Plein Air Painting Is the Largest Movement in Art History … and Growing

I

f you study art history, as I have, you’ll learn that evidence of plein air painting goes back a few hundred years. Over time, painters have been inspired to take brush and canvas outside. As a result, small plein air movements have arisen. The best known were Impressionism, Post-Impressionism, and the Barbizon School. But each of these involved just a handful of artists. Of course, America has its own rich history with the Hudson River School, which involved sketching, oil sketching, and in some rare cases, full paintings on location. Later, artists like Theodore Robinson, J. Alden Weir, and a small number of others who had lived and studied in Paris brought their impressionist styles back to America. As a result, plein air movements grew up in the East and in the West. But nothing in the history of art has ever seen a movement this large, a movement that has become a lifestyle. I like to say it’s the new golf. Whether amateurs, hobbyists, or professionals, thousands of artists are living the lifestyle of outdoor painting. Like golf, it is mentally challenging and stimulating, it’s social, and it’s relaxing and allows you to forget everything else for a while. It involves being outdoors in beautiful places, provides some exercise, and can even lead to world travel. But unlike golf, it uses your creative brain and is an outlet for developing your artistic ability. And for some it can provide an income, or at least the gratification of being occasionally involved in shows or sales. We are seeing thousands adopt this lifestyle, which means more painters’ groups, more events and shows, and more people being exposed to and collecting original art. They are also joining the exotic trips PleinAir Magazine has created (Cuba, Africa, New Zealand), and attending retreats that are all painting and not workshops, like my Adirondack and Fall Color Week events. Of course they want to be part of a community and want to learn and grow, which is why the Plein Air Convention & Expo is now attracting about a thousand people each year. Our PleinAir Podcast has also been bringing more people into painting. Like last time, we expect a hundred or so people to show up at our next convention who have never painted before and who’ll buy all their supplies at the event. And we’re seeing more young people coming into the plein air lifestyle. Our role is to not only create experiences that scratch their itch to participate, but to hold up the best examples of quality and encourage growth and high standards. This annual guide is evidence of the growth and success of this movement. We all play a role in keeping it moving forward and helping it grow, while keeping standards high so plein air does not become known for low-quality artwork, but for high-quality paintings, often created after years or decades of experience and growth. We can keep this movement growing and alive for generations to come by helping others paint — reinforcing my goal of helping 1 million people learn to paint, because it changes lives. Most will never go pro, will never do shows or even show their work, yet with our help they will be introduced to a life as an artist, which is rich and rewarding. Thank you for the role you play.

BUILDING COMMUNITY THROUGH PLEIN AIR EVENTS

A Guide for Artists, Collectors & Organizers

The local geography provides inspiration.

P

lein Air Easton, the largest and one of the most prestigious juried plein air painting competitions in the United States, celebrated its 15th anniversary this summer. President/ CEO Al Bond and CFO/COO Jessica Bellis of event organizer the Avalon Foundation spoke to PleinAir Magazine Publisher Eric Rhoads recently to share their experience and best advice for artists, collectors, and fellow event coordinators. Eric Rhoads: To start, what is the Avalon Foundation? Al Bond: The Avalon Foundation is the largest arts organization on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. We put on about 160 live music performances a year, an annual Fourth of July celebration, a farmers’ market, and a number of other outdoor events, as well as Plein Air Easton. Rhoads: What makes Easton a good place to hold a plein air festival? Bond: We certainly live in an area that has the elements necessary for a successful event. We have 6

great geography, and our demographic has a level of affluence that can afford to buy art. Jessica Bellis: We’re also about an hour and 15 minutes from D.C. and Baltimore, two hours from Philly, and three from New York City. So we’re a really beautiful, commutable place from a lot of metropolitan areas. Rhoads: How many people does it take to put on the event? Bellis: We have 13 employees who work for our non-profit organization, and basically for the month of July, their main focus shifts from concert promotion and some of the other communityfocused activities that they work on the other 11 months of the year to the plein air event. On top of that, we have a community of close to 250 volunteers who step up and work at the actual festival, and 25 to 30 committee chairs and event heads who work all year round to make sure that the festival happens. And that doesn’t even count our host families and the local businesses that participate

in the festival, so it really is a full community lift. The differentiating factor is that some of that lift is orchestrated by paid employees, which I think gives us a huge edge. Bond: Unlike the small art clubs, galleries, or groups of volunteers who form a lot of other plein air festivals, the Avalon Foundation fundamentally is in the events business. We have the bench in our human resources to organize a really large and complicated event. As a start-up, most organizations don’t have that. Rhoads: Why do a plein air event? Is it a fundraiser for the Avalon Foundation or just a cool thing to do for your community? Bond: Part of the mission of the Avalon Foundation is to create a vibrant community, and we use arts and culture in order to do that. Certainly, there are plein air events out there that are intended to raise money for some cause. Plein air is the cause for us, and we essentially re-invest the dollars that come in through art sales and contributions from

