EDITOR'S NOTES Good evening and welcome to today's Hellenic League game against Newent Town. A great well-fought victory last week against Malvern Town stopped their 100% record and was a big statement that we can be regarded as promotion contenders alongside them. Today we face Newent Town, who have also had a fairly good start to the season and will be looking to carry on their form after a comprehesive 4-0 win against Stonehouse on Saturday.

For the past couple of months we've been asking for your support via our crowdfunder. Everyone at the club has been blown away by the genorousity of everyone who has donated. We've managed to hit our target required to enable Sport England to matchfund it, so we are now over ÂŁ10,000. There is still time to donate with some cool rewards still on offer, we have a stretch target that will allow us to move ahead with some upgrades to the Mundys. Tom Shorey Programme Editor

THORNBURY TOWN Club History It is understood that football has been played in Thornbury from around 1898 and formerly known as Thornbury Sports became Thornbury Town FC in the early 1970’s. Mundy Playing Fields has been the home of the club since the end of World War Two although changing facilities were sited in local places such as the Exchange Hotel, which is now The Knot of Rope. 1968-69 we became founder members of the Gloucestershire County League and spectator figures in excess of 500 were regularly recorded. In 1971 the club finished third in the Gloucestershire County League and was accepted into the Western League. However, due to difficulties in bringing the facilities up to the leagues required standards were unable to take the next step up. Relegation to the Bristol Premier Combination League unfortunately followed in 1976-77. The following 20+ years saw Thornbury Town strive to regain their former status, never really threatening to take the Premier Combination title. The only success during these lean years was reaching the final of the GFA Senior Amateur Cup in 1985-86 and 1989-90 unfortunately on both occasions loser’s medals were received. During the late 1990’s, the Club maintained its strong focus on developing local talent and this eventually bore fruit in 1999 when the final of the Stroud Charity Cup was reached, losing narrowly to Dursley Town. 2001-02 season

4

Thornbury Town v Newent Town

saw the management team of Dave Wiffill and Steve Burbage take the reins, which brought instant success winning the Bristol Premier Combination title by 13 points and a return to the Gloucestershire County League. This followed a run of thirteen consecutive league wins a club record, which still stands to this day. The league and cup double eluded the club when they were defeated by Sea Mills in the League Cup Final. In preparation for the return to County League football the summer of 2002 saw a lot of hard work undertaken on the Mundy facilities with the building of dug-outs, improved drainage and revamping of the dressing rooms. All this work appeared to have been worth while with the club establishing itself back in the Gloucestershire County league with a creditable 7th league position for the next three seasons. Silverware did come our way in 2003-04 when we defeated Taverners on penalties, after a 2-2 draw, to lift the Stroud Charity Cup. The 2003-04 season, also saw the formation of an Under-18’s side under the management of Terry Payton in order to maintain Youth development within the club and they gained entry to the Gloucester County Youth League. Following a number of indifferent seasons when relegation back to the Bristol Premier Combination league was only just averted in 2006–07, a new management committee and first team management were appointed. Dave Lippiatt took over as first team manager, coming to the club from Sea Mills Park bringing with him Carl Derosa as his assistant. With an initial

three / four year strategy, which came to fruition during the 2009-10 season when after a steady first half to the season a tremendous winning run of ten league games saw the Surridge Gloucestershire County League title won for the first time in the clubs history. 2010 also saw the milestone achievement of the long awaited coming together of the two local football clubs “Thornbury Town FC” and “Thornbury Falcons FC” now under one club management umbrella of Thornbury Town FC without losing the heritage and identity of Thornbury Falcons. This will further enhance the long term development within the local community for junior, youth and senior football. In the 2010-11 season the final of the Les James Cup Final was reached, which resulted in a penalty shoot-out disappointment against Henbury Town. 2013-14 saw the U18’s in their highest league position in the Gloucestershire County Youth League finishing runners-up, which was a tremendous achievement for the team and managers Simon Pirie and Mark Franklin.

The 2014-15 season was a very successful season finishing 4th in the league and winning the Les James Cup for the first time in the Club’s history. Andy Davies continued to produce a team of quality which resulted in a third 4th-place in a row in Season 2016-17. 2017-18 saw the club finally succeed in their quest win the Gloucestershire County League. After a lot of work behind the scenes to gain planning permission for the required ground improvements, the club were accepted into the Hellenic League for the first time in our history. Our first season in the Hellenic League saw us finish a creditable 3rd in Div 1 West and win the Supplementary Cup. 2019-2020 season was ruled null and void due to the Coronavirus pandemic with the team poised to gain promotion. With a new management team of Jason Rees and Gary Kemp in place we look forward to the season ahead and wish all teams the best of luck in their endeavours.

