WELCOME BACK

to the Mundy Playing Fields, Home of Thornbury Town FC Dear Supporters, Players and Members, As you may already be aware, our Club is being financially hit hard by the effects of the Covid-19 virus. The early finish to the season meant our lucrative 6-a-side tournament was cancelled, our senior race night was cancelled and revenue for seven first team matches was lost. Going forward junior membership subscriptions have been reduced to compensate for last season's abrupt finish but inevitably sponsorship money for kit and boards will be decimated. It is anticipated this will cost the club in the region of ÂŁ10,000. In addition to this, with the season starting in September, social distancing will mean less spectators and diminished bar takings at first team games.

We are intending to add a new stand and reposition the existing one to significantly improve the matchday experience for all of our supporters. This will also clear the way for our Club to attain a higher level if we were to finish in a promotion position. We would like to think we are a club the town is proud of and we are always striving to improve our standing within the community. With all this in mind, the Club has set up a Crowdfunding site to recover the shortfall. Any amount raised will be matched by Sport England up to the value of the first ÂŁ5,000 raised. Other clubs in the area have taken advantage of this offer. You can donate via the link on our new look website, thornburytown.co.uk. Many thanks, Pete Webber Chairman

EDITOR'S NOTES Good afternoon and welcome to today's Hellenic League Challenge Cup game against Shortwood United. It was great to see so many people at the Mundy's for the game against Hereford Lads Club. Thank you to all of those attending for keeping to social distancing and making the Mundys as safe as possible. We're constantly reviewing our procedures so make sure to stay aware of signage and any other things put in place to keep us all safe.

Thank you also to everyone who made the trip to Malmesbury. They were treated to an early goal of the season contender from Marcus Wormwell. The video is on our facebook and twitter pages if you want to have a look for yourselves. Enjoy the game! Tom Shorey Programme Editor

THORNBURY TOWN Club History It is understood that football has been played in Thornbury from around 1898 and formerly known as Thornbury Sports became Thornbury Town FC in the early 1970’s. Mundy Playing Fields has been the home of the club since the end of World War Two although changing facilities were sited in local places such as the Exchange Hotel, which is now The Knot of Rope. 1968-69 we became founder members of the Gloucestershire County League and spectator figures in excess of 500 were regularly recorded. In 1971 the club finished third in the Gloucestershire County League and was accepted into the Western League. However, due to difficulties in bringing the facilities up to the leagues required standards were unable to take the next step up. Relegation to the Bristol Premier Combination League unfortunately followed in 1976-77. The following 20+ years saw Thornbury Town strive to regain their former status, never really threatening to take the Premier Combination title. The only success during these lean years was reaching the final of the GFA Senior Amateur Cup in 1985-86 and 1989-90 unfortunately on both occasions loser’s medals were received. During the late 1990’s, the Club maintained its strong focus on developing local talent and this eventually bore fruit in 1999 when the final of the Stroud Charity Cup was reached, losing narrowly to Dursley Town. 2001-02 season

4

Thornbury Town v Shortwood United

saw the management team of Dave Wiffill and Steve Burbage take the reins, which brought instant success winning the Bristol Premier Combination title by 13 points and a return to the Gloucestershire County League. This followed a run of thirteen consecutive league wins a club record, which still stands to this day. The league and cup double eluded the club when they were defeated by Sea Mills in the League Cup Final. In preparation for the return to County League football the summer of 2002 saw a lot of hard work undertaken on the Mundy facilities with the building of dug-outs, improved drainage and revamping of the dressing rooms. All this work appeared to have been worth while with the club establishing itself back in the Gloucestershire County league with a creditable 7th league position for the next three seasons. Silverware did come our way in 2003-04 when we defeated Taverners on penalties, after a 2-2 draw, to lift the Stroud Charity Cup. The 2003-04 season, also saw the formation of an Under-18’s side under the management of Terry Payton in order to maintain Youth development within the club and they gained entry to the Gloucester County Youth League. Following a number of indifferent seasons when relegation back to the Bristol Premier Combination league was only just averted in 2006–07, a new management committee and first team management were appointed. Dave Lippiatt took over as first team manager, coming to the club from Sea Mills Park bringing with him Carl Derosa as his assistant. With an initial

three / four year strategy, which came to fruition during the 2009-10 season when after a steady first half to the season a tremendous winning run of ten league games saw the Surridge Gloucestershire County League title won for the first time in the clubs history. 2010 also saw the milestone achievement of the long awaited coming together of the two local football clubs “Thornbury Town FC” and “Thornbury Falcons FC” now under one club management umbrella of Thornbury Town FC without losing the heritage and identity of Thornbury Falcons. This will further enhance the long term development within the local community for junior, youth and senior football. In the 2010-11 season the final of the Les James Cup Final was reached, which resulted in a penalty shoot-out disappointment against Henbury Town. 2013-14 saw the U18’s in their highest league position in the Gloucestershire County Youth League finishing runners-up, which was a tremendous achievement for the team and managers Simon Pirie and Mark Franklin.

