all time best seller John MacDonald Provides Solutions to Two Major Issues that Most Landscape Painters Struggle With

J

ohn MacDonald is about to solve two big problems that most landscape painters experience: 1. How in the world can you convey emotion when there are no tubes of paint labeled “Tranquility,” “Drama,” or “Peace”? 2. How to create an amazing landscape painting when working from sketches, studies, or photographs. In Poetic Landscapes and Creating Dynamic Landscapes, you’ll see that master artist John MacDonald has solved both of these problems, and he’s going to help you do the same. The Difference in John’s Paintings Over the years, John has created a 7-step process for landscape painting that makes the entire process more predictable and manageable, but not robotic. Using John’s process will free up your time, and your mind, to focus on other things in your painting — things like the mood you want to capture, the message you want to send, and the emotion you want to evoke. In John’s videos, you’ll see how composition, selecting a focal point, and tonal underpainting make a tremendous difference in how people see and experience your artwork. Painting from a Photo Another quality that makes John stand out from other artists is that he often works from pencil sketches, painted color studies, and photographs to create landscape paintings in his studio. Many artists have been taught that that it’s impossible to capture the amazing beauty of nature from a soulless picture that distorts color, condenses values, and can make it hard to distinguish shapes and shadows. While John prefers to capture nature while painting outdoors, it’s not always possible. The key is understanding what to use and what to leave out from a photo reference and how to set yourself up for success before you start the painting. Best part? You’ll still get to enjoy your time out in nature, and when you’re ready to paint that scene, it will be as if you’re right back there.

John MacDonald will show you how to create stunning landscapes.

JOHN MACDONALD

Excellent Artist and Instructor John is an excellent artist and instructor, and he’s going to show you how he does it. John’s paintings have a rich tonal feeling, much like those created a hundred years ago. They’re tasteful, elegant, and have a feel most artists wish they understood how to create. In these videos, John shows you his best: • Amp up your overall painting skills and progress toward mastery • Why some paintings work … and others fail! • His proven 7-step landscape painting process • Keeping it real when painting from photo references • How to get a fuller range with fewer paints • How to paint snow (it’s more than just white!) • Paint what you want to say (your stories, your way!) • Really “get” the structure of lights and darks • Where to place the essential details and where they should be avoided • …And so much more! The Deep Thinker These videos are jam-packed with John’s best tools and techniques that

will help you bring feeling and emotion into your artwork. In each, John demonstrates full start-to-finish paintings that will inspire you to begin your next painting right away. There is also a sit-down interview with the artist. In the interview, John shares even more about what makes him tick — he’s a deep thinker and a guy with an incredible love of the outdoors. A Fresh Approach John is careful to emphasize that there are no secrets or shortcuts provided in these videos. Instead, he offers you a fresh approach by giving you a deeper understanding of the entire process to create important and visually stunning work. You’ll find these video courses focus on the basic elements of painting, so beginners will certainly benefit from them. In addition, John covers the topics in such depth that even highly experienced painters will learn many new concepts and methods. In fact, many of the world’s leading artists seek out instruction from John to help them elevate the quality of their paintings. Don’t miss this amazing opportunity to explore the fundamentals of landscapes and discover the essence of the process of painting from a true master.

all time best seller Color Specialist John Pototschnik Cooks Up a Banquet of Delicious Color Concepts You can create any mood you want in your paintings with just 3 colors + white

J

ohn Pototschnik is an artist who knows how to look at color just like you would a timeless recipe — a perfect blend of fine ingredients that create a dish that is to be savored. But unlike a long and detailed recipe, John makes color mixing a whole lot easier for you because he sticks to a very limited palette. John’s first video, Limited Palette Landscapes is an incredible lesson for creating breathtaking landscapes with just a few colors. You’ll see how easy it is to create the right color harmony that will make your paintings vibrate and create a deep emotional connection for viewers. After the success of Limited Palette Landscapes, John came back to the studio to share his entire limited palette color system. This system is contained within a video + companion book. Truly Art- and Life-Changing For Unlimited Color with a Limited Palette, John painted 50 small paintings of the exact same subject. Because of the color selections, each painting looked entirely different from the others. Some were filled with sunlight, others showed moody green skies, a few were nocturne (night) paintings. The different effects and moods each one portrayed was amazing. And what’s even more amazing is that John painted each of these with only three colors plus white! A Breakthrough in Color Wheels John explains that when he’s looking for a certain mood or feel, he goes through his library of color studies (over 1000 of them!), picks what he wants, and then looks at his color wheel references where he documented how he previously created that mood with certain colors. Using This Color System

The video and book combo is the best way for you to really benefit from everything John’s color system has to offer. In the video, you’ll learn all about how the system works and then begin to explore and document color combinations. The book offers even more color combinations and a useful tool (included) that will help you get your color mixing just right. Let’s take a closer look at what’s here for you: • Master the ONE color most artists never get right • The THREE best ways to immediately change up your color scheme • Feel confident that all your colors are going to get along beautifully • John’s Top 5 Tips that will help the quality of your paintings grow by leaps and bounds • Ever hesitate to mix colors? Didn’t mix enough? Mixed too much? Wasted paint? John gives you the scoop on solving all of these! • Love muddy-looking paint? Didn’t think so! Do THIS and avoid the mud! • Painting from a photograph that didn’t quite capture the colors you remember? No problem — you’ll know just what to do now! • Pick your desired mood, turn to that page, and BAM — the mixing formula is right there for you! • And much, much more… Simple and Effective Through paint mixing demonstrations and visual aids, you’ll see how John determines the mood of a painting by first deciding on the color scheme. No more deciding color by color as you go — that work will already be done! In addition to creating numerous paint studies, he also

