rt workshops provide wonderful ways for people of all ages and levels of ability to explore their creative interests. The only expectation is that participants try to choose the workshops that best meet their budgets, availability, and goals. Those goals would presumably include the acquisition of knowledge of how to properly use art materials and techniques, and perhaps the desire to receive one-onone guidance in creating expressive works of art. One of the unanticipated benefits of a workshop will be the opportunity to meet informally with other students and make friends with people who share one’s interest in art. The participants will pick up a lot of helpful tips about painting and professional activities, and they will be comforted by W2
the fact that just about everyone else feels the same anxieties, confusions, and joys. As one workshop participant put it, being part of a workshop is like studying a language for years and finally visiting the country where it is spoken. Generally, workshops are three- to 14-daylong educational programs, sometimes requiring participants to travel some distance to attend and to stay in a motel or school dorm. There are some standard routines in most workshops, including demonstrations by the instructor, critiques of student work, and one-on-one assistance for the students, but other aspects of these classes will vary from one session to another and from one teacher to another.
February-March 2018 / www.pleinairmagazine.com
As with any educational program that requires an expenditure of time and money, it is recommended that artists find out as much as they can in advance about the instructor’s teaching skills, style, daily routine, and level of organization, and what impression he or she has left with people who have participated in previous workshops. DEVELOPING A PERSONAL STYLE
When studying art in a class, workshop, atelier, or personal studio, one of the issues that might come up is how artists establish a personal style. Years ago, the editors at an art book company conducted a survey to determine the subjects they should cover in upcoming publications, and one of the top requests
Thomas Jefferson Kitts offering a demonstration

was for a book that provided specific guidance in establishing a personal style. The respondents were looking for help in bringing a distinctive look to their paintings, one that would help make their paintings easier to identify and appreciate and more attractive to potential buyers. When the editors searched for someone who could develop such a book, however, they couldn’t find an author capable of giving dependable advice and concrete examples of such an individual, personal quality. Style may be both the most important and the most elusive aspect of painting. It requires mastering the fundamentals — drawing, shapes, values, edges, perspective, scale, balance, harmony, and surface development — but also searching for what will express the artist’s individual response to a subject as well as his or her ability to communicate that response to people who view the work. Most artists begin their careers exploring variations on their teachers’ styles, or they imitate the style of a wellknown artist. As they experiment with materials and ideas over time, they change their palette of colors, procedures, and subject matter. Developing an identifiable personal style of painting seems to be very important to artists who’ve only recently begun painting outdoors. Unless an

artist has a great deal of experience painting in a studio, however, the issue of style needs to be put aside until he or she has spent a few years painting in the field. In most cases, a definite style will evolve without conscious effort. It just seems to happen as you make decisions about your favorite places to paint, the colors you prefer to use, the manner in which you apply paint to a substrate, and the amount of detail you want to include in a painted image. Some of the artists who were consulted by the book editors mentioned above said much the same thing,
explaining that a style evolves naturally during the process of painting a large body of work. There is no way to predict what distinctive elements of design, color, subject matter, or pattern might constitute a style. Speculation about what might contribute most to the development of a style would be like forecasting the weather six months in advance. Past experience might be a guide, but it wouldn’t be a firm indicator. If you ask a number of painters how they arrived at their style, they will often mention the influence of images seen early in their lives, especially those reproduced on posters or prints or in books or magazines. They might even recall one specific moment when they saw a painting in a gallery or museum that motivated them to say to themselves, “Someday I want to be able to paint like that.” Those early impressions and ambitions usually linger in the mind, taking artists on a journey to find their own method for painting in the manner of Rembrandt, Wyeth, de Kooning, or Cézanne. In the end, their ultimate professional style of painting is founded in those early visions. Knowing this, a person can make a conscious and deliberate attempt to eventually “paint like that” with his or her own variation on the master’s signature style.

PERSONAL STYLE Kevin J. Avery provides some reflections on two historical artists, and one modern master, and their personal styles.
Frederic Edwin Church
Thomas Moran
Carolyn Anderson
Frederic Edwin Church (1826-1900) was hailed as the greatest American landscape painter of his generation. His own teacher, Thomas Cole, the founding figure of the Hudson River School, said of his student that he had “the finest eye for drawing in the world.” Cole meant not merely Church’s eye and hand with a pencil — with which he was indeed startling in perception and articulation — but also his dexterity with a brush in the field, which was uncanny and only sharpened with time.
Thomas Moran (1837-1926) may be the only American artist with a mountain named after him: Mount Moran, in Wyoming’s Grand Teton range. Moran’s reputation is indelibly linked with the grandeur of Western scenery. He was the first professional artist to depict the Yellowstone region of northwest Wyoming and the Grand Canyon in Arizona. Moran’s vivid watercolors of Yellowstone, worked up from cursory plein air sketches, helped persuade Congress to declare it America’s first national park in 1872.
When we look at subjects, we form general impressions and not detailed inventories. That’s why Carolyn Anderson believes our paintings should be developed according to the levels of importance of what we see. “Visual experience is more than just our eyes sending signals of contrast and color to our brains,” says the Montana artist. “What we see in front of us is a combination of what we know and what we expect to see. It is our past and our present, our memories and our sense of space and place. It is time itself.”

AMERICA’S GREAT ART INSTRUCTORS ON YOUR SCREEN
I
n creating Slow Water, an idyllic summer stream scene, MacDonald will take you through a detailed step-by-step process of painting: from building an effective composition to establishing a solid value structure and vibrant color relationships to finishing with sensitively chosen details. Each of these crucial components of a painting will be explained and demonstrated. Whether painting plein air or using photographs for reference in the studio, you will come to a clearer understanding of how a successful painting is structured, see these essential basics anew, and discover ways to use them that will improve the craft of your painting.