The 2014-15 season was a very successful season finishing 4th in the league and winning the Les James Cup for the first time in the Club’s history. Andy Davies continued to produce a team of quality which resulted in a third 4th-place in a row in Season 2016-17. 2017-18 saw the club finally succeed in their quest win the Gloucestershire County League. After a lot of work behind the scenes to gain planning permission for the required ground improvements, the club were accepted into the Hellenic League for the first time in our history. Our first season in the Hellenic League saw us finish a creditable 3rd in Div 1 West and win the Supplementary Cup. 2019-2020 season was ruled null and void due to the Coronavirus pandemic with the team poised to gain promotion. With a new management team of Jason Rees and Gary Kemp in place we look forward to the season ahead and wish all teams the best of luck in their endeavours.

SHORTWOOD UNITED Club History Shortwood United Football Club was formed in 1900 and since then have played at four different grounds, Nailsworth Playing Field, Table Land, Wallow Green and finally at our current ground, Meadowbank. The club has been at Meadowbank since 1972, and includes an all weather training area opened by the late Ted Croker. Gradual improvements over the years culminated in a major enhancement in 2009 to meet ground grading criteria for any future promotions. League football was commenced in the Stroud League where following continued success during the 1970s promotion was gained to the Northern Senior and then the Gloucestershire County League. Promotion to the Hellenic league was achieved in 1981 only to be relegated in our first season but finishing runners up the following year ensured promotion straight back. In 1983 we won the Hellenic Division One Cup and GFA Trophy and in the following year won the Hellenic League. It was a further six years until success was realised again when the treble of League winners, GFA Trophy and Stroud Charity Cup was completed. The 2007/08 season started a resurgence in Shortwood’s fortunes in finishing 5th in the league and winning the supplementary cup, defeating Ardley 4-2 in the final. The subsequent season pushed our success even further when following a good run in the FA Cup and semi finalists in the League Cup. 2011-12 season, however, was pivotal in the Club’s history! Not only did they reach the quarter final of the FA Vase, they also reached the final of the Hellenic League Floodlit Cup and the GFA Trophy Final. Most important was

8

Thornbury Town v Shortwood United

their league position where they finished 2nd by 1 point behind Oxford City Nomads. With Nomad’s not applying for promotion, and with Shortwood filling all the relevant criteria, they were promoted to the Southern League for the first time in their history! The 2012-13 season was again a successful one. Following a disappointing early exit from the FA cup the club had a good run in the FA Trophy including a magnificent away victory at premier league side Weymouth on the way. In their first season in the Southern League they finished a creditable eighth position. The 2013-14 season saw Shortwood progress further in the FA Cup than ever before! Early wins over Egham and Aylesbury put them up against Conference South outfit Dorchester and a 1-0 away win, and a further 1-0 win at Didcot put them into uncharted waters of the fourth qualifying round where they drew Conference side Aldershot at Meadowbank. A late, but deserved, equaliser gave them a replay and a heroic 2-1 win sparked wild celebrations. A home draw pitted Shortwood against League 1 side Port Vale in front of a record crowd of 1,247 plus a live television audience courtesy of BT Sport. Shortwood bowed out – but with the plaudits their cup run earned ringing in their ears. The league season was also highly successful with a sixth placed finish, one point outside the play-off positions. 2014-15 failed to reach the heights of the previous season with many players moving on to higher things but for most of the season a play-off place looked possible until a decline in form towards the end of the season resulted