demonstrates a full start-to-finish painting using his color system. If you use John’s techniques, you’ll find there is no wrong answer when it comes to color. John Potoschnik will revolutionize your use of color. s! ing Great Paintings Creat ting Painto rKeys

enerations have been inspired by the beautiful paintings of masters such as Joaquin Sorolla and John Singer Sargent. These artists Sargent created with so much flair and style. Artists all over the world see his work as the standard for painting beautiful portraits.Thomas Jefferson Kitts has spent much of his life studying the works of masters like Joaquin Sorolla and John Singer Sargent. With that in-depth knowledge, Thomas incorporates the methods and techniques of artists past into his own work. The first video we produced with Kitts, Sorolla: Painting the Color of Light continues to be one of our top sellers and will go down as one of the all-time favorites for those who want to learn how Sorolla painted the light so beautifully. Sorolla is one of the most respected painters ever to have lived. The way he mastered the color of light is something other artists dream about, yet can never quite pull off. More recently, we invited Thomoas back into our studio to record the methods of a different master, John Singer Sargent. A great painter whose name is synonymous with stylish portraiture and elegant figures in environments. His dazzling paintings have inspired and influenced artists for a century and a half. Artists everywhere have forever been on a quest for his secrets, methods, and materials. Here’s your opportunity to benefit from Sargent’s methods and techniques, again through the teaching of Thomas Kitts, a modern master who will help you bring Sargent’s brilliant insight to your own work. In this video, Thomas shows you what Sargent did to make his work highly recognized — his unique look and style. You’ll learn compositional tips,

how Sargent painted edges, and when you should or should not use texture. See how even a modern award-winning master painter like Thomas applies Sargent’s principles to enhance his own work. Sargent is most famous for his commanding brushwork. From early on, Sargent demonstrated a remarkable ability to draw with a brush, which inspired admiration far and wide. “Always use a full brush and a larger one than necessary.” — John Singer Sargent Thomas explains that brushwork is the hand of the artist. You may prefer to lay down visible expressive marks, or conceal them. However, brushwork tells the viewer that a human being who has hopes, fears, thoughts, and feelings — just like yours and mine are executed brilliantly the painting. Discover why it isn’t hard to take brushwork risks, you’ll understand you can scrape off your failure and make

another run at it until it works. This is something Sargent did. It is the forgiveness of oils that allows you to scrape and repaint to maintain the feeling of freshness and spontaneity. No one has equaled Sargent’s mastery of color, light and form. Through his direct painting technique, he achieved his signature spontaneous brushwork and lively compositions. Although all of Sargent’s work appears to be spontaneous and direct, this doesn’t mean that great preparation did not go into the painting. He often created preliminary sketches as studies …sometimes on the canvas, sometimes on separate paper. When actually creating the painting, he took advantage of his great skill to draw directly with the brush. His spontaneous painting is best characterized as “painting with slow haste.” In his decades of study, Thomas has investigated every aspect of what these masters did to elevate their work. Follow along as Thomas paints a full start-to-finish demonstration in each of the videos. Through these paintings, in the style of Sorolla and Sargent, you’ll get a glimpse of how the masters may have painted in the prime of their life. And because of Thomas’ deep knowledge base, he is able to teach you how to bring in the most glorious light Sorolla style, and use commanding brushwork to add flair and style like Sargent. To study with Kitts and to learn these techniques in modern day will serve you well in your art career. It will be as though you’re breathing new life into your paintings because you’ll be on your way to harnessing the power and beauty of light and creating your own sense of style and elegance. These videos will allow you to immerse yourself in an in-depth exploration of the methods of the masters.

About Your Art Instructor: Thomas Jefferson Kitts has dedicated many years to the in-depth study of the masters. There’s no better artist than Kitts to introduce you to the world of Joaquin Sorolla and John Singer Sargent. Thomas is a renowned artist who teaches frequently, travels extensively, and maintains a distinguished exhibition history throughout the U.S. His work is showcased in numerous art publications, museums and major exhibitions as well as residing in many private collections throughout North America.

best seller Bash The Blah And Bring On The Light And Drama!

T

hink about how much subject matter a landscape can offer a painter: billowing clouds, shimmering water, radiant sunsets, glowing shadows, vacant skies, stormy thunderheads, glistening treetops, and much more. After all, painting is about the light, the shadows, and about orchestrating these elements into a beautiful painting that dazzles viewers the instant they see it. But for some artists, no matter how gorgeous the scene, their paintings still turn out rather bland, and frankly, kind of wimpy. And let’s face it, nobody wants to be known as a wimpy artist! Well, starting now, no more wimpy paintings, because you’re going to experience an art-changing lesson that will bring new life and luster to your artwork! Kim Shows You The Light! Painting is all about light … about shadows … about how to orchestrate these elements into a beautiful painting that dazzles the viewers the instant they see it. But if you’re not confident in bringing in strong color to create that exciting feel, your landscape paintings will just look dull and wimpy — and that could be very embarrassing for you. In her video, Dramatic Light, Kim Casebeer takes you from the beginning stages of planning your landscape using value and color studies, all the way to the final stages of pushing value and color to create drama and the impression of light. Rather than merely painting objects, see how Kim creates a light-filled atmosphere as she demonstrates a beautiful landscape painting, Summer Light. You’ll like Kim’s direct style of teaching as she helps you transform your paintings from descriptive landscapes into dramatic expressions of nature at its most breathtaking. Her fascination with the effects of light upon a landscape is something you’ll come to value as you add dramatic light to your paintings. Do You Ever Get The Shivers? You can paint along as Kim shows you how to build a landscape painting that will give you shivers. You’ll see every step from start to finish, and the

light and drama will be stuck in your head forever. Wimpy paintings lack light, don’t express drama, and have zero pizzazz. If you’re feeling this, it’s time to take action! You’ve got to change things, or you could lose your love of painting forever. Kim Casebeer is the perfect teacher to show you how to create paintings that beg people from across a crowded room to come take a look. Her paintings are dramatic, showcase the atmosphere, and not just the objects. She’ll share everything she’s got with you, including some of her uncommon but proven techniques like using grayscale markers, creating changing moods just by holding your brush differently — you’ll see it all!

