for yourself. This is a fun photo opportunity. TUCKER HOUSE Water Street The only museum in St. George’s furnished as a period residence, Tucker House offers a glimpse into the lifestyle of a prosperous eighteenth-century Bermudian merchant. Built around 1752, Tucker family treasures are in evidence throughout the house, including fine family portraits by Joseph Blackburn. A Bermuda National Trust property, Tucker House is open Tues - Friday, 10:00am - 2:00pm Admission $5. 2970545 NATIONAL TRUST MUSEUM AT THE GLOBE HOTEL Globe Hotel, King’s Square Across the street from St. Peter’s Church, this distinctive dwelling was built in 1700 by Governor Samuel Day. During the American Civil War its upper floor was occupied by a Confederate Shipping Agent from where he organized the shipment of arms, uniforms and war supplies through the Union blockade to the South. It now houses the Confederate Museum and hosts the “Rogues and Runners” exhibit, highlighting Bermuda’s participation in the American Civil War. Open Mon. - Sat. 10am-4pm. PETER’S CHURCH Duke of York Street Situated in appropriate loftiness above the main street of St. George’s, St. Peter’s Church is one of the island’s most beloved landmarks and is the oldest Anglican church continuously occupied in the New World. The first church on the site was constructed in 1612 of native cedar and a thatched roof. This original edifice was replaced seven years later by a more permanent structure that lasted almost a hundred years, until the hurricane of 1712. THE OLD RECTORY Broad Alley, St. George’s, behind St. Peter’s Church Built in 1699, this charming cottage on one of the numerous picturesque back streets in St. George’s is one of Bermuda’s oldest houses. Acquired in 1700 by Captain George Dew, an unsuccessful privateer who became a St. George’s assemblyman, The Old Rectory acquired its current name when it became the residence of the Rev. Alexander Richardson in the last quarter of the eighteenth century. Outisde viewing only. ST. GEORGE’S HISTORICAL SOCIETY MUSEUM Duke of Kent Street and Featherbed Alley Built around 1734 as a private residence, Mitchell House is a fine example of eighteenth-century Bermudian domestic architecture and has been home to the St.

Adults $5, Children under 12 $2 BERMUDIAN HERITAGE ASSOCIATION Samaritan’s Lodge, Intersection of York and Water Streets St. George’s newest museum was formed in 1994 to preserve and document the history of black culture and achievement in Bermuda. Displays include a fascinating assortment of memorabilia relating to the many areas in which blacks have made a contribution since first arriving on the island in 1616: shipbuilding, piloting, construction, nursing, music, sports and politics, to name a few. TOWN HALL AND THE STATE HOUSE Town of St. George Town Hall, the handsome building commanding King’s Square and bearing the town crest was begun in 1802, a few years after the Corporation of St. George’s was founded in 1797. The State House, located up a gentle elevation behind Town Hall, is one of the island’s oldest, most historically important buildings. Erected around 1620 by Governor Nathaniel Butler, the State House is open to the public 10am-4pm on Wednesdays only. THE UNFINISHED CHURCH Duke of Kent Street, St. George’s The impressive Gothic vestige that looms over the town of St. George’s was begun in 1870 as a replacement for St. Peter’s, which had fallen into a state of serious disrepair. Designed by William Hay, the Scottish-born architect who later drew the plans for Hamilton’s cathedral, the St. George’s church was abandoned in 1899 when near completion. FORT ST. CATHERINE St. Catherine’s Point, St. George’s Fort St. Catherine stands on the site of one of the four towers that Governor Richard Moore erected along Bermuda’s coast around 1613. None of these original towers, the first English forts in the New World, survive. The present, completely restored structure, dates from the mid-nineteenth century and is home to fascinating exhibits including military guns and weapons. Open Mon-Fri 10:00am-4:00pm. CARTER HOUSE Southside Road, St. David’s Carter House was probably built in the 1720s by John Hayward and his wife Martha, reputedly a descendant of Christopher Carter, one of the two Sea Venture survivors who stayed behind when the vessel’s other passengers continued on to Virginia in 1610. Acquired by the St. David’s Historical Society, this small house with its unusual ‘welcoming arm’ stairs has been converted into a museum that commemorates the pre-war agrarian traditions of St. David’s. Open Saturday 10:00am-4:00pm. ST. DAVID’S LIGHTHOUSE Mount Hill, St. David’s Constructed of Bermuda stone, this 55-foot structure is one of two local lighthouses. Lit for the first time in 1879, its