NEWENT TOWN Club History Newent Town AFC was established in 1920. So we’ve just had our Centenary year !! Through history Newent have played in the North Gloucester League and were promoted to the Gloucestershire Northern Senior League in the 1970’s. Then spend a while bouncing down and back up again, before finally reaching the Gloucester County League, staying there for six years. After a tumble, the big push started in 2012 when Newent won the North Gloucestershire Premier Title on the last game of the season. Then completing a back-to-back promotion from Gloucestershire Northern Senior 2 the very next season. They spend three years in Gloucestershire Northern Senior 1, with a best place finish of 3rd, picking up the League Cup twice in a row.

10

Thornbury Town v Newent Town

Having spent considerable money and work on the facilities, Newent were invited into the uhlsport Hellenic League system in division Two West. Under the new Management of Ben Stringer and Martin Elton (former Newent players), they finished as Division Two West Champions at the first attempt. They joined Hellenic 1 West in 2018/19 (the highest level in their history), and have adapted pretty well to the National League step 6 standard. With Floodlights and a ground grading ‘G’, they entered the FA Vase last season, winning their first round game and then getting edged out 2-1 at Longlevens. This season we made our debut in the FA Cup, which was another proud moment for the club, the town, Committee, Management and players.

Newent Town AFC Alex Goode

Goal Keeper

Captain - One of the Forest of Dean finest goal keepers, well known in these parts. One of the first players signed when the manager first took over, Alex has been tremendous ever since. He is a great character and an even better stopper

Ryan Barry

Defence

Alexander Allard

Defence

Finleigh Brown

Defence

Former Captain of Old Richians, Ryan joined us pre season and showed good strength and composure. Good on the ball, but also does the basic defending duties very well.

Former Gloucester City, Shortwood United and Cirencester Town player. Happy to play local now. He can play across the back line, or in midfield. A logical thinker and a voice in the dressing room

Centre Back/Holding Midfield. One of three lads in the squad who came through Newent Under-15s/16s. Still only 18, but has a bright future with us. Strong and calm in possession, this teenager will still improve

Jacob Nutting

Midfield

Brother to Alex, fireman Ross has been here just as long if not longer, plying his trade between the sticks, has also been known to venture into the back line. Can also do a turn as club physio and also runs the clubs books

Left Back. Another youth product who is 18, but entering his third full season with us. Luke is a little terrier with a big heart and he never gives up.

Graduated from our reserves a couple of seasons ago and hasn’t looked back since. Also cooked a mean curry last season for the after match hospitality - would definitely recommend.

Can play centre midfield or anywhere across the back. Only 18, but shows maturity ahead of his years. Also, a great character to have around the dressing rooms.

Morgan Davies

Midfield

From Romania, has now lived in Newent for 4 years. Good utility player that can slot in anywhere across midfield and even up front.

Another of our Under-16 success stories. At 18 he’s already a big part of this team. He seldom misses a training session or a team night out and the future looks bright for him.

Midfield

Our ball playing centre midfielder who played a big part in our Hellenic Two winning campaign. He now struggles to get his head around the music the younger generation put on the speaker before a game! Strong powerful, left footed winger with an eye for goal. Has been part of various promotions and cups wins, left wing back with an eye for a goal

Right Midfield. Can also play in the middle and often drifts in there to pick up the ball. Fittest man in the club, leaving everyone standing on the Bleep Test. Funny guy to have around the club.

In his third spell with his and in his first spell he was a striker, then abracadabra we turned him into a centre-back! He is very quick, can head a ball and was a big part of the team when we won Hellenic Two West.

Jack Jeremiah

Midfield

Jordan Cooper

Forward

Jack is entering his first season at the club and he’s been a breath of fresh air during pre-season. Fit as a fiddle, works hard for his team and a big threat when joining attacks.

Fast feet, good control and a powerful shot that serves him well. Coops ended the last campaign on 20 goals so he’ll be looking to better that this year. Cool, calm and collected in front of goal a big season awaits.

Sanchez Grange

Forward

Patrick Gibbs

Forward

Tyler Wier

Forward

Stepped up from our reserves and never looked back. Top scorer last season. Has blistering pace, good strength and a fantastic attitude to training.