• How brushstrokes spice up your painting • Why quiet passages add drama • How grayscale markers add value to your painting • Thumbnail sketching is a blockbuster idea • Direction of sunlight is critical to believability • Atmosphere or objects? Which one rules? • One way to save time when painting • Painting across a mass or with a mass? Who knew? • Why the way you hold a brush matters • Focusing on the focal area • The importance of quiet in a painting • FIVE hours of high-quality instruction • An interview with the artist • A high-speed view for the times you’re in a hurry • A show of the artist’s best work • And lots more!

Painting Atmosphere and Light, Not Just Objects Have you ever been outside and stopped cold in your tracks by a scene you just had to paint? Ever paint it and realize it did not live up to the feeling you had when you first saw it? Kim says that feeling comes from the impression the scene holds in the light and atmosphere rather than just the objects you see. This is a concept that can transform your paintings from descriptive, lifeless landscapes to breathtaking paintings that express what you’re feeling. How cool would it be to learn that? Here’s some of what you get with this video: • Premixing your paint takes time to save time (makes sense, right?)

About Your Art Instructor: For more than 20 years, Kim Casebeer finds that the challenge of capturing light in the landscape is a great motivator. Kim’s work can be found in many collec-

tions throughout the United States. Her work has been showcased in major magazines and featured in the Grand Teton and Yellowstone section of the Art of the National Parks coffee table book. Kim is a Master Signature member of the American Women Artists, and a Signature member of the Pastel Society of America and the Oil Painters of America.

beginner Do You Feel You Have No Talent? Can’t Draw a Stick Figure? New System Can Teach Anyone to Paint. The Perfect Easy Painting System for Beginners of All Ages

M

ost people who see beautiful paintings wish they could create beautiful paintings too, but believe natural talent is required. Though they instinctively understand that a piano master had to start out by learning the basic notes and scales and following a process, there is a mistaken belief that painters are born with talent. Nothing could be further from the truth. Painting and drawing are a learned process. Anyone who can learn to type, or can follow a recipe to cook, or can follow simple instructions, can learn to paint. That’s pretty much everybody. Too many people take art lessons or try to learn on their own, find themselves confused and discouraged, then just give up. In a quest to teach a million people to paint, artist and art publisher Eric Rhoads has found a way to eliminate that confusion and discouragement by creating the world’s easiest painting instruction system. Rhoads claims that he lacked talent and couldn’t even draw a stick figure, but always wanted to paint. He even went to an art class, but was so intimidated by the work being produced that he turned around and left because he knew he didn’t have the talent to produce such beautiful paintings. Thankfully, Rhoads met a master painter who had studied in the lineage of Italian, French, British, and American masters, and whose life mission was to take a complicated process, break it down, and make it simple. His guidance resulted in a beautiful first painting — and Rhoads’ life in art as an artist and art publisher. Rhoads realized that painting is like music, which is based on just a few notes on a keyboard. So he developed a “keyboard” for learning art, removing the stress and overcomplication. Artists following this system can learn basic skills quickly, without drawing or painting ability, and without relying on “talent.” Now you can become an artist. The system is 100% guaranteed, and if you follow the system and are not creating beautiful paintings in just days, we’ll

send your money back. It just requires your watching a video, following the step-by-step system, and practicing. There is also a line of products developed for this system to make it easier, though you can do it without these tools. I

n this video, Nancy teaches every type of painter — landscape, figure, portrait, plein air, you name it — that the best way to solidify and practice the essential painting principles you must have is to paint still life. If you struggle to see detail, prepare yourself to discover new things in new ways and choose how to represent those things in your paintings. Here’s a big more of what you’ll discover from Nancy: • How to “knit” a painting together to create a natural flow • How to create illusions in your paintings • The difference between what beginners and advanced painters see • Setting up your still life scene to match what you really love to paint!

• Is it in the light or is it in the shadow? (You’ll never struggle with this one again!) • What MOST painters lack • Overcome any belief that still life is b-o-r-in-g! • The #1, hands-down, “no question about it” way to become a better painter • …And so much more for you! Nancy is a straight shooter who lays it all out for you. Because of her top-notch teaching and painting skills, Nancy talks and walks you through nearly every brushstroke. to achieving a successful glowing landscape. If you want your viewers to “bask in the glow” of a painting you created, you can’t miss these comprehensive lessons Bill brings in these video courses. Advancing Your Art to Another Level If you’re a painter already, you know that landscape painting is one of the most soothing and “Zen-like” painting experiences there is. There’s such a unique sense of calm and serenity you get from working with landscapes. landscape & plein air How One Artist Became the Darling of the Art World Overnight