B E S T P R AC T I C E S F O R A R T I S T S 1. “Have a positive, public-facing attitude,” says Bellis. “And that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t provide criticism or complaints to the people who organize these events — especially constructive feedback (some of our best ideas have come from artists) — but I think you praise in public and criticize in private. So my advice if you’re choosing to enter the competition circuit, and the weather’s lousy or you’re having a bad day or you feel like the event is disorganized, standing around and griping about it is a really terrible way to encourage people to buy your artwork. The consumer feels that energy and they don’t want to bring it in and hang it up on their walls.” Artists paint on location.

Collectors take in the paintings for sale.

2. “If you’re interested in getting into highquality competitions, make sure that the images you send in represent your best work and have been photographed by a professional; it makes such a difference,” says Bond. “Let’s face it, there are more than 58 really talented painters who apply to our event each year, and when I go back and look at the entries that the juror had to review, I’m sometimes astonished at how the images don’t reflect what I know to be the caliber of the artist’s work.” Bellis adds, “Read the instructions, and upload images of the right size, with the proper dpi. These are what the juror looks at, and you need to put your best foot forward every time.” 3. “Use your gallery pricing when you’re at these events,” says Bellis. “If you have prices listed on any of your work online, collectors are looking it up and they’re fact-checking what you’re putting in front of them. If you are pricing below your gallery pricing, you’re just offending your collectors and the organizations at that are running these events.” “Sales are so high at Easton, we’ve had the opposite happen, too, where artists raise the prices on their work — and that’s equally offensive to your collectors,” says Bond. “Over time, you should work on making your prices higher. Just don’t ever take a step back on your pricing.” 4. “Yes, stay true to your gallery pricing,” says Bellis. “At Easton, we don’t allow any negotiating or discounting — I think that’s a really bad idea for a festival or an artist. If on the closing Sunday, people know that prices get slashed on the inventory, or if you’re trying to run back deals out of your car on the way out of town, you train your buyers not to value the artwork that you are creating.”

BEST PRACTICES FOR EVENTS 1. “The quality of the entire experience is critically important to elevating the artwork,” says Bond. “That is to say, where do you show the artwork? Is the lighting high quality? Are the events well-run, allowing the public to access them in ways that are enjoyable — no lines, for example?” 2. “Make sure that the artists are happy,” he adds. “We believe that if we do that, two things are going to be true. First, they are going to tell their collecting public that it’s a great event and they should be part of it. Second, they’re going to tell their artist friends that it’s a great event and they should be part of it. That loop brings more quality artists to the event and brings in collectors.” 3. “Keep your partners happy,” says Bond. “The scale of our event takes not only our 13 employees, and all the volunteers we mentioned, but also 30 or so other organizations or businesses within the community. Those partnerships add content to the event. The thing to remember about your partners is that every single one of them, whether it be a volunteer or another arts organization, wants to get something out of their participation. You better know what that is and you better deliver it. Having engaged and happy partners keeps the content rich.” Bellis adds, “We need to make sure that those educational opportunities are there because there are a lot of people who want to pick up a paintbrush and also hang a painting in their house.”

The community comes together around plein air painting.

the public into the festival. So we’re capitalizing this event in a way that’s unusual. Bellis: This model has also led to sustainability. So, while it’s a profitable event for the Avalon Foundation as a whole, it’s designed to cover its own costs. When we’re successful, we’re able to re-invest in the event, which is how we’ve been able to sustain interest for such a long period of time. We’re always adding new activities, new concepts, new events, new parties, new gallery events, and new partnerships. Rhoads: So how did it all begin? Bond: It happened in stages for me. The owner of the South Street Gallery at the time, a woman named Patricia Spitaleri, made a meeting with me. At that point, I was the economic development director for the town of Easton, and she introduced me to the chief conservator for the National Gallery and an avid plein air painter, Ross Merrill. They made the case that Easton would be a great place for a plein air festival. While I really didn’t know much about plein air at that time, I was looking for an event that was representational-art-related because we have a lot of resources in the community. The thing that grabbed my attention was the notion that plein air is experienced by the public not just as a finished painting on the wall, but also as the artistic and creative process unfolding in real time. You can see what the artist is seeing; you can see the decisions they’re making with their brush; you can ask them questions as long as you’re not stopping the process too much. It is a much more immersive way of experiencing two-dimensional art than is true in most cases. It occurred to me that baby boomers, in particular, want to engage in their leisure activities in a way that allows them to be much more a part of it, not just act as observers.