fixed white light enabled navigators to take cross bearings with the flashing beacon emitted by Gibbs Hill lighthouse way up the coast in Southampton. Open 9-4, Mon-Fri from Nov - Mar. Admission is free. CRYSTAL CAVES & FANTASY CAVES Wilkinson Avenue, Bailey’s Bay Two young boys discovered this magical underground world comprising stalactites, stalagmites and a clear, fifty-five foot deep lake by accident in 1905. Subsequently it has become a leading attraction for visitors who can now also visit a nearby sister site, Fantasy Cave. A café and a gift shop are also located on the premises. Crystal Caves, which is on the bus route between Hamilton and St. George’s, is open seven days a week except on public holidays that occur during the winter months. Open 9am - 5pm. If I had a world of my own, everything would be nonsense. Nothing would be what it is because everything would be what it isn’t. And contrary-wise; what it is it wouldn’t be, and what it wouldn’t be, it would. You see? – Alice in Wonderland One of Bermuda’s best-kept secrets is the Mad Hatters restaurant hidden in the City of Hamilton around a winding corner from both directions. I say it is a best kept secret because every time I hear someone mention that they went to or are going to Mad Hattars another pipes up and says “where is that, i keep hearing about it?” Walking into Bermuda’s little piece of Wonderland you will first step foot into the outdoor gazebo filled with trees, plant pots in all colours and sizes and the general feeling that you might spot a rabbit dashing across the room. Entering into the main dining room pick out a Mad Hat and be seated, you are officially in Wonderland. The décor will keep you noticing Wonderland inspired accents for hours. You might notice Chef Benjamin Jewett peak around a corner to see your facial expression as you dive into a delectable gourmet meal. Where are you from and how long have you been here with us in Bermuda? I am originally from The Isle of Wight, England. I trained in Philadelphia and since arriving in Bermuda I have worked at the Lobster Pot, Waterlot Inn, Newport Room and now Mad Hatters for the past 5 years. Tell me about the menu at Mad Hatters, I have heard it is quite different for the average restaurant. Here at Mad Hatters the specials change daily, lunch menu changes every week and the dinner menu changes every 8 months or so. Each menu is based on soups, salads, red/ white meat and vegetarian. Our desserts are also random and change often, all homestyle and all fresh ingredients.
I have also heard that Mad Hatters is a hot spot for Parties. What types of parties are held here? Staff parties, birthday parties, Christmas Parties, corporate dinners and meetings, rehearsal dinners, hen nights, stag nights. Mad Hatters is a great place to break the ice especially between families. A lot of the parties will order big plates and everyone will share. For example we will do a roast turkey, sirloin steak, leg of lamb and all of the sides and fixings, one table will share this platter style. Have you ever had a disaster in the kitchen? Apart from myself, usually with a hangover it can be a really bad day but it is entirely my fault and it would be bad practice to blame anyone else but myself. No matter what goes wrong we manage to get through things. Ovens go, exhaust fan breaks, the kitchen might flood, things don’t work forever. Disasters make for an interesting kitchen. Everyday is a challenge but somehow we seem to get through. Do you have a signature dish? We create a wild mushroom soup served in a tea pot with coconut chili milk served in a milk jug all to be poured over Julienne wild mushroom snow peas and peppers served in a bowl. It pairs well with an oaky Smokey white wine that would bring out the flavors of mushrooms but crisp enough to hold itself against the chili milk. with Barry Cohen The Pumpkin Patch References to pumpkins date back many centuries. The name pumpkin originated from the Greek word for “large melon” which is “pepon.” “Pepon” was nasalized by the French into “pompon.” The English changed “pompon” to “Pumpion.” Shakespeare referred to the “pumpion” in his Merry Wives of Windsor. American colonists changed “pumpion” into “pumpkin.” The “pumpkin” is referred to in The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, Peter, Peter, Pumpkin Eater and Cinderella. Native Americans dried strips of pumpkin and wove them into mats. They also roasted long strips of pumpkin on the open fire and ate them. The origin of pumpkin pie occurred when the colonists sliced off the pumpkin top, removed the seeds, and filled the insides with milk, spices and honey. The pumpkin was then baked in hot ashes. Here are some unique recipes using pumpkin. I hope you enjoy.