I

t’s an old story, really. Artist breaks rules. Artist becomes famous. But we really don’t see that story happening much today. In fact, it seems like a lot of paintings look alike. Sometimes it feels like artists are following the same standard formula as a lot of other artists. All artists dream of being nonconformists … of painting their own way, doing their own thing, and not worrying about what galleries or collectors think. Then reality sets in... They come to fear if they paint outside the lines, their work will be rejected or won’t sell. So they wrap up in their security blanket of ho-hum, so-so, middle-of-the-road, vanilla (yawn…) This raises the question … can an artist speak in their own voice, do their own thing, and still become a top seller? Yes. Just ask Charlie Hunter. This is Where the Magic Happens In Rule-Breaking Landscapes, Charlie is going to show you how to take what could be an overwhelming task — painting a detailed natural landscape — and break it down into easily understood components. This is what will help you solve the problems inherent in capturing unfamiliar scenery in a way that is unforced — because in nature, things shouldn’t be forced! This is where the beautiful magic happens, and you need to know what Charlie knows. You’ll be able to apply these techniques to your own paintings in order to tell your own stories in your own way … it’ll be the new rebel you! Watch and paint right along and you’ll feel like you’re hanging out with Charlie and getting an idea of why he’s so cheerful all the time. You’ll see how he came to be a rebel and be totally OK with that. Just a Little Different Charlie is his own person … and his own artist. He paints what he wants and makes no apologies for it. While most artists are using a full palette of colors, Charlie paints predominantly monochromatic. Other artists use a selection of brushes. Charlie uses gadgets he

picks up at the hardware store. Charlie will be the first to tell you that he’s not making paintings, he’s telling stories. His stories come in the form of murky-brown, drippy portraits of decaying American infrastructure, and, through his paintings, he tells us the tales of what nature does to the things man creates. The video also includes a one-onone with Charlie and magazine publisher, Eric Rhoads chatting about lots of different things. You’ll get a digital gallery of some of his amazing work — you definitely don’t want to miss this. There’s also a one-on-one with Charlie and me chatting about lots of different things. You’ll get a digital gallery of some of his amazing work — you definitely don’t want to miss this. But seriously … Charlie may be his own unique and wonderful character, but he’s also a brilliant painter with much to teach. Here’s a bit more of what you’ll experience with Charlie: • He forge a trail so the viewer naturally follows along in the story

• Wields a sword brush like a swashbuckling pirate • Strategically uses color so that value does the heavy lifting (is there more than just murky brown?) • Avoids stepping in zebra poop (yes, he’ll explain) • Applies cool marks with interesting tools, creating amazing effects that people can’t seem to figure out on their own (make a list for a trip to the hardware store!) And you’ll get to see Charlie’s signature moves: • The “Drink Coffee and Go ‘Hmmmmm’” technique • The “You are So Stupid” maneuver • His “If You Can’t Dazzle Them With Brilliance, Then Baffle Them With BS” routine • The “How Dental Tools Can Improve Your Painting” shtick • The “Squinting to Save Yourself From Having to Paint Every Damn Thing” miracle • His “Avoid Marching Soldiers” mantra • The “Paint Drips Make Great Tree Trunks” anecdote

About Your Art Instructor: Charlie Hunter grew up in rural New Hampshire and Vermont. Like many small children, Hunter drew what interested him - automobiles, barns, and trains. During years of homeschooling, he continued on this path and eventually graduated cum laude from Yale University with a degree in Art and Graphic Design. In 2010, Hunter was invited to join Richard Schmid’s Putney Painters and in 2012, he entered his first plein air event. Hunter is renowned for his extraordinary compositional sense and restrained, subtle palette.

Witness the Master Create from Start to Finish In these video courses, you’ll watch

this master artist plan and begin a painting. You’ll then see every step he takes until he deems the piece finished! You’ll witness how Albert harmonizes the transparent and opaque passages, creating a delightful and pleasing composition — something that has brought Albert much acclaim. You’ll experience in-depth explanations of landscape proportions (demonstrations included!) — gaining a perspective from someone with over 70 years of experience! How to Grab the Attention of Your Viewers Albert shares his secrets for capturing people’s attention (even from afar!) and compelling them into the painting by amplifying its “carrying power.” He offers his best techniques on how to create exciting and dynamic paintings by avoiding boring placement and compositions. You’ll learn how to “see through things” and know exactly how to complete specific parts of a painting more strongly — which is very important for the composition and for the overall quality. How to See Unexpected Color Effects One of Albert’s signature features is his distinctive approach to obtaining transparent and opaque passages throughout the painting, bringing in textural variation and color harmony … and now you’ll know how to do this, too! You’ll learn how to multiply your color options in your composition to create unexpected — yet brilliant — color effects!

Know When You’ve Truly Finished Your Painting Albert shows you his unique methods for analyzing a piece so you know when it’s finished … really finished! This is invaluable so you’ll never overwork your paintings again. You’ll also discover how to maintain intentional variety and unity throughout your painting to keep your viewers’ eyes glued to your creation. Here’s a peek at what’s in store for you in these videos: • Transparent + opaque = Albert’s signature style! • Capture the excitement of the subject — whatever the subject it! • From toning your canvas to making the final touches • The ONE “must-do” for painting successfully from photographs • Bring a fresh approach each time you paint • Find (and paint!) the rhythm of your subject (this is the key to bringing your painting to life!) • Two things that will help you become a better painter • Adding reflections adds magic! • Shimmer — just what a water scene needs! • Relax as you paint — just let it flow! • And LOTS more!

landscape & plein air Are You Setting Yourself Up for Failure Before You Even Begin to Paint?

E MARK FEHLMAN

Design Strategies for Powerful Paintings DMF1 • 4h 25m Retail Price: $161 Your Price: $127

very great painting starts with ONE critical step. Skip or skimp on this and you’ll be producing paintings that don’t meet anyone’s standard of quality. In your effort to improve, you could waste time and money trying to advance and still not get it right. Why is this? Only focusing on improving your painting skills won’t solve the real problem. And if you don’t get to the root cause, you’ll still be falling short. That’s about to change for you because we’re going to expose the real problem and, even better, provide a real solution. What’s that critical step you’re missing? Starting with a solid foundation

of design. If you’re like most artists, you either never learned to use proven design strategies or you’ve fallen into a bad habit

of not taking the time for good design. Artist Mark Fehlman is going to show you that by doing a bit more work up front, you’ll be able to confidently progress through your paintings and have them turn out just as you planned. This is a must-have video for every artist, regardless of the type of painting you do or what level of artist you are — mastering planning and design is essential to your progress and success. Not only does Mark teach his proven design strategies, he puts it all into action as he demonstrates a full start-to-finish painting. All along the way, Mark will explain what he’s doing and relate it back to the design principles he’s teaching.

