EDITOR'S NOTES Good afternoon and welcome to today's FA Vase game against Abingdon United. We face the second Abingdon side in as many rounds of the FA Vase, we welcome everyone visiting from Oxfordshire today. Last season we had a great debut FA Vase campaign getting through to the Second Round Proper. Everyone at the club would like to match that feat and maybe go further, but as with any cup, form goes out the window! Abingdon United have had a mixed start to the season, with 7 points from their first 6 games in Division One East of the Hellenic League.
Hopefully we can do the western half of the league proud today and progress to the next round! Please follow all the social distancing procedures in place. If we all want to carry on attending football it's important we do as much as we can. On a final note, there's one more day to donate to our crowdfunder campaign. There's more info on page 31 about some of the rewards still on offer. Tom Shorey Programme Editor

THORNBURY TOWN Club History It is understood that football has been played in Thornbury from around 1898 and formerly known as Thornbury Sports became Thornbury Town FC in the early 1970’s. Mundy Playing Fields has been the home of the club since the end of World War Two although changing facilities were sited in local places such as the Exchange Hotel, which is now The Knot of Rope. 1968-69 we became founder members of the Gloucestershire County League and spectator figures in excess of 500 were regularly recorded. In 1971 the club finished third in the Gloucestershire County League and was accepted into the Western League. However, due to difficulties in bringing the facilities up to the leagues required standards were unable to take the next step up. Relegation to the Bristol Premier Combination League unfortunately followed in 1976-77. The following 20+ years saw Thornbury Town strive to regain their former status, never really threatening to take the Premier Combination title. The only success during these lean years was reaching the final of the GFA Senior Amateur Cup in 1985-86 and 1989-90 unfortunately on both occasions loser’s medals were received. During the late 1990’s, the Club maintained its strong focus on developing local talent and this eventually bore fruit in 1999 when the final of the Stroud Charity Cup was reached, losing narrowly to Dursley Town. 2001-02 season
4
Thornbury Town v Abingdon United
saw the management team of Dave Wiffill and Steve Burbage take the reins, which brought instant success winning the Bristol Premier Combination title by 13 points and a return to the Gloucestershire County League. This followed a run of thirteen consecutive league wins a club record, which still stands to this day. The league and cup double eluded the club when they were defeated by Sea Mills in the League Cup Final. In preparation for the return to County League football the summer of 2002 saw a lot of hard work undertaken on the Mundy facilities with the building of dug-outs, improved drainage and revamping of the dressing rooms. All this work appeared to have been worth while with the club establishing itself back in the Gloucestershire County league with a creditable 7th league position for the next three seasons. Silverware did come our way in 2003-04 when we defeated Taverners on penalties, after a 2-2 draw, to lift the Stroud Charity Cup. The 2003-04 season, also saw the formation of an Under-18’s side under the management of Terry Payton in order to maintain Youth development within the club and they gained entry to the Gloucester County Youth League. Following a number of indifferent seasons when relegation back to the Bristol Premier Combination league was only just averted in 2006–07, a new management committee and first team management were appointed. Dave Lippiatt took over as first team manager, coming to the club from Sea Mills Park bringing with him Carl Derosa as his assistant. With an initial
three / four year strategy, which came to fruition during the 2009-10 season when after a steady first half to the season a tremendous winning run of ten league games saw the Surridge Gloucestershire County League title won for the first time in the clubs history. 2010 also saw the milestone achievement of the long awaited coming together of the two local football clubs “Thornbury Town FC” and “Thornbury Falcons FC” now under one club management umbrella of Thornbury Town FC without losing the heritage and identity of Thornbury Falcons. This will further enhance the long term development within the local community for junior, youth and senior football. In the 2010-11 season the final of the Les James Cup Final was reached, which resulted in a penalty shoot-out disappointment against Henbury Town. 2013-14 saw the U18’s in their highest league position in the Gloucestershire County Youth League finishing runners-up, which was a tremendous achievement for the team and managers Simon Pirie and Mark Franklin.
The 2014-15 season was a very successful season finishing 4th in the league and winning the Les James Cup for the first time in the Club’s history. Andy Davies continued to produce a team of quality which resulted in a third 4th-place in a row in Season 2016-17. 2017-18 saw the club finally succeed in their quest win the Gloucestershire County League. After a lot of work behind the scenes to gain planning permission for the required ground improvements, the club were accepted into the Hellenic League for the first time in our history. Our first season in the Hellenic League saw us finish a creditable 3rd in Div 1 West and win the Supplementary Cup. 2019-2020 season was ruled null and void due to the Coronavirus pandemic with the team poised to gain promotion. With a new management team of Jason Rees and Gary Kemp in place we look forward to the season ahead and wish all teams the best of luck in their endeavours.

