Plein Air Painting Is the Largest Movement in Art History … and Growing

I

f you study art history, as I have, you’ll learn that evidence of plein air painting goes back a few hundred years. Over time, painters have been inspired to take brush and canvas outside. As a result, small plein air movements have arisen. The best known were Impressionism, Post-Impressionism, and the Barbizon School. But each of these involved just a handful of artists. Of course, America has its own rich history with the Hudson River School, which involved sketching, oil sketching, and in some rare cases, full paintings on location. Later, artists like Theodore Robinson, J. Alden Weir, and a small number of others who had lived and studied in Paris brought their impressionist styles back to America. As a result, plein air movements grew up in the East and in the West. But nothing in the history of art has ever seen a movement this large, a movement that has become a lifestyle. I like to say it’s the new golf. Whether amateurs, hobbyists, or professionals, thousands of artists are living the lifestyle of outdoor painting. Like golf, it is mentally challenging and stimulating, it’s social, and it’s relaxing and allows you to forget everything else for a while. It involves being outdoors in beautiful places, provides some exercise, and can even lead to world travel. But unlike golf, it means using your creative brain and is an outlet for developing your artistic ability. And for some it can provide an income, or at least the gratification of being occasionally involved in shows or sales. We are seeing thousands adopt this lifestyle, which means more painters’ groups, more events and shows, and more people being exposed to original art and collecting it. Artists are also joining the exotic trips PleinAir magazine has created (Cuba, Africa, New Zealand), and attending retreats that are all painting and not workshops, like my Adirondack and Fall Color Week events. Of course they want to be part of a community and want to learn and grow, which is why the Plein Air Convention & Expo is now attracting about a thousand people each year. Our PleinAir Podcast has also been bringing more people into painting. Like last time, we expect a hundred or so people to show up at our next convention who have never painted before and who’ll buy all their supplies at the event. And we’re seeing more young people coming into the plein air lifestyle. Our role is not only to create experiences that scratch their itch to participate, but to hold up the best examples of quality and encourage growth and high standards. This annual guide is evidence of the growth and success of this movement. We all play a role in keeping it moving forward and helping it grow, while keeping standards high so that plein air does not become known for low-quality artwork, but for high-quality paintings, often created after years or decades of experience and growth. We can keep this movement growing and alive for generations to come by helping others paint — reinforcing my goal of helping 1 million people learn to paint — because it changes lives. Most painters never go pro, will never do shows or even show their work, yet with our help they will be introduced to a life as an artist, which is rich and rewarding. Thank you for the role you play.

BUILDING COMMUNITY THROUGH PLEIN AIR EVENTS

A Guide for Artists, Collectors & Organizers By Kelly Kane

ou don’t have to look far to find proof that the plein air movement is thriving. With events across the country, artists, collectors, and enthusiasts have myriad opportunities to indulge in their favorite form of painting. Drawn together by an appreciation of nature, an enthusiasm for the local landscape, and, of course, a love of art, thousands of people gather for plein air events every year. Out of these shared experiences, a sense of community arises — an awareness that all involved have come together to celebrate and contribute to one of today’s most exciting forms of artistic expression: plein air painting. If you’re wondering how you might join in the fun and find your own place in these unique gatherings, we asked a few members of the community to share their insights.

Coleen West, Executive Director of the Howard County Arts Council “Started in 2011, Paint It! Ellicott City began as a community outreach initiative to commemorate the 4

Howard County Arts Council’s 30th anniversary. Today, the event creates a festive, welcoming atmosphere and offers a memorable experience for residents and tourists of all ages. It also provides increased opportunities for both established and emerging artists to exhibit and sell their work, increased opportunities for the public to engage with artists, and increased foot traffic to historic Main Street restaurants and shops. “In return, the local community has been very generous. We have partners who assist in planning and implementing the event, sponsors who help underwrite it, and local businesses that provide discounts, marketing, and hospitality services to participating artists. “We’ve found that in addition to being professional artists, plein air painters are professional tourists; they connect immediately with the local community and fellow artists from the area. A tight-knit group, many of these artists travel regularly and see one another at other plein air events or at least know of each other’s work through workshops, retreats, and publications such as

PleinAir magazine. They’re a congenial group and make friends immediately — as is evident during our quick draw competition, where they mingle with the public and other artists, freely sharing their experiences and techniques. “At the end of the event, the Arts Council hosts a six-week exhibit of work produced by the juried artists during the paint-out. Open to artists, collectors, and the general public, a special reception and award ceremony is held during the exhibit, with remarks by the juror and our sponsors.”

Dan Marshall, plein air watercolor painter “I’ve been painting plein air for about six years, but participated in my first events — the Plein Air Convention & Expo in San Diego and the Laguna Plein Air Painters Association Invitational — in 2017. Painting at these events has allowed me to form treasured long-term bonds and friendships with fellow artists. The camaraderie and inspiration is unequaled. Plus, the networking at these

events has led to amazing opportunities that wouldn’t have presented themselves otherwise. It’s great to be involved in what has become a renewed art movement; my enthusiasm for painting plein air just grows and grows!”