About Your Art Instructor: Mark Fehlman practiced as an architect for 35 years, designing both commercial buildings and residential commu-

nities. Now, as a professional artist, he is equally comfortable in figurative and landscape subjects that feature strong composition, well-defined value relationships, and vibrant color. Mark has received many awards and his work has been included regularly in the California Art Club’s “Gold Medal” show, “On Location in Malibu” show, and at the Maynard Dixon Country Show in Utah. Mark has developed proven strategies and methods for executing a plan that will help artists create more powerful and higher-quality paintings.

t may sound impossible to paint something without form, color, shape, or substance. But there is a trick to learning how to paint the effects found in the air! Whether a clear day or raging skies, Kathleen Hudson shows you how to accurately portray the atmosphere in your paintings. Kathleen has painted vast desert canyons, elegant countrysides, and even frightening storms with elegance and accuracy. No matter what she paints, Kathleen has found success because she employs proven techniques for using colors to create a dramatic atmosphere. Study with Kathleen and you’ll see how to achieve dimension with warm colors, cool colors, and color-temperature shifts. You’ll be able to create naturallooking light in water, make light appear to move, capture sunlight in the sky, and even paint correct shadows. With Kathleen’s instructions and demonstration, you’ll soon be helping viewers of your paintings feel what you felt when you saw a particular scene with your own eyes.

Kathleen’s methods allow you to manipulate your colors so even pale shades pop and showcase the atmosphere. You’ll be capturing the natural details of a scene — realistic waves, water spray, heavy clouds, rain, and the rugged edges of rough terrain. Throughout both videos, Kathleen provides plenty of practical tips that will help you stop chasing the light and learn to embrace every type of landscape and environment so that your landscapes turn out just the way you imagined.

About Your Art Instructor: Kathleen B. Hudson enjoyed an unconventional education and travelled widely, visiting art museums and exploring landscapes through the US and Europe. In 2005 she moved to Boston to pursue a degree at Harvard University, where she painted, studied mountain travel narratives, and led backpacking trips. Now based in Lexington, Kentucky, Hudson takes part in national festivals and teaches workshops around the country. Kathleen emphasizes dynamic light and atmospherics in her landscape paintings.

figurative/portrait Cesar Santos Reveals Your True Potential with His Simple Yet Timeless Master Artist Techniques Learn how to see your subjects in an entirely new way. A distinguished artist reveals his special methods for creating powerful paintings of people.

“Love this video. It is 19 hours of painting knowledge! You see every stroke, and Cesar explains every little detail.” — Albert V.

Your chance for in-depth study under a top portrait and figure master.

H

umans have spent years honing their art skills by drawing other humans. There are many challenges when it comes to drawing people: Can you adequately capture the shape of a human body? Did you note the small details in the facial features? Did you achieve an emotional and personal connection while maintaining realism? Is the balance of proportion and composition correct? Each one of these tasks challenges an artist in a different way. By learning how to tackle each element, you learn important lessons that make your art better overall. Anyone can learn to draw and paint beautiful human subjects with the right instructor. Renowned master artist Cesar Santos can help you take your art to the next level. Cesar is a modern realist with a unique style. He uses modern and conventional art techniques to deliver impactful results. And he is here to share those techniques with you. The Science Behind Art Cesar Santos trained at an exclusive school in Florence, Italy — the Angel Academy of Art. In Florence, he studied under traditional masters who are very selective when it comes to picking their students. In these three videos, Cesar reveals the secret tips for capturing the personality, character, and essence of a

subject. The first thing you learn is how to view your subject with a scientific eye. Then, get a step-by-step approach to capturing the essence and personality. Finally, Cesar will teach you how to infuse your art with emotion, character, and a strong point of view, whether this is your first time picking up a paintbrush or you’re looking to elevate your work to the next level. Figures and Portraits In Secrets of Figure Drawing, you will get 17 hours of inclusive instruction from start to finish. Cesar Santos begins with an anatomy lesson to master the human form. Then he leads you through each step of completing a detailed and realistic figure. He reveals the secrets to creating gallery-quality drawings that are full of life and emotion. At the same time, he will help you overcome common mistakes with figure drawing. Additional tips include: • A complete A-to-Z solution for creating your first sketches • A list of unique tools you can use to get vivid texture and beautiful effects, including several forms of charcoal • The secret to working with shapes, volume, values, and light Secrets of Figure Painting provides more than 16 hours of hands-on lessons covering color, texture, brushwork, and composition. Cesar teaches you how to master flesh tones and capture gestures. In addition to sharing these practical tips, he’ll cover: • How to achieve color harmony • Tricks for perfecting body proportion and creating realistic facial features

CESAR SANTOS

• Creating an underpainting for more vibrant upper layers Secrets of Portrait Painting gives you 19 hours of expert guidance. You will learn how to open your artistic eye while viewing your subjects with your logical mind. Discover how to break down the details that make all the difference in your results. You’ll see how to capture the way the light picks up subtle shades in the hair or the nuance of a soft dimple. These seemingly small details come sharply into focus once you understand how to look at people the way an artist does. Throughout the course, you’ll also explore methods for: • Understanding how to add color and expression into your work • Mixing colors to keep your paintings realistic • Using light to your advantage All three courses will provide tips for setting up, using live models and photographs, picking and mixing paints, choosing brushes, and prepping your canvas. Plus, you’ll get the rare opportunity to watch a master complete a gorgeous painting from scratch while you follow his lead. Cesar Santos demonstrates his techniques in his own work. He explains the whys and hows for each method. As a bonus, each course includes a personal interview, so you learn about his fascinating progression to become a master artist. With these courses, Cesar provides you with an extraordinary education where you will learn techniques most artists are never exposed to. As he reveals the secrets that helped some of the world’s best painters become masters, you’ll uncover a whole new way to see the world around you.