ABINGDON UNITED Club History The club was formed in 1946 when a group of ex-service men decided that the town could support two football clubs. The first meeting to form the club was held in the local Anchor Public House on the bank of the River Thames, as there were no club facilities. They joined the North Berks League and within two seasons had won its Charity Shield. The following year 1953/54 they won the league and cup finalists. The club had its sights on higher things and five years later entered the Hellenic League. Since then it has remained in this league and during this time had success in the lower divisions. In 1965/66 they won the Division One Challenge Cup and the following season were the cup finalists. No further honours came the club’s way until winning promotion in 1976/77 to the Premier Division. After a struggle at this level, relegation back to Division One came after four seasons. With a more ambitious approach, the club bounced back into the Premier League where it has remained ever since. It also won the Division One Cup in the same promotion year. Senior status was achieved in 1985 allowing it to be eligible for the F.A. Vase, County Senior Cup and in 1989 entered the F.A. Cup for the first time. A Members Room, Function Room, Covered Stand and Floodlighting have been completed in recent years to improve the off pitch facilities. 1996/97 has seen the club complete its 50th season and it’s most successful. United won the final of the Berks and Bucks Senior Trophy and also winning the League’s Floodlit Cup. The
10
Thornbury Town v Abingdon United
highest ever league position was attained when finishing as Runners Up in the Hellenic Premier Division. The following season again saw success come to Northcourt Road with retaining the County Senior Trophy, Hellenic League Reserve Championship and Allied Counties Youth League winners. 2001 saw the construction of new changing rooms, together with turnstiles, to the Northcourt Road Ground and 2005 saw the construction of a new 150-seater stand and a covered stand. The club clinched promotion to the Southern League in season 2005/06. The club returned to the uhlsport Hellenic League in 2013/14. United gained runners-up in Division 1 in season 2016/17 to clinch promotion back to the Hellenic Premier League. The 2017/18 saw the young Development team clinch runners up in the Hellenic Div 2 and also winning the League Challenge cup. The 2017/18 season also saw the introduction of United’s first women’s team who obtained League promotion in its first season together with the County Cup and League Cup. Season 2018/19 saw the women team progress into the Southern Region League, while the First Team were dropped down to the Hellenic Division 1.

THORNBURY TOWN 2 GARDNER, WORMWELL
MALVERN TOWN 0 MATCH SPONSORED BY GLOBAL CYCLING NETWORK Another large and socially distanced crowd witnessed one of the best nights under lights at the Mundy’s as Thornbury beat title favourites Malvern. Once again injuries forced changes and names usually first on the team sheet, Craig Lancastle, Nathan Sage and Mark Viner, sat out. Malvern can think themselves lucky as early as the first minute when Luke Franklin released Harry Brock who was brought down in the area by the last defender. The referee, who was apparently unsighted, waved play on and the visitors were neither a goal or a man down. Malvern just edged the possession as their wing backs got forward more than the hosts’ but the corners produced were either well claimed by Parkin or defended well at the near post. The last few minutes of the half saw some of the better action as firstly a Malvern free-kick hit the crossbar with the resulting follow up finish being ruled out for offside by an early flag from the assistant. Franklin was brought
down on the edge in time added on and the resulting kick going just over. Nil-nil at the break. A couple of minutes in Malvern hit the woodwork again, this time the inside of the post. The 50th minute saw the injured Brock replaced by Elliot Gardner and barely five minutes later he scored with his first touch of the game! - a cross from Wormwell headed in at the near post. The middle of the half saw the combative Brandon Benjamin sin-binned for ten minutes but the ten men soaked up the pressure, put their bodies on the line and kept the sheet clean. Harry Walton replaced James DeRosa with ten left and some neat passing and possession saw Thornbury get closer to the line. In time added on a strong run by Gardner saw his shot saved by the ‘keeper and the ball run free for Wormwell to stroke the ball home to the loudest cheer of the night. Early days but Thornbury sit unbeaten in fourth place in the table having played four of the top six teams. Man of the Match = Luke Franklin

Tuesday 6th October - Hellenic League Division 1
THORNBURY TOWN 3 BENJAMIN (2), GARDNER
NEWENT TOWN 3 SPONSORED BY THE BLACK HORSE INN Harry Brock joined the growing list of players out injured last week and Mackenzie Welsh was a late replacement for Kurtis Parkin in goal. The first quarter was fairly quiet but it was clear Newent are a much improved team from last season and after Welsh had dealt with a chance well minutes earlier, on 20 minutes Newent opened the scoring with a well finished goal after a couple of good passes.
The game started to get a little ill tempered with two Newent players going in the referee’s book along with Jacob Farthing. With fifteen left a Newent corner was floated into the box and the next thing heard was the referee’s whistle – no appeals from either side – and he pointed to the penalty spot to the surprise of everyone in the ground. The penalty was well taken and the scores were level again.
Franklin went off injured on 22 minutes to be replaced by Harry Walton with no change to the 3-5-2 formation.
In time added on for stoppages a Wormwell short throw saw the ball delivered into the area where a brave challenge from Derosa was saved and broke to Benjamin who finished with a diving header.
A string of corners finally resulted in the equaliser when a short corner eventually found Elliot Gardner who found the net in the last minute of the half.
Thornbury should have perhaps managed the remainder of the game better but with the last kick of the game Newent equalised from a well struck direct free-kick.
One-one at the break.
Thornbury remain unbeaten this season but will rue more dropped points at home in the league.
On the hour mark an excellent James Derosa run down the right saw his pull back dummied by Tom Webb and Brandon Benjamin fired home for the lead.