Marie Pierre Nuthall, Coordinator, Plein Air Easton “In July 2019, Plein Air Easton will celebrate its 15th year. The sustained involvement of hundreds of volunteers, business owners, and neighbors has blossomed into a sense of pride in place and a celebration of the Chesapeake Bay landscape. The body of work produced during Plein Air Easton has recorded and preserved history through art, especially with the Vanishing Landscape award category. “Plein Air Easton has been embraced by Talbot County residents well beyond the art-buying public. Neighbors pass out lemonade to artists and passersby on hot days. Watermen leave their boats at dock so a painting can be finished. Many gracious residents open up their homes, guest houses, and spare rooms to host artists during the week. And local business owners produce plein air-themed store windows, free art demos, specials, exhibits, and giveaways, as well as graciously sponsor awards. Plein Air Easton relies on nearly 300 volunteers, who engage in producing the event. While some work for a few hours during the event, many work tireless hours throughout the year. The event also relies on interns, who get meaningful work experience in event production. Plein Air Easton is truly a community-wide celebration. “The event begins with a series of small, informal paint-outs, where serious collectors can engage and evaluate the year’s competitors. The big kickoff event is the Meet the Artist Party, which is held on one of Talbot County’s many grand estates and culminates in a dinner under the stars and an exhibit of the day’s work on the property. During the afternoon, patrons stroll or travel by golf cart throughout the property to watch the progress of competitors’ work. Throughout the week, we produce many events where artists and patrons can interact and get to know one another personally. “Plein Air Easton has been described variously as a Disney World or summer camp for plein air artists. When participants are received in the spirit of friendship and nurturing gratitude, as they are with the staff, locals, and volunteers, they are quickly put at ease before the competition even begins. Setting the tone is paramount to a successful competition and creates a relaxed atmosphere where the competition artists do not 6

have to worry about the details, allowing them to settle in and do what they do best — create amazing art.”

Lillian Ansley, Olmsted Plein Air Co-Founder “Collectors are thrilled to have the opportunity to meet and buy from invited artists, so we provide many social events for them to interact with participants. Our local artists also appreciate the opportunity to mingle with and learn from the world-class painters who participate in the Invitational, which will celebrate its fifth year in 2019. They’ve expressed time and time again that by placing value on original art and by creating an appreciation for it across the area’s demographics, Olmsted Plein Air has bolstered their own careers. Attracting corporate sponsorship and media attention has been a challenge in a metro area, but we have been fortunate to align with other large nonprofits in the community.”

Kathie Odom, plein air oil painter “When you come together with other artists to produce 100-plus paintings, then celebrate the work with area residents, you can’t help but feel part of something big. I got hooked on plein air events in 2013, when I participated in one in Callaway Gardens, Georgia, where I received an Honorable Mention and a Saturday-morning First Place in the quick draw competition. Although satisfying my love of plein air would have been reward enough, these events have pushed me forward professionally and helped me launch a full-time career as an oil painter. I am on year six now.”

Nancy Tyler, Outdoor Painters Society “Outdoor Painters Society (OPS) began Plein Air Southwest (PASW) about 15 years ago as a ‘salon’ event, giving members the opportunity to enter an annual show with submissions painted

at specific paint-out locations the previous year. A few years later, the specific location requirement was lifted, but the annual event remained a salon show hosted by a Dallas gallery. In 2018, OPS reinvented PASW into a full-blown plein air competition, show, and sale along the Texas Coast in Rockport, Texas, where we were welcomed with open arms. Our presence in the area a few short months after the Hurricane Harvey destruction gave the residents a feeling of importance and stability after the storm. And the publicity we generated for the coastal resort area gave them the boost they needed to start the vacation season. “Of course, Texas hospitality is known worldwide, and PASW organizers work hard to arrange housing for the participating artists with the locals. The benefit is threefold. It engulfs the artists in the day-to-day culture of the area. The hosts and their neighbors get to know the artists, and in many cases, form lifelong friendships. Plus, the artists are able to limit their expenses during the event, which enables OPS to attract artists from coast to coast. “We also encourage our participating artists to attend the opening night patron reception and mix with the local patrons, which creates wonderful camaraderie. Collectors buy the art they love, and when they have the artist’s story to accompany the work, it provides added value for them.” No matter how you join in — as a participating artist, collector, volunteer, or observer — you have an important role to play in maintaining the momentum of the plein air movement and in the success of such events. The pages that follow are jampacked with excellent opportunities. Find an event near you and see what you’ve been missing. KELLY KANE is editor-in-chief of PleinAir magazine.