About Your Art Instructor: Cesar Santos is a contemporary Cuban-American artist and portrait painter. He

earned his Associate in Arts degree at Miami Dade College. He traveled to Florence, Italy, where he completed the Fundamental Program in Drawing and Painting at the Angel Academy of Art, and he was part of the Hudson River Fellowship in 2010. figurative/portrait Explore How One Artist Brings the Timeless Russian Style to His Artwork

I

n Russian Master Portraits, you’re getting the opportunity to learn from one of Russia’s finest master Impressionists — Nikolai Blokhin. You’re about to see some techniques that have never been documented before. This is 19th-century art techniques of Russian Impressionism that have been handed down since the mid-1800s. Russians are famous for their style of Impressionism … thick paint, tremendous expression, and creating work that evokes powerful emotion. There’s also a certain exactness to their work — the creation of form and the feeling of the subject. This is the first time Blokhin’s work has been recorded where he instructs and demonstrates his own methods and techniques. “I Really Wanted to Own the Painting” An attendee at the 2019 Figurative Art Convention & Expo (FACE) watched Nikolai paint live on stage and, after seeing this master at work, she just had to have the painting. About Nikolai and the painting, the attendee says this: “There is movement everywhere in the painting. The colors are vibrant in the light of day and more beautiful under light. For me it was performance art, and I really wanted to own the painting. We were lucky to be able to purchase it that day.” Imagine Yourself There You’ll experience Nikolai’s amazing work space, including the coming and going of his studio cat … and you’ll see Nikolai get a physical workout as he conducts a full painting demonstration of Old Harlequin on a large canvas. You’ll feel as though you’re with Nikolai in his studio as he sorts through piles of paint tubes and searches his vast collection of brushes for just the right one. As you watch and learn, you’ll feel so close to Nikolai and his work that you’ll want to have the final painting for yourself, just to revel in this feeling forever. This will be one of the most unique videos in your collection

Highlights of Nikolai Blokin’s Russian Master Portraits video: • See Nikolai’s unusual techniques in action • How to go beyond the brush to create amazing effects • The secret to using thick paints • Plus much more!

because it’s a rare opportunity for you to see, first-hand, the Russian Impressionism methods used through the centuries. You’ll see a very brief insight into how Nikolai gets his model to pose, and how he lays out his locally produced St. Petersburg oil paints. Nikolai’s experience enables him to decide upon a strong composition and placement on the canvas with no preliminary sketches — a rarity among artists. You’ll see how Nikolai rapidly develops the details and accents that capture the likeness and expression of the model. Watch him apply globs of barely mixed paint as texture on the costume, spreading it here and there in gooey tendrils of color that become textile. Translated from Russian to English, Blokhin explains the fundamental stages of the entire process. He’ll use a variety of tools and mediums, like oil paints, turpentine, (dammar) varnish, and linseed oil. He’ll also show how he uses paper, sepia, chalk, or sepia pencil for drawing. You’ll be amazed by how the smallest scrape into the paint with a brush handle can create a feeling of soft light hitting a shoulder. Observe the broad sweep of rich, thin purple that pushes a section of fabric into shadow, giving form to an arm underneath. Watch how smudges made with the artist’s thumb become a passage of light on the figure. See how the model’s hand emerges with masterful additions of lighter and darker passages of paint.

In addition, the video also includes: • An interview with the artist conducted by Eric Rhoads • An exhibit of works by Nikolai Blokhin • High-speed video of the demonstration painting The extraordinary camerawork allows you to see from different angles and focus on the closeup details as you watch the demonstration painting — enticing you to watch again and again as you uncover each of the techniques that Nikolai shows you.

figurative/portrait Inside the Mind of a Great Master

M

any people feel like they’re not a proper artist until they can master portraits. It’s easy to understand why. Portraits require us to grasp the most complex 3-dimensional form of all, yet we still have to represent the subject’s character and emotion through the painting. And that’s not all... Since we’re talking about realism, you also have to think about skin texture, realistic skin tone, and hair detailing … plus how the light falls on the subject … how to apply colors that bring out the mood of the painting … and much more. There are a million different things you have to think about before you even start the painting itself! Daniel Sprick is the guy to talk to if you want to master portraits. This is your opportunity to learn from him and to apply his techniques to your portraits. In this course, you’ll get to see the master himself at work in his large, open, and naturally lit home studio in Denver, Colorado. Watch Dan and his model friend (who is also an artist) interact with each other throughout the entire process. You’ll hear them talk about art in general and also about the demonstration — it’s like you’re hanging out with them! You’ll learn how to approach portraits through the lens of Daniel Sprick’s unique thought process, giving you insights that could transform the way you approach your painting. Dan is going to teach you how to have a strong foundation for your painting, no matter what your preferred subject is. You’ll get to see the materials, tools, and types of paint he uses to create his masterpieces. You’ll discover his techniques for how to create a harmonious and expressive picture that brings out the hidden beauty of your subject. Here, he gives you a masterclass on the value of values, color temperature, and “edge control” that is going to cement your understanding of portrait painting even more. You’ll learn how to work from generalities (big shapes), and how to

slowly “sculpt” them into more specific depictions. (This is what makes Dan so unique.) There’s so much more in the masterclass and there is something for every level of painter.

