Cop boards

My creative practice within the third year has been subsidized by a part time internship at Leeds based, digital agency Numiko. Pro-Rata contextualises the relationship between my own studio practice and my role as an intern. The publication reference both the work of other and articles to reflect how each have informed each other and how they’ve moulded me into the designer I am today.

The Design Context Publication is a publication that requires you to undertake a period of focused, in-depth and sustained research into an area of graphic design appropriate to your design strategy. You should apply a range of research methods in the investigation of issues, practices, practitioners and companies relating to your own particular area of study. This should culminate in the design and production of a Case Study in the form of a book (or print based delivery), interactive dvd or web site.

I had already predetermined that the format of the publciation to be presented as a magazine, I’ve chosen this format about upon on the content that will be held inside, as the publication will feature articles as well studios that i’ve explored I felt a magazine format would be most appropriate. For this reason I visually explored a range of printed publication that had similar to content of my cop publication.

User For people looking at the body of work I have produced within the third year, the design context publication will provide and background and underpinning as to the context in which all of the works whether it be the sector or format of work that has been produced.

Deliverables - On going documentation on Blog - A minimum of 5 submission boards - A minimum of 2 copies of publication to be printed or submitted in an appropriate format.

Development of Typographical Structure Before designing the publication in InDesign I trailed a range of typographical structures for the magaizne which used a standard set of formats that I will require for the publication such as styles for body copy, titles, quotes and caption. Using this basic structure I text a range of different typefaces styles mixing both sans-serif and serif together. As well looking at weight, a typographical ornamentation like bold and italicised text. The most productive styles that I had produced was the use of Serif font for headings and titling combined with a light weighted sans-serif font for the body copy, captioning and quoting.

Tote [Above] I wanted to make the publication more of a stand out piece of work by including the magazine within a similarly sized tote bag which advertises the name of the publication. The addition of this makes the magazine more a limited edition piece of printed emphemera, additonally as I’m having 10 copies printed I can distrubuted the remaining copies in this format.

Cover [Left] The concept for the publication, Pro Rata is about having two roles and two identities within the third year, this has been simply and boldly represented by the forward slash typographical element, to indicate how I have been half of one thing and half on another. This idea of halving has also been reflective through use of black on white design on the front mirrored on the back with a white on black design on the back.

Typography and Internal Layout Using the versatile typographical structure that I devided during the development stage allowed me to focus heavily on typography within the design and layout of pages and article within the publication. As much of the content was copy driven with little imagery this meant creative and engagement was created through unique and intresting compositions of text and text styles. Although there are clear typographical conventions and styles throughout the publication the use of colour layout made each article feel like it’s own but still part of a larger publciation.