in an 11th place finish. 2015 -16 continued Shortwood’s continued stability in the Southern League as they finished the season 7th in the table with 78 points and the end of the season saw the end of an era as joint Manager John Evans retired after 20 seasons involvement with Shortwood – and the club moved forward with Alex Sykes now in sole charge. 2016-17 Was a strange season with the Wood exiting the FA Cup and the FA Trophy at the first hurdle and showing inconsistent league form but despite that they managed to finish a more than respectable 9th. In 2017 -18 The club had an excellent run in the FA Trophy and produced some excellent results in the league interspersed with some heavy defeats but this was only to be expected with a very young side – but throughout the year they strived to play football the Shortwood way. After Christmas Shortwood faced a difficult dilemma. The ever increasing demands of the FA around ground gradings and the loss of their

major sponsor left the club with no choice but to resign from the Southern League and they applied to the FA to be placed in the Toolstation Western League and they were successful in that application. Des Meredith did not feel that he could carry on with a complete rebuild of the side and departed and the club moved on with Jason Scrivens and Joey Tustain taking the helm. They did a tremendous job getting a squad together in next to no time in almost impossiblecircumstances. Shortwood finished bottom of the Toolstation Premier in 2018-19 and we were relegated and moved to the Hellenic Div 1 West, but the future is more optimistic than for a very long time. The COVID pandemic saw the cancellation of the season 2019-20 in March 2020 with the first team lying in a healthy 4th place in the league and the development team beginning to show some late form. During the enforced break Mat Blythe became sole first team manager appointing Ian Soule as his number two.

Saturday 19th September - FA Vase 1st Qualifying Round

ABINGDON TOWN 0 THORNBURY TOWN 3 BROCK (2), BENJAMIN Thornbury began this season's Road to Wembley at Abingdon Town who were playing in the Isthmian League as recently as the late 90’s but now play at an equivalent level to the visitors. If they don’t make it to the final at least the travelling support will have sat on Wembley seats – the main stand having those from the old stadium. A couple returning from injury saw Kurtis Parkin back between the sticks and Nathan Sage replace Pete Fowler in the middle of the back three. After a slow, cagey start the game came to life in the sixth minute when a deep cross from Dan Parry eventually found Harry Brock who slotted home with the home side looking for a linesman's flag. Although Abingdon did have a few long range efforts comfortably dealt with by Parkin it was the visitors who were causing problems with some neat attacking football and after a Brock effort was pushed out for a corner the resulting kick saw Franklin cross for Brandon Benjamin to double the lead on the half hour

mark. Another in-swinging corner five minutes later saw Franklin find Brock this time and at threenil at the break it was going to be a long way back for Abingdon. James DeRosa replaced Mark Viner at the break and understandably, with the heat and scoreline, Thornbury could afford to slow the game down. Abingdon had more possession in the second half and showed they could play a bit but the damage had been done in the first half. Rhys Hodgson replaced Tom Webb and was taken out in WWF fashion on the edge of the D only for Lancastle to hit the wall. Wormwell was unlucky soon after when his effort was deflected onto the post but Thornbury were in the hat for the next round. With the draw always throwing up coincidences, the next round sees Abingdon United visit the Mundy’s.

Tuesday 22nd September - Hellenic League Division One West

MALMESBURY VICTORIA 1 ROPER

THORNBURY TOWN 1 WORMWELL A couple of changes due to holiday but it gave a few a chance to gain some much needed minutes. Thornbury started strongly and five minutes in James DeRosa shot over and although Malmesbury had a couple of long range efforts dealt with easily by Parkin it was Ant Brown in the home goal who had to pull off the save of the night when a Lancastle freekick looked destined for the top corner. Webb also had a good effort before, on 25 minutes, Wormwell scored a curling, dipping screamer from 25 yards to put Thornbury ahead. He nearly doubled the lead shortly after from a quickly taken kick by Viner. One-nil to the visitors at the break and well worth their lead Due to injury Farthing was replaced at halftime by Nathan Sage with a slight shuffle of personnel with Wormwell now one of the front two

28

Malmesbury were the better side in the second half though, both in possession & territorially, which resulted in a number of shots and corners. Their pressure finally paid off in the 63rd minute when Mani Roper was deemed not to have fouled DeRosa when winning the ball back and his shot from just outside the box matched Wormwell’s earlier effort. Lancastle had a half chance with a couple of minutes left but Thornbury didn’t really deserve a goal based on their second half display. Once again, Thornbury had defended well dealing with both some excellent diagonal long balls, numerous corners and the strength & pace of Malmesbury’s front runners. A classic game of two halves. The Flying Monk ground will not be an easy place to go this season and it may be a point gained on the road rather than two dropped.
