New Balance TCS New York City Marathon jacob k. javits center, manhattan, new york project executed with Sub Rosa event activated on november 3-5, 2017
2017
New Balance took over the sponsorship of the TCS NYC Marathon from Asics this past year, and we were in charge of creating a new, contextualized shopping experience for the weekend of the Marathon in November 2017. We carefully made design decisions that echoed the identity of New York City while maintaining the practical and efficient purpose that the spaces needed to serve. There were two separate entries created to serve the runners and the supporters. Lots of collaboration between our graphic designers, producers and strategists brought the project to a successful activation, selling over $4 million+ worth of New Balance gear to the 100,000+ visitors of the venue.

Ford City of Tomorrow festival pavilion, fort mason, san francisco, california project executed with Sub Rosa event activated on August 17, 2017
2017
Ford approached Sub Rosa with creating a lively space that kept the industrial and raw aesthetic of Festival Pavilion, an old military port primarily used during WW2. However, the challenge was to also create a gallery-like space that was used as workshops, cantina, art-gallery and a stage, where numerous speakers would give talks on the city of tomorrow. The design involved heavy iterations through plan as well as an extremely careful consideration of the single point perspective that was maintained throughout all iterations to keep the space feeling transparent. Furniture selections, material detail and circulation through space was extremely important in the design of the project that was activated in August 2017.
professional
The aim was to create a singular line of vision from the entrance to the stage, while creating spaces that peeled off into the sides for the various programs.

Outlast Uniform Rebrand & Digital Presence boston, massachusetts
2016
The client approached me with an idea of taking his booming business online, as they had been operating by strictly checks and cash since 1928 - an adopted family business. A suggestion was made to rebrand the entire identity prior to their move online, as it wasn’t so scaleable nor compatible with contemporary online formats and standards. Preliminary research was rigorously done to see all different types of rugged outerwear companies online, and then the branding was re-worked from the graphics side. After the new identity was agreed upon, the project moved forward to a full 18 hour photoshoot for lifestyle shots on the field, as well as a full product photoshoot for the new website. The new website was designed after all the photos were carefully selected.

The site, nested within Hotel Audessan in Montpellier, gave us very strict site limitations and parameters which we worked within. Using magnetic tape from old VCR tapes, a weaving panel was designed to hook the tape around our timber frame to create a saturated field of patterns. The tape created a mirror effect for those walking through, and the arches frame the existing arches on site, while the portals directed visitors through the pavilion. Over a four day construction period, the pavillion was built and then taken down at the end of the festival.

We tend to forget about the people that have to deal with additional disabilities and sicknesses, unless we know of one personally. As the advancement of technology continues to increase exponentially, and the pace of life accelerates, especially in dense metropolitan hubs, we continue to go through the motions of life each day, often in oblivion. By creating a monument for the living, the idea is to approach the design of monuments by detaching the word from historical or political agendas, and representing something banal, however relative to every single person. The project will manifest itself as a representation of our four basic senses, as an overload and deprivation, to allow one to experience life through a different lens, one that is altered from their own, to remind, and hopefully allow one to contemplate about their own life beyond the extents of the project.

The western railyard was chosen as the site, for its tabula rasa state which is quite rare in New York City. Due to the existing train system running, a platform is constructed through the use of caissons and beams over the active tracks.
2018
Following the organizational grid that was set up for the project, the major follies purposely break the grid with the cut of the site, while the overload and deprivation volumes on either side of the site, as well as the other objects placed on the site are tightly locked in.
The project exists as a symbiosis of the grid, field and objects. The field allows for flexibility and change with the passing of time, whereas the objects become permanent structures that offer the rigidity for the monuments.
academic
Each folly is created with approach, entry and sequence in mind. The various follies’ dimensions are derived from the grid, while the positioning is broken from the field. The idea was to create four, similar objects that were placed within the cut, with four different operations to depict the four different senses.

In the rapidly growing neighborhood of Shoreditch, the large tech corporations quickly making their move to “the Silicon Roundabout are pushing out the ones who originally (musicians and artists) made Shoreditch attractive to the world. Thorough research and understanding of (live + work + play) and the history of the context was required to develop the project into a response for another neighborhood at the brink of an identity wipe.

The idea lies between an attempt to create a symbiotic relationship between the widely varied tenants of the building.

The connection to the rest of the building was prioritized, as similar projects often create segregation, even when the intentions were clear. The sense of community was very important in the design process.

Rethinking Bird Library syracuse, new york in collaboration with Tolga Mizrakci
2017
A contemporary university library must embrace the quickly changing environment around us, especially in the field of education. Old technologies are quickly becoming obsolete, and new functions are quickly becoming a necessity in a university library. The current library at Syracuse University stands as a grave brutalist structure, unresponsive to directionality, context or circulation. To address the above issues, through the integrated design studio project, all aspects of the building design (structure, HVAC & program) were considered in the rethinking of what must be the crown jewel of a university campus.

Scarcity of Knowledge brooklyn, new york research in collaboration with James Gililand
2016
The issue of water scarcity gained global attention when scientists declared that the Syrian revolution could be connected to the fact that countries surrounding the Tigris and Euphrates are losing water faster than anywhere else on the planet. Nobody is talking about it unfortunately. Even with the received attention, it still lacks the amount of public knowledge and outreach to really impact any countries in need of help. Through educating the mass public on this issue, this project aims to create a center of education and innovation by partnering with institutions and companies that are actively engaging this very serious ecological issue.
academic
Researching the recent developments caused by the scarcity of water was very important to understand the broader scope of this global issue, before attempting to localize it into Brooklyn, New York.

Multifunctional Mediator roosevelt island, new york city
2015
New York City was devastated after the destruction by Hurricane Sandy in 2012. Tremendous effort was put forth to re-think the waterfront of Manhattan to avoid another natural disaster that could further damage the inner part of the city. Roosevelt Island is an interesting case, because it is not situated on either side of the East River, but rather in the middle of it, making it extremely vulnerable to another hurricane. Using the rubble from pre-existing buildings on site to build up a berm, the project uses a similar approach to the waterfront efforts, but with a means to unobstruct views and protect a historical building on site. The project will also serve as an extension of the existing park and Four Points Monument.
academic
The project was not designed to completely protect the site from a potential flood, but rather to provide platforms and shelter for refugees in the case of a disaster. Normal condition
Using the rubble from the same demolition site used to make the tiles, the berm will be created that houses the project underneath. The berm will perform multiple actions to prevent, and help the situation of another potential flood.

The tiling of the landscape was an attempt to dissolve any erosion that may happen in heavy torrential rain, or a flood. By using the rubble from the hospital being destroyed further north of the island, the tiles come from recycled concrete.