Frisee, Radicchio, Pumpkin and Asian Pear Salad with Hazelnut Vinaigrette Recipe Ingredients 8 cups torn frisee , rinsed and spun dry 1 cup diced Pumpkin (Cooked) 1 head of radicchio separated into leaves, rinsed, spun dry, and shredded 2 Asian pears (available at specialty produce markets), cored and cut into 1/2-inch pieces 3 tablespoons white-wine vinegar 1 teaspoon Dijon-style mustard 3 tablespoons hazelnut oil or walnut oil (available at specialty foods 3 tablespoons olive oil 1/4 cup hazelnuts, toasted and skinned and chopped Directions In a bowl combine the frisee, the radicchio, pumpkin and the pears. In a small bowl whisk together the vinegar, the mustard, and salt and pepper to taste, add the oils in a stream, whisking, and whisk the dressing until it is emulsified. Toss the salad with the dressing, divide it among 8 salad plates, and sprinkle each serving with some of the hazelnuts. SUGGESTED WINE Eroica Riesling Chateau Ste. 96 PUMPKIN and CHICKEN ENCHILADAS Ingredients 8 corn tortillas (the corn flavor goes really well with the pumpkin, I promise) 4 tablespoons of cilantro 1 pound chicken, shredded 2 roasted green chiles, chopped small 6 oz. of white sharp cheddar cheese, shredded Sauce 1 can of pumpkin puree (15 oz) 3-4 cloves of garlic, peeled 1 jalapeno (remove seeds) 1 teaspoon chile powder 1/2 teaspoon cumin 2 teaspoons of salt 1/4 teaspoon of pepper 1 1/2 cups of chicken stock Directions Preheat your oven to 425˚F. In a blender, puree pumpkin, jalapeno, chicken stock, garlic, chile powder, cumin, salt, and pepper. Place 1 cup of this sauce in the bottom of an 8 inch glass casserole dish. In a bowl, combine shredded chicken with green chiles, cilantro, and/or scallions and season with salt and pepper. Place some of the chicken mixture on each tortilla and then lay the tortilla seam side down in the casserole dish. Pour the remaining sauce over the enchiladas. Top with cheese. Bake for 20-25 minutes until cheese is melted and casserole is bubbly. SUGGESTED WINE: Paco & Lola Albariño 2009 Straw-colored yellow with green reflections, clean and very bright. Intense and elegant, its aromas bring to mind dew drenched fresh herbs and fine hints of green apples. Citric, with crisp floral notes on the finish. Light acidity gives it freshness with excellent mouth feel. Retail : $24.75
Pumpkin and Black Bean Casserole Ingredients 1 1/2 cups cooked black beans (or one can, rinsed and drained) 1/2 cup corn, fresh or frozen 1 medium onion, finely chopped 1/2 bell pepper, finely chopped 2 cloves garlic, minced 1 teaspoon cumin 1 teaspoon ancho chili powder (or other mild chili powder) 1/8 – 1/2 teaspoon chipotle chile powder (to taste) 15 ounces canned tomatoes, drained and liquid reserved* 1 pound pumpkin 3/4 cup soymilk or other non-dairy milk 1/2 cup nutritional yeast 3 tablespoons cornstarch 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon mustard powder 1/2 teaspoon Spanish paprika 1 tablespoon tahini (optional) Directions In a large bowl, combine the black beans with the next 8 ingredients and set aside. Cut the pumpkin in half. Set aside one half for another use and peel the other half. Cut it into very thin slices about 1/4-inch thick and 2 inches long. Preheat oven to 425˚F. Spray a 2-quart casserole dish with canola oil. Lay one-third of the pumpkin slices in the bottom of the dish, and sprinkle lightly with salt and pepper. Cover with half of the bean mixture. Repeat layers with another third of the pumpkin and the remainder of the beans. Finish with the final third of the pumpkin slices. In a blender, combine the reserved *tomato liquid (about 1/2 cup) with the soymilk and remaining ingredients. Blend well and pour over the pumpkin. Cover tightly, and bake for 30 minutes. Remove the cover and bake for 20-30 minutes, until sauce is thick and bubbly and pumpkin is tender. SUGGESTED WINE: Byron Santa Barbara Pinot Noir 2009 The dominant themes are dark berries, cherries, rose petal, red plum, brown spice and smoke. This is a forward, approachable wine that displays the beautiful floral/mineral character typical of Santa Barbara Pinot Noir. Retail: $23.00