Dorian Colling

Forward

Dor has had more clubs than Tiger Woods, but always gravitate’s back towards his home at Newent. This year he looks fitter than ever and still retains that old pace of his, just the recovery time takes a little longer now.

12

Ross Allard

Thornbury Town v Newent Town

Been with us since the North Glos days and has been a huge part of Newent’s recent success story, scoring over 100 goals and even chipping in with some sparky work around the club. The ultimate club man.

Former Hereford United professional and a player at Worcester City, Evesham United. Has played in the football League. Scored two penalties for Worcester in the FA Cup's longest ever shoot-out to knock out Coventy City 14-13 (in 2014).

Tuesday 29th September - Hellenic League Division One West

THORNBURY TOWN 2 GARDNER, WORMWELL

MALVERN TOWN 0 MATCH SPONSORED BY GLOBAL CYCLING NETWORK Another large and socially distanced crowd witnessed one of the best nights under lights at the Mundy’s as Thornbury beat title favourites Malvern. Once again injuries forced changes and names usually first on the team sheet, Craig Lancastle, Nathan Sage and Mark Viner, sat out. Malvern can think themselves lucky as early as the first minute when Luke Franklin released Harry Brock who was brought down in the area by the last defender. The referee, who was apparently unsighted, waved play on and the visitors were neither a goal or a man down. Malvern just edged the possession as their wing backs got forward more than the hosts’ but the corners produced were either well claimed by Parkin or defended well at the near post. The last few minutes of the half saw some of the better action as firstly a Malvern free-kick hit the crossbar with the resulting follow up finish being ruled out for offside by an early flag from the assistant. Franklin was brought

down on the edge in time added on and the resulting kick going just over. Nil-nil at the break. A couple of minutes in Malvern hit the woodwork again, this time the inside of the post. The 50th minute saw the injured Brock replaced by Elliot Gardner and barely five minutes later he scored with his first touch of the game! - a cross from Wormwell headed in at the near post. The middle of the half saw the combative Brandon Benjamin sin-binned for ten minutes but the ten men soaked up the pressure, put their bodies on the line and kept the sheet clean. Harry Walton replaced James DeRosa with ten left and some neat passing and possession saw Thornbury get closer to the line. In time added on a strong run by Gardner saw his shot saved by the ‘keeper and the ball run free for Wormwell to stroke the ball home to the loudest cheer of the night. Early days but Thornbury sit unbeaten in fourth place in the table having played four of the top six teams. Man of the Match = Luke Franklin

Saturday 26th September - Hellenic League Challenge Cup

THORNBURY TOWN 2 WORMWELL (2)

SHORTWOOD UNITED 2 HARPER, TRYNER THORNBURY TOWN WIN 5-4 ON PENS MATCH SPONSORED BY W2 EVENTS A break from league action with the first round of the League Cup. Changes again for the home side due to injuries but it gave reserve players George Huke his first start in the first team and Tom Clare some game time. Early pressure saw Huke & Benjamin come close with headers but it was Shortwood who took the lead in the 12th minute when an under-hit back pass saw ‘keeper Kurtis Parkin’s block spin to forward Ellis Harper who rolled the ball into an empty net. More pressure saw a string of Thornbury corners and chances and the equaliser finally came in the 35th minute when Marcus Wormwell fired home after a good pull back from Lancastle. A strong run from captain Joe Guest resulted in a Shortwood yellow card and free-kick on the edge of the box but when the ball broke to Dan Parry he could only fire over. One-one at the break

Thornbury Town v Newent Town

The first half of the second half saw Shortwood have more chances, albeit mostly off target, but Parkin was forced to save well with his feet. Jacob Farthing was on for Parry and James DeRosa, who had replaced an injured Nathan Sage, found Wormwell with a well weighted through-ball with ten minutes left on the clock and he curled the ball inside the far post to take the lead. Just when it looked like Thornbury were in the hat for the next round a deep free kick in the final minute found Tryner unmarked at the far post and it was 2-2 There was still time for Wormwell to miss his easiest chance of the match in added time and the game went straight to penalties. Lancastle, Benjamin, Webb and Wormwell scored theirs to make it 4-4 in the shootout before Parkin saved Shortwood’s fifth and Farthing stepped up to calmly tuck away the winner. Man of the Match = Marcus Wormwell