When you see Dan paint, it’s like he’s catching something else, totally different, that not many artists can see. Which may be why he has had major museum shows, has been featured in a PBS documentary, and is

considered one of the premier artists in the world. Noticing that many painters don’t get their proportions correct, even after painting most of their lives, you’ll see how Dan does it so well. But don’t just take our word for it … let Dan show you the proper way! Using Dan’s techniques, you’ll get your proportions on point so they’ll look as accurate as possible. This alone will boost the look and feel of your work. Dan has a very particular way of seeing and approaching his subjects, and it isn’t something I see very often. And his work has a very edgy feel, which helps its traditional nature bridge into the contemporary world. Dan’s paintings are beyond incredible. There’s a certain depth to them I can’t really explain in words. Yet when you look up close, it’s not the detail you would normally see in a portrait. It’s as if Dan knows how to make you feel the details, but without actually putting them all in. Finally, Dan will show you how to understand how light works and how it affects your painting, along with tips and strategies guaranteed to make you an even better portrait painter. His approach to art is very different from anyone else’s on earth. When you watch, you’ll see for yourself — it’s absolutely magical!

About Your Art Instructor: When Daniel Sprick was just four years old, his father created a drawing and handed that and a pencil to the young boy. Daniel was hooked and he’s been drawing and painting for more than 40 years. At about 20 years of age, Dan got serious about his art and threw himself into it — painting became do-or-die and he approached it as if his life depended on it. A connoisseur of art, he has studied art history for the entirety of his career. Dan identifies with being a 19th century naturalist painter who has experienced the last century go right past him. Dan lives and works in Colorado.

Brushwork & Backlight Cheri Christensen

DCC4 • 3h 36m • $161 $127

egardless of the subject matter — animals, people, landscapes, seascapes, or cityscapes, Cheri Christensen loves to paint color and light! For Cheri, it’s about exploring different approaches to see and interpret form, lines, color, and light. Through the years, we’ve invited Cheri Christensen into our studio multiple times to film instructional videos. Cheri is a highly talented and popular artist and instructor who has the ability to teach artists at every level — from beginner hobbyists to advanced professionals. Cheri’s approach will allow you to become more confident in your work. She’ll teach you to loosen up your brushstrokes, use different tools to add interest, and she even shares the secrets of her signature style — backlighting and highlighting! She’ll show you how to use color and light to give new and vibrant life to your paintings. All of Cheri’s video tutorials will help you with both general and specific skills. Cheri is an excellent workshop leader who offers value to each student — she has something for everyone! All throughout these videos, Cheri emphasizes beautiful backlighting, highlighting, and how to showcase exactly what you want your viewers to focus on when they see your work! About That Brushwork! If you’ve ever looked closely at paintings where the brushstrokes are highly visible, you know how much interest this brings to the piece. Using a variety of brushes and brushstrokes will help you bring this level of excitement into your own work. Best part? You’ll be

doing this without taking a lot of extra time because Cheri will teach you to paint quickly and boldly! In addition, Cheri will have you using color like never before. You’ll be adding blue in the shadows and yellow or red to skin tones — you’ll be breaking a few rules and then enjoying how much drama that brings into your paintings! How Many Tubes of White Paint Does It Take? We have a love affair with tubes of paint … especially tubes of WHITE PAINT! There are so many shades to choose from … don’t we need them all? White paint looks clean, pure, and dramatic — and we love to use white paint for just these reasons. So do we really need dozens of tubes of “white” paint? Actually, no … we don’t need very many (if any)! Cheri is a genius when it comes to painting the color white! In fact, her video The Color of White: Make Your Whites Come to Life will show you that white objects are rarely ever pure white! Watch and learn as Cheri shows you the very “un-exact” science of white paint — you must see this to believe it! No more frustrating and endless searches to find the perfect shade of white because you’ll create white by using a variety of colors. You’ll actually be generating the feeling of white rather than painting with white! Though Cheri loves to create paintings of animals (maybe you do, too!) what she teaches about painting with white is critical to nearly every

subject (think about clouds, white dresses, snow, buildings, cars … the list could go on forever!) Let’s face it, a thorough understanding of painting with the color white is mandatory for every artist. Whether you prefer landscapes, still life, figures, or cityscapes, the principles of white still apply. Cheri has proven again and again that her methods for bringing the perfect white into a painting are SO much more than squeezing paint from a tube! She’ll help you see the key to achieving successful whites is a blend of skill and maybe even a little calculated trickery! See It All! In all of her videos, this amazing artist holds nothing back — you’ll see everything Cheri has learned in her decades as a professional artist and instructor, allowing you to skip the frustration of “trying it but not liking it” so you can get right to the good stuff! Adding Cheri’s videos to your own learning library is an investment in yourself and your art. You’ll refer to these videos again and again as you try new techniques to bring story, color, lighting, and interest to all of your paintings.

a rare chance to see and paint the real russia Sept. 10-25, 2021

hen I first visited Russia, I fell in love with the people, the scenery, and the Russian paintings. I’ve been back many times and, next time, I’m taking 50 painters with me to tour and paint Russia. Not just the Russia of the movies, but the real Russia! We’ll tour and paint in historic Saint Petersburg, arguably the most beautiful city in the world. We’ll also see and paint the highlights of Moscow. But it’s between these great cities where we’ll find the real gems. We’ll visit the home and studio of famed Russian artist Ilya Repin. We’ll paint quaint villages and stunning landscapes in the exact same places as the great Russian landscape painters Shiskin and Levitan. We’ll tour the three great Russian museums: The Hermitage, The State Tretyakov Gallery, and The Russian Museum. We’ll have the chance to paint with Russian master Nicholai Dubovik and visit great Russian art schools. We’ll open doors few others could ever open.