It wasn’t until Nancy Tankersley bought the South Street Gallery from Patricia about a year later, and brought real concrete experience from participating in the big California events, that we really got things going. That was 2005. We had our first meeting in January and held our first event in July. Rhoads: How many people do you draw to the festival now? Bond: As you know, when running an outdoor activity that is free and open to the public, exact counts are difficult, but we estimate between 6,000 and 8,000 people participate in the event in some way each year — whether they attend the Quick Draw or one of the many other smaller events that take place over the course of about a week and a half. Rhoads: How much money do you generate in sales? Bond: Last year, we hit a new benchmark. We exceeded $400,000 in art sales. Rhoads: What percentage of that do the artists get to keep? Bellis: It depends on the event where the art is produced. The 58 juried artists make a deal with us for a traditional 60-40 split that you may get at a gallery, but we also have a lot of opportunities for other people to register and paint out at our event. If you participate in the Quick Draw, for example, then it’s a 75-25 split. Rhoads: So if I’m a painter, but I’m not one of the juried artists, I can still come and paint at Easton? Bellis: Everybody says it feels like summer camp. We have a lot of structured events — a nocturne paint-out, a Quick Draw. We’ve also got two days of a rehearsed Quick Draw competition, where

11/8/19 6:56 PM

Educational opportunities enrich the event.

you can come and practice and then have your Quick Draw work critiqued by other plein air painters. There are opportunities to paint and sell even if you’re not one of the 58 juried artists, and there are certainly opportunities to connect with a lot of people who are enthusiastic about plein air painting. Rhoads: How do you feel about having artists who are not professionals participating in your event? Do you worry that makes a statement about the quality of the event? Bond: There are two pieces to that. One, we are a juried competition, as it relates to the main competition, not an invitational, so we welcome everybody to apply. We put a lot of attention on who we select as our juror so that we get a really qualified look at the images that are put forth; we want to see the cream rise to the top. Certainly many of the same artists get into Plein Air Easton year after year, even though we have a different juror every year, but we also get those new people who have the capacity, but perhaps aren’t well known on the scene — the breakout artists who wow everybody. We think of our competition as a meritocracy. A lot of those new faces end up being nationally recognized as a result of getting their first chance at Plein Air Easton. The other piece of it, though, is our Quick Draw, where all you need is $10 and ambition to participate. Our notion really is that when you see what the best plein air painters in the nation are capable of doing in two hours, and then when you look at what that new painter who is just getting their feet under them can do in the same time period, it is apparent where the talent is. I don’t think it pulls the top people down at all to be compared to people that they’re better than.

Local collectors and art enthusiasts celebrate with juried artists.

“There are a lot of people who want to pick up a paintbrush and also hang a painting in their house.” — Jessica Bellis

Bellis: I would say this — and it relates to marketing — if you are out there as a professional painter and you are participating in events where amateur or pro-am painters are involved, you are really acting as an example and an ambassador, but you are also creating a group of fans and collectors who will likely follow you. And the more engaged you can be with people who are interested in art and having art in their lives by being a teacher and a mentor, the more popular your art can become. So many of our collectors who support those nearly half a million dollars in art sales from last year are trying to be some level of artist themselves; they’re trying to re-connect with a passion that maybe they had in college and let go. Being open to having amateurs paint alongside you can really bolster and build your career.

Rhoads: The people who are plein air painters are collectors, and vice versa. It’s one big community — the artist and the collector are one. Bond: That person who is just getting started in plein air is really looking to the competition artists, particularly those with established brands — rock star artists, we’ll call them — as their inspiration. Nobody wants to go out and not be in the same league as their peers, so mixing it up with some of the top people actually makes for better plein air painters across the board. Bellis: Being a collector of plein air paintings is an active, immersive experience. You want to be able to sit in your dining room and talk to the people you have over about the where, the when, the how, and the who of the art that is on your wall. It is an active collecting experience, not a passive one, where you might stumble into a gallery and feel moved by a particular artist or piece of work. I think a lot of people who collect plein air paintings are both connecting to the artists and the subjects themselves, and are often present at some point in the creation of the paintings. So, again, it’s about the active connection and the love of that immersive experience that have made plein air painting so exciting. In the end, we’re all in this together, and we’re in it because we love art and we love community, and we have built relationships with one another. I feel like it’s our responsibility to work together to create more opportunities to cultivate these relationships and grow the modern plein air movement. It’s how we’ll all continue to be sustainable and continue to enjoy the healthy community of artists that has been established.