You’ll leave with a great appreciation for Russian art, you’ll discover the warm and wonderful Russian people (not what you see in the movies), and you’ll want to come back again and again. Best of all, you’ll travel with people who know the real Russia, you’ll grow as an artist, establish new and lasting friendships, and paint the memories from your time there. I’m opening doors to my friends and contacts in Russia to create this unforgettable painting trip in September, 2021, but I can only take 46 people. Eric Rhoads, Publisher

How to Paint Flowers Outside Kathy Anderson DKAN2 • 3h 22m $161 $127

here’s something special about the colorful blooms in a garden that calls out to us. The natural beauty and delicate shading of flowers is something artists have always wanted to capture. From Monet’s Water Lilies and Van Gogh’s Sunflowers to Georgia O’Keeffe’s Red Poppy, there have long been masterpieces that originated in the garden. And the skills mastered in painting flowers transfer well beyond the garden. To master floral painting, one must have a strong command of color, value, lines, edges, and shading. There’s a reason art schools teach florals. Artists who master these skills have an opportunity to take their art to the next level. In these three videos, Kathy Anderson shows you in detail how to master painting flowers. From composition to completion, she shows you every brushstroke and explains every color choice. Study with Kathy and create your next floral painting from your studio, or outdoors in the garden.

Like a Fly on the Wall This video is a true “behind the scenes” look at how Tom creates a painting from start to finish. Like a fly on the wall of his studio, you’ll see that, rather than jumping into the painting itself, Thomas starts with intent. Tom will help you determine the “why” for each of your paintings because that is where you’ll find the source of your inspiration, and it’s the place from which your own artistic voice will emerge … and that is the true desire of most artists, isn’t it? Tom is considered the best watercolor instructor in America. His workshops are always sold out, but you’re getting a whole workshop on video! You’ll find Tom to be a very articulate, experienced instructor whose communication style is easy to follow. He freely shares the brilliant techniques that have brought much attention and many awards to his work. Tom shares valuable insights behind his every brushstroke. Gaining this deeper understanding of why he makes decisions and uses certain techniques is what will help you move far beyond your current skill level. Making Complex Paintings Simple If you’ve ever struggled to paint complex subject matter … or you’ve avoided a subject because it just seemed too difficult, you’re going to

love how Tom shows you different ways you can easily include more complex elements in your paintings. He’ll help you break down the complex into manageable parts that become much easier to paint. He’ll show you how to combine man-made architectural features with the natural world so your paintings will have a harmonious flow to them. You will easily learn from Tom as he shares his best methods and techniques for developing your own voice and then using that voice to tell your stories through your paintings. You’ll learn his entire painting process. Why This Video Tutorial Will Make You a Stronger Painter You’re going to find this video to be a must-have for your personal learning library. You’ll want to keep it handy so you can refer to it again and again as you try each of the techniques Tom shows you. You’ll want to capture every insight he shares and then watch carefully or paint right along with Tom as he does a full start-to-finish demonstration of Ponte Vittorio Emanuelle — Rome.

or watercolor artist Dan Marshall, there’s nothing more exhilarating than coming upon a landscape or cityscape so inspiring that you feel compelled to paint it! If you’ve experienced this feeling but find your paintings just don’t reflect that mood, it’s time to study with Dan Marshall! Whether your passion is cityscape, landscape, or figurative art (or all!), Dan will show you how to take a complex scene and boil it down to the essentials. You’ll still keep the personality of the place but you’ll also be letting your own excitement come through. Soon, you’ll be telling more interesting stories through your paintings. =Your focus will shift to creating artwork that is a personal translation, not a duplication. Dan shows you his signature style of ‘loose accuracy’ — a loose style of handling paint with direct brushstrokes that also allow you to stay accurate. Paint right along and see how Dan mixes each of five thicknesses of paint —

from the consistency of tea all the way to the thickness of butter! From there, he’ll show you when you need to use each of these piles of paint to get the look you want. It’s time to say goodbye to wimpy watercolor and welcome in your new dramatic and emotional style! You’ll find Dan’s methods and techniques relevant to any medium and all subject matters — landscapes, cityscapes, figurative works, whatever your passion.

About Your Art Instructor: Growing up in Ohio and finishing his education in Connecticut at the Propersi Institute of Art, Dan is used to adapting to different environments. As a successful tattoo artist, Dan has been fortunate to experience travel all over the world, offering him frequent opportunities to draw and paint the scenes he finds along the way.

Working from the live model, Schneider explains his compositional devices, use of the Munsell Color System in selecting a color scheme, and how to keep the Big Four (shape, value, color temperature, edges) in mind during the painting process. Is Your Art Not Getting Noticed by All the Right People?

S

ome say a lack of exposure is the sole problem for artists. But getting the right exposure, leaving the right impression, and making your content more memorable and worthy of being shared can be a bit more complex than that. Other artists are under the mistaken belief that honing their artistic skills alone will skyrocket their art career. Most successful artists would tell you that artistic skills alone do not ensure business success. Most artists’ best work goes unseen by the very people who can change an artist’s career. Unfortunately, this is not a new phenomenon. Van Gogh is probably the best-known case of a starving artist; he sold just two of his approximately 2,000 works during his lifetime. Recently one of Van Gogh’s paintings sold for $82.5 million. Van Gogh could have lived a much different life with some basic marketing skills. Learning marketing is crucial for artists. The key elements are ethical, and they result in artists’ having greater control over their public image and their relationship with clients. The good news is that honing your marketing skills doesn’t have to be difficult. No true artist should struggle to be discovered, heard, appreciated, and compensated. That’s the core message of Eric Rhoads’ new book, Make More Money Selling Your Art: Proven Techniques for Turning Your Passion Into Profit. In this book, Rhoads shares his experiences as an entrepreneur, marketer, and artist. He breaks down classical, proven marketing techniques and explains how these techniques can be practically applied by artists. Unleash your art career and get your copy today!
